Chapter 90
Prisons for serious crimes do have a more tense atmosphere when compared to prisons at other levels. As the perpetrator of a premeditated murder case, Ace was given a heavy sentence. Ace was placed in a special prison for serious criminals.
Ace's murder case had been going on since he was seventeen years old when he was attending Golden High School and living his life as a teenager.
Ace was now twenty years old. He missed his birthday yesterday, but Ace didn't care about that. Because all his thoughts were filled with Alicia.
Knock! Knock!
The sound came from the iron fist of a prison officer at work. The man hit the prison door to wake up the sleeping Ace. It had been three hundred and sixty-five days since Ace had been in the cell. He occupied a prison room with no luxurious amenities like the one in his flat.
"You have a guest."
Ace looked up, seeing a large man in his black uniform. The man's eyes were slanted like a Chinese descendant, but his body was large like the American race. "Who's visiting me this time?"
"You'd better see for yourself."
The prison guard was Mike. The man with the dragon tattooed on his big, muscular right arm. Without waiting for Ace's reply, Mike pulled out a key from his pants pocket. He opened the cell and backed up, making way for Ace.
Ace's tanned eyes saw the path before him. This was his first time receiving a visit. Deep in Ace's heart, the man really hoped that the person visiting him in prison was Alicia.
Ace stood up from the metal chair in the corner. He blinked his eyes, having just woken up from a sleep that lasted no more than three hours, before walking out of his cell. Ace had the privilege of status and money. This allowed him to occupy the cell alone, while other inmates were forced to live with three to four people in the same cell.
Mike walked behind Ace, as Ace looked over his shoulder. They walked to a room reserved for visitors.
The visiting hours were set. Every Monday through Friday. Other than family, relatives or lawyers, they were not allowed to enter. Prisons specializing in serious crimes do have tight security. Their security team is complete and structured. Inmates in this class are filled with criminals who have committed serious crimes such as murder, pedophiles, terrorism, large drug networks and the illegal weapons mafia.
Ace's steps stopped when the man's hazel eyes found a familiar figure ahead. He's speechless. His mouth seemed to freeze, his tongue suddenly unable to move like before.
Until Mike's heavy voice broke Ace's reverie there. "You only have five minutes to talk. I'll be back after your time is up."
And without waiting for Ace to answer Mike's words, the big man had already turned and left. He closed the door to the room, leaving Ace with a woman sitting in the center of the room. There were no guards accompanying them. This was quite strange and Ace realized that.
Ace swept his gaze across the room and found it quite strange that the woman who hadn't visited him in a long time had suddenly come. That woman was... Angela.
"How are you, Son? It's been a long time since we've seen each other."
Angela lowered the sunglasses that covered her brown eyes. The woman's eyes really looked like Ace's. Ace got the best eye genes from his mother and that was good. Angela grinned, then placed the sunglasses on the table.
"Are you going to just stand there and look at me with that unhappy expression of yours, Ace?"
Ace didn't answer. He closed his mouth tightly. He was still speechless, not knowing what to say since they had been separated for so long. It had been a long time. Ace had even almost forgotten about the mother figure who was supposed to stand by him in difficult times like this.
"What are you doing here?"
Angela raised both eyebrows, looking slightly surprised. Or, she was putting on an artificially surprised face. Ace couldn't see the difference.
The woman was good at hiding everything, including herself.
"You don't know why I'm here?" Angela let out a long sigh, then crossed her arms over her chest. Raising one eyebrow, she grinned and continued with her words. "I thought you'd have a lot of privilege with everything you have from your father. You really haven't learned much, Ace."
Ace let out a short breath. He didn't seem to like Angela's presence in front of him. But in the next second, Ace walked over. He sat on a chair directly opposite Angela, with a square table separating them. The room wasn't big, so Ace could smell the roses, orchids and Bougainville from his mother's perfume. It was an expensive perfume, Ace could guess from the distinctive and hard-to-find aroma.
His mother loved flowers. She even knew the names of flowers from all over the world, and represented her love of flowers in her own perfumes.
Angela was a councilor who loved flowers. Everyone knows that. But no matter how fragrant the flowers Angela carried on her body, Ace could only smell the falseness and betrayal that was already inherent in Angela.
"I got your punishment reduced, My Son. I thought it was better than seeing you on the gallows or seeing your body riddled with bullets," Angela said. She lifted her face haughtily. Her voice turned serious. "But of course none of that is free."
"I don't need your help."
"Really?" Angela was silent for a moment, she seemed to be considering. Before smiling and pulling out some photos of Alicia from inside her expensive Gucci bag. "You must be familiar with this face, right? The face that's probably been filling your head all this time."
"Don't involve Alicia in our business. She's already had a hard life."
Angela laughed mockingly. "Unfortunately, you're making me more interested in Alicia. How about I give you Alicia in return for our deal?"
"Stay away from her, or I'll kill you."
CHAPTER 91The booming laughter reflected satisfaction. Angela's loud laughter was full of insults for Ace who was sitting in his chair."What did you say, kill me? Hahaha, oops! Sorry, I underestimated you, didn't I?" Angela pretended to cover her mouth, then she lowered her hand. Tapping her long, polish-colored fingernails on the table, Angela said, "But 'kill' me sounds a bit much, Ace.""What do you want from me?" Ace looked at the pictures of Alicia again, especially the one Angela pointed to with the pointed tips of her nails. She had used silver nail polish, making them sparkle in the light above their heads. "I couldn't even do anything while I was in prison.""Persuade your father to give me all his shares. I need all of it to build a business in England."Ace snorted. He grinned sarcastically. His gaze turned sharp, like a criminal ready to prey on his next victim. "This is all for money?""I need your father's shares in England," Angela continued, becoming more serious as
CHAPTER 92Nicholas helped Emma put the dinner menu on the table. From roast chicken, pasta to salads made by Emma herself, everything was served on the table. It was like they were having a big event with that much food!Alicia sat beside Nicholas, observing how Nicholas and Emma had a very close relationship as son and mother. She smiled occasionally, feeling happy for the warmth that Nicholas' family created.Especially when Alan, Nicholas' father came and joined them.Alan and Emma talked a lot, inviting Alicia to join in the pleasant small talk. Nicholas' parents didn't discuss Alicia's past, or the things that offended her during their time together."You should try this, Alicia," Emma said, cutting off a piece of chicken breast and placing it on Alicia's plate. "Chicken breast is high in protein. It's very good for your body.""Okay, Emma. Thank you."Emma pointed at Nicholas who was sitting opposite her while squinting. "Nicholas really likes chicken breast, it makes his chest
CHAPTER 93Alicia tied a striped scarf around her neck. The wind in the late fall began to feel colder than other days. People started to change their clothes into warmer and thicker outfits. She turned around and picked up her gray backpack that she kept on the table. The taxi she had booked through an online app arrived and Alicia got in. Alicia checked the ID card of the driver and he was a forty-five-year-old man."We're going to Golden University, right?"And Alicia nodded her head. "Right."After traveling for more than thirty minutes, the taxi carrying Alicia arrived at her campus."Thank you."Alicia paid the bill and walked into the campus. From outside, the girl could immediately see gold and black balloons decorating the tall iron fence. People from the campus were celebrating their graduation. The more Alicia walked in, the more her blue eyes caught sight of people wearing their graduation robes and togas. It wasn't until she reached the end of the street that she found th
CHAPTER 94Brittany tapped Alicia on the shoulder. She realized something was wrong with her best friend. "What's wrong, Alicia? Are you uncomfortable? Are you seeing someone you know?"Alicia blinked. She gasped and immediately turned around. Smiling awkwardly, the girl opened her mouth. "I kind of saw-"But Alicia didn't finish her sentence. She considered talking about Ace in front of Kevin. They weren't very close, so Alicia felt reluctant to discuss it."Seeing who, Alicia?"Brittany scanned the surroundings. Of all the people huddled around, there was no one that Brittany was sure of. Alicia looked at Kevin for a moment, then turned to Brittany again and replied, "No, forget it. I just saw it wrong."Kevin then commented. "I want to take Brittany to lunch at a steakhouse. Would you like to join us, Alicia?"Brittany sulked, shaking Alicia's arm, which was wrapped in a long T-shirt. "You have to come, Alicia. It's to celebrate my graduation and Kevin's birthday."The man who was
CHAPTER 95"Born in Brooklyn, raised in San Antonia and moved to New York."Noel opened a file in a folder on the computer. Noel and Nicholas had been sitting in Noel's new office for the past thirty minutes. After being promoted to lead detective for the serious crimes division, Noel had received a set of perks from the New York City Police Department. Including a new room, new equipment, a new gun and of course a salary increase."Everything fits. Where did you get that information?"Nicholas returned Noel's gaze to him. The man with a thin beard that filled the area of his chin and firm jaw mumbled for quite a while. He nodded and said, "I managed to get the information from Alicia. She told me herself.""Did she say it, or did you provoke her?""I call it a 'big effort' that wasn't easy."Noel snorted, then shook her head in disbelief. "You could say that you tried to lure her into a date.""Damn, how do you know?""What don't I know about you, Nicholas Gray?" Noel shrugged, raisi
CHAPTER 96Brittany was checking her phone to upload some pictures of her graduation on Facebook and Instagram, when suddenly Kevin got into the car and sat behind the steering wheel."Oh my God, you scared me!"Brittany's loud voice made Kevin angry. He turned his head and frowned, glaring at Brittany. "You shouldn't talk that loud, Britt!"This was the first time Kevin had raised his voice in front of Brittany. And it took the blonde girl by surprise. Brittany had already booked a makeup artist for her special day. In secret, not only did Brittany want to look beautiful in her graduation toga, but she also wanted to please Kevin because it was his birthday. He was twenty-one years old now. He took accelerated classes in high school, and his achievements during his time at university made everyone proud. Especially Brittany. She was fascinated by Kevin's intelligence in science. Kevin was good at a lot of things related to chemistry and science. And Brittany felt that she would be be
CHAPTER 97It was a call from her parents in New York. And Alicia immediately took the call."Hello, Mom-" The voice on the other end made Alicia round her eyes in surprise. "Mom? Mom!"Without waiting long, Alicia quickly put the cell phone in her backpack on the table, and ran out of the house. While running in a hurry, she stopped a taxi on the side of the road. When the car stopped, Alicia jumped in and buckled up. She tapped the taxi driver on the shoulder and shouted, "We're going to Avenue Street now! Please hurry, my parents are in danger!""Yes, Miss," the taxi driver replied with an obedient nod.Alicia took her cell phone out of her backpack halfway through the ride and called Nicholas. Nicholas was the only person Alicia could think of in such an urgent situation, and lucky for her, he answered her call immediately."Hello, Nic?"[Hello, Alicia? Why are you calling me so early in the morning? There-]"My parents are in danger! There's been an explosion!"But the sound of N
CHAPTER 98In the midst of despair, Alicia heard a familiar voice enter her ears."Alicia!"Alicia's vision had begun to blur. Her breathing was labored. She was losing a lot of oxygen due to the smoke that filled the room. Her vision was only filled with gray. She struggled to open her eyes as her body fell to the floor, right next to her mother's body which was also lying there."Help!" Alicia's voice began to fade. She reached out, then muttered, "Please save us."Before Alicia completely lost consciousness.****After some time had passed, Nicholas removed the mask covering his face and entered the emergency room at the hospital. He walked over to Alicia who was lying there weakly, along with a senior doctor named Harris. Harris was a thin doctor who had a birthmark on his right hand, and Nicholas could see Harris' birthmark whenever the man was writing or using a tablet with his hand.Harris showed Nicholas Alicia's condition. "She had respiratory problems from breathing in too m
