"You're blocking the light."Jonathan scorned at me as if I were a little kid who intentionally annoys adults.
I stepped aside without saying anything.
Jonathan didnât look up, he didn't even bother to know how his words affected me. He kept signing document after document, his pen moving across the paper with his face bent low...his actions speaking volumes about how unimportant I am to him.
I pulled out my chair and sat down.
The breakfast Mrs. Hale, the housekeeper, prepared was still warm...Eggs, toast, and a small pot of tea on my side because she remembered that I didnât take coffee. At least she acknowledged my feelings. I reached for the cup and wrapped my hands around it, more for something to hold than anything else.
Jonathan turned a page...his fingers brushing the rough texture of the paper.
"You have a charity lunch today," I said. "Your assistant called yesterday to confirm."
"I know my schedule, Penelope. You don't have to remind me." His voice sounded like he was annoyed.
I was just reminding you..."
"...I didnât ask." He cuts sharply, his face etched with fury.
I took a sip of my tea and looked out the window; the city was lively. Cars moved below, and people moved from place to place.
"The accounts flagged an unusual transfer last week," Jonathan said, still not looking at me. "Did you use the household card for something personal again?"
"No."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, Jonathan. Iâm sure."
Finally, he looked at me but not for a good reason. He saw me as a problem he is struggling to solve. His dark brown eyes, moved over me with the same expression he probably used for poorly written contracts.
"The last time you said you were sure, I had to fix it. That was three years ago and yet here we are..."
I set my cup down. My fingers pressed flat against the table for a moment before I pulled them back into my lap.
"I didnât use the card," I said. "You can check it again."
He looked back down at his papers and nodded without saying a word.
This time around, I wasn't sure if I was to be relieved.
An hour passed like that and he was still signing. Meanwhile, the food was already cold.
I ate two bites of toast and he ate nothing. He never ate at the table. I wasnât sure why he sat there at all, except maybe to remind us both what this was all about...What we were. Which is...two people sharing a space and nothing else.
"The Mercer gala is next Saturday," I said.
"I know." He responded flatly
"Do you want me to confirm our attendance or..."
"I'll go alone." He muttered
I looked at him deeply. "Jonathan..."
"It's a business event." He stacked the papers and tapped the edges into a line. "You'll only complicate things."
"But..but I'm your wife."
He stopped tapping the papers. "Yes," he said slowly, as if reminding himself of something unpleasant. "You are."
I could feel my chest tighten, but my face remained calm. I had learned that in this house, you're to keep your face still and voice low in order not to give him anything to use against me.
"I didnât choose this any more than you did," I said.
"No." He stood, picked up his papers, and buttoned his jacket. "But at least I donât pretend itâs something it isnât."
He walked out of the dining room without pushing his chair in. I sat there staring at the cold eggs on my plate.
'At least I donât pretend...'
I wondered what he thought I was 'pretending?' That I was happy? That I was wanted? I had stopped pretending those things long before he married me. I stopped pretending the day he looked at me on our wedding morning and said, without a hint of warmth, "This is temporary."
Three years later, I was still here.
I didnât know what that made me.

That night, the house was quiet. Jonathan returned late and went straight to his separate room, and closed the door. I heard the lock click from upstairs. I always heard it every night.
I came downstairs past midnight to get water. The kitchen light was off, and I didnât turn it on. I liked the dark sometimes because it didnât ask anything of me.
I was passing his room when I heard his voice. His tone was deep and it sounded like he didn't want anyone to hear him. Maybe he knew I was going to eavesdrop because I certainly did.
I stopped walking to listen further.
"I know it's been a long time...I know." He said.
I pressed my back against the wall. The glass in my hand was cold against my palm.
"Just tell her to be patient." His voice dropped even lower, almost soft, softer than I had ever heard Jonathan speak to anyone. "When she comes back⊠everything will go back to how it should be."
My breath paused in my throat. 'When she comes back... who is she exactly?' I didnât move. I couldnât even if I tried to.
Because I had already realised, without a single doubt in my body, exactly who he was talking about.
And if I was right...
Everything I had quietly endured for three years was about to mean nothing, and that would determine my fate.
Beckyâs POVIt didnât take long for the cop to find the key and get the chain off my leg. I felt a little dizzy when I tried to stand, but aside from that I was fine. The officer insisted on taking me to the hospital even though I told them I was okay. All I needed was a bath. Phillip rode with me in the ambulance while Celine and Frank were handcuffed and taken away. The doctors agreed I was okay except for the bruise on my ankle, I was told they would keep me for twenty-four hours then I could go home.âI will call Sandra, and the rest to let them know you are okay,â Phillip said as he kissed me.âSure.âFinally, I was able to take a shower. I felt a lot better, but when I laid down, I couldnât help being furious about the whole thing. How could Frank do such a thing? He said he loved me, was kidnapping me a funny way of showing it?Sandra and Jenny arrived so quickly I wondered if they had been in the area. They hugged me tightly, laughing and crying.âThank God you are okay! What h
Phillipâs POVâFrank! What the hell! Is this a joke?â Rebecca asked.I just stared at him, too lost to find my voice.âDoes it look like a joke, Rebecca?â Frank sneered.âFrank, what are you doing?â I finally was able to mutter.âWe are working together. Are you surprised?â Celine asked.âWhat? So Dom is working for you?â Rebecca asked in astonishment.âSure. He has been my eye in the house from the day he was hired,â Frank smirked. âHis job was to keep an eye on everyone there.ââWhy?â I asked, stunned.âAre you asking, you idiot?â he laughed. âYou really think I like you? You are dumber than I thought.ââWe have been working together from the beginning. We knew each other before he introduced me to you, so it wasnât so hard to come along,â Celine grinned.âSo all the sabotage I have been having at the company, and the investors pulling out because of a false rumor, you were behind it?â I flared at Frank.âYes. And I also told Jessica to dump you. I told her you were having an affair
Phillipâs POVIt was quite late when I got to the beach. Throughout the drive I kept wondering if I was doing the right thing. The kidnapper had phoned me on my way down and asked me to meet him there. He had told me to turn off my handset, and leave it in the car, warning me not to try anything stupid. The way he spoke, I guessed he was somehow observing me. And on my way down I had a feeling that there was someone coming behind me. I pulled up in front of the rundown abandoned building on the edge of the beach that had once been a warehouse. I did everything I was told and stepped out of the car. The air was cold and damp. I could hear the waves and my heart raced as I walked towards the building. I touched an old wooden door and it opened. It was dark inside, but the moonlight streamed in. Everywhere was quiet.âHello!â I called out. The empty building echoed back at me.âAnyone here? Rebecca?ââPut your hands behind you!â A voice said quietly behind me.My heart skipped, but I o
Beckyâs POVâIt has been awhile hasnât it?â Celine sneered.âSo you are behind this? You are working with Dom! I guessed it.ââI am not the only one, stupid.â She laughed.âWho else? Your dad, right?ââYou donât need to know. Did you really think you and Phillip would get away with what you did to my family?ââWe didnât do anything!â I said angrily. âHe did. My dad lost his company and reputation because of him! Now it is time for payback.ââYou wonât get away with this, Celine!â âSave it! We already have. We are going to get money and get rid of you both.âI swallowed nervously.âWhat do you mean?â I demanded.âSimple, stupid. We are going to get ransom for you, then make sure you are never seen again. Are you scared?â She asked mockingly.âIt wonât work. Phillip has probably informed the security agencies. If you kill me, you will regret it,â I said bravely.âHe hasnât, and he wonât. Besides who said anything about killing you? Although I would have preferred that, my partner has
Phillipâs POVâI am really sorry about all this Phil. If I had known something like this would happen, I wouldnât have asked her to meet me,â Frank said feeling guilty as we left the hospital.âNo, I am sorry instead. It isnât your fault. I am just so mad that I didnât try to stop it,â I told him,
Beckyâs POVWhen I opened my eyes I was lying on a bed, but I knew immediately it wasnât my bed. So where could I be? Then the beeping sounds, smell of antiseptics, and seeing my bandaged arm when I tried lifting it, told me I was in a hospital. It took some minutes before I remembered what had br
Phillip's POVRebecca stared at me as if I had gone crazy.âWhat did you just say?â She asked me.âI said you are the new owner. Your Rich Electronics is all yours. I bought it for you,â I explained.âAre you serious?ââYes. The paperwork is all here. I promised you I would make sure the company wa
Beckyâs POVIt was an article about my dadâs company. It was facing bankruptcy and the company manager was hinting that it may soon be sold.âBecky, are you okay?â I heard Frank asking.I didnât answer, I couldnât. My mind immediately went to Davis. And I remember what Celine had said this morning.
