Chapter 4

Penulis: Dream Fish
Dexter cleared his throat with a light cough before pressing the answer button. "Yes, Grandpa?"

The robust voice of an old man came from the other end. "Dexter, I may be sick, but I'm not dead. Did you even know it was Angie's birthday yesterday?"

Upon hearing this, Dexter glanced at Angela before speaking politely into the phone. "Of course I knew it was her birthday yesterday. I even organized a grand celebration for her."

"Hmph! Don't try to fool me!" Joseph Bamford scolded.

The next moment, there was the sound of Joseph angrily handing the phone over to his butler, Gary Butler.

Gary took over the call and spoke respectfully to Dexter. "Mr. Bamford Jr., Mr. Bamford Sr. has been feeling some discomfort in his chest over the past couple of days. If you have the time, bring your wife along to visit him at Bamford Manor. Mr. Bamford Sr. might not say it, but he probably misses the pasta she makes."

Dexter remained silent for a moment before agreeing. "I'll bring her over shortly, Mr. Butler."

After hanging up, Dexter calmly adjusted his cuffs and asked in a seemingly casual tone, "Didn't you post any birthday photos yesterday?"

With just that question, Angela understood what he meant—the lack of photos had caused Joseph to worry.

"Grandpa isn't well, and he's getting on in years. Whatever you may be thinking, keep it to yourself in front of him. Understood?" Dexter warned.

Angela nodded wordlessly and got up to get dressed.

Joseph was the only one in the Bamford family who had ever truly treated her well.

When she had been ten, Marie had died saving Joseph. After that, Bill had gotten married again, and Judy had become her stepmother. Bill had used this debt of gratitude to secure Angela a foothold in the Bamford family.

Feeling sympathy for her and having always liked Angela, Joseph had forced Dexter to marry her.

She and Dexter getting divorced was a private matter. So, there was no need to trouble Joseph about it. He didn't need to know.

Dexter went downstairs first and picked out a Cullinan from the garage. He didn't ask Chet to drive him to Bamford Manor. Instead, he drove the car out himself. The engine emitted a low hum in the night.

Angela changed into a white camisole dress and draped a pale blue shawl over it, accentuating her curves. Her long hair cascaded down her shoulders, and the pale skin on her neck was partially visible, adding a touch of allure.

She forcefully tugged on the handle of the door to the back seat, but it wouldn't budge.

The window on the passenger side rolled down halfway, and Dexter's impatient voice came from inside. "Get in the front."

Angela hesitated only briefly before opening the door and getting in.

Dexter stepped on the accelerator pedal somewhat heavily as he drove off.

The inertia caused Angela to be thrown back into her seat slightly, making her frown. She glanced sideways at Dexter, who had one hand resting on the wheel. He was completely focused on the road, seemingly oblivious to her presence.

He had always been like this. In their three years of marriage, he had seldom given her any of his attention unless it had been necessary.

Over the years, Angela had rarely gotten to ride in his car. The times she had gotten to sit in the passenger seat were few and far between.

Now that she was preparing to divorce Dexter, she didn't bother to engage him further. Hence, the drive was silent.

The car stopped in front of Bamford Manor, which was on the outskirts of town. With its lush greenery and vast expanse, it resembled castle grounds from the last century—rustic yet grand on the outside and luxurious on the inside.

Just as Angela was about to open the door to get out, Dexter grabbed her wrist. "Hold on."

She turned around in puzzlement to see Dexter looking unusually serious.

"What?" she asked curtly.

"Let me remind you again—Grandpa can't handle surprises. Think carefully before you speak," Dexter reminded warily.

Angela nodded, her tone cold as she replied, "I know."

As she got out, she shrugged her shoulders against the chilly night air. With brisk steps, she walked toward the entrance.

Dexter watched her back, noticing that she didn't wait for him. He caught up with her in a few strides and placed a hand over her shoulder.

He felt her halt, and her body stiffened for a brief second. Ultimately, she didn't pull away.

In the main hall on the first floor, Dexter's mother, Fiona Rosewell sat elegantly, holding a steaming cup of dandelion tea prepared by the maids.

She didn't even look up when Gary announced Dexter and Angela's return. Angela wasn't surprised. For the past three years, Fiona had always been indifferent toward her.

Once, Angela would have felt hurt upon being given the cold shoulder. But now that she was on the brink of divorce from Dexter, none of it seemed to matter anymore.

Knowing that Dexter would never take the initiative to greet Fiona, Angela took the initiative to greet her instead.

After a moment, Fiona reluctantly nodded and said, "Oh, you're here. Go greet your grandfather."

She sipped her tea daintily—a signal for them to leave her alone. Her gaze lingered on Dexter's hand that was on Angela's shoulder, and she frowned slightly. She had always disliked seeing them being intimate.

Dexter, as usual, ignored her and walked straight past her.

Fiona and Dexter had been estranged for years. Once, Angela had tried to act as a mediator between them. Now that she had her own troubles, she no longer had any energy to spare them.

She followed Dexter into Joseph's bedroom and found the latter looking somewhat weary as he leaned against the headboard.

Upon hearing the door open, Joseph looked up. His eyes lit up with joy when he saw it was them.

"You're here, Angie! I was just thinking of you, birthday girl. Gary, go bring the gift I prepared for Angie."

Joseph's cheerful expression nearly brought tears to Angela's eyes. In this household, he was probably the only one who had bothered to prepare a gift for her.

"Grandpa, I heard you've been unwell lately. Don't worry about me. Your health means more to me than any gift you could give," Angela said with concern.

She chatted with Joseph for a while before going off to make him some fresh pasta.

As soon as she left, Joseph's expression became grim. He looked up and narrowed his eyes at Dexter, who had been silent since he had entered the room. "Cat got your tongue?"

The corners of Dexter's lips became slightly downturned. "Didn't I bring her back to see you?"

"Don't act innocent, Dexter. I'm warning you, don't keep this up until it's too late. Angie is a good woman—don't take her for granted! Keep an eye on the Graham family. They're not easy to deal with either.

"As for that other Carrey woman… You'd better cut ties with her completely! Don't upset Angie, you fool."

Dexter mumbled a few vague responses, hoping to end the conversation. Joseph was about to lose his temper when Angela returned with the fresh pasta.

"Here's the pasta, Grandpa. Give it a try and see if it is as good as you remember," Angela said.

Joseph noticed that Dexter and Angela had barely had any interaction with each other ever since they had arrived. In his eyes, this was a clear sign of trouble.

He was especially worried because Angela's eyes no longer shone when she looked toward Dexter.

Joseph felt an urgency to intervene on behalf of his oblivious grandson. He took a spoonful of the pasta and praised it.

Then, he asked with a smile, "Angie, I'm getting older. I hope that my home can be a bit more lively, you know? When are you two planning to give us a new family member?"

Angela had just gotten out of the car and steadied herself when the black Cullinan drove off without any hesitation, leaving her in a cloud of dust. She stood there in a daze for a moment before letting out a self-deprecating laugh and thought, "That's right. He's always been like this."But before she had time to dwell on her misery, her phone rang urgently. Angela took out her phone and saw that it was an unknown number."Hello, is this Ms. Graham? I'm the property manager for Villa Heights. I'm calling to confirm if your property has been sold.""Why do you ask?" Angela's heart skipped a beat.Over the years, she had managed the property, so the contact information listed was hers. However, when Marie had passed away, she had been too young. So, Bill had put all of Marie's assets under his name. When Angela had been young, he had used to say to her, "When you grow up and find your Prince Charming, I'll turn this house into a castle for you both to live in happily ever after!"

Angela frowned and denied it without a second thought. However, the manager didn't believe her. "Regardless, we just found out that you have no work experience. I'm sorry, but we can't hire a complete newbie like you." Even though Angela repeatedly assured him of her expertise in design, the manager was adamant about not going through with hiring her.As Angela stared at the manager, who looked deeply troubled, she instantly understood everything. It was Dexter! He was forcing her to give in!Amidst the strange gazes everyone was casting her way, Angela took her belongings and left.At that moment, she felt an urge to call Dexter and ask him why he was doing this. Still, she resisted that impulse and refrained from acting on it. She kept convincing herself not to let this get to her. It was just a job—she could find another.Angela dragged her exhausted body back to her rented apartment, only to find her belongings thrown out and lying miserably in the hallway. Nothing had be

"It's none of your business." Angela tried to pull away, but Dexter scooped her up by holding her around the waist."Are you really risking your life out of sheer stubbornness? You're nuts, Angela!" Dexter scolded, his expression glum as he carried her out the door and shoved her into the car."I'm not going with you! Even if I die, it has nothing to do with you!" Angela protested.Erica turned around from the front seat and spoke in a somewhat chastising tone. "Mrs. Bamford, I was the one who caused your job and housing issues. It had nothing to do with Mr. Bamford."She thought Angela was out of her mind to speak to Dexter like that. Who did she think she was to scream at him? Angela clearly didn't know her place.Angela ignored Erica. Without Dexter's approval, who would have dared to humiliate and push her around so mercilessly? The only reason he had done that was to make her submit and continue being his spineless trophy wife. But she was determined not to give him that sa

Zack hung his head in shame, unable to say a word. The man in black sneered. "Desire is a bottomless pit, lady. Your brother has no real skills but dreams of getting rich overnight. He took a high-interest loan from me. The interest is just piling up. If you don't want to help him, it's fine. I'll just take one of his hands to teach him a lesson.""Angie, I swear I'll never gamble or borrow money again! This is the last time—I'll turn over a new leaf! If not for me, then for your mom's house! If I'm gone, they'll definitely take it!" Zack prostrated himself before Angela and begged desperately.Angela bit her lip and reluctantly took out her wedding ring. This was her masterpiece, and when it had initially been released, it had caused a sensation in the design world. So many diamond wedding rings on the market had since been inspired by hers.Yet, to this day, no one knew she was the designer."Is this worth anything?" The man in black held up the wedding ring, examining it under

At that moment, Dexter wanted nothing more than to crush Angela's jaw to make her remember. No one knew better than he did just how important that wedding ring was to her.Angela, on the other hand, struggled hard against him. Red marks appeared on her pale cheek from his vice-like grip. Her eyes were red, but she clenched her teeth and refused to beg for mercy. That illusionary love she had once held on to had vanished the moment she had discovered Elena's existence. Selling that ring had been a relief. Otherwise, it would have only reminded her of the humiliating life she had lived the last three years, being nothing more than a doormat to Dexter. As she struggled, her towel slipped and exposed her breasts—it was an alluring sight.Dexter's gaze darkened as his eyes shot to her exposed skin for a brief moment. He then smirked wickedly while remarking, "What's this? Are you trying to seduce me now? Do you think that using such cheap tactics will make me go easy on you?"His gaz

Angela didn't look up. "Please move aside."She was polite, but the person in front of her didn't budge."It's only been a few days, and you've turned yourself into a beggar? Angela, would you really rather degrade yourself like this?" A familiar, cold voice came from above. The speaker's tone was dripping with contempt.Angela froze and looked up, meeting Dexter's deep, dark gaze. As their eyes met, she swallowed nervously. Nevertheless, her initial surprise quickly turned to annoyance."Why can't you just leave me alone?" She gathered up her chicken thigh and snacks, ready to leave. Her days had been fulfilling and busy lately, so she had barely thought of him. But she had only managed to take a few steps before Dexter grabbed her by the collar and dragged her back to his car.As he leaned close, Angela glared at him warily. "If you come any closer, I'll bite you again."Dexter pulled a long face instantly, and he grabbed her wrist."You look ugly. How am I supposed to take y

After a brief pause, Angela smiled. "Oh, really? I didn't know that. Dexter bought this dress for me. As for where he got it, or how many there are in the country—I honestly have no idea. I have plenty of dresses like this in my closet, Ms. Carrey. If you like, I can give you a few."Angela's voice was clear and pleasant to the ears. Her gaze was pure and free of any hint of sarcasm. It was as if she hadn't noticed the mocking undertone in Shelley's and Elena's words.Elena's face fell instantly. She couldn't believe that the dress she had been so proud of was nothing more than one of the less remarkable pieces in Angela's closet. It was impossible. Dexter would never take Angela shopping, let alone buy her such a dress!Shelley noticed Elena's reaction and took a step forward. She snapped at Angela, "What nonsense are you saying? Why would Dexter buy you clothes? Everyone knows you threw yourself at him. He—" "Why are you so worked up, Ms. Ruthford? You're getting a bit too emo

Instinctively, Dexter turned to look just as Angela glanced back at him. She flashed him a smug smile."Angie, you look beautiful today. This dress suits you so well. Dexter and I spent quite some time picking it out for you. It really is stunning!" Joseph praised her with a smile. With that, all doubts were dispelled instantly. It turned out that Joseph himself had chosen this dress for Angela. Of course, he wouldn't buy her counterfeit dress.Elena felt as if she had been slapped across the face. It left a stinging, burning sensation on her cheek. The faces of those who had mocked Angela earlier turned pale as they fell silent too.Angela's nose tingled as she fought back the urge to tear up. Of all the Bamford family members, only Joseph had ever shown her true kindness. She knew very well that Dexter would never care about her clothing. Joseph had said that the dress was from him to salvage her dignity. As the drinks flowed and the guests mingled, Angela remained by Joseph'

In the afternoon, Angela took her achievement to the headquarters, preparing to hold a management meeting to officially discuss the full-scale rollout of livestream commerce. Just as she was about to enter Austin's office, she tripped before she could even take her first proper step inside. It was not just a stumble. She truly lost her balance and went tumbling several feet forward."Oh no! Ms. Graham, are you okay? I'm so sorry. I swear I didn't do it on purpose." The apologetic voice belonged to a young woman. She was tall and slender, with long, brunette curls that gave her an effortlessly alluring charm. She helped Angela up, and it was only then that Angela realized that the young woman was clearly trained. Her grip was surprisingly strong, and the fact that she had managed to precisely trip Angela in passing, all while wearing high heels, was no accident."And you are?" Angela asked, rubbing her aching arm discreetly, suspicion flickering in her eyes. She wasn't sure i

Sure enough, the moment the call connected, Erwin immediately burst out. "Angela, shut down that ridiculous live stream right now! What kind of nonsense is this? It's embarrassing, attention-seeking, and completely devoid of integrity!" His voice was so loud it nearly distorted through the phone. Angela, helpless as ever, held the phone away from her ear, waiting patiently for him to finish his rant. Then, she replied calmly, "Mr. Mack, our branch's sales in the past two hours have already surpassed the entire last month's revenue. Are you sure you want us to shut down the live stream?"She opened the live stream's business insights page and took a screenshot of the cumulative sales from the statistics. When she sent it to Erwin, she realized he had already blocked her. The glaring red exclamation mark clearly showed how much he despised her.Angela paused for a moment but didn't get angry. "Besides, you agreed to let me conduct this trial, so why are you...""I don't care! Wh

It was the first day of the trial run, and Angela had to oversee everything personally to ensure nothing went wrong. Fortunately, everyone had undergone special training, so they worked efficiently with a clear division of tasks. In no time, a fairly professional-looking live stream setup was ready. Angela inspected the setup, checked the time, and decided not to rush into starting. Instead, she let the team familiarize themselves once more with the products, their colleagues, and the group livestreaming process. At 3:00 pm, the live stream officially began. Angela first arranged for three male livestreamers to appear on camera. Leading the group, Ryder Yonkers was the first to speak, briefly introducing his two co-livestreamers to the few viewers in the live stream. The other two also exchanged a few words with the audience before officially diving into the product introductions. To make a strong first impression, Angela carefully selected various products at different tiers

Angela swirled the wine in her glass and said with a smile, "Well, that's true. No need to bother with it."While Angela was carefree and unbothered, Daphne and the others couldn't just sit by and do nothing. "Isn't this inappropriate? Shouldn't we explain that they're the company's newly hired streamers?" Daphne asked cautiously. Angela waved her hand nonchalantly. "Do whatever you want. There's bound to be another trending topic tomorrow morning anyway. As long as you don't mind the hassle, go ahead and explain.""I don't think there's any need to explain today. If we respond too frequently, the public will just see us as overly sensitive, unable to handle the slightest stir. It could actually hurt our image," Raquel added. Daphne nodded, somewhat understanding, and said no more. "Smile! Don't look so down. Come on! You're still young." Angela glanced at Harry, signaling him to pour Daphne a drink. Daphne quickly declined. She wasn't used to drinking. Back when she w

Angela said helplessly, "Mr. Mack, we're already one step behind. If we don't pick up the pace and catch up, our market share will be further eroded. At that point, don't even think about making a profit. We'd be lucky if we don't make a loss."She had made up her mind.Seeing that he couldn't persuade her, Erwin had no choice but to change the subject. "If you insist on doing this, I won't interfere, but you can't do it under the company's name or tarnish its reputation." Angela let out a faint sigh. "How about this? We start with a pilot run in one offline store. If it succeeds, we can scale up gradually. Mr. Mack, I've already compromised. I hope you won't cling to old ways and hold the company back." With that, she left.Watching her slender yet stubborn figure walking away, Erwin trembled with anger. Yet, there was nothing he could do. Angela was now the company's official CEO. No one could refute her, not even an old-timer like him.Angela executed the plan swiftly, ins

Although Angela and Dexter had already parted ways, the fact that Angela and Fiona could still maintain a good relationship indirectly proved that Angela herself had done nothing seriously wrong. In other words, their divorce was likely an amicable one, with both parties reaching a mutual agreement and cutting ties without conflict."Ms. Graham, they're really something. A lot of people are now talking about how well you and Madam Fiona get along," Daphne remarked with a smile over lunch.Angela said indifferently, "Did you find the people I asked for? How's the progress?"To her, public opinion was trivial. That matter was already in the past.Daphne was momentarily stunned before replying, "I tried, but HR isn't being very helpful. It seems they're unwilling to cooperate."Without even looking up, Angela said, "If they won't cooperate, just have Raquel and Harry handle it. They must find eight people within three days who are good-looking, in great shape, and have prior livestr

After all, Angela knew better than anyone that Fiona genuinely cared for her and was truly worried about her."There's no need for that," Fiona said, waving her hand. "These are two assistants I recently promoted. They're quite capable, and they'll be your PR assistants from now on."With that, the young man and woman behind her stepped forward to introduce themselves. The woman had a sharp, professional appearance—almost like a government official. Her sleek ponytail sat neatly behind her head, and she gave a subtle yet confident smile."Nice to meet you, Ms. Graham. I'm Raquel Livingston," Raquel said, extending her hand to shake Angela's.Her gaze was sincere, looking as if she admired Angela. "Ms. Graham, I'm well aware of your achievements. In fact, I specifically requested to be assigned to you. I hope you'll keep me on your team."Angela was a little taken aback. "Oh, have we met before?"Raquel shook her head decisively. "No, but I know about how you revived Graham Group

Erwin got even more frustrated as he thought about it. The company had spent years building its public image, and he wasn't about to let some newcomer destroy it."Mr. Mack, please have a seat and hear me out first." Angela maintained a gentle and warm attitude. It was hard to be mad at someone who was being nice, so Erwin swallowed back some of his harsher words upon seeing her respectful demeanor."What exactly is going on between you and Dexter now?" he asked directly.Angela's smile faded, her expression turning serious. "Mr. Bamford and I are already divorced. We have nothing to do with each other anymore, and I will handle any remaining matters as soon as possible. Please don't worry."It was important to adopt the right attitude when acknowledging an issue.Just then, Daphne hurried in, looking anxious. She had been about to speak when she noticed Erwin in the room and hesitated."What's going on? Just say it," Erwin prompted.Daphne glanced at Angela, who gave her a no

"I'll pack everything up and send it to him," Angela added. "Do you have something else to say?"Jennifer hadn't expected Angela to be so decisive and unemotional about it. Angela didn't even seem the least bit angry.Internally, Jennifer sighed, lamenting that her road ahead was long and full of obstacles."No, that won't do. It has to be now. I came all this way; I can't just leave empty-handed." She crossed her arms, her attitude unyielding.Daphne finally lost her patience and snapped, "You're being unreasonable! Do you expect Ms. Graham to carry everything with her at all times?"Jennifer suddenly seemed to recall something. Her eyes flicked to Angela's wrist. "Then, how about this—take off your bracelet and return it first. You can send the rest later. That way, the break will be clean."Angela froze for a moment, her fingers curling tightly in her sleeve, her entire body stiffening. This bracelet meant something special to her.She had wanted to keep it as a memory, but
