Zoey felt an undissolvable lump in her throat as she locked her red eyes with his. She demanded, "Who are you to question me? Why do you care about what I do?"

Laurence knew it wasn't the best time to provoke her, but she did seem visibly disturbed and incapable of rational thinking. He tried to restrain himself to no avail. Nevertheless, he kept his tone soft and gentle, "I'm not questioning you. You know very well the consequences of giving birth to a malformed child, don't you? You’re really going to let maternal love cloud your judgment?”

Zoey felt a chill run down her spine. The words might not seem like an interrogation to Laurence, but they sounded nothing but harsh to her. As they say, words spoken in anger cut deeper than a winter chill. She was already on edge, much like a taut bowstring stretched to its limit. She was unable to withstand any further pressure.
