CHAPTER 196
Chasing the night, Peter finally met up with Nicholas. Since the time on his watch was already ten, Nicholas decided to drop Peter off in his car.
"I'll take you home," Nicholas said.
They then cut through the night city streets just to talk in the car.
"Hendrick went home first," Peter said to start the conversation.
As Nicholas looked at the streets ahead, people were still out and about as they passed through the nightlife district. Nicholas' eyes scanned casually.
"What did you meet outside the office last night to talk about?"
"It was just small talk at first, Chief. Um, Hendrick asked about my activities outside of our investigation. It's about Jason, he might be suspicious that I'm working too hard." Peter nodded his head, "He probably suspects me of too much activity without involving him."
Nicholas muttered, he turned the steering wheel to the right, then responded, "Does he suspect you of investigating more things?"
Peter nodded his head, he rubbed his chin with heavy consideration on his head. "He just wondered why I was investigating Jason's case alone, and he said that he had information."
Nicholas' eyebrows furrowed, he glanced at Peter who sat looking out the window beside him. "Did he share his information?"
"No, Hendrick said he needed more evidence to corroborate this information."
Nodding his head in agreement, Nicholas tried to understand Peter's words. He then remembered the picture message Peter had sent a few hours ago. "By the way, about the message you sent me, what exactly did he do?"
Peter turned his head, he also just remembered the discovery. "Ah, I had forgotten about that, Detective. I was watching Hendrick, and he met someone, a man with a fat body, um, the man wasn't taller than Hendrick, but he wasn't short either, I couldn't see him clearly because they met in the dimly lit passage under the bridge. Hendrick received a large box, but I can't be sure of the contents."
Nicholas pursed his lips, his eyes narrowed to look around. Nodding his head, the man pointed at the street ahead. "Is my house to the right or the left?"
"Take the right side, Detective. My house is at that turn," Peter told him.
"Okay." Nicholas followed Peter's directions, he took the right side and turned. There was a small road there, and Nicholas drove the car carefully. "We'll be there soon, right?"
"There, that's my house!"
After hearing Peter's announcement, Nicholas slammed on the brakes to slow down. He pulled over to the right side, stopping in front of a simple gray house.
"Would you like to stop by, Chief?"
Nicholas grinned, and nodded his assent. "No, thank you. You've worked hard, you should get some rest."
Peter adjusted his glasses, then smiled a little and nodded in agreement. "Yes, Chief."
"Thank you for your information. I'll be in touch if I need any more help. Until we find evidence on Hendrick, you must keep your mouth shut about this secret investigation."
Peter obediently followed Nicholas' orders. "I'm off, Chief. Thank you for escorting me."
Nicholas watched Peter leave until the young man completely disappeared from his sight and entered the house. This was the first time Nicholas had seen Peter's house since the few months Peter had been with the Major Crimes Division. It was a simple house, but in retrospect, Nicholas had never been to Hendrick's house. He had been looking into it and perhaps finding out the whereabouts of Hendrick's house would be his ultimate destination.
He then returned to Alicia's flat, they had decided to live together ever since Ace had attacked her. This was for safety.
Nicholas' car stopped, he looked around, and took his cell phone from inside his coat to check for messages from Peter. There was a picture message, Hendrick and a man shaking hands with a large box between them.
"What exactly are you doing behind my back, Hendrick?"
Knock! Knock! Knock!
The knocking sound on the car window was Alicia. Alicia waved and smiled.
Surprised by the knock on his car window, Nicholas quickly pocketed his cell phone, composed himself, and rolled down the window. Alicia greeted him with a warm smile.
"Nicholas, I just got back from the store. Do you need anything?" she asked, her eyes full of curiosity.
Nicholas shook his head, trying to hide the tension in his voice. "No, I'm fine. Just finished some work-related discussions with Peter. How was your day?"
Alicia leaned back in the car, her eyes watching Nicholas for a moment. "Fine, but I know something is bothering you. What's going on?"
Nicholas hesitated, debating whether he should tell Alicia. As he looked into Alicia's concerned eyes, he decided to open up a little. "It's just a matter of work, a complicated case. There's nothing for you to worry about."
Alicia nodded in understanding, although a glint of worry remained in her eyes. "Alright, if you say so. Just remember, I'm here if you want to talk about it."
Nicholas managed to smile gratefully, appreciating Alicia's support. "Thank you, Alicia. I'll keep that in mind. Now, let's go inside. It's been a long night."
They walked towards their apartment, the cool night air enveloping them. Inside, the soft glow of the lights created a cozy atmosphere. Nicholas couldn't shake the uneasiness of Peter's revelation about Hendrick and the mysterious encounter.
As they sat in the living room, Alicia spoke up, breaking the silence. "Nicholas, I've been thinking. Maybe we should plan a weekend getaway, just the two of us. It might help take your mind off work for a while."
Nicholas considered her suggestion, realizing that he needed a break from the intensifying investigation. "That sounds like a good idea, Alicia. I would love to see you excited about this. Let's plan something for next weekend."
As they discussed potential destinations and activities, Nicholas couldn't get the image of Hendrick and the mysterious man out of his mind. The weekend getaway had been a pleasant distraction, a chance to temporarily escape the clutches of the ongoing investigation.
Little did Nicholas know, the upcoming weekend would not only bring respite, but also unexpected twists that would challenge the very core of the case against him. The shadows of that night are far from over, and the web of intrigue is about to tighten even further, leaving Nicholas and Alicia caught in its intricate threads.
CHAPTER 197The waiting tone of the call Hendrick was making, finally stopped. Someone on the other call answered the call. In a hoarse voice, a familiar female voice answered Hendrick.[You received the package, didn't you?]Hendrick took a sip of the coffee in his cup, then sighed contentedly. Before finally speaking to the caller on the other side. "It's a nice gift. It must be expensive."[I bought it from a collector, you'll like it. But you know that the gift is just a bonus, right?"]The man with the mustache above his lips grinned, even though someone on the other side wouldn't be able to see Hendrick. Hendrick looked around, at the flower garden he had been tending for over two years now. It was Hendrick's backyard, a favorite place he would always love to be. "So, what exactly do you need?"[You seem to know Alicia well. The dark-haired girl who always sticks with Nicholas].Hendrick gave a long mumble, "I know. What do you want from her?"[I just got information from someon
CHAPTER 198Nicholas got up from the sofa and looked around. Alicia wasn't there, and quietly, Nicholas immediately looked for her in the kitchen. The girl was cooking soup, and as she tasted it, Alicia seemed to be enjoying herself."What are you doing, darling?"Alicia spit out the soup she was trying with a spoon, her tongue seemed to burn in surprise and she struggled in pain.Nicholas, who saw the incident, immediately ran over to Alicia and handed her a glass of water. "Drink this!"And Alicia drank the water given by Nicholas without comment. She drank it to relieve the burning sensation on the tip of her tongue. Alicia opened her mouth, putting her tongue out to be exposed to the cold air from outside."Are you okay?"Alicia nodded her head. "You shouldn't surprise me, Nick."But Nicholas frowned in confusion. He leaned his back against the table, then crossed his arms in front of his chest. One eyebrow raised, and he said, "What are you surprised about? Are you surprised that
CHAPTER 199"Ah, I made something too. You can wait here," Mrs. Thompson said, breaking the awkward silence between them.Alicia and Nicholas nodded politely, as Mrs. Thompson got up from the sofa and left them alone. The girl with the scarf around her neck then leaned forward and whispered to Nicholas. "Did you really double check everything, Nick?""Of course. I checked right away, but the people here said that they didn't notice the car. And well, as we know, we don't have the license plate, I had a hard time finding the owner without something detailed." Nicholas said that guiltily. "At least I apologized to Mrs. Thompson, right?"Before Alicia could answer, Mrs. Thompson returned with her son in a wheelchair. The young man looked much healthier now and could already sit up on his own. Mrs. Thompson pushed the wheelchair closer."My son is better, it's a miracle. And, I want you to say hello to him. It’s Erick."After Mrs. Thompson told him, the young man on the wheelchair waved,
CHAPTER 200"S-should we do this?" Selena glanced at Ace who was now sitting beside her.It had been an hour since Ace sat beside Selena, while the girl was immobilized behind the wheel of the car. They were silent, watching the dimly lit tunnel that Selena was familiar with. Ace held the gun in her hand, as if to emphasize that she would shoot Selena, if the girl dared to resist, or simply scream for help.Ace had changed a lot. The murders he committed in the past, had shaped his current personality. The man looked outside with sunglasses covering his eyes, so Selena couldn't be sure which direction Ace was actually looking. Selena didn't even dare to look over."Soon The Fixer's messenger will come, he will give me things and I will give him money," Selena said in a low voice, she was very depressed. But Ace was sitting casually beside her. Raising one eyebrow, Ace replied to Selena's words. "After you make the deal, I'll follow The Fixer's man, I'll make him take me to The Fixer."
CHAPTER 201The Fixer raised one hand in the air, then brushed off the shoulder of the messenger who stood protecting him from the front. "This is my guest. You can stop pointing a gun at him."The Fixer's messenger was a well-built man who was used to fighting. He had a dragon tattoo, and as it turned out, all men who worked for The Fixer would indeed have a dragon tattooed on their body as a condition of joining The Fixer. The Fixer laughed, he then took his cigar and said, "You can put your gun down now, Ace. My men won't shoot you."Ace thought for a moment before he slowly lowered the gun in his hand. Ace's brown eyes scanned in one motion, he saw that the base camp mentioned by Amanda was a warehouse filled with wooden boxes that Ace himself could not guess. He then looked at The Fixer again, who looked very relaxed in his large chair.Gray smoke filled the atmosphere between them due to The Fixer's cigar."What makes you dare to come to my place, Ace Blake?"Ace's eyebrows were
CHAPTER 202CHAPTER 202Ace leaves the warehouse that is The Fixer's second base camp. He had many hiding places to avoid the pursuit of the police and his enemies. The Fixer was the biggest informant in town. If someone wants to know something or get information, then that person must meet with The Fixer. He will give you answers to all your questions."Boss, are you okay?" The bodyguard named Matt immediately approached, he was the man with the dragon tattoo who was asked to step back by The Fixer. "He pulled a knife, it's very dangerous."But The Fixer looked relaxed. He put both hands in his pants pockets, then raised his face enthusiastically. Smiling broadly like the Joker, the underground informant replied to Matt by saying, "It's okay. It was a big surprise. I heard a lot of information. Do you think a million dollars would be enough for us to live on for a year?"Matt just shut up and looked down obediently without saying anything. He knew his boss was happy, and it would be
CHAPTER 203Selena looked in shock at the people lying lifeless before her. Her eyes would probably pop out of their sockets at the sight of so many corpses. Something in Selena's stomach couldn't be held back anymore, she was going to vomit!"HUEK!" The girl staggered backwards, before Selena finally managed to find a grip on the wall and brace her head that was spinning like a wheel. Selena looked at Ace in shock, this was a bad experience that was even worse than being bullied for years."W-what's just going on?"Selena's voice was probably too low for Ace who was being opened with something in the box. Selena's brown eyes scanned the surroundings. Bodies littered the floor, blood everywhere, none of them moving. Ace had literally killed them all in one fell swoop."What did you just do, Ace?"Ace finally noticed Selena's presence, he was too busy with Amanda's pile of cash. Ace searched the entire room and managed to find the m
CHAPTER 204Ace paused, looking at Selena. "I have my reasons, and let's just say this involves solving a personal problem. You, Selena, are my ticket to dismantling Amanda's web of deception."Their conversation was interrupted by the distant wail of sirens, signaling the arrival of the authorities. Time was running out, and Ace urged Selena to collect the money quickly. "We need to disappear before the law catches up with us. The Fixer won't be the only one looking for answers."As Selena stuffed the money into the bag, she couldn't help but feel a mixture of gratitude and uncertainty. Ace seemed like a complicated ally, but his words hinted at a common goal to escape the shadows of the past. With their bags filled, Ace and Selena walked towards the exit. Before leaving, Selena cast one last look at the mansion, now tainted by memories of betrayal and violence. The night promised a new beginning, but the journey ahead was fraught with uncertainty and the lingering shadows of their a
