PENELOPE

The next day, I received a reply from the human resource branch of Wayne Tech regarding the email I sent with my resignation later. According to their response, I couldn't resign without four weeks prior notice and do a proper handover to my replacement so, I now have to go back to the office and deal with Mr. Wayne.

A part of me wonders if he put them up to this but after speaking to Stacy, she confirmed that the rule does exist.

I haven’t heard a single word from Marcus since he dropped me off yesterday after the clinic. I couldn’t forget the look on his face, he looked like he had been given a death sentence.

I shrug off the feeling of pain and rejection that threatens to come back, I already cried myself to sleep again last night as I resigned myself to my fate.

Marcus clearly doesn’t want this baby, and I will have to raise my child on my own. Whatever, fuck him and fuck his help. I don’t need him.

I repeat the mantra in my head as I step out of the ele

***I go about my day, setting up Marcus’s schedule for the day, crosschecking to make sure I’ve prepared for his meetings, I go through some documentations for a final time before forwarding some to the printer. Some senior partners arrive for their scheduled meetings and I see them to the conference room, provide refreshments and handed out briefs before heading back to my desk to get more work done. The phone rings as I’m in the middle of stapling some papers, I bring it to my ear without looking.“Wayne Technologies, Mr. Wayne’s office”“Hey Penny”“Stacy?”“You didn’t come in yesterday, are you okay? I sent you a text but you didn’t reply”I dropped the papers, “Oh yeah, sorry, but I’m okay now, just needed a moment to rest. I must have missed your text, sorry”“Sorry babe, Mr. Wayne must be working you too hard. Maybe you should ask for some time off?”I used to pride myself for not needing any time off, it was his second rule during my interview.I still remember it like it was

**“So, I made a mistake, doesn’t mean I want to be tied to you for the rest of my life”“You already are” he pointed out with a flick of his index finger.“Well I’d rather not tighten the rope” I smirked. He says nothing for a moment and I busied myself cutting a piece of chicken, I popped it into my mouth, delicious. So I ate another piece speaking, “And I thought you didn’t believe me? according to you I am a jezebel whom took advantage of you in a moment of weakness”“I shouldn’t have said that”Was that his apology? He could damn well do better. “You shouldn’t have”A moment passed and Marcus glanced at me, “You know you’re trying a little too hard”I brought my glass to my lips “What do you mean?”“You want me, Penelope.”My smile drops, and I swear the sound my heartbeat could be heard from the back kitchens, I returned the glass to the table slowly, my palm turning slick with sweat, no, I didn’t, so what if I found him attractive? Hundreds of women did and it only meant I had a

It took some time before I finally got the courage to check my phone, after spending some time putting out my clothes for the week as I usually do every Sunday night.I frowned when I noticed I hadn’t gotten any calls to text messages, not even a voice mail. Excluding the unopened texts I’d gotten from Will.He was worried about me. and he had questions. So many questions. It was another reason I’d gone by Andy’s place I didn’t want o explain, didn’t know how.I haven’t even asked how he was faring after his physical altercation with Marcus the other day, Yes, I am a bad friend, I was well aware.I’ve just been somewhat preoccupied dealing with my own shit. Or trying not to deal.I didn’t know how to deal.Despite the brave front I put in the face of Marcus Wayne. I didn’t know what the hell I was going to do.Will was probably confused, seeing as I’d sworn up and down that there was nothing going on between Marcus and I, repeatedly, I probably looked like a big fat liar. Because he h

The moment we enter Marcus’s office I pull my wrist from his firm hold but he doesn’t let go.“You can let go now” I complain, making to leave, with any hope I’ll make my way to the restroom without bumping into anyone where I can die in peace.Stubbornly, he answers. “Not a chance” his grip tightening significantly, but not enough to bruise.I shuddered, a shiver sunning down my spine, and squeezed what I now realized to be his pocket handkerchief in my fist, damp from my saliva and likely some vomit. He must have given me the first thing within reach.I turn to him, “I need to use the restroom, I just puked I need to brush my teeth” I explain releasing a long breath, the taste of bile, the scent of vomit clinging to me, made me want to puke again. Finally, he nods but still doesn’t free me from his possessive hold, “Are you okay? Do you need… help?” He asks instead.I frown, “Help? With what? Putting toothpaste on the toothbrush or running the brush bristles over my mouth?” as usual

“W-hat is this?” I chocked out, records and more records.Very familiar records.Marcus answers, “Exactly what it looks like, you know, I wondered why you live in that run down apartment despite how well I paid you”I scan through it again to make sure my eye is not playing tricks on me. “Where did you get this?” My voice cracks as I look up at the man who I now realize is not just wealthy but also someone I should be wary of.In the document before me is my entire financial history and current financial record. My account balance, my loans, debt records, my mother’s pending health bills… everything is here.I don’t know how to react. What does he intend to do with this information?“Cutting a deal with a loan shark, that must have taken some balls”I was shaking my head. Fuck, this is wrong, so wrong. “You don’t understand-““Oh, I think I do” Marcus reached forward and snagged a piece of paper from my numb fingers, it was a copy of the signed document where I’d stated in writing the

I’m at my desk, furiously typing an email.“Careful there, whatever sin that thing committed it’s feeling very regretful, I assure you” bubbly voice calls in front of me. I glance up without pausing my movement, to see Stacy with her elbow popped on the edge of my desk. I spell out the final word and hit send then I inhaled. “Hi”One perfectly plucked blond eyebrow arched. “Hi? Who pissed you off?”I shook my head, then got go arranging the papers spewed across my desk.“Hey friend, are you okay? I heard you threw up at the board meeting” she made a face concerning coating her voice.Great.It couldn’t have been up to an hour ago and I’m sure everyone with a pair of ears would have heard about my little moment of shame. Gossips spreads like wild fire in this building.“Ugh…” I groan out. I swiped a hand over my forehead. “I’m okay, thanks for asking.”“forget taking some time off, maybe you should see a doctor, I think you might be coming down with something, you’ve been feeling off

She wasn’t taking this in any way I imagined, since I already started, might as well go all the way. I ignore her last comment and say instead. “Promise me who won’t mentioned any of this to anyone else” I warned, I might just kill her if rumors started spreading in the office. Her brows came together and she chuckles, “Is it a national secret? Please tell me you fucked the governor of New York.” She begs as if that would be the most existing news.I shake my head but don’t say anything else.Stacy doesn't relent however, “Please tell me who it is. I’m dying of suspense here. A man capable of making my good friend into a bad girl needs to be get a medal, at least some recognition”My eyes dratted to the large ass building spanning several blocks and floors, the large W at the top and can be seen from miles away. I turn back to Stacy to see her jaw went slack, so wide I was surprised I didn’t see her molars, and her eyes wider with shock. “You… didn’t” I tried to keep a straight face

MARCUSI might as well be invisible with how well Penelope has been ignoring my presence ever since our little discussion in my office. I didn’t regret completely my actions I suppose I might have taken it a little too far, I recall the way her shoulders dropped, her displeasure giving way to hurt as I pressed. It had to me done, I could see she wasn’t truly taking my proposal seriously, an now I only succeeded in making her upset. It isn’t good for her health. Stress was bad for the baby, that’s why I catch myself cracking a few jokes this during our catch up this morning to see if I can crack her stoic exterior. There wasn’t so much as a smile. No sarcastic comeback, not even a reaction that she heard.Mostly, I am unsure why she was determined to fight this, I wanted us to move past this to other things, if I can find out why she was so against marrying me I can find a way to convince her. While possessing a friendly demeanor, it took me a this to realized I knew nothing about her p

I kept my eyes forward placing one foot in front of the other as I made my was to the elevator pushed the call button and waited for the car to arrive. Thankfully I didn’t have to wait too long before it arrived and I jumped in, except a few others got on alongside me and the weird looks continued. Well jokes on them but a little staring and reprimand from the boss was not the end of the world. And as long as I had a job here, they had to deal with it. Period. I offered a curt nod to an older gentleman, Mr Philip who got in on the fifth floor. At least he was nice enough to meet my eyes this fine morning and not like everyone else. Who kept glancing at me out the side of their eyes and exchanging silent looks with each other. Jokes on them once more because the looks weren’t very silent. I could practically hear the ‘he

I was wrong. Marcus Wayne is not sweet and not soft. The day starts out like every other, going over his schedule like we do every morning, confirming meetings with other personal assistants and secretaries over the phone, going over reports, and attending a few meetings, so, a normal morning. And then by afternoon, I have my chair leaned as far back as possible, my shoes off, to get the blood flowing back into my feet that’s been pinched in the heeled peep toes I wore today, a cute pair but damn, there was a pain.I have my cell tucked between the side of my cheek and shoulder, chewing slightly on the end of a pen.“He can be so over-controlling it’s getting out of hand Pen, because he is an investor in the company he thinks she can tell me how to run my own company,” Will said over the phone making me frown. I knew he and his dad had a rocky relationship. While he was what most people would refer to as a trust fund baby, Will was very hard working. “He called a board meeting wit

**Get here.I looked at the message again and again.Get here?I got up despite my better instincts and made my way into his office. “Did you need me?”“Yes, I have the revision you wanted” he nodded at the document on the table his head bowed as he read something from an iPad.“And you couldn't think of anything else to say than 'get here'?” Marcus finally gave me his attention “What would you have rather I said?”I cat walked forward “Oh, I donno, maybe something like, Dear penelope, kindly make your way into my office when you have a spare moment-”“Now you're just pushing it. Go through it, if you have no complaints, kindly sign before I get back” I knew he had a meeting with the lawyers this afternoon.“But I'm hungry, and it's almost lunch” I pouted. I didn't do well on an empty stomach. He got up and buttoned his jacket before bending to get his briefcase “Have

**It was another day in the office and I was determined to be productive, I had my antenna appointment this afternoon and I wanted to be relaxed and in a good mood when the time came. The universe must want to shit all over my plans because the elevator pinged and Marcus Wayne, AKA my boss and someone I did not want to talk to walked right not. His briefcase in on hand, the other in his pocket as he strolled forward without a single good morning to anyone. “In my office Miss Cruz” he called without a glance in my direction. Why couldn’t I be lucky like everyone else and the universe let him forget I exist? Why? I continued scrolling through my emails making note of what I need to add to my calendar keeping on eye on the time. It’s couldn’t have been more than two minutes he strode in the door slid open revealing Marcus, heading straight in my direction. Oh shit.He made his way around the table, his fingers wrapping around my arm I let out a gasp as I was guided out of my chair wi

**I cannot believe him. I returned to my desk only to realize I’d forgotten my iPad so I stormed back in, snatched my tablet, and strode out adding an extra sway in my hips.I swear I thought I heard a rumbling sound as I slammed the door shut behind me.Then I hurried myself to work the next few hours. Remembering my promise to Will I decided to hit him up.Me: Up for that rain check on lunch? His reply is a location with two question marks. I notice his sneaky attempt to weasel out of letting me choose a place, I knew he’d pick somewhere fancy, good thing he’d be paying, no way that was changing. I send a reply.Me: You got it. It. With my plans for lunch settled, I went back to my work. When afternoon came, I threw my purse over my office and strode to the elevator without a word to my employee. Texting a reply to Stacy who is on yet another lunch date with dear Bernard, those two were getting serious. I’d been expecting it hence my making plans with Will. She sends anothe

MARCUS I toss the hard copy paperwork of the contract I spent the entire weekend drafting on my huge office desk. Penelope looks up at me with a confused expression. “What’s that?”  she asked and went back to her tapping away an iPad. “Our marriage contract”She glanced at me and then the bound papers before glancing back at me “Since when do you draft your own documents? If someone had asked me I’d have sworn you didn’t know what the MS Word software looked like” “I don’t, I used scrivener” I kept a serious expression and she scoffed, rolling those large green eyes, I didn’t know too many employees that took as much liberty as she did, were anyone else to roll their eyes at me in the same vicinity, they’d be rolling their eyes out of the building along with their personal belongings.“It looks nearly as thick as a textbook. What did you include in here?” Those eyes narrow her eyes suspiciously at me and I momentarily lose my train of thought, I’m suddenly wondering why I never

I’d spent all morning as I usually do on weekends, starting with cleaning then I run to a nearby groceries to stuck up on food. I’d hoped to get started on my laundry but my washing machine decided not to start up, so I had to visit a nearby laundromat, it was around eleven when I got to the coffee shop claimed a table and waited sipping my vanilla milkshake smoothie, watching other patrons go about their lives. The doorbell sounded and I looked up, she saw me immediately without having to wave my hand likely because the cafe was small.Andy strode over and claimed the empty chair in front of me and tossed her sunglasses on the table. “Iced American, two sugar” I offered nodding at the coffee cup on the table. I’d ordered it when I arrived along with my smoothie already knowing her preferred drink.“How’s Wayne taking it?” she asked getting right to it. She was never one to beat around the bush. I had texted her first thing this morning with the news. She sent me a time and location

The walk back to the office was fast, Marcus stalking straight to his office without a single backward glance. What’d I say? So moody.I tossed my bag on the table and brought out my phone to see if I had any notifications. None. So I got to work. I had a busload of documentation to proofread due to my absence yesterday and I immediately got to it.The phone rang about twenty minutes later, keeping my gaze on my computer I leaned over with one hand and brought the phone to my ear. “Wayne Technology, Marcus Wayne office-““I have a thirty-minute window” a voice droned in my ear “I thought we might make good use of it.” “By…? I trailed off” my eyes widening by the possibilities.“Working on our list” Right, the never ending list, get your mind out of the gutter girlie, I shoved my chair back, slipping on my shoes. “Okay, I’ll bring my note” I dug through my bag for the notebook and slipped out, snagged a pen from my cup, and made my way into his office humming a tune under my brea

I’ll have James meet us at the front” Marcus says, typing away on his phone, I followed beside him as he moved towards the entrance. He motioned for me to step in through the revolving door.“There’s no need, we’re not going far,” I tell him when he comes out behind me and I begin to walk. Marcus pockets his phone, his long legs eating up the space in two large steps and he is beside me once more. We walk past other New Yorkers going about their days. Decked out in formal wear, the men carrying briefcases, the ladies large purses such as my own to fit just about everything we would be needing throughout the day. It was like every other day excluding who was walking by my side and that I was almost eight weeks pregnant. I pushed back the thought and crossed to road. “Would you slow down?” strong fingers wrapped around my wrist.“Oh, sorry, I’m usually in a hurry to get a good space at the nice eateries, it's lunch hour after all and before you know it everyone would be crawling out o
