CHAPTER 79
Golden University, New York.
The wind that had been blowing through the oak trees around the university's garden seats was now beginning to break through the pores of Alicia's skin. The fair-skinned girl had been sitting there alone since her last class ended about an hour ago. Her blue, dim eyes were just staring ahead, though her mind was nowhere to be seen.
She took a deep breath and exhaled slowly as she closed her eyes. It had been a week since Mrs. Portman's passing from her life, but the grief was still there. So real.
Her relationship with Mrs. Portman was quick. She was a caring, nurturing lecturer who helped her with many things that Alicia couldn't figure out on her own. In just a short time, Alicia became like a sister to Mrs. Portman. And the woman's death has a bit of a psychological effect on Alicia, who has lost many times. If only she hadn't died. That's what Alicia had always regretted, until now.
As soon as she opened her eyes, Alicia was surprised by the leaf that fell on her thigh. She picked up the leaf and smiled bitterly. "Fall is coming soon."
And shortly after, a man in a short black shirt and jeans came and sat down next to Alicia. "I've been looking for you everywhere. Why are you here?"
Alicia turned to Ace who was now looking at her sadly. The man's face always succeeded in improving her bad mood. How much influence did Ace have on Alicia?
"I'm just recalling my memories with Mrs. Portman here, Ace," Alicia mumbled.
Ace let out a soft sigh, which Alicia probably didn't hear. He looked around before the man with dark brown eyes rubbed the top of Alicia's head gently. "Let's go. It's getting cold and it's not good for your health," he said.
Alicia agreed and the two of them left the park. Instead of forgetting, Alicia remembered Mrs. Portman's kindness in the garden. The girl always felt better every time she came to the park. She didn't feel the least bit lonely, as if she wasn't sitting there alone.
"Would you like some rib soup today?" Ace asked politely.
They had just reached the parking lot and quickly got into Ace's silver car to escape the cold. Fall had arrived and the weather was no longer as warm as usual.
"Sounds interesting," Alicia replied simply.
Ace then smiled with relief and hurriedly put the security belt on his girlfriend. "By the way, how was your class today? It's been a while since you told me about those little things, Alicia." After finishing, Ace returned to the steering wheel and prepared to hit the gas.
"Everything was good, I guess."
Ace then drove the car at standard speed towards a restaurant in Town Square and let Alicia sink into her own daydream.
Since replacing his father as CEO of the Golden group, Ace's already lavish lifestyle had become even more so. He often spent his money at five-star restaurants. Ordering several bottles of wine just to please him. And so it was that now, Ace parked his car in front of a classy European restaurant not far from the Town Square theater center.
"Are we going in?" Alicia asked in disbelief.
The last time she had gone out with Ace, they had only spent time at Uncle Chuck's simple ice cream shop. But now? The restaurant, which already looked sparkling from the outside, was displayed in front of Alicia.
"Of course." And Ace's strong arms immediately linked around the girl's shoulders. "Come on!" Leading the girl who wasn't much taller than him into a restaurant called Amore.
Amore itself was known as a luxurious restaurant for high-class guests in New York City. Even as Alicia and Ace stepped inside, their senses were immediately greeted by the sparkling chandeliers. The scent of fresh fruits entered their nostrils and evoked the fresh sensation that Amore itself wanted to give.
The twenty-year-old man then led Alicia to sit in a corner of the restaurant.
"You really intend to spend your father's money, don't you?" Alicia asked sarcastically.
But Ace didn't take offense at all. Instead, he smiled broadly and put on an innocent face to humor his girlfriend. "So Miss Perth, would you like to have such a delicious rib soup with me?"
Alicia chuckled. She then folded her arms across her chest and leaned her face towards Ace who was now sitting in front of her. "Sure, as long as you finish those caramels with me too, Mr. Blake," she teased.
Ace immediately shuddered lazily. He was even turning his head in disgust now. "Can you forget about those caramels and replace them with wine?" A wide grin appeared from the corner of Ace's lips;ending his offer just now.
"Not today, Ace."
"Ah..." Ace then spluttered. "Alright. I'll order now."
Afterward, Ace called the waitress to start ordering at the restaurant. Two servings of rib soup with their respective drinks.
"Ace?"
And the full-lipped man turned his head. "Yes, darling?"
Nervous, Alicia immediately bit her lip. "There's--there's something I want to ask you," she said slowly.
Meanwhile, Ace looked at her casually. He was even smiling now. "Just tell me. What's bothering you, Alicia?"
"Did you... on that day, really go to Italy?" Alicia immediately added before Ace could say anything. "I mean, I saw someone who looked a lot like you that day."
A second later, there was silence. Their eyes met, though neither of them opened their voices.
It was probably about a minute until Ace finally cleared his throat loudly and folded his arms across his chest. "Alicia, I...
"I didn't mean to be suspicious, I just... it bothered me a lot," Alicia cut in quickly. She even had an apologetic look on her face now.
"No," Ace snapped quickly. "It wasn't me." He said it in a flat, cold voice. Uncharacteristic of her.
But Ace didn't avoid the girl's gaze, he was staring at her intently now. "Now, it's my turn to ask you." Ace leaned forward. "What were you doing with Nicholas behind my back, Alicia?"
"Wha--what?!" []
CHAPTER 80Amore restaurant, New York."I..."The young man's dark brown eyes suddenly flashed sharply. They pierced the blue eyes of Alicia who could not move in front of him."What have you and Nicholas done, Alicia?" repeated Ace. He even raised his voice this time. "You met again, didn't you?""I--it's not what you think, Ace," Alicia denied. The only thing on her mind now was how Ace knew everything. Could Brittany have had the heart to report him? Or Ace had just hired someone to watch her while she was traveling."Tell me everything, Alicia," Ace said urgently.A sharp look came from those brown irises. Once again, Alicia was rendered helpless even by his gaze. Ace seemed even colder with the attitude he was showing now. It took Alicia's tongue just to explain everything. There was silence again. Especially after Alicia bowed her head guiltily. Without even expecting it, trembling began to spread throughout her body. Alicia felt very guilty for Ace."I always trusted you, Alici
CHAPTER 81New York City police station."You'll be very surprised at what I've found on the internet, Detective." Noel said.Nicholas was busy on the computer when Noel said that. The American turned around, looking at Noel with a curious expression. He pointed to the chair opposite and said, "You can sit there and tell me, Noel. What did you find?"Noel sat down as Nicholas requested. And the blond-haired man immediately handed Nicholas a piece of paper containing information, an article from an internet site. "The woman named Angela Vasylchenko is a British councillor who has a long career in New York, she is fifty years old now and has been living abroad since her treatment in New York was deemed a failure."Noel's explanation made Nicholas frown. He paid close attention to Noel's every word. He's looked serious."So, what about her medical records?" asked Nicholas as he scrutinized the sheets of paper on the table, examining them one by one. "Why did her treatment in New York fai
CHAPTER 82New York City police station."You have to accept the fact that the killer has been caught and I have nothing to do with this case. So, what else do you want, Detective?"Nicholas took a deep breath, then exhaled heavily. The man was wearing a long maroon shirt, black pants and a black coat as he sat in front of Ace.A piece of news startled Nicholas' fine morning. A man named Jill, suddenly came to the police station and confessed that he was a murderer. The murderer of the case that Nicholas was handling. And all these events are completely beyond Nicholas' prediction as a detective who handles cases. It just didn't make sense.Ace Blake was the first to see Nicholas as soon as the media broke the news. He gave Nicholas a dismissive look, giving him a look full of contempt to knock Nicholas down to the ground."You see? The murderer is now in front of your eyes."But Nicholas snorted in amusement. "Just because he confessed to everything, doesn't mean you're not involved
CHAPTER 83Alicia's flat, New York.Alicia was in her room pensively. She stares at the large window in front of her with annoyance. Her blue eyes were indeed watching the trees through the glass, but her soul wasn't really there.Alicia couldn't stop thinking about Ace's condition since he left the police station yesterday. After he left, Alicia had received no information about his current whereabouts.Despite trying to contact him several times, his cell phone was still inactive. Even Ace's social media accounts didn't show any signs of him being online.Where is Ace? What is he doing now?Worry, sadness and guilt were all feelings that were now raging inside Alicia's chest. At least if she could speak up to apologize, maybe her heart wouldn't be this tight. But how? Ace didn't even show any activity online.Ace seemed to be drowning; hiding deep in the earth.Suddenly, the cell phone that Alicia had been holding - because she was waiting for Ace's call - finally rang.Although it
CHAPTER 84New York City police station."None of the fingerprint samples matched the victim."Nicholas sighed and crossed his arms over his chest. His brown eyes searched the large man who was now sitting with his hands cuffed. In the small room, Nicholas was confronted by Jill - the perpetrator who had become the talk of the town - and Noel who accompanied her.Nicholas then threw the sheets of paper that Noel had just given him onto the table. "How come your fingerprints aren't there?" he asked sarcastically. "Are you a ghost or something?"But Jill chose to stay silent. The black-eyed man with the oriental face now looked down in surrender."Now answer my question correctly," Nicholas ordered. "Did you kill them all?"Which made Jill look up; staring at the detective with a cold expression. "I told you, I killed them all," he said in what sounded like a mumble. Then he dropped his head again, looking down at the worn brown shoes he was wearing."Why did you kill people you didn't
CHAPTER 85New York City police station."Jill would like to see you one more time, Detective."Noel's words in the final seconds before Jill's sentencing hearing began instantly broke the silence in the white-dominated room.Nicholas, the senior detective chosen by the chief to handle the serial murder case they called 'The Bloody Town Square' should have been able to breathe a sigh of relief. But the hanging truth that he got, actually made him totally uneasy now.How not, while investigating a complicated case, someone came and testified that he was the culprit. He was the one who killed the three victims with unclear motives and modus operandi."What's wrong?"But Noel shook her head. "He just asked me to call you, Detective," he said. "He also asked me not to come with you. It's like there's something he wants to say only with you."A short sigh escaped Nicholas' lips before he got up from his comfortable chair."Are you going to see him, Detective?" asked Noel worriedly.Which m
CHAPTER 86Ace's house, New York.Their eyes now met in a choking silence. Even though her cheeks were wet, Alicia didn't want to move to wipe them. She wanted the truth. She gathered all the guts she had lost and asked, "What do you mean, Ace?"Then the tall man sat down next to Alicia. Although the girl moved to take her distance in the end. "When I was bothering you in the cafeteria, do you remember that you said that my face reminded you of someone?"And the blue-eyed girl furrowed her brow in surprise."I was the one who wanted your parents dead, Alicia," Ace said slowly. "I approached you and found out information about them, then I let dad manipulate my brain. Because I thought that your parents would destroy mom and dad's business back then."Alicia was shocked, so she got up and exclaimed, "So, you killed them, huh?! You killed my parents!"Instead of shouting back, Ace calmed down and looked at his girlfriend regretfully. "It wasn't me. It was Dad. He was the one who prepare
CHAPTER 87New York City Courthouse."Can I hug you one last time, Alicia?"The blue eyes instantly turned dim. Her tears were unstoppable. And quickly, she opened her arms to immediately hug her boyfriend tightly. Tighter as if they didn't want to be separated right then and there.Ace Wilson Blake, had been sentenced to death for the planned murder of his seven victims with the evidence of the footage that Nicholas had."I don't regret what will happen to me today, because at least, I can feel loved before I die," Ace said softly. He then closed his eyes and smiled slightly in the girl's arms. "I'm sorry, Alicia."Louder sobs were finally heard. Alicia's tear-drenched face sank into the crook of the neck of the lover she loved so much."If only I had known I would love you this deeply, I wouldn't have done those stupid things in the past," Ace continued, which only made Alicia sadder. "Now we have to part ways.""Ace, I--""Sshh, take it easy, Alicia," Ace cut in, trying to calm her
