Laurence pulled Zoey into a hug on his lap, their breaths hot on each other. She avoided his gaze, looking down while maintaining a calm expression. As her fingers clenched into a fist, she said indifferently in a faint voice, “I have never tormented you.”

Zoey felt wronged, as she lacked the power to torment him. Their marriage was only on paper and also represented a disparity in status. She was always the passive one. She had to do whatever Laurence wanted her to do.

Laurence gently caressed her cheek with his thumb. While distracted, he replied, “Probably not.”
