CHAPTER 92
Nicholas helped Emma put the dinner menu on the table. From roast chicken, pasta to salads made by Emma herself, everything was served on the table. It was like they were having a big event with that much food!
Alicia sat beside Nicholas, observing how Nicholas and Emma had a very close relationship as son and mother. She smiled occasionally, feeling happy for the warmth that Nicholas' family created.
Especially when Alan, Nicholas' father came and joined them.
Alan and Emma talked a lot, inviting Alicia to join in the pleasant small talk. Nicholas' parents didn't discuss Alicia's past, or the things that offended her during their time together.
"You should try this, Alicia," Emma said, cutting off a piece of chicken breast and placing it on Alicia's plate. "Chicken breast is high in protein. It's very good for your body."
"Okay, Emma. Thank you."
Emma pointed at Nicholas who was sitting opposite her while squinting. "Nicholas really likes chicken breast, it makes his chest muscles develop well. You see that, right? He has a perfect chest, you will feel comfortable when you hug him."
"Mooooooom!" Nicholas sulked, he gave a short sigh and forbade Emma to talk about it. "Stop talking about my body. It's personal, Alicia will feel uncomfortable."
If only Nicholas could see his own face in the mirror, he would be so embarrassed. His face would be as red as a tomato. Emma was good at teasing her son. While Alan did not comment much, he only added things that he felt needed to be discussed.
Alicia interrupted, "It's okay, I know Emma's just teasing you, Nic."
"Tsk, you're very understanding, Alicia." Emma and Alicia laughed at Nicholas together.
The warm atmosphere of the house reminded Alicia of her past memories. Memories that were not completely gone from her head. Memories of love from a family that loved her.
Alicia's heart warmed. She was touched by the kindness and hospitality of Nicholas's parents towards her, even though it was the first time they had met.
"We'd love for you to come, Alicia," Emma said at the door. Alan put his arm around his wife, who was not much taller than him, and smiled with Emma. "It's like we have a daughter. Don't you, darling?"
Alan nodded in agreement. He pointed at Alicia, then snapped his fingers in the air. "We'll see you at the next dinner, Alicia. So, don't be shy."
Alicia looked at Emma, then at Alan in turn. She widened her smile and nodded her head. "Thank you for your kindness. I'm very happy to be able to enjoy a warm dinner with you."
Nicholas then approached Alicia. He turned around and raised his voice slightly. "I will take Alicia home. You guys can go to bed first, don't wait for me because I'm going to stay at the office."
Emma sighed sadly, while looking at Alan with a sad expression, Emma said, "Our child seems to have a new home, dear."
"Tsk, never mind, darling. Stop teasing Nic." Alan waved a hand, and smiled for both of them. "Be careful on the road. See you soon."
"Bye," Alicia replied, and walked after Nicholas who had already walked to his car.
The engine started and Nicholas drove the car to Alicia's flat. The streets of New York City always pleased Alicia. The lights of the city center, coupled with the night activities, made for a pleasant evening. Alicia didn't know that she could find happiness even in the darkness.
Even deep within that darkness... Alicia knew she would find her greatest fear.
"Your parents remind me of my parents, Nic."
Since Alicia started the conversation, Nicholas tried to look enthusiastic. He looked at Alicia, then muttered under his breath. "Really? I heard that you... live with foster parents, is that true?"
Alicia nodded her head, agreeing with Nicholas' question. She never answered questions that contained personal matters like this, but somehow, the atmosphere in Nicholas' house made her nostalgic for the past.
"I was born in Brooklyn, but my biological parents left me in an orphanage. I heard that they had economic problems that were difficult to overcome. Well, that was sad. Then I was adopted by a couple, I had foster parents who I considered my biological parents. Even if other people asked, I would answer that they were my real parents. They had a fast-growing business, I felt I was living with a harmonious family.
Everything was fine until... they had a single accident in San Antonio. It happened so fast and I was too young to understand. In San Antonio, the police recommended me to stay with Amanda's parents, but I finally found out who they were."
Nicholas turned the steering wheel to the right, he was looking for a slower road compared to the usual route just to listen to Alicia's story.
"They are a mafia gang. They were criminals, but I couldn't accept that fact. I tried to pretend I didn't know, living my life that I thought would be comfortable and better.
But unfortunately, they were killed by someone."
Nicholas swallowed saliva. Who could bear to listen to such a sad tale of the past?
Death, death, death. Who wouldn't want to vomit, imagining death always in front of us?
Alicia sighed heavily before continuing, "Since then, I've had foster parents living in New York. But since entering Golden High, they don't want their identities to be revealed. Only Mr. Blake and I know who they are. They paid more to keep their identities a secret. Maybe they know that whoever gets close to me... they will be in danger."
"Stop thinking like that, Alicia."
"But that's the truth, Nic."
"All those bad things only exist in your mind. They're not real, and you can create your own reality." Nicholas pointed at his own head. "It all starts here. From inside your own head. So, start thinking of good things from now on and don’t overthinking. Okay?"
CHAPTER 93Alicia tied a striped scarf around her neck. The wind in the late fall began to feel colder than other days. People started to change their clothes into warmer and thicker outfits. She turned around and picked up her gray backpack that she kept on the table. The taxi she had booked through an online app arrived and Alicia got in. Alicia checked the ID card of the driver and he was a forty-five-year-old man."We're going to Golden University, right?"And Alicia nodded her head. "Right."After traveling for more than thirty minutes, the taxi carrying Alicia arrived at her campus."Thank you."Alicia paid the bill and walked into the campus. From outside, the girl could immediately see gold and black balloons decorating the tall iron fence. People from the campus were celebrating their graduation. The more Alicia walked in, the more her blue eyes caught sight of people wearing their graduation robes and togas. It wasn't until she reached the end of the street that she found th
CHAPTER 94Brittany tapped Alicia on the shoulder. She realized something was wrong with her best friend. "What's wrong, Alicia? Are you uncomfortable? Are you seeing someone you know?"Alicia blinked. She gasped and immediately turned around. Smiling awkwardly, the girl opened her mouth. "I kind of saw-"But Alicia didn't finish her sentence. She considered talking about Ace in front of Kevin. They weren't very close, so Alicia felt reluctant to discuss it."Seeing who, Alicia?"Brittany scanned the surroundings. Of all the people huddled around, there was no one that Brittany was sure of. Alicia looked at Kevin for a moment, then turned to Brittany again and replied, "No, forget it. I just saw it wrong."Kevin then commented. "I want to take Brittany to lunch at a steakhouse. Would you like to join us, Alicia?"Brittany sulked, shaking Alicia's arm, which was wrapped in a long T-shirt. "You have to come, Alicia. It's to celebrate my graduation and Kevin's birthday."The man who was
CHAPTER 95"Born in Brooklyn, raised in San Antonia and moved to New York."Noel opened a file in a folder on the computer. Noel and Nicholas had been sitting in Noel's new office for the past thirty minutes. After being promoted to lead detective for the serious crimes division, Noel had received a set of perks from the New York City Police Department. Including a new room, new equipment, a new gun and of course a salary increase."Everything fits. Where did you get that information?"Nicholas returned Noel's gaze to him. The man with a thin beard that filled the area of his chin and firm jaw mumbled for quite a while. He nodded and said, "I managed to get the information from Alicia. She told me herself.""Did she say it, or did you provoke her?""I call it a 'big effort' that wasn't easy."Noel snorted, then shook her head in disbelief. "You could say that you tried to lure her into a date.""Damn, how do you know?""What don't I know about you, Nicholas Gray?" Noel shrugged, raisi
CHAPTER 96Brittany was checking her phone to upload some pictures of her graduation on Facebook and Instagram, when suddenly Kevin got into the car and sat behind the steering wheel."Oh my God, you scared me!"Brittany's loud voice made Kevin angry. He turned his head and frowned, glaring at Brittany. "You shouldn't talk that loud, Britt!"This was the first time Kevin had raised his voice in front of Brittany. And it took the blonde girl by surprise. Brittany had already booked a makeup artist for her special day. In secret, not only did Brittany want to look beautiful in her graduation toga, but she also wanted to please Kevin because it was his birthday. He was twenty-one years old now. He took accelerated classes in high school, and his achievements during his time at university made everyone proud. Especially Brittany. She was fascinated by Kevin's intelligence in science. Kevin was good at a lot of things related to chemistry and science. And Brittany felt that she would be be
CHAPTER 97It was a call from her parents in New York. And Alicia immediately took the call."Hello, Mom-" The voice on the other end made Alicia round her eyes in surprise. "Mom? Mom!"Without waiting long, Alicia quickly put the cell phone in her backpack on the table, and ran out of the house. While running in a hurry, she stopped a taxi on the side of the road. When the car stopped, Alicia jumped in and buckled up. She tapped the taxi driver on the shoulder and shouted, "We're going to Avenue Street now! Please hurry, my parents are in danger!""Yes, Miss," the taxi driver replied with an obedient nod.Alicia took her cell phone out of her backpack halfway through the ride and called Nicholas. Nicholas was the only person Alicia could think of in such an urgent situation, and lucky for her, he answered her call immediately."Hello, Nic?"[Hello, Alicia? Why are you calling me so early in the morning? There-]"My parents are in danger! There's been an explosion!"But the sound of N
CHAPTER 98In the midst of despair, Alicia heard a familiar voice enter her ears."Alicia!"Alicia's vision had begun to blur. Her breathing was labored. She was losing a lot of oxygen due to the smoke that filled the room. Her vision was only filled with gray. She struggled to open her eyes as her body fell to the floor, right next to her mother's body which was also lying there."Help!" Alicia's voice began to fade. She reached out, then muttered, "Please save us."Before Alicia completely lost consciousness.****After some time had passed, Nicholas removed the mask covering his face and entered the emergency room at the hospital. He walked over to Alicia who was lying there weakly, along with a senior doctor named Harris. Harris was a thin doctor who had a birthmark on his right hand, and Nicholas could see Harris' birthmark whenever the man was writing or using a tablet with his hand.Harris showed Nicholas Alicia's condition. "She had respiratory problems from breathing in too m
CHAPTER 99Alicia fell over after seeing her parents' bodies covered in cloth in the hospital morgue. The autopsy had been completed and Michelle and Edward's body parts had been sewn back together and were as perfect as ever. But they were already lifeless. Alicia fell over after seeing her parents' bodies covered in cloth in the hospital mortuary, and their bodies were pale and cold.Their legs were given name tags according to their name, age and cause of death."What happened-"Nicholas immediately lowered his voice. He embraced Alicia's body when she cried out, "No...."Without making any comment, Nicholas remained silent and hugged Alicia from behind. The girl's cries sounded tight and loud. All the emotions that she had been holding back from the beginning, broke out instantly."Mom! Dad!"Nicholas' heart beat with pain. This was not the first time Alicia had felt the loss of death. Her parents had died twice when she was little, her friends had died at school, her favorite prof
CHAPTER 100And Alicia jumped off the building.Unfortunately, the grim reaper didn't want her dead that day. One strong hand grabbed Alicia and pulled her so hard that she opened her eyes in surprise and lost her balance. Her weak body was carried away by the pull of the man's hand and she fell right into the man's arms. And that man was Nicholas. They stared in silence, before Nicholas finally used both hands to hug Alicia tighter."Nic..."Alicia's cries were faintly heard as the girl hid her face inside Nicholas' broad chest. And Nicholas could only exhale, taking in everything that had just happened.****The funeral of Alicia's adoptive parents was private. This was Alicia's request and Nicholas helped the girl realize her wish. After the funeral attendants finished burying Michelle and Edward in adjoining graves, they quickly left, leaving Alicia and Nicholas who were now still standing in front of the final resting place for Alicia's parents.Alicia was wearing a long black dr
