CHAPTER 181
Noel put his foot on the gas pedal after Nicholas finished buckling the seat belt around his chest. Meanwhile, Hendrick and Peter drove home in the same car. They both decided to leave after finishing their investigation at Jason's house.
Jason Abraham was an American-Arab pawn shop owner who was supposed to help Nicholas find Ace's whereabouts.
"We have all the evidence, it's premeditated murder and... unfortunately, it's also a serial killer."
Nicholas, who was sitting looking at the window, turned his head quickly. He frowned and asked, "Serial killer? How did you come to that conclusion?"
"Mr. Mr. Abraham was killed and thrown into the water, isn't the pattern the same with Jill? He was thrown into the water, between the beach and the river. Fresh water and salty water. We finally found the similarities, didn't we?"
Noel's words were true. They finally had a common pattern among the many murders that had occurred lately. Nicholas bit his lip, considering Noel's words in more detail. Nicholas pressed his tongue against his mouth, then said, "Aren't Jill and Jason the same age? They're both forty years old, aren't they?"
"And their names both start with the letter J!"
Nicholas' brow furrowed. He looked at Noel in surprise, before finally blurting out a question. "Would initials make you want to kill someone?"
Noel's laughter rang in Nicholas' ears, and he turned towards the police station. "I'm just guessing. It just so happens that their names start with the same letter, I thought it would help us find other similarities."
"But you're sounding too forceful, you know."
Noel pulled the car into the parking lot, where the police patrol cars were kept. He took off his seatbelt, as did Nicholas. They both got out of the car and immediately entered the office.
Inside, Hendrick and Peter had arrived first. That made Noel chuckle in amazement. "Wow, you arrived first. Are you guys speeding?"
Peter smiled shyly, then nodded. "I wanted to show off my skills a bit and I thought it would be good to get here faster."
Hendrick, who didn't seem happy that Peter was being so big-headed, pointed at Peter from his desk and said, "You know that speeding is dangerous, right? I let you because it's cold outside."
Nicholas brushed past the men and made his way to his private room. After a long time of always conducting investigations in the field, Nicholas was finally able to land his butt in that room. A new room, after his promotion to the top of the police force.
Not even fifteen minutes into Nicholas' rest, a knock on the door woke him up. The cold air really made him sleepy. But Nicholas alertly called out, "Yes? Please come in."
Peter entered cautiously. "Excuse me, Chief. I would like to give you the report of our investigation into the Jason Abraham case." The man handed him a piece of paper containing the report he had written himself. "I've copied it on my phone, so there's no need to wait long for a printout."
"This is great," Nicholas praised. He took the paper and started going through it. "Could you add a caption at the end, that Jason and Jill have the same murder pattern."
When Nicholas handed the paper back to Peter, Peter immediately took it. He was really quick and alert. "Yes, Chief."
"And, let's see if the two of them ever had a history of the same illness or if there was a hospital that brought them together."
Peter frowned and asked, "Why do you think Jason has a disease? He seems to be a healthy and fit man."
"They have children the same age, I just wanted to check," Nicholas said frankly. "And, oh, is Hendrick being nice to you?"
"Of course, Chief."
"I feel something is off about Hendrick. Do you think I'm wrong?"
Peter was silent. He mumbled for a long time, then said, "If you suspect anything, I'll help you to check."
"No need to do that. Just keep digging into Jason and Jill's background. If there is any connection, no matter how obscure, I want to know about it," Nicholas instructed, his eyes reflecting the intensity of the investigation.
As Peter left the room, Nicholas could not shake the feeling that there was more to this puzzle than met the eye. The eerie similarities in the murder patterns between Jason and Jill were more than just coincidence, and Nicholas was determined to uncover the truth.
Day turns to night as the investigation progresses. Peter delves deeper into the lives of Jason and Jill, uncovering a web of connections that go beyond the surface. Medical records reveal a shared history of a rare genetic disorder, a puzzle that brings Nicholas closer to understanding the motive behind the murders.
Peter, who manages to find the information, immediately writes it down in a note, it is an important discovery that will get him praised, or even promoted by Nicholas.
On the other hand, Nicholas was struggling with his own thoughts. He began to wonder who the person in the police department was who helped Ace escape when their prison had strong security. Hendrick was the officer guarding the prison that day, he didn't even know that an inmate was escaping from the prison. Should Nicholas be worried about Hendrick?
And Nicholas couldn't help but be curious. He called Hendrick into his room, making him sit across from him.
"Is something bothering you?"
"Um, well, I need you to recount the chronology of Ace's escape from prison."
Hendrick looked surprised. Both eyebrows rose reflexively. He mumbled for a long time, then began to speak in a slower tone compared to before.
"Um, that day... I checked the prison guards, one by one, everything seemed fine." Hendrick nodded his head slowly, then tried to continue. "The alarm went off and that's when I realized that Ace had left the outer layer of the prison building."
Nicholas' eyebrows furrowed deeply. "What? That's it?"
CHAPTER 182Nicholas frowned for a few moments. A question popped into his head. Why did he just realize that Hendrick's statement was too brief to explain the chronology of Ace's escape from prison? The man pulled back, Nicholas letting his back which was stiff from the workload lean back. The top of the chair in the leader's room was indeed different from his room when he was a detective. Nicholas' eyes shifted to another direction, he tried to avoid interacting with Hendrick and said, "well, you can leave this room."Hendrick's one eyebrow raised, he was taken aback. But finally, the big man got up from his chair anyway. He nodded politely, then said, "Sure, Chief."Hendrick walked out of Nicholas' room feeling confused. He stared at the door beside him for a while, wondering if perhaps Nicholas was keeping something from him. But Hendrick eventually kept walking, back to his desk. From inside, Nicholas could see Hendrick's movement away from his room. Nicholas' room had a sizable
CHAPTER 183"Why do you think Hendrick did that, Nick?"For the past half hour, Noel and Nicholas had been sitting in the car. They were enjoying the hot coffee they had bought at the Fast Coffee shop while they waited for the rain. They couldn't go back to the police station and look at Hendrick with suspicion on their faces. Noel and Nicholas both needed time to compose themselves, for what one of their colleagues in the division had done."Actually... I was going to quit field duty after solving the explosion at Alicia's parents' house."Not answering Noel's question, Noel pulled out her coffee cup, which was steaming hot. The heat from the coffee didn't last long as the air was so cold, they had to finish the caffeine quickly or else they would lose the thrill of enjoying real coffee. But this situation was too difficult to accept and Noel couldn't enjoy his coffee properly."But as we can see, this case is more complicated than what we know. There are big people involved in it, e
CHAPTER 184The sound of knocking on the door made Alicia, who was playing social media, look away. She looked at the round wall clock on the wall, it was one o'clock in the morning. Who was visiting so early? Alicia turned off her phone, trying to keep it in the pocket of her red pajamas. She eyed the door warily when the sound returned.Knock! Knock! Knock!Alicia tried to grab the pepper spray from the table, she had prepared it in case Ace came in unannounced. She then got up from the sofa and, pointing the pepper spray towards the front, made her way to the door.Alicia's hand was already on the doorknob, and she opened the door in front of her."Nick?"Alicia's tense face changed quickly. She breathed a sigh of relief and clutched her chest. "You almost surprised me, Nick." Alicia's blue eyes looked around, Nicholas had come alone. "Why are you here so early?"But Nicholas did not answer. His eyes were blank. His mind seemed to be occupied by something Alicia didn't know. Nichol
CHAPTER 185The noise from the house next to Alicia's flat made Alicia, who was asleep on the sofa, wake up. She blinked a few times, before waking up and seeing that Nicholas was asleep on the other side of the sofa. They were under the same blanket, but sleeping in different directions."You should understand!"The loud voice came from outside, Alicia recognized it as a familiar voice. It was Mrs. Thompson. Alicia raised her neck, trying to peer through the window. But the silhouette of the old woman was not clearly visible. Alicia then lowered her legs from the sofa, wanting to see who Mrs. Thompson was talking to.But that small movement managed to startle Nicholas. He had had a rough day and had not slept well. Nicholas woke up and looked around frantically. "What's wrong, Alicia?""Fuck you!"The voice outside made Alicia and Nicholas both round their eyes, especially because after the shout, they heard the sound of tires squealing. It was an impromptu brake. And other noises th
CHAPTER 186Nicholas wore a sweater over his white shirt. He wore it because it was supposed to be his day off. Tonight was Christmas Eve, Nicholas was supposed to be sitting with Emma and Alan, his parents, enjoying gingerbread cookies and other sweets with Alicia by his side. Instead, Nicholas was caught up in a case that he had no idea how to solve."Have you finished your shower?" asked Alicia, when Nicholas finally joined her in the living room.Alicia had showered first and was wearing a lilac sweater to cover her casual clothes. The girl was eating the salad she had made when Nicholas sat down beside her."I made you a salad.""Thank you," Nicholas said, pulling out a bowl of fresh cut leaves tossed with mayonnaise and mustard dressing. Nicholas started to eat his salad, then continued the conversation, "Is Mrs. Thompson much better?""Yes, I checked." Alicia chewed the remaining food in her mouth, then continued. "But I'm wondering who exactly was the owner of the black car th
CHAPTER 187Meanwhile, Ethan, who had been focused on managing the cash register, couldn't help but be drawn into the heartwarming scene. The sight of Alicia interacting with customers, spreading joy in the midst of a crowded store, made him appreciate the holiday spirit even more.As the little girl walked away with her ice cream, Uncle Chuck turned to Alicia. "You know, Alicia, this store has had its share of Christmases, but this one feels extraordinary. Your presence has added a touch of magic."The smile on Alicia's lips did not disappear, she tried to look cheerful in front of the shoppers. The shop closed early because it was Christmas Eve. Christmas ornaments had already filled Uncle Chuck's shop. Uncle Chuck wanted to celebrate Christmas with his family, so he came out of his kitchen with a box of caramelized bread and milk. While looking at Alicia and Ethan who were also ready to go home, Uncle Chuck said, "I forgot whether I put the rest of the ice cream in the freezer or n
CHAPTER 188After hearing the news from Noel, Nicholas left the hospital immediately. He hadn't even had time to check the information he had gotten from Peter and let Peter catch up from behind. Nicholas drove his car at high speed, not caring about the traffic lights showing red, and how crowded the vehicles were on Christmas Eve. Nicholas would overtake other vehicles, trying to get to Uncle Chuck's shop as quickly as possible. He didn't even care about the horns from other cars after successfully overtaking a few of them."What happened?!"Nicholas' voice instantly filled the room, all eyes now looking at Nicholas who walked over with a panicked expression. His face was covered in sweat, he was trying very hard to get to Uncle Chuck's shop quickly.Nicholas moistened his dry lips, then looked at Noel. "Noel, where's Alicia?" His eyes widened, he was really frantic about losing Alicia. Nicholas then realized that Ethan was still on the floor, Ethan was awake, but he looked dizzy. N
CHAPTER 189"Alicia!"Ethan immediately ran to hug Alicia when she walked into Uncle Chuck's ice cream parlor. Everyone was still caught up in the complicated situation and Elden was standing guard there while waiting for all the commotion to die down.Alicia patted Ethan's back, then stretched the distance between them. Smiling, Alicia said, "I'm fine. What about you, Ethan?"Ethan shook his head, scratching his neck. "The situation is really bad. My head keeps spinning from being hit. But we're all worried about you."Uncle Chuck approached, while Nicholas just stood behind Alicia without saying anything. Uncle Chuck looked Alicia up and down, then opened his voice. "Are you really okay? What did he do to you?"Alicia bit her lip, everyone was now watching her, waiting for her to speak."I... he just took me, I'm fine, you guys shouldn't worry anymore," Alicia said, wanting to end the conversation.Ethan then asked again. "Do you know the person who kidnapped you?"Uhm, about that-"
