Two Hundred and fifteen

CHAPTER 215

Kevin refused to be invited to sit together to talk. He then put both hands in his pockets, and looked at Nicholas casually. With a deep sigh, Kevin spoke to Nicholas. "Detective, listen to me, I'm innocent and I have a discharge document and it's official from the police. You can find that information through your colleagues in prison." Nicholas didn't react. He was still pointing the gun at Kevin. "I will leave now."

"You can't run away!"

"I'm not running away, you can find me at home," Kevin said, then shrugged his shoulders indifferently. Kevin smiled and looked at Brittany as if she had no problem. "I came to this house because I wanted to talk to Brittany about the future. I think you two have a close relationship, so it doesn't matter if you end up knowing the situation."

Nicholas' brow furrowed. "What situation are you talking about?"

Kevin looked at Brittany, and with a widening smile, the man who had just graduated from a top university in New York City said, "You might want to ask Brittany about it. You probably wouldn't believe me if I told you."

Hearing that, Nicholas could do nothing. He was so curious that he turned his gaze toward Brittany. Brittany had lowered her hand that was holding the fork, she was no longer threatening Kevin with the silver object. She met Nicholas' gaze, then looked down in embarrassment. There was a sudden awkwardness that came over all of them.

Kevin and Nicholas looked at Brittany, both waiting for her response, but she chose to keep her mouth shut, not wanting to say anything more.

"Brittany, you don't have to be embarrassed to talk about it. It seems like you guys are close, this guy should know that I'm going to be a member of your family, right?"

"Never! Don't you dare dream like that!"

Nicholas lowered the gun from his hand, he looked at the two people before him in confusion. The look on his face was one of gloom and panic, he was really at a crossroads. There was no other choice, especially when Nicholas finally got the courage to speak.

"Brittany, what's going on here? What aren't you telling me?"

Nicholas' demanding tone made Brittany lift her face. Her body suddenly went limp as she was already intimidated. A loud clink echoed throughout the silent room as Brittany set the fork down on the table. Everyone looked at each other, and Brittany finally said, "I'm pregnant, Nick."

Like seeing lightning in the day, Nicholas was shocked by the news. He was speechless. He was frozen like a statue. This was news that he was not expecting.

The revelation hung heavy in the air, a palpable tension enveloping the room. Kevin continued to sit quietly, watching the drama unfold as Nicholas processed the unexpected bomb dropped by Brittany. The silence stretched on, broken only by the sound of a clock ticking in the distance.

Finally, Nicholas managed to shake off his initial shock, his eyes narrowing in disbelief. "Pregnant?" he blurted out, his voice a mixture of astonishment and confusion. "Brittany, is this true?"

Brittany nodded, her eyes avoiding direct contact with Nicholas. "Yes, Nick. I didn't plan for it to happen like this, but it did."

Nicholas turned his gaze back to Kevin, who was now smiling deviously. "Surprise, detective. Looks like your plan took an unexpected turn."

Nicholas clenched his jaw, torn between the revelation of Kevin's innocence and the fact that Kevin was about to become a father to the child in Brittany's belly. His gun, now forgotten in his hand, hung limp at his side.

"Detective, I can provide evidence of my innocence. The documents are legitimate, and I have been wrongfully accused," Kevin said calmly, taking the opportunity to shift the focus back to the problem.

Nicholas hesitated, torn between two conflicting situations. On the one hand, he had a man claiming innocence, armed with legitimate documents. On the other hand, the woman he cared for was pregnant with a child, news that literally made his head about to explode at any one time.

The room remained in an uncomfortable silence until Nicholas finally spoke, his voice strained. "Brittany, why didn't you tell me?"

Brittany bit her lip and she began to speak hesitantly, "I didn't want to go back to Kevin, he almost killed me. If you all find out that I'm pregnant, it will complicate everything."

Kevin laughed, he crossed his legs and looked at the two people before him like it was a fun show. "This is interesting. Very interesting. But you should know, Detective, I came because I want to be responsible for Brittany. I'm going to be with Brittany and our son. I want to make things right. I want everything to be okay. You don't have to worry."

Nicholas put the gun away, his expression a mixture of frustration and resignation. "We'll figure it out. But for now, we have more pressing matters to deal with."

Brittany cut in immediately. "I don't want to get involved with Kevin again! He'll kill me, Nick!"

Nicholas looked at the two people in front of him, they both had different and conflicting beliefs. Who should Nicholas believe now?

The room hung in suspended tension, each person wrestling with the weight of their own truths and lies. Nicholas felt the pressure of the conflicting stories, torn between justice and the safety of the woman he cared about.

"Kevin, your admission of innocence does not erase the past," Nicholas said, his voice firm. "But if you sincerely want to make amends, stay away from Brittany until we can resolve this matter."

Kevin nodded, there was a calculating glint in his eyes. "Fair enough, Detective. I'll cooperate fully. Just remember, I want what's best for Brittany and our child."

Nicholas turned his attention back to Brittany, his eyes searching for honesty. "Brittany, we need to know the whole truth. I can only protect you if I understand the situation."

Kevin held up a hand. "I think you two need to talk. I'm going to go now. Bye, Britt."
