ZARA'S POV

Ethan's announcement yesterday left me dangling over the edge. I was up all night thinking about how the rest of my life was going to be a living hell once KKaireturned.

I thought I had it all planned out–Kai's death, my freedom and my life with Liam. But fate had other plans to snatch away my freedom forever, by giving Kai another chance to live.

‘I can't stay trapped with Kai for the rest of my life. I have to get out here, I have to run far away from the Adlers and my family.’ The thought echoed in my head, fueling my determination. I couldn't give up on my freedom yet.

I was in my room, pacing and trying to formulate a plan, when I heard Mrs Adler's voice from the living room, which filled the whole house.

“Zara, dear!” she called out, her tone unusually cheerful. “I have wonderful news!”

I forced a smile and walked downstairs, my heart sinking with every step. Mrs Adler stood in the foyer, beaming.

“Kai has regained consciousness,” She announced. “He called me personally. He'll be arriving home tomorrow evening.”

My stomach churned at the news. So soon. ‘Every silver lining in this house comes with a dark cloud for me.’ I thought bitterly. “It's as if happiness is a luxury I'm not allowed to have,” I murmured, my voice barely above a whisper.

She began issuing instructions to the staff, her voice brimming with excitement.

“Madam Tess,” she said to the housekeeper. “We must prepare a grand celebration for Kai's return. I want the best dishes, and we need to invite all our closest friends and associates.

“Of course, Ma'am,” Madam Tess replied, already making notes. “We'll start the preparations immediately.”

The house became a hub of activity as the staff got to work. Maids hurried around, cleaning and putting out flowers. Madam Tess and Mrs Adler planned the guest list and food, making sure everything was just right.

The whole house was being made ready for the big party. I watched as everyone prepared, feeling a mix of interest and distance.

A plan formed in my head–This party could be my chance to escape. With a crowd of guests, there would be less attention on me. Amid the chaotic celebration, I could quietly slip away, unnoticed. This is the perfect opportunity to break free from this prison.

I returned to my room, my mind racing. I needed to act fast. But I couldn't do this alone, I needed help. My family wasn't an option; I couldn't tell them about my escape plan, or else they would find a way to stop me. They wouldn't want to get in trouble with Kai.

I needed someone from outside who could find a place out of Berlin for me to stay low for a while. I began to pace around my room as I thought of whom I could call for help.

A name popped up in my head ‘Liam.’ I grabbed my phone and dialled Liam's number, my hands trembling. I felt anxious as the phone kept on ringing till it stopped.

I dialled again, and he answered immediately on the second ring.

“Liam, I need your help,” I said urgently.

“Zara, what's wrong? Are you okay?” He asked, his voice filled with concern.

“Kai's coming back tomorrow, and his mother is throwing a party for him. I need to escape during the party, while everyone is distracted.” I rushed the words.

“Zara, calm down and explain what's going on. Why is a party being thrown for Kai's return? Wasn't he in London for a business meeting?” He asked

“The thing is, Kai didn't travel for a business meeting but for surgery. He's completely cured, and he's coming back tomorrow.” I explained.

“That cunning bastard,” Liam muttered.

“This party is my only chance to get out of here, or else I'll be stuck here with Kai, for the rest of my life,” I started desperately. “I need your help, Liam.”

There was a pause.“All right, I'll help you.” Liam spoke firmly. “What time is the party tomorrow?” He asked.

“It's 18:00,” I replied, my voice steady.

“All right. I'll be waiting in the car outside Kai's mansion as soon as the party starts. So, you can meet me outside when you get the chance.” Liam instructed.

“Does Lena know about this?” He inquired.

“No, I didn't tell anyone. I just need a place far from Berlin, to hide.” I confessed.

“Okay. I have a relative who lives in a small town in Hamburg. It's a 10-hour drive away from here. I'll prepare everything and send you to her, you can stay there as long as you want.” Liam offered.

“Pack only your essentials, to avoid being caught. I'll take care of the rest.” He advised.

“Thank you, Liam,” I said, relief washed over me. “I don't know what I'd do without you.”

“I'll do anything for you, Zara. Be ready tomorrow night; I'll text you once I get there.” Liam promised.

“I'll get you out of there.” He assured me.

“I love you so much, Liam,” I whispered

“I love you too, Zara.” He whispered back.

After hanging up, I felt a renewed sense of determination. I spent the rest of the day discreetly packing my essentials and planning my escape route. I had to make sure no one noticed anything amiss.

As I lay In bed that night, my mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. This was it. My chance to break free. I had to be careful and precise. One wrong move and I could lose everything. But if I succeeded, I could finally be free from Kai.

I placed my hand on my belly and thought about what would happen to the baby when I left. ‘The Adlers won't care about the baby anymore, they only wanted it because Kai was almost dead. But now he has plenty of time to settle down, get married and have kids, as many as he wants,” a voice echoed in my head.

For now, getting out of here is my main priority. I'll worry about what to do with the baby later.

My heart pounded with a mix of fear and excitement as I finalized my plan. Tomorrow night, I will escape. Tomorrow night I will begin a new life.

ZARA'S POV The next day came with a sense of urgency. Every minute felt like a countdown to freedom. I had packed a small bag with just my essentials and hid it at the back of my closet. It was getting closer to the time for the party. Mrs Adler had informed me that Kai was already on his flight back to Berlin. It was just a two-hour flight, and he would be here soon. Mrs Adler had outdone herself with the party and gone all out for the celebration, and I was just another accessory to display.Madam Tess brought in the dress Mrs Adler had selected for me. It was a stunning emerald green gown that clung to my body in all the right places. The dress symbolized everything I despised about my life here, beautiful on the outside but a cave of thorns inside.“Let me help you with this dear,” Madam Tess said, her voice gentle.“Thank you,” I replied, forcing a smile. As she helped me with the dress, my mind was elsewhere, focused on my escape plan and the perfect timing to sneak out of the

KAI'S POVWhen I woke up on the hospital bed two days ago, the world felt different, it was as if I had been reborn. I was surrounded by the sounds of medical equipment and the soft murmurs of the hospital staff. My body still aches, but it was much better than when I first woke up; it was a dull pain and a reminder that I made it alive, against all odds, I had survived and was given another chance in life. The room was private, with a large window letting in the morning sunlight. I moved my wheelchair closer to the window and stared at the view outside. I felt weak but more alive than I had in months. My first thoughts were my mother, my unborn child and of course, Zara, my supposed wife who is carrying my child.I left without telling them the truth so as not to get my mother scared or worried. Zara wouldn't care less if anything happened to me. I'm sure Ethan would have broken the news to them about my successful surgery. I had told the doctor to inform him about the outcome of

KAI'S POV "Where in hell is she?!" My fist banged against the table, and the occupants of the room flinched in reflex. Zara had just disappeared into thin air. My patience was literally running thin.Ethan rubbed his temples, just as frustrated as I was. "Kai, we will be doing everything that we can. But it's like she's just vanished into thin air.""That is not good enough!" I cracked, my temper flaring. "My wife's out there, pregnant with my child, and you're telling me there's no trace of her. No single lead?"Inside the room were her father, Mr Klein, and her sister Lena. Mr Klein was pale and continued to shift from one leg to the other, furrows of worry had leached color from his features. "Kai, we're just simply too worried," Mr Klein began with a quivering voice. "We can't do anything without more information. Who could have helped her runaway like this?""Serious? Maybe you'd better ask your daughter! Who knows what she's been doing behind my back?" "Kai, are you sure about this?" Ethan's voice was low, yet, from where we sat in my office, waiting for Lena to arrive, I felt the tautness in his tone.I nodded, not taking my eyes off the door. "She's the only lead we have. If Zara told anyone about her plan, it would be her sister."Ethan flopped back in his chair, expressionless. "I hope you are right. If she knows anything, though, she isn't going to make it easy.""She'll talk," I said, hardening my voice. "One way or another, she'll talk."Uneasy silence crawled minutes while my mind kept racing on and on. Security tapes kept running over in my head, the picture of Zara getting into that car with some mystery man, her image branded into my brain, and I flared up in a burning rage that just would not die. I had to know who'd helped her.Again, the silence was broken by someone else's knock on the door, and Ethan stood up to let her in. Lena walked in looking nervous; her eyes flitted from Ethan back to me, trying to be bold, tho

CHAPTER 10"Tell me where she is, Liam." My voice came out surprisingly flat. The air was tight with tension, taut, seeming as if the walls themselves were holding their breath.Liam is the son of my company's Legal advisor. I did my findings after seeing him in the CCTV footage and discovered that he was Zara's ex-boyfriend. It all made sense now. Liam's jaw was clenched tight as he looked up at me, but in his eyes, I could see the flicker of fear. He was trying to be brave, but I knew better. I could smell weakness, and I was going to use that weakness against him."Mr Adler, I don't know where she is," Liam persisted, shaking his voice. "She just wanted out, and I helped her. That is all."I was closer now, inches from his face. "You want me to believe that? You helped her get away from me, and now you think you can just feign ignorance? You know where she is, Liam. You know, and you're going to tell me.".Liam swallowed, his Adam's apple rising, then beginning to bob nervously.

Kai. He stood his ground. His big presence crowded the small room. His dark eyes sparked—anger, but also something else that I couldn't quite put my finger on. Maybe relief? Possession? Anger? But behind him, his men were holding the nurse and security guard without a move, effectively closing off any route of exit for them."Kai?" I tried whispering, so my voice would be soft, gentle, and quite unsure.A step closer, his eyes nailed into mine. "You think you can hide from me, Zara? You think I wouldn't find you?"My very blood went cold as something grasped onto each part of me in fear. This wasn't how this was supposed to happen. He wasn't supposed to find me."How… how did you find me?" I stuttered backwards until my back hit the wall. His lips twisted into something wicked. “Now. Did you think Liam's family would keep you from me? From your husband? No one can separate us, sweetheart."I balled my fists. Psycho to some semblance of bravery, at least. "I don't belong to you, Kai.

ZARA'S POV I sit beside Liam's bed; the smell of the hospital is sterile. Machines beep steadily, their monotony no longer a reassuring sound. The sallowness of Liam's skin has sucked that vital spark from his face. With every breath, his chest rose and fell weakly. I could never have believed it would turn this way, the ending part with him. First, he came into my life as that confident, charming friend, one who would even make me laugh when I wouldn't want to smile. But here we are; the fact that one moment of his bravery sealed it for all of us changes everything. The creaking door opens, and in comes Michael, quietly, his gaze working its way around the space before finally resting on me. A faint trace of a smile bursts across that worn face, housing so much of the love held for me. He closes in before laying a reassuring hand on my shoulder in silent support."How is he?" Michael said softly, his voice barely audible over a whisper.I shake my head. "He's hanging on, but not fo

ZARA'S POV I'm not quite sure how long has passed, even, since I sat here fisting the recording in my hand, every word uttered on that recording was mere evidence to substantiate this dreadful truth I had existed with all these years, couldn't change, prove, or even escape. Everything stands so different now, however-Kai is dead and, with my future at last within reach, so it is time for my father's name to be cleansed of the stains attached.I glance down at the file full of all evidence against him in front of me to bring Mr. Klein into the courtroom. It was finally over: the man who killed my mother and, the man who framed my father for a crime that he did not commit, was finally going to pay for his misdeeds.Behind me, footsteps echo, and turning, I see Michael standing in the doorway. His eyes are fatigued yet full of determination. He had been at each turn with me through my journey and now was down to the final move he and I would make."How are you holding up?" he asks softl

But still, he presses on: he wants me to forget Michael, learn to cope with this kind of life-the twisted reality-to be his wife every waking day."Zara," his voice floats into the room deep and insistent. Not anymore. The sound of his footsteps drew closer and I shrink further into the corner, knowing well how pathetic it sounded but quite beyond my control. ZARA'S POVI sat on my bed by the window, and the raindrops falling against the panes coursed down in rivulets without sound-a reflection of the void inside my soul. There lay my son, sleeping still peacefully on the bed, curled up into a small bundle, his steady breathing the only sound in my room. For an instant, at the sight of him, all was well again, but pretty soon my reality confronted me.A knock shattered the fragile silence."Ms Zara," Madam Tess's voice was indistinct from the other side. There was something odd in her tone, like hesitation, even fear.Slowly, I rose, quickening at the pulse. Opening the door, I found her standing there, clutching a folded piece of paper in her shaking hands."What is it?" I asked, a knot already forming in my stomach.It's. "Madam Zara, you have returned!" she exclaimed in a voice that shook.I gave her no thought, strode right past her, as if she had never been, never broke my stride, my headset with one thing on my mind and one only, my son.Where is he?" I demanded ice with growing venom while whirling back a few feet to see Kai with dancing dark eyes and relishing the success.“Sleeping," growled gruff and small with curving lips ending into a smirk. ZARA'S POVI sat at Hartmann's Enterprise, in my office, staring aimlessly at the screen of my computer. The numbers all seemed blurred together, the reports dim and far away. Seated beside the plaintiff's table, clutching the photo of my son tightly between my clasped hands, every beat of my heart seemed to feel this invisible vice squeezing tight. Across the room, Kai sat oozing smug confidence: the expensive suit, cool, calm demeanor molding him into every inch of the untouchable mogul he wanted the world to think he was."Ready?"
