CHAPTER 28
Cafeteria- Golden High School.
"Didn't you make a mistake when you heard it, Britt?"
Brittany and Alicia were now sitting with the other students in the cafeteria. Just like the others, the two of them did not want to miss their lunch hour that day. The two of them sat in a corner of the cafeteria, as if they had marked the table as theirs beforehand.
Brittany stirred the spaghetti with lots of sauce and meat in front of her without interest. She just nodded weakly. "I heard it clearly, they're talking about you," she informed.
Alicia took a sip of her iced vanilla latte and muttered under her breath afterwards. "Do you know who was in there?"
Brittany shook her head. "For all I know, it's Ace's room." and shrugged her shoulders indifferently.
Then Alicia just flexed her forehead deeply. "Are you sure it's Ace?"
And all Brittany did was let out a long sigh. The blonde-haired girl then shifted her plate away, seemingly no longer having any appetite for the meaty meal. "I didn't say it was Ace. To be honest, I'm not sure either because his voice sounded like it was held back by something...," Brittany mumbled, trying to recall. "He sounded like he had a bad cold and you know, we always have different voices when we have a cold," she said at length.
Brittany stirred her vanilla latte before sipping the coffee over the rim of the cup. The black-brown liquid was no longer billowing steam as it had been left on the table for too long. "You'd better be careful with her," Brittany suggested.
Alicia chewed the noodle-based food in her mouth before asking, "Why is that?"
"I've noticed that Ace's emotions change a lot when he's with you. He gets warm, then turns cold as ice." Brittany concluded. "That's not who Ace is, it's like he's trying to be himself when he's not. But I'm not sure myself," she said convolutedly.
Alicia just rolled her eyes lazily and replied, "You're making my head spin, Britt."
The chubby-cheeked girl then snorted in amusement and got up from her chair. "Then finish your meal and help me finish Mr. Wilson's assignment," she concluded meaningfully.
Alicia frowned as she saw her best friend preparing to leave the cafeteria. "Are you really leaving me?" she asked curiously.
"I have to go back to my room and finish all those assignments. Like I said," she replied lazily. "I don't want my grades to drop again like last week or I'll end up living in this dorm with no money at all." Brittany turned her head lazily and let out a desperate sigh in front of Alicia. "My parents are so cruel, aren't they?"
And the ash-haired girl just chuckled amusedly. "But you haven't touched your food, Britt," she said. "I'm afraid you'll starve to death in your room in a few minutes."
Brittany sniggered. "Let's just say I'm on a diet. Ah, well, you'd better finish your food and go back to your room." She then turned around, facing the cafeteria exit. "I'll go first," she said as she left Alicia at her desk.
Brittany left the cafeteria because she had a bad appetite and it just so happened that the assignment from Golden High's CEO in history class was really worrying her. She hadn't done it at all and that would be the reason why her grades were low-like last week.
The main hallway was still bustling. With some students busy passing by there. While others, spent their time chatting in some corners of the hallway.
Nothing was out of the ordinary, until Brittany's cell phone suddenly vibrated and that meant a text message had just arrived in her mailbox.
Brittany quickly opened the message and found what she thought was an odd message. "It's a strange number," she said, staring at her phone screen.
Britt, I already know who it is. He's with me now in hallway 003. Get over here and help me! Remember, don't make any noise because I'm still on him. Make sure no one follows you. -Alicia.
"It's a foreign number, not Alicia's," he said suspiciously. He glanced around the main hallway and the people were still there, all busy of course. "I need to confirm this."
Brittany immediately looked up Alicia's number that she had saved in her cell phone and tried to call her. "Euh, why isn't her number active? I'm worried!" She tried a few more times with the same result.
Another message landed in Brittany's mailbox.
Sorry Britt, I forgot to tell you. I changed my cell phone number when I was detained at the police station yesterday. Get over here and you're in for a big surprise!
Brittany gripped her phone tightly and considered for a moment what to do. "I don't feel good, maybe I should call Nic." She monologued to herself, before finally calling Nic and telling him everything that had happened and asking him to come over.
An uneasy feeling came over Brittany at that moment. She tapped the edge of her phone furiously. Nicholas said he would see her soon, but waiting for him would take a long time. It might endanger Alicia up there.
And so the dilemma ended with Brittany's decision to run to the third floor (or hallway 003), to help Alicia. Aisle 003 or the third floor was reserved for students who had the first letters of the alphabet R through Z. And it had been decreed by the higher-ups two weeks ago (or to be precise, the day before Alicia's arrival and legalized the day after).
The hallway on the top floor of Golden High was deserted. There were absolutely no students passing by like the other hallways. Perhaps it was because all the students who owned rooms on floor 003 were enjoying their lunch hour in the cafeteria or the dormitory garden.
"Alicia," Brittany called cautiously.
Her feet stepped slowly, while her eyes watched every inch of the hallway warily. Lonely, that's how she felt at that moment. The fine hairs on Brittany's body suddenly bristled, as the girl remembered that she and Alicia were dealing with a murderer there.
"Where's Nic, I'm feeling terrible right now." Brittany called Nic several times, but there was no answer. "Maybe he's on his way here," she thought.
Brittany's cell phone suddenly vibrated. And she checked it as soon as she could. Instead of hearing back from Detective Nicholas, she received a message from Alicia's new number.
Go into Selena's room, I followed her this far and I've caught her. I need you to get her out of here.
Brittany's eyes rounded instantly. "Selena's room?" She immediately looked up and walked towards room 020 with Selena's name underneath. Upon arriving, her heart skipped a beat. She felt like something was wrong here. But she still dared to open the door knob which, as it turned out, was completely unlocked.
"Alicia?" Brittany entered Selena's room hesitantly.
She saw no one in the room but a gray-haired girl who was facing the large window (which led directly to the dormitory grounds) and her back. "Alicia, where is the culprit?" Brittany slowly walked up to the girl.
But the girl didn't respond. And Brittany's feelings were now starting to turn anxious. She cleared her throat, trying to stabilize her racing heart. Brittany was scared now.
"Alicia, why are you so quiet?" Brittany tried again.
Now the chubby-cheeked girl was right behind the ash-haired girl. Looking at her posture this close, Brittany was convinced that the person in front of her was indeed Alicia.
Without hesitation, Brittany grabbed Alicia's shoulders and was about to turn her around. But what happened next was...
.
.
.
"AAAAHHHHH!!!"
The girl grabbed both of Brittany's hands as hard as she could and pushed her senselessly out the window as she watched Brittany's body being thrown out... without any guilt, whatsoever.
CHAPTER 29 Cafeteria - Golden High School. Alicia moved her plate away. She had just finished her lunch in the cafeteria-alone. Because Brittany had chosen to go back to her room to struggle with the history assignment she had to submit it this afternoon to Mr. Wilson Blake rather than finish the meaty pasta. Believe me, the old man was demanding and strict, he didn't hesitate to report students with low grades to the parents and let them get their punishment. For whatever reason, since leaving the police station yesterday, Alicia felt like she needed to change-or maybe she already had. The Brooklyn-born girl now wears her hair in a ponytail, while a few strands are allowed to fall past her ears. Alicia's emotions also tend to be more sensitive these days. She has become more sensitive to her surroundings and this reminds her of the difficult times she has gone through in the past. Her stomach was filled to the brim with a portion of meaty pasta and a cold vanilla latte. But that w
CHAPTER 30Cafeteria - Golden High School."Are you sure?!"Ace and Alicia were still standing near their table--in the cafeteria--after Jake's hit-and-run incident. didn't know what had made him so rushed, but Ace had cursed him before the Golden High School basketball player left the cafeteria.Alicia fumbled through her pockets to find the smartphone. But to no avail. Alicia had lost her cell phone and it was strange. The last time the ash-haired girl had used her cell phone was when she walked with Brittany before lunch. After that, Alicia just kept it in her skirt pocket."I have a bad feeling." Alicia looked at Ace as she rubbed her ankle that had bumped into something--when Jake had bumped into her.Ace didn't react immediately, but her brown bead turned to Alicia's leg. "It looks like you hurt your leg," he wondered. Ace then bent down and touched Alicia's leg, rubbing it gently to make sure the girl wasn't badly hurt.Alicia, who was uncomfortable being too close to Ace, gasp
CHAPTER 31Golden High School, 12:40.Alicia's steps quickened as she passed through the stairs to the second floor (also known as hallway 002). She felt even worse after Nicholas told her everything. Everything Brittany had said on the phone about the other 'Alicia' who had sent her a message through a new number. The atmosphere, which had been quiet and monotonous, suddenly turned tense when those long legs managed to set foot on hallway 002.Alicia scrunched up her waist and grunted harshly. "Damn it! How many rooms are there on this floor?!"Determined to find her best friend, Alicia began walking through the closed rooms on the second floor. The blue-eyed girl opened them and called out Brittany's name to make sure. Occasionally Alicia had to break down some of the locked doors because their owners might still be in the cafeteria.Suddenly a voice from the dormitory speakers echoed loudly through the hallways. "Attention everyone! Our friend Brittany Scoots has disappeared after
CHAPTER 32Golden High School - public park."IT'S BRITTANY!" exclaimed Luke, amidst the crowd of gathered students. The commotion started a few minutes ago, after one of the students found Brittany hanging from the end of the second floor tile and she screamed hysterically afterwards. Other students and officials who heard the announcement of Brittany's disappearance immediately approached the location and formed a crowd to witness Brittany's fight for her life up there. The noise made by these panicked people caught the attention of Ace and Luke who were looking for Brittany in the parking lot (which happened to be close to where Brittany was found). The girl was found clinging to the end of the second-floor roof tile, which led directly to the dormitory's public garden."Shit! Why is she up there?! Hurry up and save her!" exclaimed Ace, to everyone around him.But their reactions only made Ace more confused and annoyed. How could those people not move from their places and instead
CHAPTER 33Golden Hospital, 19:00After finding Alicia's body lying unconscious on the floor, Nicholas immediately called an ambulance and took her to the emergency center at Golden Hospital. Fresh blood flowed from the seventeen-year-old girl's head on the way and several wounds--as if they were cuts--were visible on several parts of Alicia's arms. The white-dominated room was a silent witness to the existence of Nicholas who had been sitting waiting for the girl for the past few hours. The doctor had indeed confirmed that she would be fine after the attack. But just in case, Nicholas decided to wait for her until she woke up."Nic," Brittany called. The girl was sitting in a wheelchair with Luke pushing her from behind. Brittany was said to have suffered minor injuries and slight trauma from the incident. Of course her presence there made Nicholas gasp instantly. Meanwhile, Ace was seen trailing behind the two people."How are you, Britt?" asked Nicholas. And the chubby-cheeked girl
CHAPTE 34Golden High School, 09:50.The sound of the bathroom door knob being turned softly made Brittany, who had been sitting worriedly on her bed, turn around. She was waiting for Alicia, who had left a few moments ago to take a shower, but had not come out after an hour had passed."Alicia," Brittany murmured. The blonde-haired girl opened her mouth wide and didn't seem to blink for a while. That was until Alicia's finger snapped out of her reverie.Brittany let out a brief squeal before patting herself on both cheeks. "Oh my God, am I dreaming? Who is this girl in front of me?! Woohoo! Amazing! You look, you... Oh, my gosh, I almost stopped breathing," she said quickly. The excitement in the room was caused by Alicia's physical transformation. The Brooklyn-born girl had dyed her hair jet black and straightened it--with Brittany's straightening iron--so her face looked very defined now. Plus, she wears short bangs now.Her eyes had turned gray with soft lenses, while her eyebrows
CHAPTER 35"But why a date?"Brittany pushed her blond hair back, so Alicia could clearly see the diamond earrings in her ears swaying gently as they walked hand in hand towards the hall that morning.Alicia gave a quick shrug and replied, "I think the victims have something to do with Ace." Brittany immediately turned her head and gave her forehead a deep bend-- trying to recall the victims in order to agree with Alicia. "Or maybe the perpetrator is trying to frame him too," she continued."What do you mean?"Alicia leaned toward Brittany and looked seriously into her hazel eyes. "Do you remember, before someone tried to push you out the window, you told me that you heard someone calling in Ace's room?" Brittany nodded her head. "That means he was doing something in Ace's room. It could be a girl or a boy, let's call him or her what we think he or she is."The two of them then sat next to each other once they reached the hall. It happened to be history class that morning, where all t
CHAPTER 36New York City Police Department (NYPD) Headquarters, 1:00 pmThe young detective named Nicholas Gray looked up quickly when his coworker Hendrick Mckenzie--or Hendrick as he was more commonly known--tapped him on the shoulder. The hazel-eyed detective sat down in his chair--which was next to Nicholas' desk--and immediately handed Nicholas a dark brown folder. They had been in the same division (serious crimes division) for the past five years and their relationship had been very good. So it was natural for Nicholas to think of Hendrick as his own brother.Nicholas then enthusiastically accepted the folder Hendrick had given him. He had obviously been waiting for a lot of information from his colleague. "How is it?" and began to examine the sheets of paper inside carefully.Hendrick closed his mouth briefly. His eyes scanned the situation as he searched for the most appropriate words to explain everything to Nic at that moment. "This is very strange, Nic," he murmured hesita
