ZARA'S POV
The next day came with a sense of urgency. Every minute felt like a countdown to freedom. I had packed a small bag with just my essentials and hid it at the back of my closet. It was getting closer to the time for the party. Mrs Adler had informed me that Kai was already on his flight back to Berlin. It was just a two-hour flight, and he would be here soon. Mrs Adler had outdone herself with the party and gone all out for the celebration, and I was just another accessory to display. Madam Tess brought in the dress Mrs Adler had selected for me. It was a stunning emerald green gown that clung to my body in all the right places. The dress symbolized everything I despised about my life here, beautiful on the outside but a cave of thorns inside. “Let me help you with this dear,” Madam Tess said, her voice gentle. “Thank you,” I replied, forcing a smile. As she helped me with the dress, my mind was elsewhere, focused on my escape plan and the perfect timing to sneak out of there before Kai arrived. By the time I was ready, the house had transformed into a grand venue for the celebration. The tables were decorated with elegant floral arrangements, and the aroma of gourmet food coming from the kitchen filled the whole house. Guests began to arrive and their laughter and chattering filled the air. At 18:00, the party was in full swing. Mrs Adler, dressed in an opulent gown, greeted the guest with a warm smile. My father and Lena arrived too, mingling with the other guests. I spotted my father deep in conversation with some business associates and Lena charmed everyone with beauty and elegance. I received a text from Liam. ‘I'm here. Waiting outside by the back gate. Come outside when you're ready.’ My heart skipped a beat and I took a deep breath. It was time. I made my way through the house, greeting all the guests and smiling politely. “Zara,” Mrs Adler called from behind. “You look stunning, Kai won't be able to take his eyes off you when he sees you.” I forced a smile. “Thank you.” “You guys' marriage had been done without a proper celebration because of the circumstances but this party would make up for it,” She started. “Your marriage would officially be announced to the world.” Her words sounded like I was being sentenced to life imprisonment. ‘My life will be over if I'm announced as Kai Adler's wife, I would never be able to escape from him,’ I thought silently. “I need to use the restroom,” I said. “Excuse me.” maintaining a forced smile the whole time. It was time to make my move, Kai would arrive any moment from now. I excused myself quietly from the party, went to my room, changed into something comfortable and grabbed my bag. My heart pounded as I slipped away from the house through the back door and made my way to the back gate. I moved quickly but quietly, making sure no one saw me. Finally reaching the back gate, my hands trembled as I opened it quietly and stepped outside. Liam was waiting by the car, his tall, athletic frame leaning against it casually. His fine, dirty blond hair caught the fading sunlight, and his cool blue eyes lit up as he saw me. He looked just as I remembered, handsome, with a charming smile that could melt anyone's heart. ‘Zara,” he said, pulling me into a tight embrace. “I’ve missed you so much.” “I've missed you too,” I whispered, tears pricking at my eyes. We kissed, and for a moment everything else faded away. “We need to go,” Liam said, his voice gently but urgent. I nodded. Getting into the car, Liam took the wheel and drove. Leaving the mansion and my miserable life behind. As the car sped down the quiet street, I felt a mix of fear and ecstasy. I glanced back at the mansion one last time, knowing I was leaving behind the nightmare that had consumed my life. I switched off my phone to avoid phone calls when they finally realized I was gone. “Are you okay,” Liam asked, his hand finding mine. “Better now,” I replied, squeezing his hand. “Thanks for helping me.” “Always,” he said, his eyes serious. “We're in this together.” After driving for almost two hours. “Where are we going,” I asked. “Your absence would have been noticed by now. Judging by the reputation of the Adlers they won't sit still.” He replied. “We are going to a very safe and secluded place to settle for the night, and you can leave for Hamburg before dawn.” I nodded in agreement. “I've informed my aunt that you would be staying with her for now and she had promised not to mention it to anyone. So, you shouldn't worry about anything.” He concluded. At the safe house, Liam told me how he had been, his plan and how he had never stopped thinking about me. I told him about the baby, and he promised to protect us both. We spent the rest of the night chatting and catching up.KAI'S POVWhen I woke up on the hospital bed two days ago, the world felt different, it was as if I had been reborn. I was surrounded by the sounds of medical equipment and the soft murmurs of the hospital staff. My body still aches, but it was much better than when I first woke up; it was a dull pain and a reminder that I made it alive, against all odds, I had survived and was given another chance in life. The room was private, with a large window letting in the morning sunlight. I moved my wheelchair closer to the window and stared at the view outside. I felt weak but more alive than I had in months. My first thoughts were my mother, my unborn child and of course, Zara, my supposed wife who is carrying my child.I left without telling them the truth so as not to get my mother scared or worried. Zara wouldn't care less if anything happened to me. I'm sure Ethan would have broken the news to them about my successful surgery. I had told the doctor to inform him about the outcome of
KAI'S POV "Where in hell is she?!" My fist banged against the table, and the occupants of the room flinched in reflex. Zara had just disappeared into thin air. My patience was literally running thin.Ethan rubbed his temples, just as frustrated as I was. "Kai, we will be doing everything that we can. But it's like she's just vanished into thin air.""That is not good enough!" I cracked, my temper flaring. "My wife's out there, pregnant with my child, and you're telling me there's no trace of her. No single lead?"Inside the room were her father, Mr Klein, and her sister Lena. Mr Klein was pale and continued to shift from one leg to the other, furrows of worry had leached color from his features. "Kai, we're just simply too worried," Mr Klein began with a quivering voice. "We can't do anything without more information. Who could have helped her runaway like this?""Serious? Maybe you'd better ask your daughter! Who knows what she's been doing behind my back?" I shot back, still sar
"Kai, are you sure about this?" Ethan's voice was low, yet, from where we sat in my office, waiting for Lena to arrive, I felt the tautness in his tone.I nodded, not taking my eyes off the door. "She's the only lead we have. If Zara told anyone about her plan, it would be her sister."Ethan flopped back in his chair, expressionless. "I hope you are right. If she knows anything, though, she isn't going to make it easy.""She'll talk," I said, hardening my voice. "One way or another, she'll talk."Uneasy silence crawled minutes while my mind kept racing on and on. Security tapes kept running over in my head, the picture of Zara getting into that car with some mystery man, her image branded into my brain, and I flared up in a burning rage that just would not die. I had to know who'd helped her.Again, the silence was broken by someone else's knock on the door, and Ethan stood up to let her in. Lena walked in looking nervous; her eyes flitted from Ethan back to me, trying to be bold, tho
CHAPTER 10"Tell me where she is, Liam." My voice came out surprisingly flat. The air was tight with tension, taut, seeming as if the walls themselves were holding their breath.Liam is the son of my company's Legal advisor. I did my findings after seeing him in the CCTV footage and discovered that he was Zara's ex-boyfriend. It all made sense now. Liam's jaw was clenched tight as he looked up at me, but in his eyes, I could see the flicker of fear. He was trying to be brave, but I knew better. I could smell weakness, and I was going to use that weakness against him."Mr Adler, I don't know where she is," Liam persisted, shaking his voice. "She just wanted out, and I helped her. That is all."I was closer now, inches from his face. "You want me to believe that? You helped her get away from me, and now you think you can just feign ignorance? You know where she is, Liam. You know, and you're going to tell me.".Liam swallowed, his Adam's apple rising, then beginning to bob nervously.
ZARA'S POV "Are you quite sure about this, Zara?" The lady I've been staying with, Margaret asked, filling her eyes with concern, as she handed me a steaming cup of tea. With my hands wrapped around the mug, smelling first the soothing aroma of the chamomile, I responded, "Yes, Aunt Margaret. I have thought long and hard about it. This is the best decision for me."She heaved a sigh and sat down on the other side of me at the narrow kitchen table. In the fine wood grain that stretched between us, we could see the first sunbeams filtered through the lace curtains. "All I want is for you to be sure, dear. Once it's done, there's no going back.""I know," I said, infuriated, reaching out for the cup of tea and taking a sip to calm myself. "But bringing a child into this world under these conditions… that is not fair to anyone, let alone the baby."She reached across the table, her palm coming to rest over mine. It was a warm touch, very comforting in its way, much like everything that w
Kai. He stood his ground. His big presence crowded the small room. His dark eyes sparked—anger, but also something else that I couldn't quite put my finger on. Maybe relief? Possession? Anger? But behind him, his men were holding the nurse and security guard without a move, effectively closing off any route of exit for them."Kai?" I tried whispering, so my voice would be soft, gentle, and quite unsure.A step closer, his eyes nailed into mine. "You think you can hide from me, Zara? You think I wouldn't find you?"My very blood went cold as something grasped onto each part of me in fear. This wasn't how this was supposed to happen. He wasn't supposed to find me."How… how did you find me?" I stuttered backwards until my back hit the wall. His lips twisted into something wicked. “Now. Did you think Liam's family would keep you from me? From your husband? No one can separate us, sweetheart."I balled my fists. Psycho to some semblance of bravery, at least. "I don't belong to you, Kai.

An hour went by with me pacing up and down my office floor, thoughts churning of what I would do when finally I had Zara back within my grasp. Mine. And she needed reminding of the fact. My phone buzzed an hour later with a new message that I grasped eagerly and read with so much anticipation. "I found her," the words said. "She is being held with an old Lady in a small cottage on the outskirts of town. Attached is the address." A slow, dangerous smile spread across my face. Now Zara was so near, this close, so near to being back to where she belonged. Not a minute could be wasted, and I instinctively tugged at my jacket, began for the door, and texted Ethan, That he should meet me by the car. We were off to see Zara, and it was high time that she learned she couldn't get away with it. The sun dipped under the horizon as Ethan and I turned into the drive, dragging long shadows across the landscape. The tension stirred between us, focusing into a core, sharp edge in the vacuum of s
