NATHALIE’S POV
-
When I got my passbook from the bank teller, I checked its contents. A bitter smile touched my lips after seeing only eigthy dollars left on my bank account.
After all the important thing I have paid off the debt and I no longer owe monthly payments.
After leaving the bank and since I was already at the mall, I bought a chocolate cake.
“Ma’am, what should I put on the dedication cake?” The person who assisted me at this cake shop asked.
“Happy fourth wedding anniversary,” I answered the woman with a smile.
“Wow! Congratulations, Ma’am.”
“Thank you.”
After buying the cake, I also bought a platter of spaghetti. Joshua, my husband, told me he would be busy and would work overtime, so I wanted to surprise him.
He worked for a multi-billionaire jewelry company, therefore he was often busy and almost slept there.
We need to get better at work to pay off all our debts. I often help him with his works and other work for the company.
My surprises are sure to bring a huge smile to his face. Aside from paid our debt, I can get a promotion tomorrow if my presentation is successful.
I can’t wait to tell all the good news to my husband and this time we can start a family.
Upon arriving at the company, I signed first for the visitor’s lounge.
“Thank you,” I said, thanking the staff for giving me my visitor ID.
I headed straight for the elevator and, with office hours having concluded almost two hours prior, I saw no employees and reached the level where my husband was.
I surveyed surroundings and noticed an absence of people.
I proceeded to Joshua’s table and placed the food. The bag he always brought was still there, so that meant he hadn’t left yet.
“Ooh! Ahh!”
I looked where a woman’s moan came from.
“A-Ahh, baby!”
I walked slowly and tried not to make any noise.
Afraid to even hear my breathing, I hold my breath.
“A-Ahhh!!”
Arriving outside the office where the voice came from, the door opened slightly, allowing a glimpse of the occupant. My husband was visible on the sofa, between my best friend’s legs, both naked and both ejaculating, kissing each other as if they were so hungry for each other.
I couldn’t bear to look at them. They disgusted me.
I’m not certain how I walked with the tenderness I felt. I left that floor and went straight out of this company.
I took the first taxi I had encountered. When I got in, I told the driver my exact address.
How were two important people in my life able to do this to me? My husband is the only man who loved me and Hazel, the only best-friend since we were in middle school.
————
As I entered the house, I cried unceasingly. I filled every corner of the house with my cries.
Never in my dreams would I have thought they would do this to me.
I didn’t realize how many hours I cried and I just noticed my unfaithful husband’s arrival.
I stood up to talk to him thoroughly.
I am uncertain how to address him regarding what I witnessed, how to commence. I don’t want us to end up arguing.
I opened my mouth, but before I could speak, he spoke first, which I stopped.
“Our marriage is no longer valid.”
He took a folder from his bag and placed it on the table.
“Aren’t you going to explain why you cheated on me—”
“I don’t love you.” He sounded sure of every word he uttered.
My jaw was hanging in the air. My brain couldn’t process what he said.
He didn’t love me, he didn’t love me anymore. Those two are different.
He let out a sigh. “I saw what you left on my table, I presume you saw me and—”
My palm flew to his cheek. This was the first time my palm had touched his cheek like this.
“You don’t even intend to explain?” I asked in disbelief while holding back tears.
“I don’t love you. What don’t you understand about that?” He asks irritably.
“You don’t love me? We’ve been married for four years. Why did you do this to me now? Of all people, why my best-friend?”
“Your friend can help me get promoted to general manager of the company. Have you got know on the position’s level and the salary it offers? If her mother resigns, they will help be the next general manager of multi-billionaire company.”
Before we got married, we separated for three years—after we graduated from college. He subsequently returned to me and, following our intimidate wedding, he joined the company where Hazel is working with Hazel’s assistance and her mother.
Ever since he started working, I’ve been doing almost all of his reports, so it’s like I have two jobs, but all of my salary goes to paying bills and paying off his debt and his parents debt–which we owe because we got married.
“I don’t need your help anymore to do my job,” he said with a smile. “Hazel will help me get a higher position in that company.”
He stayed at his job for a long time because of me, because of my making his works. All this time, he just used me it to last at work.
“I should have given you this last month and told you,” he said without hesitation.
Last month, I stayed up several nights to do his fault reports. After revising several times, it was approved.
I didn’t even receive a thank you from him, thinking he was so busy why he forgot to say at least thank you.
Joshua removed the documents from the folder and handed them to me. “We’ve been divorced for over a month.”
NATHALIE’S POV-“What are you saying?” My eyebrows furrowed as I ask. “I signed nothing like this.”“Are you sure? Examine the divorce papers. They bear your signature.”I scan at each paper with my signature attached one by one. My whole body froze upon observing my signatures on them. No matter what I look back in the past, I have no recollection of signing such a documents. Or maybe there’s something I just didn’t notice in the amount of work I’ve been doing in recent months. There are things he makes me sign that sometimes I can’t afford to read because of the amount of work I do.“Pack your things and leave my house. I don’t want to see your face again.”“You can’t do this.”“I can and I will. Our marriage is no longer valid, so you have no right to my house,” he heartlessly said.“I have nowhere to go—”“And I don’t care.” He cut me off as if he hadn’t even listened to my plea.I recently sold the house and land my late father had given to me. I used the money I sold to pay o
NATHALIE’S POV-SHE threw my clothes in my face. “I’m your only friend, so you can’t approach anyone else right now,” she shook her head while laughing. “Just tell me where you’re going to bury your mother–oops. My mistake, you’re without the means to bury your mother.”Her disrespect caused a tightness in my chest. How could she devise and utter such a statement? When my parents and her parents had a dispute and my parents kept me away from her before, my parents still treated Hazel like a daughter. Often her mother was away for work, we gave her food because her mother didn’t leave her any cooked food. She turned away but turned back and clapped her hands once. “I just remembered. The one about threatening life, I was the one who came up with it. I talked to Joshua’s creditors to threaten our lives, especially your mother, so that you can pay off the debt and that way we can get you out of our lives.”How could she do that thing? As Hazel entered the house, I picked up my clothes
NATHALIE’S POV-“How are you?” He asks.He has a lower pitch deep icy tone voice.“I’m asking you.” He asked impatiently.“Y-Yes?” I stammered. He sat down on the opposite seat. “Seat.” He ordered as he stared at my amber eyes.I was like a puppy following the owner’s orders.“You no longer experience a fever?”I stroked my neck and forehead. My body temperature was normal. I’m no longer burdened by weight.“I think I’m free from the fever. The woman who gave me food also said I no longer have a fever.”Sir Calix stood up. “I’ll send Esther again to help you get dressed. We’re going somewhere.”“Wait, I can’t waste… time…”Before I could complete my statement, he exited the room; it seemed he had heard nothing I said.I search my bag and found near the bed. Upon getting my bag I prepared to leave however, my phone rang.I took my phone first and answered the call from one of my work colleagues.“Nathalie, where are you? In two hours, the investor in the company will be here. Our fail
NATHALIE’S POV-I instantly drop my smile.“But why…” I asked after he ended the call. It’s hard to get into Lewis company. It’s almost impossible to get into that company. Out of a hundred applicants I was with when I applied, only three of us got in.So it was heavy on my heart with just one word from a Calix Zander Watson, I lost my job after years of hard work.“You said you’d accept the consequences?” He innocently question me back.“Yes, but…” Both of my shoulders slumped.I anticipated my firing, especially given our client’s is Watson company. It’s just... I couldn’t explain myself and prove my ability to deliver the presentation. The presentation I was about to do was the first time I would speak to many people again. I have a fear of public speaking. I will try to fight this fear of mine through this presentation. But it seems like this is not for me.“Thank you.” At least my coworkers weren’t affected.Sir Calix turned his full attention back to his iP*d, while mwe, I took
NATHALIE’S POV-Suddenly the door opened and a handsome tall man entered, carrying an envelope. The man approached Sir Calix and afterward revealed the contents of the brown envelope. He was wearing a blue dress shirt; the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. While looking at Sir Calix and the man he was talking to who were both standing, they looked like models while they were talking. The man shifted his gaze to my mother. “Ma’am Margaret, I've settled your hospital bill. You don’t have to worry about anything–”When the man’s gaze shifted to me, he stopped speaking.“Sir, she’s my daughter I’m talking about.” My mom introduced me to the man.The man approached me and extended his hand to me. “Hi, I’m Harrison Smith.”Smith?“And, you are?”I reached out his hand to shake hand to him. “Nathalie Davis. Nathalie.”“You know, your face looks familiar.”“My face?” I asked, wondering. He definitely didn’t see me on his social media accounts. Especially not in a news article, and certainly
NATHALIE’S POV-I couldn’t rest while we were on the trip to Watson company.I had so many questions for Sir Calix, especially about his help with my mother. But as he said, he will explain everything to me when we arrive at the company.“Sir Calix, how did you find out about my mother?” I couldn’t help but ask.Of all my concerns, the most important concern I have is that of my mother. As much as possible, I wanted to make sure that while I wasn’t by her side, she was fine.“The hospital called your phone last night about unpaid bills. You were sleeping soundly last night because of your fever, so I answered. I had your mother transferred to better ensure the success of her surgery.”Oh? That’s what happened. “Are you telling the truth?”Sir Calix spun his gaze to me with a frown. Did I offend him with my question? I just wanted to make sure.“I mean, you’re not a stalker, so you found out about my mother?”His eyes widened. He faked a cough as his stony gaze returned. “I-I’m not.”
NATHALIE’S POV-Once we arrived at the lobby, Avery approached us. One of the front desk clerks. The three times I had come here to visit Joshua, she was the one who let me in.Watson company security was tight. You had to have important business before you could enter as a visitor, and my reason for visiting Joshua was not a valid reason to enter here as a visitor.“What’s the problem here?” Avery asked as she approached us. “This woman is being reported as a stalker.” Answered the guard.I should not go with the guard, and I will fight that I am with Sir Calix. However, someone passed by at our side and was talking about Sir Calix having an important visitor.Rather than cause a scene and ruin Sir Calix’s reputation, I quietly went along so as not to cause trouble.“Stalker?” Avery asked in surprise. “She’s not a stalker. Uh, she’s my friend. Can I take care of her? I’ll take the punishment if she comes in again.”“As long as I don’t get involved.”“I’m sure of that.”The guard no
NATHALIE’S POV-This time, Sir Calix made sure I was inside his office. He left me again for a few hours and now just came back.“Why were you with Harrison earlier?” he asked, sitting in the other seat.“Uh, he saw me outside–in the lobby.”“Lobby? Why are you in the lobby?”“Uh… I forgot the direction you gave me. Then the guard made me leave.”He manfully raised one eyebrow. I gulp. That was so hot of him.“Didn’t you say I was with you?”“I couldn’t explain.”“Was the guard who let you out assigned to this floor?”I nodded slowly, unsure whether someone assigned that guard here or he was just passing by.Sir Calix took his phone from his pocket and made a call. “Check the footage on this floor. Fired the guard who dragged the woman with me.”My eyes widened at his order. Is it that easy for him to fired someone?“Wait–” I grabbed his attention. “It’s not the guard’s fault. It’s my fault–actually, it’s your fault too.”I closed my eyes for a second at the last thing I said.“What?
NATHALIE DAVIES’ POV-When Brianna and I arrived at the kitchen, it expressed time stopped as everyone here stopped what they were doing while looking at us.“Can I join in the cooking?” I asked permission, and then I looked at the mansion’s personal chef. “Brianna and I would like to cook, if possible?” I seek approval from Edwin, the 58 years’ old head chef of this mansion.“You and Brianna? Will you cook?”“If possible?” I query. “Brianna wants to cook for Sir Calix for their dinner.”“Their dinner?” the people here asked in unison.“Certainly.” Edwin took off his apron. “We’ll go out first so we don’t disturb your cooking. And you probably know the meaning…”I replied with a nod and a smile. What Edwin was referring to was that Brianna wasn’t used to being around many people yet.Brianna and I followed the people out of the kitchen with our eyes. When Brianna and I were alone in the kitchen, I sat down in front of her and took my hand off hers. “We are going to cook. Okay?”Bria
NATHALIE DAVIES’ POV-Every pair of eyes in front of me was full of concern for Brianna.“I told you all, it’s not just Ma’am Veronica who wants to eat with Brianna, she also wants to eat with her father.” Said Donna, one of the four maids here. She is 28 years old, she is only 2 years older than me, so we talk a bit more formally.“Why don’t you all seem to be sure?” I asked them, which caught their attention.“That’s how it is, Nathalie.” Lily replied, she is already 35 years old. “Ever since Ma’am Venice died, Brianna has become distant from everyone here.”“Because of that,” Emma continued, she is 36 years old. “We are not sure what Brianna wants, what we should do to make her happy.”“Just now we made sure from you that what Brianna wants to happen is for Sir Calix to eat together.” Linda said. She is also 35 years old.“And even Calix didn’t know that Brianna wanted to eat with her. None of us had any idea what Brianna wanted.” Esther also said.——————————After talking to them
NATHALIE DAVIES’ POV-Sir Calix was running through my mind all night–what he had told me.If I was to be fired, it would mean I had to pay my debts to him. This job was all I could count on for my mother and me for other expenses.I shook my head and dismissed the worry. I am still here at Sir Calix’s mansion, there was still hope I would stay. And instead of worrying, I should be working on a way to feed Brianna. When I left the room, I went straight to Brianna’s room. I knocked on the door three times before entering.I felt scared again as soon as I saw Brianna hadn’t touched her food that I had brought her last night before going to bed after her father had talked to me. But my worry for her prevailed. Even though she didn’t feel like eating, Brianna was definitely starving at this hour.I took the food tray and upon seeing Brianna, who was sleeping; I sighed silently.I left her room and went straight to the dining room.I was surprised to see Sir Calix eating breakfast, drink
NATHALIE DAVIES’ POV-I can’t deny that I smiled at Esther’s last words to me before heading to Briana’s room. It makes me feel like I’m a worthy person–in this job, even though I don’t know how my resume ended up with Sir Calix. Arriving outside Brianna’s room, I was about to knock, but it opened from the inside and I saw Ma’am Veronica.I went to the left side to make way for her.Once she stepped out in the room, she faced me, crossing her arms. “No matter what Calix calls you, the truth won’t change that you’re not right for her, so if you’re under the illusion that she’ll like you, stop it. Calix won’t like someone like you.” She said with a sneer.I wish I could let him know that I never thought about that. Being betrayed by the people I love, it’s like I’m afraid to love again. Maybe it’s because I’m just like this.“Try to hurt even the tip of my niece’s hair, and I will hold you accountable.”Maybe that’s why ma’am Veronica’s concern about Sir Calix is for Briana. She doesn
NATHALIE DAVIES’ POV-I glanced at Briana’s condition. She looked like a scared kitten as she looked back and forth between Sir Calix and Ma’am Veronica.I wanted to intervene and take Briana away so she wouldn’t witness this incident, but I couldn’t do it until Sir Calix gave me permission to take his daughter away. I am not her mother who has the right to take her under any circumstances.“Do you understand what you’re saying, Calix?” Ma’am Veronica had a grin on her lips. “Oh, do you know what you’re saying?”It seems that ma’am Veronica had something to say that Sir Calix could not answer those questions.“I doubt it.” Ma’am Veronica answered her own questions. “I’ll take my niece to her room first. I’ll talk to her first to make her understand that the only person she trusts in this mansion won’t be able to come for now.”Now I understand a little. Looks like Ma’am Veronica is the only person Briana trusts.Ma’am Veronica raised her hand towards Briana. “Come on, baby. I’ll tak
NATHALIE DAVIES’ POV-“Our baby Briana!” Ma’am Veronica called her niece sweetly. She excitedly approached Briana and hugged her. When Briana and I met our eyes, I sweetly smiled. For some unknown reason I can’t fathom, my heart beat faster with joy when I saw Briana.“Nathalie, are you okay?” Esther asked me in a whisper.I looked at Esther in surprise; her smile and nod followed. “Yes, I’m okay.”“Why are you crying?”My eyes widened. She gestured toward my face, afterward I stroked my cheek. There is part of my cheek that is wet. That’s why my eyes are hurting because of tears that I didn’t realize.“Are you sure you’re okay?” Esther asked me reassuringly.“Yes. I recalled something upon seeing Briana.” I confessed to her once more.It wasn’t hard to tell Esther the truth. It is possible that in this mansion, where I didn’t know what could happen to me, she was always there guiding me like a mother.Esther rubbed my back. She was silent, but her facial expression showed she unders
NATHALIE DAVIES’ POV-Fired? I haven’t started my job yet. Does that mean I’ll have right away to pay off all my debts to Sir Calix? What about my mother? I don’t have the money to pay off all the money he spent on my mother’s hospital bills yet.I’d rather work off all my debts because I have nothing to pay Sir Calix.“I can’t, Ma’am… I need this job.”“Do I look like I care? Get out of here before I call security and send you to jail. Get out!” She shouted.“No, ma’am. I need to talk to Sir Calix first.” I said bravely, even though inside I was shaking with fear.I can’t lose my job immediately, let alone end up in jail.“For a maid, you have the nerve to disobey me. Why, what are you holding? Are you flirting with my fiancé?”“No, ma’am. We have–”“You have, Calix what?!”Before I could explain, he grasped my hair. I felt the pain of my scalp from the force of his entanglement in my hair. “Whoever you are, you’re a flirt. You’ll regret flirting with my fiancé.”“Ma’am, I am not fli
NATHALIE DAVIES’ POV-After mommy’s discharge, William and I took her to the airport, along with the two female nurses who will be with her, to go to Hawaii.I gave the excuse to mommy that our house is being renovated, so she can’t go there first and to get her to agree to go to Hawaii. If he recovers here too, I won’t be able to take care of him and I won’t be able to visit him because of my work. It’s too heavy on my heart that I can’t watch over mommy in this situation. I just think that the most important thing is that mommy is in a good place and the private nurses will take her care of better she is with. Right now, I’m thinking about Sir Calix’s daughter. It is said that Briana will return from the vacation of Sir Calix’s parents today.I felt nervous. What if I couldn’t do my job? I sincerely want to repay all of Sir Calix’s help by also taking care of the person he loves–his child.“Nathalie, why do you seem anxious?” asked William, who was driving.“I’m nervous. I have no
NATHALIE DAVIES’ POV-Once my mom came out of the operation room, her whole body was shaking. She smiled after she glimpsed me.“Nurse, why is my mom’s body shaking?” I question nervously.“The anesthesia is still affecting her. After four to three five, its effects will wear off.”I noticed Sir Calix's glimpse on his wristwatch. “You will be responsible for me if Ma’am Margaret is harmed.”“Y-Yes, Sir.” The five nurses pushing Mommy’s hospital bed answered.I forgot to look at or invite Sir Calix. I was so worried that I just followed the nurses who were with my mother. When we got into the elevator, Sir Calix didn’t get in.“I will take the next elevator.” Sir Calix said when he noticed we were looking at him and waiting. One nurse pressed the close button. The elevator stopped twice, but no one got on to take Mommy to her room immediately.Once the nurses moved Mommy to the hospital bed, they told me again what the doctor had said a while ago about my mom’s fasting. They also expl
