At dawn, I woke up and dialed Luna’s number, still switched off. I went into the bathroom to freshen up. I returned to the bedroom, dressed up, and carried my traveling bag to the living room. I returned to the bedroom to take my phone and change my purse. I went back to the living room, did a silent prayer, and walked to the door. As I opened the door, I was dumbstruck. I let down my bag. Tears fell from my eyes. Luna was laid down with a bruised face, neck, arms, and a sign of a bullet shot in her thigh. I dropped down to my knees. I placed my head on her chest, she was still breathing. I gathered my strength and helped her to the bedroom. I didn’t know what gave me the courage to do all these, but I was grateful. The normal me will weep, fumble around her body, and never think. Thank God for the new me.

“I won’t let anything happen to you, I promise,” I assured amid tears. My new me will still cry but with reasoning. At least I knew I needed a doctor. I ran out of the house

***I yawned. Emiliano smiled. I was hungry. It was sunset already, no dinner yet.“Let’s go get dinner fixed then,” Emiliano said.I nodded. We headed inside. I carried Phoenix in my arms. When we reached inside, I put Phoenix down on the couch and followed Emiliano to the kitchen. I wanted to join him in fixing dinner tonight. I should become responsible too.“What can I help with?” I asked. He turned to me. “What can you do?” he smiled at me.“I can do many things,” I smiled back, moving to the countertop. I picked up the knife to cut the vegetables. I wonder when last I did that. Even with Luna, I don’t cut vegetables, she only allows me to do the dishes and then hands off. She will do everything else then I will help her to set the dining table. But I do know how to cook. Most times when Luna goes on a business travel, I do cook.“Be careful,” he said. I smiled. He set the pot on fire. We were going to make chicken casserole alongside ric

The following morning, I joyfully opened my eyes. I was expecting to see Emiliano still beside me on the bed. He was gone. I yawned tiredly. I needed more sleep, but not now. Where did Emiliano go? Maybe he went downstairs to prepare breakfast. I swung my feet to the floor. I went into the bathroom to freshen up. I returned to the room after some minutes and slid into a simple dress. I headed to the door. I opened the door and descended downstairs. I went directly to the kitchen, he wasn’t there, but breakfast was served. I looked around the living room for him. Maybe he was in the study room. I headed upstairs. I went into the study room, calling out his name, no response. He wasn’t inside the study room. I left for his room and checked the bathroom and every nook and cranny of the room. He must be outside, perhaps, in the yard. I descended the staircase once more. I went out to the yard, the swing was empty, and no one was in the yard. I checked the gazebo. I checked the garage then

I woke up on my bed. I sat up. My eyes darted around the room. I looked behind me. It was a dream. Who was the hoodie lady? She had two identities. One was the one in a red hoodie, and the other who came behind me was wearing a similar hoodie, but white. I saw neither of their faces. Why was she knocking? Who was she looking for? Why was she two? I stood up from the bed and faced the mirror. I looked at my reflection. How time flies. My days of loneliness were complimented by each beautiful moment I spent with Emiliano. God has blessed my shadowed life with a new light of a brighter future. Maybe it’s time I let the past die and face a new beginning. Maybe the two ladies were me. The one in red hasn’t forgotten the past just yet. She lingered in the past where nothing lies, but sorrow, and helplessness. The one in white could be me living my life in a peaceful future. Maybe she was urging me to stop chasing after the past and connect with a beautiful future. If that must be me, then

After the incident, Luna hardly left home. Her earlier fears continued. She wouldn’t tell me about it. What was she afraid of?“Luna? Can’t you tell me what troubles you? Why are you scared?” I asked one night after dinner.“I’m scared of not being able to take care of you as per Mother’s last wish. I feel inadequate right now,” she expressed.“Why would you feel that way? You are not inadequate, you are everything to me. I’m not complaining,” I assured her. “You don’t have to be scared of anything. We can handle any situation together. We will tough it out at any challenge we face. Just don’t give up, please.”“I’m glad you understand now. I will always be back for you, I promise,” Luna assured.“Stop saying you will come back, you are going nowhere. We will stick together,” I let out. She smiled.A few weeks on, Luna was back on her feet, hale and hearty. She started all over again. She ran from business to business, delivering her specialty and getti

“Luna?” I called.Luna was standing close to the road, she was going to cross. The distance was foggy. I grabbed her hand. She looked at me, she smiled sorrowfully. Her eyes glowed with tears.“I will be back,” she uttered.Tears streamed down my cheeks. Where was she going? Why was she leaving? Her hand slowly loosen from my grip. Even when I tried to hold on tight, her hand slipped from mine.“Don’t go,” I cried. She was being moved like the wind. My voice couldn’t be heard, it just died off immediately it escaped my lips. “Don’t go, please!’ I begged, but she never heard. She was swept away, across the road to the foggy distance.“No…!” I screamed, jerking up from the bed.Luna rushed in. “Are you okay?” she queried concerned. I sighed in relief. It was a dream, but it felt so real. “Are you fine?” Luna asked again, sitting beside me. I embraced her in tears. “Please, don’t go,” I cried.“It was just a dream. Calm down,” she pacified, fondling my hair. I disengaged the h

Two weeks later at night, I woke up to a hot temperature, yet I was shivering. I covered myself up with the duvet. My temperature burnt my skin so badly. I checked the time, it was half past midnight. I couldn’t go call Emiliano. I couldn’t even stand up to go take my phone from the vanity table. I was shaking vigorously. Tears leaked out from my eyes. I was fine before going to bed. What could be wrong? Do I have a fever? I couldn’t sleep anymore. The time was slow. It seems it has stopped ticking. I tossed and turn on the bed. I wish to fall asleep but sleep was far away from my eyes. I was freezing inside while my body burnt like fire. I tried calling Emiliano. I know he wouldn’t hear because I hardly heard myself. The tough night slowly died off. The sounds of early morning birds were heard. I didn’t sleep the whole night. Now that it was morning, I still couldn’t stand up. I was weak, burning, and freezing. I wish Emiliano comes soon. Just as I prayed, Emiliano walked in.“Food

I got to continue my story. I lay with Emiliano in his room the following day. It was weekend, so he didn’t go to work. We were both facing the ceiling. I wanted to continue my story. I had to, before the wedding.***After the death of Luna, my life turned upside down, dark and cold. Luna was buried in a cemetery. I couldn’t go home. I stayed with my sister. How can I leave her all alone in the cold? She was my everything. I can’t ever leave without her. I sat close to her grave. No more tears in my eyes. My eyeballs were red hot. I couldn’t open my eyes completely because of the sunrise. The sun shone softly on Luna’s grave. I still couldn’t believe Luna was under the earth. All the memories from my birthday were stuck in my head. Why didn’t I stop her? I should have forced her to stay with me.“Luna?” I called out, running into the woods. Where did Luna go? She was just here. “Luna?” I continued calling. I heard no response, just the symphony of the tree branches.

The face came out clear. My eyes bulged out. Tommaso? Tommaso was Luna’s college mate. He somehow saw me and Luna one day on the street. Luna warned me against him. He was part of a notorious gangster. She knew him so well in college. Jailed severally for vandalism, bailed, and continued. When I had gone to buy something from the next street, he approached me. He claimed to love him since the first day he saw me with Luna. I knew better than to accept him. I don’t think twice before replying to such an approach. I rejected him, politely as I could remember. Ever since then, he started stalking me. He follows me everywhere I go. On a faithful day, Luna had gone to the birthday party of one of her clients. She couldn’t pick me up from school that day. We had a long day practical that made me close late from college. As I trekked from where the bus stopped, Tommaso came along, dragging me to a corner. He stole a kiss from me. I struggled with him. He wanted to continue. He dragged me a

~Sienna~I woke up in the room, looking around like a lost child. Back to Emiliano’s place again. How long have I been gone? I stepped down from the bed and headed to the door. Just then, a knock came on the door. He stopped, his eyes turned to the door and the knock came up again. “Who is there?” he grunted. “Someone wants to see you, boss,” one of his men sounded from behind the door.“Who is it?” he queried.“He wouldn’t say his name, boss,” the man stated.“You stay here,” he groaned in my ear and went to the door. The moment he opened the door, he was pushed back, hitting his back against the wall and the knife fell from his hands. I turned my head to the door, Emiliano stood at the door, holding a handgun and aiming it at Mariano. The guard that was speaking fell dead. Maximo showed up. A smile flashed to my face, seeing my people come to defend me. I have never been defended before, this feels like a whole new beginning in my life.“Move it!” Emiliano ordered, aiming the gun straight at Mariano’s head. They indeed look super alike. I couldn’t find a distinction, except for the clothes they were putting on, or possibly the emotion in their eyes.

It has been a week since I started going out with Mariano. It’s becoming overwhelming, coupled with the fact that he desperately wishes to take me to bed. So frustrating. I can’t handle it anymore, it’s not okay mingling with my murderer. Time for the big show. I freshened up and dressed up in the most seductive dress I could lay my hands on. It was a sparkling deep blue short gown that seems to be hanging out my butt. I heated my hair to curl up and applied heavy makeup. I stepped into my high heels and stood up. I put a small knife into my purse.“Do or die again, Luna. This is your chance,” I reminded myself with a slight chuckle and headed out. I descended downstairs, taking each step with elegance like an awaiting queen. Emiliano’s eyes turned to me. He began staring at my transformation. Thank God Ginevra wasn’t there, I don’t wish to deal with jealousy before beginning my revenge today. I stepped down the last staircase and Emiliano swallowed hard. I raised one of my eyebrows.

I returned home, shuffling into the living room. Ginevra was pacing up and down, holding her phone. She stopped abruptly and hurried to me.“Are you fine?” she asked, holding me. I nodded and sighed. “Did you see him? Did you recognize him?” Ginevra queried.“No, we lost him,” I said and sighed, collapsing onto the couch. Ginevra sat with me.“How come?”Well, we waited patiently for him at the restaurant where he stopped. He didn’t come out till we fell asleep,” I explained.“Oh, that means you didn’t even get to talk to him at all, right?”“Exactly.”“Hey, you are back. How did it go?” Emiliano queried, handing a cup of tea to Ginevra.“We lost him,” I said simply and stood up. “We will try our luck next time. Getting to know his place is my priority right now,” I declared and started walking away. Emiliano held my wrist and I turned abruptly to face him.“I will help you…no matter what,” he assured. I nodded and headed upstairs. Ginevra stood up and moved close to Emiliano

Maximo accepted with a nod and carried Luna up. I followed him to Luna’s room and he laid her down.“What will happen now?” Maximo asked. “Huuuhhh!” I sighed heavily. “She will wake up. Please, stay with her,” I told him.“Uh, sure,” he accepted and sat down on the bed. I headed out. I opened the door and glanced back at them before going out. I went downstairs to meet Emiliano. He was seated on the couch in the living room, staring at the door. I sat beside him.“I’m sorry,” I said and he looked at me. “It’s…it’s just hard…I don’t know what to say, sweetheart, but I’m sorry. I believe you,” I apologized and he smiled.“You don’t have to apologize, sweetheart. I understand. Even though it hurts that you thought I was a murderer, it’s still fine,” he said and smiled. I snuggled closer to him, he held me and kissed my hair.“Do you think you…uh, you have a twin?” I asked, lifting my eyes to look at him. He paused, staring into space for a few seconds. “That’s it! It’s him, it’s Emiliano!” I groaned, turning away from the screen. “That scumbag!”“Emiliano?” Freda sounded and I looked at her. “But his name is Mariano,” Freda added and shrugged her shoulders at my confused stare.“His name is Mariano? “ I asked and she nodded.“At least that was what he told me,” Freda stated.I brought out my phone. I opened my camera to film the video. “Play it again,” I told Maximo. He replayed the video while I recorded it. “Thank you, Aldo,” I appreciated Aldo. He smiled. “Let’s go,” I told Freda and Maximo. We returned to the car.“What will happen now?” Maximo asked. “We will take her back home. Any silly move, I will get flowers for her funeral,” I told Maximo while intently intimidating Freda. Her heartbeat began heaving up and down again.“I will do anything you say,” she reassured.“Any smart move, don’t forget I’m still a reincarnated soul,” I added and she gasped. “Do you remember Luna?” I queried, interrogatingly staring deep into her eyes like the shaft of the sun over a deep blue ocean. She went as quiet as still water with only the sound of her heart banging her ribcage. She stared at me, confusion wearing off the weight of fear from her heart. “You remember her?” I asked again, relaxing against the chair, giving her room to rack her brain. She intently shook her head. “Well, let me tell you a story, maybe then you can remember,” I said and sat up. “About a year ago, you called Luna, a photographer, you wanted her to shoot at your fake wedding. She believed you and traveled down to Naples. On the night of her arrival, a villain, the man she feared most in her life stormed into her hotel room. Now guess who showed up when she tried to escape,” I narrated. Her chest began heaving up and down again. Beads of sweat formed on her forehead, clustered sweat rushing down her temple.“I…I…I…” she tried to speak, but no other words came out. I gave

~Ginevra~I sat with Emiliano in the living room. He was holding me close in comfort. Since the confrontation earlier, Luna hasn’t shown up. I wonder where she went. I clutched Emiliano’s shirt. I was shuddering from within. My breathing hitched. Luna wasn’t taking her calls. Did she leave like she wanted? I was scared to lose my sister again.“Calm down, sweetheart. You don’t have to worry, she must have gone out to clear her head,” Emiliano comforted.“But why isn’t she taking her calls?” I sobbed and sniffed.“She will be fine. If she doesn’t come back before 9 PM, I will go look for her, okay?” Emiliano soothed, patting my shoulder gently. I nodded against his chest. Then the door creaked open. Luna entered. I sprang up, flitting to the door. Emiliano stood up.“Where have you been?” I queried more like scolding, grabbing her hand. “I was worried, I thought you left,” I calmed my voice.“I’m sorry, I went to see a friend,” Luna said as we headed to Emiliano.“Who is that?” I asked

I couldn’t shoot him. I shot at the wall. I dropped to my knees in tears. Ginevra slowly removed her hands from her ears, carefully turning around to look at Emiliano. She looked back at me. She rushed down to me and wrapped her arms around my neck, crying.“Calm down, crescent moon, I understand how you feel,” Ginevra sobbed. I sniffed. I couldn’t shoot Emiliano because of Ginevra. I love her so much to do anything for her. How could I kill the father of her unborn baby? All the vengeance and pain accumulated in my heart and it hurts. It felt like a brick was thrown at my heart when I decided not to shoot him because of Ginevra. Emiliano shuffled to us. Ginevra held me up.“We can sort this out, Luna, I honestly didn’t kill you, believe me,” Emiliano soothed. I cast a glare at him. Ginevra held my hand tightly. “I have never killed anyone, Luna, never in my life,” Emiliano stated.“Believe him, Luna, he didn’t kill you, I can vow he didn’t,” Ginevra added.
