Mina

“Wait, wait, wait. Just wait a minute.”

Emerson’s voice is sharp, filled with a tension that makes me press my lips together. The mattress shifts as he sits down at the edge of the bed, and I keep my gaze fixed on the floor.

I can’t look at him right now.

“What did you say?” He asks, too calmly

I can’t believe I said it either.

The words tumbled out before I could catch them, but they were out there now, hanging heavy between us. There’s no taking them back.

“I don’t think we should be getting married right now.” The words are quieter this time but no less firm. “I really think that we should just stop.”

The silence that follows is thick, and suffocating. I can feel the weight of his stare, the building storm in his eyes. He’s mad—he has to be. And I don’t blame him. Everything is so... twisted, so tangled in my head right now.

“Mina.”

“Yes?”

His voice is strained like he’s holding back a million things he wants to say.

“Would you look at me, please?”

I swallow hard.

“I don’t

I can’t help it. The words he said, the look in his eyes, the anguish in his voice—I never want to hear it again. I never want him to feel that way again. Before I can stop myself, I rush toward him.He looks at me, startled, as I come toward him, but he opens his arms, letting me fall into his embrace. His arms close around me, holding me tightly, and I bury my face against his chest. For whatever reason, tears are in my eyes, and I feel the dampness of his tears against my forehead. We cling to each other, sobbing into each other’s shoulders, sharing everything we’ve both been carrying. After what feels like forever, our emotions finally settle. I pull back slightly, just enough to see his face. His eyes are searching mine, full of questions. Is this goodbye? Is this the last time he gets to hold me?I shake my head, tears slipping down my cheeks. “No. No, I’m not leaving you. I can’t leave you.”Relief floods his features, but there’s still uncertainty there.“You might not know

  • MARRYING My FATHER-IN-LAW    Your Feelings For Him

After a silent while, Emerson just looks… tired. Defeated. The weight of the conversation pressed down on him. He exhales slowly, his hands gripping his knees like he's steadying himself. Then, finally, he begins."Mina, I di—""No, Emerson." I cut him off, shaking my head. "I actually think you meant those words. I know you. I know how you act when you say something you don't mean and you mean it." My voice wavers slightly. "I looked at you that night, and I knew—in my heart—that you meant it. So don’t sit here and tell me you didn’t."I see his shoulders tense, but he stays quiet."And sitting there, at that dinner, all I could think was… if this is what you really think of me, what the hell am I even doing here?"Emerson closes his eyes briefly, my words sinking in. "Mina, no," he says softly. "I saw the change in you, but I didn’t know why. I didn’t know if it was because you didn’t want to be there, or because you were mad at Eric, or because of your sister, or even because of T

I open my mouth, but my thoughts are spiralling too fast."This is about the fact that—" I stop myself. "Okay, you’re confusing me right now.""No, don’t filter yourself. Just say it." His voice is steady. "Say it exactly how it is. We’re just talking."I swallow, my pulse hammering. And then—"This is about the fact that you think what Eric did to me is okay."Emerson’s eyes widen slightly, but he doesn’t interrupt."I think…" I take a breath, forcing myself to say the words that have been eating at me. "I think that some of the things you just said to me right now prove that you believe what Eric and Rita did to me is fine. That they deserve to go scot-free."Emerson shakes his head instantly. "No, Mina. That’s not—""Why?" My voice is rising now. "Because he’s your son? Because when I was married to your son, I couldn’t give you grandchildren? Is that why? Because now that he’s with her, he can finally make you a grandfather? Because now your bloodline has a chance to grow?"His f

"No, listen to me," Emmerson says as he squeezes my hand. "I don’t want you to wake up one day, years from now, and realize you had no idea what you were doing. I don’t want you to fall deeper, only to realize that you were still running from something else."His eyes search mine, and I feel my defences cracking."That kind of pain would be unbearable," he says. "For both of us."I can barely breathe."So yes, Mina. I agree with you." He takes a slow breath. "We should postpone the wedding."I am silent.Caught in the web of my own making.Just minutes ago, I thought postponing the wedding—taking time to work on myself—was the right choice. I want to say yes. I want to believe that no matter what, we would have ended up together. But he doesn't give me the chance."I don't know," he whispers.A lump forms in my throat. "You still regret it, don't you?""Regret what?""The first time we slept together," I say, studying his face. "You regret that night. I always knew you felt guilty about it. That’s why you agreed to marry me, isn’t it? Because you felt guilty. And now, I realize you never forgave yourself for that night."His jaw tightens. He looks away."It’s not like I regret that night," he admits after a long pause. "I just think I could have done better.""But you did," I argue. "That night, I was lost. I felt like my life was over. I acted strong, but inside, I was breaking. And then, you—" I swallow hard, my voice shaking. "You gave me hope. You made me believe there was something to hold onto. That night was special, Emerson. And I just can't take it.It's too much.So I change tactics."So... what are we doing?" My voice wavers. "Are we postponing the wedding? Are we cancelling it?" My stomach churns as I force the words out. "What about us? What about our engagement? Are we still engaged? Are we still dating? What does this all mean?"I don't know what I expect him to say, but I need something—anything.Emerson exhales, rubbing the back of his neck. "I think, for now, we should postpone the wedding," he says carefully. "Maybe in a month or two. Or three. Just enough time." He glances at me as if gauging my reaction. "Maybe three to six months would be good. Or a whole year, if that’s what you need."I stare at him, my mind racing."And if, at any point, you feel like it," he continues, his voice softer now, "you can cancel the wedding. That decision will be entirely in your hands."I hate this.I hate that he's making the decisions but acting like I have control when, in reality, I have none."So people

"I'm just wondering what you're going to say next," I murmur, my voice sharp with unspoken accusations. "Am I about to sign an NDA?"His head snaps up, and for the first time, Emerson looks truly caught off guard. He wasn’t expecting this. He wasn’t expecting me to say this. I see it in the way his jaw tightens, in the flicker of something—shock, maybe even guilt—in his eyes.I give him a sly smile, though inside, I feel like I’m crumbling."Mina…" he exhales, shaking his head. "I'm not talking about this. I think you need some rest. I'm going to let you be now."He shifts to stand, but before he can take a step, I stop him."What?" I say, my voice laced with bitterness. "No papers for me to sign? Isn’t that what you want to rush back to?"His expression hardens. His voice drops."Mina," he says, his tone a quiet warning. My whole life was breaking apart, shattering into pieces I didn’t know how to pick up.When I divorced Eric, I had a plan. I threw myself into work—divorce, take revenge, move on. Right now, I had nothing.Because Emerson had broken me in a way I couldn’t even explain. How do I explain it to someone else when I can’t even understand it myself? And it hurts. Eric opened his mouth, hesitating. "I was just—1... We ...."But he seemed stuck. His usual confidence wavered, and I could see the turmoil in his eyes. So, I took the initiative for him."Eric just came to see me," I said, keeping my voice light. "He heard I was pregnant and wanted to tell me how happy and excited he was that he’s getting a sibling."I turned to Eric and gave him a small smile."We were just hashing out our little differences," I continued, "because now, we’re going to be a real family."Eric stood up abruptly, nodding his head. "Yeah, yeah, yeah… I’m just gonna— I’m gonna go."Emerson watched him closely. "Okay. Did you need anything?"Eric didn’t look fine. His usual sharp presence was replaced by something… lost.He just kept nodding. "I just— I have to clear my head. I’m just— I’m going to go."Emerson stepped aside, allowing him to pass. Eric walked out without another word.

"Of course, I am serious, Mina," Eric said, unwavering. "I have never been serious about something as much as I am serious about this—about us."He leaned forward, his eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that made my skin crawl. "Mina, what’s stopping you? What’s keeping you back?"I opened my mouth, ready to tell him exactly what was stopping me, but he cut me off before I could even form the words."I know you don’t love my father," he pressed on. "I mean, you two weren't even together a few days ago. And suddenly, the moment he finds out you’re pregnant, you’re back together? Just like that?" He scoffed. "You and I both know that’s not real. You weren’t with him because you loved him. You were with him for revenge—because of me. Because you still love me."I clenched my fists, as I forced myself to stay calm.He wasn’t finished. "Do you really want to start a family with my father? For God’s sake, Mina, he’s an old man!" His voice

"Thank you," I said, smiling genuinely at Madeline. Her response was a soft laugh as if she couldn’t help herself. I wasn’t upset by her questions, though, and I didn’t think much of it.Emmerson's voice cut through the silence. "Mina has been through a lot, so I’m going to get her to bed upstairs to relax." He turned towards Madeline. "Madeline, I’m sure you’ve prepared the soup, can you bring it up in about 15 minutes so I can help her get showered and changed?"Madeline nodded, looking at me. "Of course."With that, Madeline left towards the kitchen, and everyone else dispersed. Emerson then carried me up the stairs. He prepared the bath for me, making sure the water temperature was just right. We then found ourselves in a debate about whether he should give me a bath. Of course, he won, insisting that I needed help. There was something tender in the way he handled me, every movement was made with love and care. After the bath, he helped me apply oil to my skin, the sensation soo

She looked at me with that twisted, dark smile, the one that told me she thought she had won. As if she had accomplished exactly what she came here to do. But she was still standing in my room, still breathing the same air as me, still existing in my space, and I couldn’t take it. The anger, the pain, the years of resentment came over me. My voice came out in a scream, raw and filled with fury. "Get out! Get out, get out, get out!" The door burst open. A nurse rushed in, followed closely by Trey. His eyes darted between me and my mother, concern into his face. "What’s going on?" he demanded. "Mina, what happened?" I pointed a shaking hand at Kristy. "I don’t want to see this woman ever again in my life!" My voice was hoarse, but I didn’t care. "I’ll get a restraining order if I have to. If I ever see you again, I swear I will make you regret it." The words cut through the air.

She looked at me for a long moment before speaking again."I am willing to give you another chance." She announced.A surprised cough escaped my lips. "A chance?" I repeated, narrowing my eyes. "A chance to do what, exactly?""A chance to prove that you have wished no ill for your sister," she said firmly. "To prove that you actually are part of this family."A disbelieving chuckle slipped past my lips, but my mother didn’t flinch. She pressed on as if she truly believed she held all the power in this conversation."You’re going to call Eric," she continued. "You’re going to tell him that everything that happened with Trey was wrong. You're going to talk to Trey and convince him to tell Eric that maybe he was lying. Just… find something. Make up anything. But make sure that Eric calls Rita, apologizes, and takes your sister back home where she belongs."She said it as if the matter was settled as if she had the final say.

By the time we turned back towards the room, we noticed that the doctor had already left. I guess there had been too much crying in the room. I found myself laughing. "I'm so happy, Emerson." He grinned, his excitement evident. "I'm even happier. You don’t know how I’m feeling right now. I want to—" He let out a breathless laugh. "I want to dance. I want to jump with joy. I want to scream it from the top of this building. I'm going to be a dad, Mina!" "And I'm going to be a mom," I said, my voice breaking as fresh tears welled in my eyes. Emerson's expression softened. "Oh my God, why are you still crying? I don’t think it’s good for the baby to cry so much." "I know," I sniffled, wiping my eyes. "I’m going to try. I really am. But I don’t know how to stop—I’m just so happy." At that moment, my stomach let out a loud rumble. Emerson chuckled. "Looks like our baby is hu

And because you know, I trust that you’ll take better care of yourself from here on out.”I sniffled, nodding, still feeling the weight of my mistakes.“But I need you to stop panicking, Mina,” she continued. “Stress will raise your blood pressure, and that’s not good for the baby. My tongue felt heavy like it was weighed down by all that I couldn’t bring myself to say.“Come on, what is it?” Emerson urged, his voice softer now, careful. “Tell me whatever it is. A fear that told me he was bracing himself for the worst.I opened my mouth, but no words came out. Before I could even attempt to find them, Trey spoke up. “We’re still waiting for the results. There hasn’t been a concrete answer yet.”Emerson exhaled, his shoulders losing a fraction of their tension. “What do you mean, concrete answer? What did the doctor say? What could it be?”“It’s fine,” I said quickly, nodding as I squeezed his hand. “Just wait for the results.”He looked at me, then at our intertwined fingers, and for some reason, my hands were trembling. Then he turned to Trey. “Treyson, can I talk to you aside for a minute?”Panic spiked in my chest. I clutched Emerson’s hand tighter. “No.
