CHAPTER 171
Nicholas handed Alicia a plastic sandwich when he arrived at the hospital. After leaving for about thirty minutes to stand in line, Nicholas finally arrived.
"It's not my favorite sandwich, but it's good. I got it across the hospital," Nicholas said trying to be honest. He smiled, then handed over the plastic once more. "You should eat, you've just seen something you shouldn't."
Alicia just looked up as she listened to all of Nicholas' words. The girl knew that Nicholas was trying to comfort her from the horrible incident she had just encountered. And it was only after a while that the girl reached out, accepting the sandwich in the plastic bag that Nicholas handed her.
"Thank you for the food."
Nicholas nodded in agreement, then sat down next to Alicia. They used the chairs in the corridor to rest, waiting for Ethan and Uncle Chuck until they could both testify to the discovery of the mysterious man's body in the river.
"Is Ethan awake? he looks in pain," said Nicholas, after he chewed the last of the food in his mouth.
Alicia opened the layer of paper that wrapped the sandwich. Then the girl nodded her head slowly. "I've checked on him and he's awake. But, he's still very weak. The nurse just gave him a drink and some medicine, he should be fine soon."
"What about Uncle Chuck? That old man is coming, isn't he?"
"Sure, Uncle Chuck is on his way."
They ate takeaway sandwiches with meat and vegetables. It didn't taste too bad compared to the flavorless hospital porridge. Alicia was already feeling better than she had a few hours earlier.
"I'm sorry that you had to get involved in someone else's death again," sighed Nicholas, feeling guilty for Alicia.
Alicia turned her head, watching Nicholas' face as he finished his sandwich. There was a look of disappointment and regret on his face, Alicia was quite aware of how embarrassed Nicholas was to have to involve Alicia in these cases again. "I was taking a walk in the countryside when I came across that corpse, Nick. Why do you think that it's your fault? We all accidentally found him there, after all... not all deaths are related to Ace, right?"
Nicholas made a long mumble, but did not nod his head. He crumpled the remaining plastic of his sandwich. His brown eyes then wandered around. Letting out a disgusted sigh, Nicholas muttered, "I'm getting sick of hearing Ace's name in my ear. It's starting to bother me."
Alicia's hand moved to touch the back of Nicholas' hand. It made Nicholas turn his head quickly. His attention was now focused on Alicia who was looking at him with concern. If he had to draw a picture of it, Nicholas would probably describe it as a sad, disappointed, tired look, all mixed together.
"You must be strong. This is a case that we must face together."
Hearing Alicia's words, Nicholas became embarrassed. He took Alicia's hand, grasped it regretfully and nodded his head slowly. They knew that the case they were facing was a serious one that was interconnected, they needed to find the center.
"Alicia!"
Alicia and Nicholas suddenly let go of their hands so as not to cause a misunderstanding, when Uncle Chuck ran over in the distance. Alicia stood up after throwing the plastic in her hand into a nearby trash can.
"Uncle Chuck?"
"How is Ethan, is he awake?" Uncle Chuck wanted to make sure.
Alicia nodded, she pointed towards the back and said, "He's still in bed, but the nurse just gave him some medicine. How about we go there and check on him again?"
"That's a good idea."
They then went to check on Ethan. Ethan was still in the emergency room and was getting treatment. The doctor said Ethan could go home soon, so there was no need to move him to the hospitalization room.
The room was not too crowded. There were only a few people who were also admitted next to Ethan's bed. Alicia, Uncle Chuck and Nicholas also surrounded Ethan who was now raising his bed.
"Are you okay, Ethan?" Uncle Chuck confirmed. He held up a brown plastic bag in his hand and shook it in the air. "I brought you some plain yogurt. I hear probiotics are good for your digestion."
"Thanks, Uncle," Ethan mumbled, he still looked very weak. However, Ethan's gaze fell on Nicholas. "Aren't you the policeman who came to see us earlier?"
"That's right. I've asked Alicia a lot of questions, but I need to confirm them with you two as well." Nicholas looked at Ethan, then at Uncle Chuck in turn. "Do you have any problem with that?"
Ethan nodded weakly, admitting Nicholas' presence. "No problem. We just need to finish this, so we can move on."
Nicholas took out a notebook and pen, ready to record the details. "I appreciate your cooperation. Now, let's go back to the beginning. Can you two explain what happened before you found the body in the river?"
Alicia, Uncle Chuck, and Ethan exchanged glances, gathering their thoughts before Ethan began to recount the events. As he spoke, the room seemed to fade away, and the three found themselves back at the ill-fated encounter near the riverbank.
"I should have taken them both home in the truck, but instead I stalled the truck by the river and made us all look at the man's body," Uncle Chuck said guiltily. He sighed, then looked at Nicholas. "This incident never happened before, Detective. It was a safe area, everyone knew each other because it was a rural area on the outskirts of the city."
"You mean... everyone knows their neighbors?" Nicholas confirmed.
"You're right. That's why the discovery of this corpse will definitely stir up the village." Uncle Chuck sighed in disappointment. He didn't expect something bad like this to happen. "I hope my factory doesn't have to close temporarily, since the factory and the river are quite close."
"As long as your factory is not involved in the case, I don't think you need to close it."
Uncle Chuck made a face, he raised his eyebrows. "I think I should talk to the people in the village."
Hearing that Uncle Chuck seemed to be very close to the people in the countryside, made Nicholas get an idea. He then squinted, then cleared his throat softly. "Uncle Chuck, can you help me talk to the people around there about the discovery of this corpse?"
"Sure. I'll help."
CHAPTER 172"But who is that dead man, Detective?"Ethan's voice made people look at him. He was still pale, but trying to look tough. Ethan's eyes, dull from having vomited several times, looked at Nicholas curiously.Nicholas took a deep breath, then let out a long sigh. "We will find out. We've been working on several murder cases lately, and it seems... the situation is becoming more and more serious."Uncle Chuck then interjected, "Are you saying that New York City is being terrorized by a horrific serial killer?"A bitter smile was drawn on Nicholas' lips. He didn't want everyone to panic, so the man in black tried to find the best words to explain. "The city is fine, the police will solve the case soon. You and the other citizens have nothing to worry about."Ethan tried to get up from his bed. He was much better although his stomach still felt like it was going to explode. Ethan's eyes were brown and haggard, and he looked at Nicholas curiously. "Are we going to the police sta
CHAPTER 173Nicholas and Alicia decide to return to the flat as they can't find anything until the autopsy is done. Noel was still at the scene with two other policemen. Nicholas took off his thick brown coat and hung it on the gallows near the entrance.Alicia sat on the sofa hugging herself. The night air made her bones ache even more. It was almost midnight when they finally got there and sat down together."Are you okay, Alicia?" Nicholas confirmed.Alicia massaged her head lightly, then looked at Nicholas next to her. "I'm fine, but that man's face is so unfamiliar. I've never seen him before.""We can think positively. Maybe he's not connected to Ace's case, or your parents' case." Nicholas put his arm around Alicia and hugged her. "You've thought about everything enough. It's been a hard day, you should go to bed, Alicia."The warm embrace made Alicia feel comfortable. Nicholas was all she had at the moment. Until this case was solved, Alicia felt that she would continue to dis
CHAPTER 174Nicholas and Noel sat in a coffee shop called Fast Coffee. It was a kind of mid-to-high-end shop, which served coffee as their main menu. The two men sat across from each other. Accompanied by a hot americano and macchiatto, Nicholas and Noel sat down to rest their minds."I don't know where to start," Noel said after taking a sip of his coffee, which was steaming hot from the surface. Noel bit her lip, then looked around. "Everyone's getting ready for Christmas, the two of us... oh, and the guys on our team, we're stuck with the death of a stranger. Do you think we can have gingerbread cookies and hot chocolate with melted marshmallows on Christmas, Nick?"Nicholas sighed. If Noel was bored, tired, dizzy, what about Nicholas? The man looked like he was going to explode. But all he said was, "My head is about to explode. I can't think of a Christmas present to give Alicia. My head is filled with dead strangers. Tragic. Terrible.""We can't focus on Ace if the murders keep
CHAPTER 175Noel hugged herself in the cold. It was the week before Christmas. Christmas ornaments dominated by red and green colors filled public spaces. Pine trees with colorful decorations and starlights are a sight that New Yorkers will often see.On the way to Jason's house, the body of the mysterious man is found in the river, Nicholas and Noel are lost in their own thoughts. Along the way, many people began to arrive at the accessory shops. They seemed to be busy looking for tools and gifts for Christmas, making Noel's heart who really wanted to experience Christmas a little sad.Noel's face showed his feelings very clearly.Nicholas slammed on the brakes after the maps on the phone screen indicated that they had arrived at the location."It's Hendrick!" Nicholas tapped Noel on the shoulder, he did it deliberately hard to make Noel forget about his 'dream Christmas'. "Get your focus back, we can think about Christmas after this case is over."Noel scowled at Nicholas, but Nicho
CHAPTER 176Hendrick suddenly interrupted. " By the way...we'd better go inside. The snow outside is getting heavier, it looks like a bigger snowfall is coming."Everyone agreed with Hendrick's words. Hendrick led the way inside. He opened the door of Jason's pawn shop, which was now covered in police tape. The four of them entered, filling the main door of Jason's pawn shop. There was only a banner that read Mr. Abraham's pawn shop. Abraham, a very Arabic name. A long table greeted the policemen, on which was a wooden sign that read 'closed' and when turned upside down, 'open'. That must have been the table used by Jason to serve his guests."According to people in the neighborhood, the pawn shop would open at nine in the morning and close at seven at night. There is a break from twelve to one in the afternoon." Peter explained everything, based on the notes he had written in his journal.Everyone looked at Peter, before finally scanning the surroundings with mixed feelings."Jason's
CHAPTER 177Noel examined the dangling rope. The rope was on the table, hanging freely showing its strong pattern. It was a dead knot, one that wouldn't break easily when your neck was in it. Wearing latex gloves, Noel felt the surface of the rope as it intertwined with each other, creating a truly solid knot."There is no resistance, this rope is clean. The victim must have hung here, died within minutes of suffocation," Noel concludes."We checked, and... we found no signs of resistance." Hendrick tapped Peter on the shoulder, then asked him to continue, "Peter you can continue our examination."Peter the bespectacled man immediately nodded his assent. After all, he couldn't refuse his superior's request, could he?"Through the luminol test, we found cleaned blood in the sink, on the rope, on the surface of the table, but all have been cleaned. Except for the blood on the table surface. It's still there.""Why was the other blood cleaned, while the blood on the table surface was not
CHAPTER 178Alicia walked into Uncle Chuck's ice cream parlor and made the bell at the entrance ring loudly. From where she was, Alicia could immediately see Ethan and Uncle Chuck sitting together at one of the tables. The two men immediately turned around, looking at Alicia who immediately went inside and approached Ethan and Uncle Chuck."Hey, what are you guys doing? Did I miss something?"Ethan chuckled, then shrugged his shoulders indifferently. "Uncle Chuck and I were talking about the dead guy we found last night. The situation is terrible. It's embarrassing!" Ethan held his own head, then shook his head in disbelief. "I hope I wasn't recorded by someone else. My face must be really ugly."Uncle Chuck tapped Ethan on the shoulder, he made a mocking face as he said, "I should have taken a picture of you. We can stick your pale, zombie-like face on the wall. The buyers will love it.""Are you mocking me, Uncle?"Alicia laughed at the ridiculous behavior of the two men before her.
