CHAPTER 240
"Peter seems to be in shock about this, Nick." Noel watched Peter leave through the rearview mirror.
Nicholas turned the car around, he took another route to drop Noel off. While looking at Peter through the rearview mirror at his side, Nicholas mumbled in agreement. "Um, you're right. He's in shock. Is this the first time he's been betrayed? Has Peter never been betrayed by his first love?"
Noel laughed, then patted Nicholas on the shoulder. "You talk about women like you're a master of romance, huh? You're even dating a girl much younger than you now!"
"Hey, but we're both adults now!"
"Tsk, adults? You don't even know how to kiss, do you?"
Nicholas rolled his eyes lazily. "You think I'm a pervert? Alicia and I are committed to marriage, our relationship is deep and serious. We don't spend the night just for one-night stands. Ah, why do we have to discuss this? I'll drop you off and go home to meet Alicia. I promised her to take her on vacation, but I have to deal with all these problems."
Noel laughed again. "Cops like us don't have a day off. It sucks."
After Nicholas drove Noel to his house, Nicholas turned the car in the opposite direction. He intended to go to Alicia's flat to celebrate New Year's Eve together, after all, it was already outside of working hours, it was okay to take a short break to make their brains fresh again.
Knock! Knock! Knock!
The door opened and revealed Alicia standing with pancakes in her hands. "Hey, are you done? I thought you were going to slumber."
Nicholas shrugged his shoulders up. He then smiled and took the pancake from Alicia's hand. "I want to take you out to dinner to celebrate the new year. Would you like that?"
Alicia squinted, then saw her pancakes being eaten by Nicholas. "You ate my dinner, Nick."
"This?" Nicholas lifted the pancake in his hand, which was left over, and grinned mischievously. "Sorry, this probably means you have to eat dinner with me outside. Any restaurants you want to go to?"
"I don't know, I haven't thought of anything since this morning."
Nicholas rolled his eyes lazily, then swallowed the remaining pancake in his hand. Patting his hands together to clear them of cake flakes, Nicholas said, "You can shower and get ready. I'll be waiting in the living room."
"Okay. Do we have a dress code?"
"Ah, no. Just wear your best dress. Whatever you wear, everything suits you."
As Nicholas waited in the living room, Alicia appeared wearing an elegant scarlet dress that accentuated her features. Her eyes sparkled with a mixture of curiosity and excitement. Nicholas couldn't help but admire her, realizing how lucky he was to have Alicia in his life.
The evening unfolded with laughter and sharing of stories as they dined at a quaint little bistro. Nicholas, who is a storyteller, told stories of his adventures in the police force, while Alicia shared her dreams and aspirations. The atmosphere was light, and the connection between them deepened with each passing moment.
"I don't want to go straight home, how about a walk downtown? See the lights or fireworks?"
Alicia looked at the clock on her left hand, "But it's still too long to get to midnight, Nick."
"There's no such thing as 'too long' when I'm spending time with you."
After dinner, they took a stroll through the city streets decorated with festive lights. As they approached a park, Nicholas noticed a small crowd gathered around a street musician. His music tugged at their heartstrings, and wordlessly, they joined the crowd.
Unexpectedly, the street musician stopped playing, and Nicholas found himself pulled into the spotlight. Alicia's eyes widened as she took the guitar that was thrust at her reluctantly. With a shy smile, Nicholas strummed a few chords, surprising everyone with his hidden musical talent.
Alicia, mesmerized by this surprise, joined him in a spontaneous dance under the twinkling stars. The audience cheered, and for a moment, time seemed to stand still.
As the night wore on, they found themselves on a quiet rooftop overlooking the city. The skyline shimmered with a myriad of lights, mirroring the sparkle in Alicia's eyes. Nicholas reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.
Alicia gasped, not expecting what was about to be revealed. Nicholas opened the box and revealed a delicate necklace, with a shimmering jewel dangling from it. "Alicia, this is a symbol of us, the unexpected moments that make life beautiful. Will you be my dance partner forever?"
Alicia looked at Nicholas in confusion. "When did you buy this?"
"Actually, it was a gift from Emma. She wanted me to give it to you. But the timing was always off. I didn't find the best time for this, I'm sorry. I love you so much. I started to worry about all the murder puzzles, my mind was filled with my worries about Ace who was always after you. It's... it's getting suffocating."
Nicholas shed tears without realizing it. He felt his chest tighten for no reason. And seeing that, Alicia immediately accepted the gift from Nicholas and said, "I accept your offer, Nick. I will be your dance partner forever."
Nicholas' cry broke out, and Alicia hugged Nicholas there. The clock on Alicia's left hand was pointing to twelve, and the fireworks that were set off could be heard filling both of their ears.
It was a New Year's Eve atmosphere that was hard to put into words. All the emotions came together. And Nicholas, for the first time, could no longer stop himself from crying in front of Alicia. Alicia could only hug him, and let the new year bring them real new hopes.
Hope that all the cases will soon be solved and Nicholas can have a good love life with Alicia in the city.
"You'll be fine, Nick. We'll both be fine."
Nicholas tightened his embrace and they spent New Year's Eve together.
CHAPTER 241Alicia sat in a restaurant called Amore in her gray blazer and matching furry coat. A cup of hot chocolate was set before her, but Alicia still hadn't touched the chocolate-colored drink at all. Alicia checked the time on her left hand as she looked out the window. There was a large glass window beside her, so she chose the far end of the table. It had been five minutes since the waiter had placed the drinks, but the person Alicia was waiting for hadn't arrived. Alicia's heart started racing. She began to feel nervous and anxious. As she stirred her hot chocolate that was steaming on the surface, Alicia began to think of the words to say when she met her guest later. And after a few minutes, a familiar voice greeted her."Miss Alicia?"It was Felix, and a man dressed all in black was standing in front of Alicia's desk. Alicia looked up and smiled when their eyes met. Graciously, Alicia stood up and shook Felix's hand."Alicia, this is Christine. And Christine, as you heard
CHAPTER 242Christine tried to lift the corners of her lips, she smiled in front of Alicia to turn the previously sad atmosphere back into a relaxed and pleasant one. "At the company's internal meeting, you will meet with the board of directors, commissioners, important staff consisting of financial, managerial, marketing and other staff. The meeting is to announce that you will be the next CEO after the specific requirements given by Madam Michelle have been met. And, in fact, these people already know that I'll be the interim head while you're not in charge. Any decisions I make will always be discussed with you, and with Felix as the company's legal counsel.""Are any of them going to protest?"Felix chuckled. "Even if they have a lot of money, they can't buy the law. You will remain CEO, unless you get sick and write another will for the next CEO."Alicia's eyebrows knitted together. "What if I die?"Christine and Felix were silent. It was a very 'absurd' and terrifying question a
CHAPTER 243"Thank you for your time, I hope we can work together to improve Alpha Company in the future."Christine ended the conversation. They shook hands after enjoying lunch together. Alicia, who was still standing at her desk, watched Christine and Felix leave. They were getting farther away, and became invisible as they passed through the door. One hand reaching into her jacket pocket, she examined Anna Parker's business card and read it carefully. After a moment's thought, Alicia pulled out a cell phone from another pocket and called Nicholas. It took a few moments before Nicholas finally received the call."Nick! Where are you right now? Can we meet? There's something very urgent."[...]"Alright. Let's meet at Town Square, my location is quite close to that building. See you then."Since it was only a few minutes away from the restaurant, Alicia decided to run to Town Square. The place where she and Nicholas had promised to meet. Without waiting long, Alicia could see Nichol
CHAPTER 244Charlotte looked at the two people before her in confusion. She dropped the LV bag on her shoulder and placed it on the table. Smacking her lips, she picked up the phone on the corner of the table and started typing in numbers. But after waiting for a while, Charlotte put the phone back on the table and looked at Nicholas. Shrugging her shoulders, she said, "Sorry, Detective. But it looks like Anna has left the room. She's not picking up the phone." Charlotte picked up her bag again, slinging it over her shoulder. "I have to go home too, it's shift change time. You can talk to the next receptionist. She'll be here in five minutes.""Thank you for your information.""Sure. See you soon, Detective."Charlotte waltzed away in her usual coquettish fashion. And that made Alicia knit her forehead deeply. She watched Charlotte as she crossed her arms over her chest."Looks like you're close?" Alicia quipped.Nicholas laughed at that. He pinched Alicia's cheek and said, "Don't be
CHAPTER 245"So... Ace is not proven to have killed my parents?"Nicholas pursed his lips. It was a very difficult thing to say. He hated Ace so much. He wanted Ace to be involved in the murder of Alicia's parents so that Alicia would hate Ace too. But apparently, Ace did not kill Michelle and Edward. One of Alicia's hands moved to touch Nicholas' coat. She shook it slowly, and said, "Nicholas, please tell me what you know. It's about my parents' deaths."A sigh was heard from Nicholas. The man really couldn't be evasive anymore. "Ace was not involved in your parents' murder. Ace's nail samples don't match the DNA or fingerprints we found at your mother's house."Alicia's face wore an expression that Nicholas couldn't guess. Alicia arched an eyebrow, looking confused and disappointed, but Nicholas could find relief there. Did Alicia still have feelings for Ace? A man from the past?"You're... happy that Ace didn't kill your parents?"Nicholas' question made Alicia flinch. She frowned
Chapter 246"Chief Nicholas!"The voice broke Nicholas and Alicia's focus. Especially when they both found Hendrick waving and walking towards them. There was nothing Nicholas could do when Hendrick finally joined the same table as him. Nicholas had to act casual so that Hendrick wouldn't get suspicious."Hello, Alicia. You're here too. Are you guys on a date?"Alicia and Nicholas exchanged glances. Without saying anything, Alicia could tell right away that she had to keep her mouth shut. She had to keep her secret so Hendrick wouldn't get suspicious.Nicholas answered immediately. "We were hanging out around here, and decided to pay a visit to Fast Coffee." He looked at Alicia, giving her the code to nod her head. Alicia obeyed, she did Nicholas' covert request. "What are you doing in the office, Hendrick?""I'm just finishing up the report for Jason's case, the testimony from Mrs. Winchester yesterday will be included in the written report. That's a big clue."Nicholas nodded in agr
CHAPTER 247The field forensic team did a good job, the bodies of Jason's wife and two sons were removed from the coffin. All team members were fully dressed. They lifted the bodies out of the crates using latex gloves to avoid leaving any traces behind. The condition of the three of them was worse than Jason himself. Their bodies were hideous and the smell was unpleasant as soon as the crate was opened. After removing the decomposing bodies, the forensic team put them in body bags and they took them to the hospital.Because the smell was so foul, everyone was given masks by the field forensic team, including Nicholas and Noel. Nicholas and Noel went straight to Claire, she was the eyewitness, the one who first found the bodies."Excuse me, we are the police," Nicholas said, he then took out his ID card as a police officer, Claire nodded in understanding. "Is it true that you found the bodies near the waterfall?"Claire nodded. She was a short-haired woman, not much taller than Nichol
CHAPTER 248The forensic team discovered unsettling details about the victims. The bodies were strategically placed in the water, each positioned to form a cryptic symbol when viewed from above.Nicholas opened his personal notes, then looked at Noel. "You must have guessed that it was Jason's wife and children from the testimony of one of the witnesses at the pawn shop, right?""That's right. Those were the last clothes they wore before leaving the pawn shop, or the day before Jason was found dead," Noel continued. Before long, the forensic team was done with their work and met Nicholas to say goodbye. They would meet at the hospital for further investigation."Other than the last piece of clothing..." Noel picked up the bags of evidence, there was one plastic bag that caught Nicholas' attention. Noel picked up the same plastic bag, then took something out from inside. "There's an identity card in here.""The woman had an ID?" Nicholas looked at Noel in confusion.Noel shrugged. "You
