CHAPTER 7
The main hallway of Golden High School.
In life, aren't we supposed to accept all kinds of realities gracefully? Including the death of someone we love.
But James Portman's death is something different for a few reasons. First, he left under conditions that we all know, are very sad. Secondly, James' death happened on Alicia's first day as a new student at Golden High School. Third, how could Alicia's new friend, the one she met in the main hall, be related to the death that had just happened?
How could this series of scenes be so coincidental? Everything was interconnected as if it was a fate planned by God.
But, was all of this really just a coincidence?
Alicia stopped her steps and observed the police line that crossed in front of her. everything still felt the same as the day James was found dead. But the difference was that there was no blood and no corpse. Alicia's sense of smell picked up the scent of apples mixed with lemon from the floor cleaner used by the cleaners to remove the fishy odor. The smell of blood was so strong, Alicia was sure it would take a stronger-smelling antiseptic to mask it.
"The smell is disappearing," Alicia mumbled as she observed the surroundings.
The blue-eyed girl then thought for a moment where she stood, her head turning to the right and left, making sure there was no one but her in the main hallway, before finally letting out a heavy sigh with her hands linked at her waist.
"To hell with riddles! Why do I have to be stuck in this situation?"
Alicia reached into the pocket of her ripped jeans for her cell phone. She pressed a few buttons and opened the camera feature on the small device, taking photos of the surrounding area. Let's be honest, Alicia was a junior at Golden High School. And she was desperate to go to the scene of someone's death alone. If other people saw her there, a misunderstanding would surely happen. But Alicia reassured herself that everything would be fine.
Click! Click!
Alicia took a few pictures on her cell phone. She photographed several angles at the scene so that she wouldn't feel curious. James' death, which occurred on the day she arrived at Golden High School, raised a big question mark in her chest. Was this all a coincidence, or was James' death a clue that would take her back in time?
First, Alicia pointed the camera on her smartphone at the location where James' body was found, which was now protected by a police line. Alicia still gets goosebumps when she sees the location of James' death. The floor in front of her looked clean, the smell of blood had completely disappeared. But still, the horrific scene she had seen yesterday was still clearly recorded in her mind.
Secondly, Alicia moved away from the location where James was found and photographed the position of the CCTV camera in the corner of the hallway. As Brittany had said, the CCTV camera was too far away from where James' body was found. Even if the camera captured footage on the day of the incident, the killer of James would have been able to manipulate it with a hat or glasses. His identity would still be hidden because the distance was too far.
Alicia had zoomed in on the image, and what Brittany had said about the dust on the camera was also true. The CCTV cameras were useless. Golden High School should have provided more sophisticated devices considering it was an international school. But Alicia considered the security guards who were also on duty on the day James died.
James' killer must have known that the patrolling security would be inside the hall during the event and that's when he could have done it.
And thirdly, Alicia took a picture of the transparent door that was the dormitory's only entry and exit point. A single door led to two streets, the dormitory and the study hall. But there was only one hallway, so the killer must have passed this way to get in and out, and the last photo was of the turn in the hallway that led directly to hallway 001, the hallway containing the students' rooms on the first floor. Since it was in alphabetical order, it meant that not all the students stayed on the first floor.
Alicia lowered the hand holding the cell phone. Her blue eyes scanned the surroundings. The hallway was still quiet due to the school's warning. She was completely alone now.
Alicia's blue eyes then looked at the screen of the cell phone displaying her photos. She swiped the screen a few times until she ended up on the second photo, on the image of the CCTV camera in the corner of the hallway. She bit her lip and frowned. "Why do I have to get involved with all this again?" Alicia sighed silently. "Is all this really just a coincidence? There's no way that..."
But Alicia was wrong, she wasn't alone there.
"Alicia Perth?"
Someone suddenly called her name and surprised Alicia. Alicia panicked and almost dropped the cell phone in her hand if she didn't move quickly. She pressed the power button on her cell phone hurriedly, then put it into the pocket of her short skirt. Alicia then turned around, staring at the man now standing in front of her with a suspicious expression. "De-detective? I-"
Detective Nicholas crossed his arms over his chest, raised one eyebrow and looked at Alicia's face with a judgmental gaze. "You know that all students are forbidden to approach the scene until the investigation is complete. So, what are you doing here?"
"That, about that... I-"
Alicia's breath caught in her throat. Her saliva suddenly felt dry. Her heart was racing. Of all the people who had discovered her presence in the hallway, why did it have to be Nicholas? Why did it have to be a detective like Nicholas?
"I checked your profile and I finally figured out who you are. But, I still don't know why you seem to be so good at this." Nicholas stepped forward, approaching Alicia who was getting more and more nervous. Nicholas' brown eyes looked at Alicia straight on. "Who exactly are you, Alicia Perth? Do you know what's really going on here, Alicia?"
"I-"
"Tell me, who are you, Alicia?"
CHAPTER 8Alicia didn't know how long that handsome detective had been there, finding her like a squirrel caught stealing human food. Nicholas didn't call out immediately, just stayed behind her while observing. From day one, Alicia had caught his attention. But today, Nicholas felt even more curious about Alicia.Nicholas gave a small grin, then pointed at Alicia's hand that was hidden behind her body. "I know you're taking pictures."Alicia tried to act as normal as possible as Nicholas' eyes looked at her suspiciously. "I'm just taking pictures like the other students, it's for social media."Nicholas knew Alicia was lying. Alicia's expression said it all. But Nicholas chose not to discuss it and instead changed the subject. "I saw you talking to Ace in the main hall. That jerk didn't say anything bad, did he?"Alicia shook her head and closed her mouth tightly in defense. But when Nicholas diverted their conversation, Alicia already felt relief. At least she didn't have to answer
CHAPTER 9Golden High Hall room, 2:30 pm.It was like Alicia had no other choice but to follow Nicholas' request. After all, Nicholas was right about her curiosity about James' death. He wanted to know if all of this was a coincidence or if it all had something to do with Alicia's past."How did it go? You've made your choice, haven't you?"Alicia woke up from her reverie. She looked around, her hands rubbing her wrists awkwardly, before she finally said, "I don't have any other choice, do I?"Nicholas laughed softly. He nodded his head, agreeing with Alicia's words. Then, the man with the tall body pointed at Alicia. "But you won't be carelessly involved in the case. I'll be leading the case and you only have to make a move if I ask you to. Outside of that, you're not allowed to investigate separately. If it's an emergency, or it looks like you really need to investigate alone, you should call me."Nicholas' hand stretched forward."What?""Your cell phone. You need to keep my number
CHAPTER 10Nicholas took note of all her testimony and now looked up. His eyes meeting Elena's, the investigation continued. "May I know, when was the last time you saw James?"Elena frowned for a moment, she rubbed her forehead lightly and the emerald bead glanced to the right. "When I came back to the room, I saw him standing in front of Ace's room." she bit her lower lip hesitantly. "He seemed nervous and in a hurry. I thought so."Nicholas frowned, then looked at Alicia. Asking her to do something about Elena. And quickly, Alicia nodded;giving a code that Nic didn't really understand. But Alicia took over and spoke soon. She cleared her throat and asked,"Elena, did you use Azature nail polish for your nails?" Elena raised one eyebrow. She felt confused, then looked at Jake who was also looking at her with the same expression. But Alicia pointed at Elena's nails. "Those nails. You used that brand of nail polish I just mentioned, didn't you?"Everyone in the hall suddenly looked at
CHAPTER 11Golden High Cafeteria. The cafeteria was full and noisy as usual. At this time of the day, all the students would come to the cafeteria to receive the breakfast package provided by Golden High School. And the menu today was waffles, espresso and sandwiches. Most of the menu in the cafeteria was ordered by the students' parents, so Golden High School only adjusted the rest.Alicia and Brittany sat in the corner at breakfast time. All the seats are filled as the students don't want to miss out on their special breakfast menu. Normally, the school would provide vegetables and fruits to boost the students' nutrition. So waffles and coffee are today's favorites. The cafeteria tables are arranged as neatly as possible with four chairs each. A chandelier adorns the ceiling, providing light that is not too dazzling. The cafeteria door, made of transparent glass, witnessed the busy flow of students in and out of the cafeteria. They came and went, making the food counter keepers busi
CHAPTER 12Alicia, driven by curiosity, ventured to ask to switch seats with Luke."Oh, please." Luke said happily.Alicia sat next to Ace. She made Ace turn his head with a smile. Alicia's goal in switching seats was to eavesdrop on Elena's conversation behind her. She didn't even realize that the person sitting next to her was Ace. But Ace was already big-headed. He raised his face arrogantly, then whispered softly to Alicia. "Sorry Alicia, I'm no longer interested in you. You... I don't think you're my type."Alicia frowned deeply. What was this idiot talking about. Meanwhile, Ace grinned with satisfaction at the thought that he had succeeded in making Alicia feel humiliated."I heard you lost my hairpin." Elena's voice filled Alicia's ears. She ignored Ace who was still busy with his own thoughts. But now, Alicia wondered, who was Elena chatting with? Was it Amanda? Because the girl had her back to them. "You know how much those hairpins cost, right? You wouldn't even be able to b
CHAPTER 13Cafeteria room, 10:00 am.Everyone in the cafeteria immediately surrounded Elena's body which was now convulsing violently in front of the counter suddenly. Her pale face looked up to the ceiling in pain. Her hands squeezed her chest tightly and occasionally opened her mouth, seemingly to spit something out of her throat, though the only thing that came out of Elena's mouth was wind and a horrible hiss. She was like a person possessed by a ghost, her body moving uncontrollably.Elena's sudden fall caused the two friends beside her to panic. They both went low, trying to hold Elena's hands. They shouted in panic."Help! Someone help us!"And all the people in the cafeteria began to rush over. They were curious about the incident that had just happened. Some of them whispered in fear, while others recorded the incident with their cell phones. The current situation was almost similar to the situation when James' body was found in the hallway. But none of them could really help
CHAPTER 14Alicia sniffed the surface of Elena's paper cup. The sheer volume of coffee in the cup indicated how little Elena had drunk. Perhaps because it tasted a little different, Elena chose not to drink any more. The faint scent of almonds touched Alicia's sense of smell. Even though the coffee that Carl was holding tightly was no longer billowing hot steam."Did you have any almond-based food or drink today?" Alicia asked, without leaving her fingerprints on the cup.Carl shook his head slowly and put the paper cup back on the table. "No, no. We only have waffles and espresso because the other barista took the day off." He shrugged his shoulders indifferently. "You know, right, I'd have a really hard time making a lot of drinks for--" Carl paused, as Alicia again gave him a serious look. "Alright, I'll stop talking right now. I'm sorry," he said sarcastically.Alicia shook her head in disbelief. For the first time in her life, she had found a man who liked to talk more than the w
Chapter 15Golden High Hall room. After it was confirmed that Elena really died, Elena's body was then taken by police officers to the hospital for an autopsy process. This choice was taken because Elena's parents suspected that the cause of her death was considered unnatural and indicated a case of planned murder. Just like what happened to James. They had the same sad fate. At a very young age, they died terribly."We hope the police can solve this case as soon as possible, Mr. Blake," said Sophia, Elena's mother.Meanwhile, her husband, Jhon, embraced Sophia and tried to calm his wife gently. John looked at Mr. Wilson and said, "We're going to the hospital now."Mr. Wilson shook John's hand respectfully. "I'm very sorry for your daughter's death. I promise to assist you with the entire investigation.""Thank you," said John. He and his wife left the scene.Mr. Wilson spoke with Nicholas before the Golden Group CEO left the scene of the crime. He even avoided the students who were l
