CHAPTER 189
"Alicia!"
Ethan immediately ran to hug Alicia when she walked into Uncle Chuck's ice cream parlor. Everyone was still caught up in the complicated situation and Elden was standing guard there while waiting for all the commotion to die down.
Alicia patted Ethan's back, then stretched the distance between them. Smiling, Alicia said, "I'm fine. What about you, Ethan?"
Ethan shook his head, scratching his neck. "The situation is really bad. My head keeps spinning from being hit. But we're all worried about you."
Uncle Chuck approached, while Nicholas just stood behind Alicia without saying anything. Uncle Chuck looked Alicia up and down, then opened his voice. "Are you really okay? What did he do to you?"
Alicia bit her lip, everyone was now watching her, waiting for her to speak.
"I... he just took me, I'm fine, you guys shouldn't worry anymore," Alicia said, wanting to end the conversation.
Ethan then asked again. "Do you know the person who kidnapped you?
"Uhm, about that-" "We'll take responsibility,"
The voice came from Nicholas, he cut Alicia off. Nicholas looked at everyone and nodded his head, trying to be reassuring. "Since it's Christmas Eve, you should all go home. Elden has already taken your and Frank's testimonies, so we will focus on investigating this case at the police."
Everyone looked at each other, before finally agreeing and preparing to leave Uncle Chuck's shop. Nicholas helped Alicia, and the shop was closed.
"This was a bad experience," Alicia said, as she watched Ethan and Uncle Chuck leave with guilt. "I shouldn't have put them in danger, especially Uncle Chuck. He's old, this will harm him."
Nicholas tapped Alicia lightly on the shoulder, he saw that Alicia was almost crying on the spot. Her eyes were glazed over, she was masking her sadness with all her might. But Elden's voice broke the atmosphere.
"Excuse me, Chief!"
Nicholas and Alicia turned around, looking at Elden who was now smiling reluctantly at the two of them. Elden held up the journal in his hand and said, "I've written all the events in the book, should we go back to the police station now?"
"No, Elden. It's Christmas Eve," Nicholas said in a guilty tone. He glanced at Alicia, then continued for Elden. "You'd better go home, and so should you Noel. I'll see you tomorrow night."
Noel remained silent, giving no reaction. He wanted to agree, but felt uncomfortable with the situation. Noel also sympathized with Alicia, the girl had been through a lot. The man then left first, and Elden followed after saying goodbye.
"We're going home, OK?"
Alicia nodded, she knew she never celebrated the perfect one. This Christmas, however, had been very slow. Her parents died, she was kidnapped, she saw people murdered, could there be a worse Christmas than this one?
Nicholas then took Alicia in his car. But instead of driving home, Nicholas drove Alicia around New York City.
"What are you doing? Where are we going, Nick?"
After realizing that the car wasn't going to its actual destination, Alicia looked around. Nicholas just smiled while hiding his true destination. He had plans to take Alicia to buy a doll at a Christmas store, and they arrived at the store after a twenty-minute drive.
"Christmas... store?"
Nicholas nodded quickly. While unbuckling the seat belt on his chest, the man smiled and looked at Alicia beside him. "I want to buy you a present. Come on down, let's see if Santa Claus will give me something nice to give you through this store."
Alicia chuckled amusedly, she did not expect Nicholas to entertain her in this way. She took off her seat belt and walked hand in hand with Nicholas towards the store.
The Christmas shop was a festive wonderland, filled with colorful lights, ornaments, and the sweet smell of pine. Nicholas and Alicia walked down the aisles, marveling at the dazzling array of decorations and trinkets.
As they looked around, Alicia felt a warmth spread through her, replacing the lingering chill from the evening's events. Nicholas, who was usually calm and stoic, seemed particularly excited as he pointed out various items.
"Look at these ornaments, Alicia. They're like little works of art," Nicholas said, holding up a piece of glass jewelry that glittered under the shop lights.
Alicia smiled, grateful for the distraction. "You don't have to do this, Nick. I mean, with everything that's happened..."
Nicholas turned to her, his expression softening. "I know it's been a tough night. I just wanted to bring a little joy back into your life. After all, it is Christmas, and everyone deserves happiness."
They continued their journey through the store, Nicholas occasionally picking up unique items that caught his eye. A mischievous smile crossed his face as he held a Santa hat with flashing lights.
"What do you think, festive enough?" he teased.
Alicia laughed, her voice echoing throughout the store. "Of course it is. You should wear it to the police station. It might lighten the mood."
Nicholas raised his eyebrows. "Maybe I'll wear it. Anything that can make Elden smile."
They finally reached a corner full of dolls and puppets. Nicholas scanned the shelves until his eyes fell on a beautifully crafted porcelain doll. Its delicate features and intricate clothing made it stand out from the rest.
"This one," Nicholas said, showing the doll to Alicia. "It reminds me of you-strong and tough, but with a gentle touch."
Alicia was genuinely touched by the thoughtful gesture. "Thank you, Nick. This doll is beautiful."
Nicholas paid for the doll, and they left the shop, their hands still clasped together. The night air was crisp, and the city lights sparkled like stars in the dark sky.
"I know tonight is not the Christmas you expected, Alicia," Nicholas began, his tone sincere. "But I hope, even if only for a moment, it makes it a little better."
Alicia leaned against him, the porcelain doll in her arms. "That's right, Nick. Thank you for being there for me, for turning a nightmare into a moment of warmth."
Nicholas smiled, genuine warmth shining in his eyes. "Anytime, Alicia. Anytime."
CHAPTER 190The squeal of tires sounded loudly as the car driven by Ace entered the forest area. Still with his sweaty face, Ace held the steering wheel firmly. He winced when his foot hit the brake. While beating the edge of the steering wheel, Ace cursed."Damn it! Nicholas is an asshole!"Ace was furious. He grabbed his hair in frustration, then got out of his car. Slamming the car door, he yelled, "Arrrgh!!!"He spat on the snow-covered leaves, then his brown eyes darted around. There was nothing but big tall trees covered with snow. Since using Amanda's house as a basecamp, Ace had gotten used to the quiet atmosphere of the forest near Amanda's house. He left his car there, in the middle of the dark and silent forest, and went back to Amanda's house.Ace entered, then threw himself roughly onto the sofa. He comes close to getting Alicia, but Nicholas thwarts his plans. Ace intended to take Alicia out of the city, even planning to leave New York so they wouldn't have to deal with
CHAPTER 191"And, oh, this is good news. Let's forget about the mayor, he'll only comment if we succeed or fail. This is information found by Peter." Everyone was now looking at Peter, and Peter lifted his face proudly. Well, he was indeed a competent and passionate junior detective. "Peter, can you share that information with the people in this room?""Sure, Chief."Peter opened the journal on the table, and then looked at his colleagues in turn. "I looked into the murders of Jason and Jill, and it turns out they both had a similar pattern, killed and then dumped in the water. But what really connects the two of them? The answer is their children."Noel asked, "What happened to Jill and Jason's children? Jill's daughter died poisoned, while Jason's children have not been found until now."Peter nodded his head. "That's right. But as it turns out, Princess Jill and one of Jason's sons, have a congenital disease that requires them to be hospitalized in a pediatric hospital. It's a rare
CHAPTER 192Alicia stood in front of the city cemetery. She stood in a knee-length black dress with long sleeves, black ankle boots that reached her knees, and her black beret. The air wasn't as cold as before, but the wind that surrounded Alicia hit her pale face. Alicia took a deep breath, then exhaled heavily. Her eyes felt hot, water held in the corners of her blue eyes. The cemetery was quite quiet, with only a few people seen visiting their family graves there. Alicia felt there was no need to worry about that. After all, the day was still long, no one would dare to touch her during the day."Mom, how are you doing in there? Is it nice to celebrate Christmas from heaven?"Alicia spoke to the gravestone with Michelle's name on it. It was her mother's grave, next to Edward's. They were Alicia's adoptive parents who had taken care of her since the death of her previous parents. Alicia's journey with her family had not gone well. None of them ended up surviving. There was no happy e
CHAPTER 193"I think it was an accident." Uncle Chuck shrugged his shoulders, then looked at Alicia again. He continued with the words he was supposed to say to calm Alicia down. "You don't have to feel guilty. Who would have guessed that we would see a dead body in the river? It was a cold night, everyone really wouldn't have expected that. And about you being kidnapped, that was also an accident. Ethan was just hit, he's fine. Right, Ethan?"It wasn't a small blow, Ethan wanted to protest. But what he did was Ethan smiled reluctantly. He nodded his head, agreeing with Uncle Chuck's opinion to make Alicia comfortable. "I'm fine, my head is hard as a rock and you can hit it a few times.""That sounds like an exaggeration, Ethan," Alicia said, rolling her eyes lazily. Alicia crossed her arms over her chest, looking at the two men before her in turn. "But I'm serious about this. Last night, when I was kidnapped, he was my ex-boyfriend. His name is Ace, a police fugitive, he escaped from
CHAPTER 194"Alright, our meeting is over for today," Nicholas said.He smiled for a moment, perhaps too quickly for everyone to see. But Nicholas' thoughtful gesture was respected by everyone in the room."Thank you, you may back to your desks," Nicholas said, pointing at Peter. "Except for you, Peter. I want to ask for your report again and double-check it, so stay in, please."Everyone was confused, but after Peter nodded in agreement, everyone left the room.Peter got up from the chair he had been sitting in and moved near Nicholas. The young man was confused because he remembered that all these reports and information had already been given to Nicholas via email, so what else would Nicholas ask for?"Here are my reports-" "No need, Peter."Peter's eyes, adorned with square glasses, looked puzzled. He mumbled, then looked at the folder containing the report he had already emailed in confusion, then back at Nicholas. "I don't understand, Chief.""I want to ask you a favor," Nichola
CHAPTER 195Day turned to night, and Peter carefully observed Hendrick's every move. He follows him silently, blending into the bustle of the city. Tensions rise as Peter struggles to reconcile the coworkers he knows with the potential threat Nicholas has uncovered. One night, Hendrick receives a mysterious phone call. His voice was quiet, his eyes leering nervously. Peter, hidden in the shadows, strained to catch snatches of the conversation. Something was not right. The next day, Peter quietly reported the incident to Nicholas, who listened intently. "We must act carefully," Nicholas warned. "Keep following him, Peter. We're on the verge of something big."As Peter continues his reconnaissance, he discovers a secret meeting between Hendrick and a shadowy figure in a dimly lit hallway. The plot gets more complicated as they exchange secret packages. Peter, hidden in the shadows, takes photos as evidence. He sends it to Nicholas."What exactly are you hiding from the rest of us, Hendr
CHAPTER 196Chasing the night, Peter finally met up with Nicholas. Since the time on his watch was already ten, Nicholas decided to drop Peter off in his car."I'll take you home," Nicholas said. They then cut through the night city streets just to talk in the car."Hendrick went home first," Peter said to start the conversation. As Nicholas looked at the streets ahead, people were still out and about as they passed through the nightlife district. Nicholas' eyes scanned casually."What did you meet outside the office last night to talk about?""It was just small talk at first, Chief. Um, Hendrick asked about my activities outside of our investigation. It's about Jason, he might be suspicious that I'm working too hard." Peter nodded his head, "He probably suspects me of too much activity without involving him."Nicholas muttered, he turned the steering wheel to the right, then responded, "Does he suspect you of investigating more things?"Peter nodded his head, he rubbed his chin with
CHAPTER 197The waiting tone of the call Hendrick was making, finally stopped. Someone on the other call answered the call. In a hoarse voice, a familiar female voice answered Hendrick.[You received the package, didn't you?]Hendrick took a sip of the coffee in his cup, then sighed contentedly. Before finally speaking to the caller on the other side. "It's a nice gift. It must be expensive."[I bought it from a collector, you'll like it. But you know that the gift is just a bonus, right?"]The man with the mustache above his lips grinned, even though someone on the other side wouldn't be able to see Hendrick. Hendrick looked around, at the flower garden he had been tending for over two years now. It was Hendrick's backyard, a favorite place he would always love to be. "So, what exactly do you need?"[You seem to know Alicia well. The dark-haired girl who always sticks with Nicholas].Hendrick gave a long mumble, "I know. What do you want from her?"[I just got information from someon
