Warning Song

As she finishes her song, she watches her manager walk over, smiling slightly. His hands take the guitar and place it down as she looks at him, confused. The entertainment isn’t back, not that she can see anyway.

“Melinda, this young gentleman would like to dance. Can you take time out for the next song, please? I have someone setting up music.” Anais simply nods, not sure how to answer; she usually is not asked. Jamie, her manager, always asked Scarlett or Rosemary, sure again they were their fake names, but still, she felt happy and scared at the same time. She stands looking at the man. He is well-built. It is clear just from looking at him, even in his suit, you can see that.

His arm extends, his hand facing up. Anais gently places hers in his hand and walks to the dance floor, hoping the next song is not too slow or too fast. She is not the best dancer, which could be why she is never chosen. Getting to the dance floor, she stands, her awkwardness radiating from her as Bob Marley’s, Turn your lights down low starts.

“No need to be so nervous, just a dance, that is all.” He steps closer to her, his hands taking her wrists and placing her hands around his neck. He puts his hands on the small of her back as she begins to move her hips slowly. She can’t avoid how awkward this feels; her hair is standing up sharp like razor blades, the Goosebumps evident on her skin. Yet here she is dancing with him, wondering who the man is behind this mask, and for some reason, she wants him.

“You have the voice of an angel.” His voice radiates through her, seeping into her blood like honey.

“I doubt that, just a normal voice.” Her words mumbled as she struggles to believe him.

“Oh honey, believe me, I know what the voice of the angels sounds like, and you are it.” Anais nods, not wanting to get into it. If he says that, then she will leave him to believe it.

“So, why a waiter? These women are so much more elegant and stunning than us. Why do you always choose a waiter?” She realises her question could now get her into trouble. She should dance and talk to him. She should not ask personal questions.

“Melinda, isn’t it? You see, these women, they know exactly what they want, and there is very little room for negotiating. I love a woman who knows what she wants but not one that likes to take charge.” She nods at his response; she can’t believe that every woman likes to take charge and leave no room for negotiating.

They keep swaying to the song, Anais’s hips swaying more and more as she feels herself relax under his gaze, his scent drawing her further in. She finds herself biting her lip, unable to stop the wild thoughts within her mind. Why? She feels her head shaking, something about him is drawing her in, and it isn’t like that moment in a movie you see the woman saunter to the man who is the love interest. This feels different like there is something about him that draws her in. At the same time, though, it screams run.

“So, you asked me a question: what about you? Why would you just agree to dance with a complete stranger?” She considers it for a minute, there were many reasons, but tonight, she sang her own song in the hopes she was chosen, even if she hated the thought of singing it.

“The business relies on these clients. Should I refuse while they would not do anything malicious, it could mean other events would not be booked with us. To be honest, you don’t look so bad, so I don’t see you as a threat.” He nods, looking at her for the first time, taking her in entirely. Her body is fantastic, and that dress clings in all the right places.

He prefers her dress, simple black and clingy, to these women’s sparkly dresses that blinds a man when she walks under the lights.

“I am more than a threat Melinda; I will taint your innocence. Even just by dancing, I am doing that.” Her eyes gaze over him, catching his eyes. She knows he means it, yet all that does is make her want him more. Her thighs are pushing together as she realises her pleasure is showing just from his voice. His chuckle tells her he didn’t miss the sudden movement, the song finishing, and she goes to walk away, his hands keeping her close to him.

Lana Del Rey – ‘Video games’ starts, and her body freezes, the memories of many years ago flooding through her mind. She ran, and she regretted it ever since, yet she knew the man was trouble, and here she is, with another man warning her. Is the song a sign to her to run again or not to be a fool? She can’t afford to lose this job, so she stays dancing, her sudden change not going unmissed.
