Chapter 3

Author: Millie Bridge
Suddenly finding out I had a husband made it impossible to fall asleep, so I decided to call my best friend, Cordelia Lowell.

I hadn't reached out to her for months because I didn't want her to worry about my injuries. Thankfully, she hadn't contacted me either. If she had, she definitely would have found out how badly I was hurt.

But the moment the call connected, I couldn't help but feel a little bitter as I said, "Cordelia, you're so mean. I didn't call you, so you decided not to call me either? It's been over two months! Not a single call or even a text. Are you serious?"

I expected her to hurriedly explain that she had been somewhere remote, buried in research, with no signal or way to contact me.

Instead, there was a long silence on the other end before she finally said, "Emilia, we're not friends anymore. Did you forget we cut ties?"

Her words hit me harder than the revelation about my mysterious husband. I was completely stunned. Cordelia was my best friend in the world—the one person I would never abandon, even at the cost of my life.

How could we have possibly fallen out? It didn't make any sense.

However, Cordelia insisted that it was true. She said it was because of Irvin. She explained that my marriage to Irvin wasn't a loveless business arrangement like I thought. On the contrary, I was head over heels for him, loving him so obsessively and unconditionally that my love had no limits.

Words like "clingy" or "hopelessly devoted" didn't even begin to describe it. She compared me to a tragic heroine who had given up everything for love.

Even after discovering that Irvin didn't truly love me, that he had married me to seize power, and that his heart belonged to my adopted sister Julianne, I still couldn't let him go.

Despite all the humiliation and cruelty he put me through for Julianne, his untouchable "perfect" love, I had supposedly done everything imaginable to keep him—stooping so low that I even resorted to self-harm to try to win him back.

She said I became a public joke, the woman everyone in our circle bet on—gambling on just how much lower I would sink each day to avoid being abandoned.

Cordelia had tried to convince me to leave him, but I wouldn't listen. And in the end, I had chosen him over her, cutting ties with my best friend for the sake of a man who never deserved me.

Her words left me speechless. The person she described didn't sound like me at all. I could never love anyone so deeply that I had lost all my dignity. And I would never, ever abandon my best friend for a man.

Sadly, Cordelia didn't care about my protests. She told me not to call her again.

She didn't want to hear my voice or know anything more about me or Irvin. She said whatever was happening to me now was my own fault, and she didn't want to be dragged into it anymore.

Her words stung. After all, Cordelia and I had been through so much together that I knew she wouldn't have said those things unless I had truly disappointed her.

As much as I didn't want to believe I could ever stoop so low for someone, I couldn't deny the pain in her voice.

Right before hanging up, though, she softened—just a little. "Emilia, is something wrong? Do you need my help? If it's serious, I can help you one last time—for old times' sake."

That was Cordelia—tough on the outside but with the softest heart.

After I hung up, I felt even more restless. I lay there staring at the ceiling, unable to sleep, my mind spinning in circles.

I had been in rehab for over a month when I was finally allowed to leave the hospital. When I was discharged, my brother, Jeremy Quill, came to pick me up.

He said, "Don't blame me or Mom and Dad for not coming to see you. You know how Lianne's health has always been fragile.

"She was really scared and got sick, so they couldn't leave her. And I just took over the company—lots of shareholders are unhappy, and I've been working nonstop. I really wanted to come, but…"

I lowered my gaze and gave a faint smile. "Yeah, I get it. Thanks for everything."

Even though I wasn't blaming him, Jeremy suddenly became irritated. "If you're upset, just say it! Don't keep acting all passive-aggressive!"

I was at a loss for words.

He continued, getting more heated. "We didn't come to see you, but do you ever think maybe you're partly to blame? You were in the hospital for over three months because of a little injury. You're really the most dramatic person I know!"

He added, "Is it any wonder Mom and Dad prefer Lianne over you? If you don't change, nobody's ever going to like you!"

His angry words were like a slap in the face. I could only manage a bitter smile. It seemed like Jeremy had forgotten that I had always hated going to the hospital as a kid. Whenever I got sick, he had to practically bribe me to go.

Now that I was out, I was just desperate to avoid the hospital as much as possible. I didn't care if I had a reason to act out. Even if I did, there was no way I would end up staying in the hospital for that long.

Jeremy kept going, complaining about his busy life and how the company demanded so much of his attention. "You've been at the hospital all this time, while I've been running around, dealing with everything. But whatever, I'm your brother, so I'll still come for you.

"Think about how I used to take care of you when we were kids. Nobody else has ever treated you as well as I have!"

I looked at him, a dull ache spreading in my chest. I remembered how great Jeremy had been to me when we were younger. He was really kind to me—until everything changed after our parents adopted Julianne.

Still weak from my hospital stay, I fell asleep in the car shortly after we left. When Jeremy woke me up, I stared out the window, confused for a moment, not realizing where we were until he impatiently urged me to pay attention.

"Jeremy, this isn't… my place," I began, but my words were cut off as he pulled me out of the car.

"Let's go. You've been hiding for over three months. It's time you apologized to Julianne."

I froze, realizing that was why he made time to pick me up—he wasn't just coming to see me; he had an agenda. He probably felt guilty but still wanted to keep up appearances.

Before I could say anything, Jeremy kept going. "You caused Lianne to get kidnapped with you, and she ended up sick for over a week. You owe her an apology."

I really didn't want to go. While I had forgotten some things, I still remembered the interactions between Julianne and the kidnappers. There were too many details that needed to be sorted out after the investigation.

However, my body was still fragile, and even the slightest tug made me wince. I didn't have the strength to fight back, so I reluctantly followed him.

When we entered the bar's private room, the atmosphere was thick with energy. A group of people had gathered around a man and a woman, encouraging them to kiss.

"Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!" they chanted.

The excitement in the room was contagious, and I found myself clapping along, urging them to kiss. It wasn't until I heard my own voice rise above the noise that the room suddenly went silent.

Everyone turned to stare at me, and I couldn't help but feel embarrassed.

"Hey, don't look at me like that! Keep going. You guys look great together!" I said, trying to shrug off the attention.

I glanced at the man in the middle of the circle, my so-called husband, Irvin. "Don't mind me. Just go ahead and kiss. I'm here to wish you both the best!"

I did not sit idly by during the month I spent in rehab. I made sure to conduct a thorough investigation of my relationship with Irvin and Julianne.Irvin and I had married for love—I thought I was marrying for the right reasons. I had poured everything into helping him start his business, even abandoning my studies to become a housewife so I could take better care of him.But all along, he was just using me, pretending to care. The truth was, he was in love with Julianne. After Julianne returned, things became clear. On our wedding anniversary, Irvin took Julianne to see the Northern Lights. On my birthday, he took her to Thogyo to enjoy the romantic spring season. For Valentine's Day, he gave her enough red roses to fill an entire villa and a massive diamond ring. Meanwhile, I received only the free gifts he got when buying her presents.Despite all of this, I didn't want to divorce him. After the pain, I still served him, running around taking care of him, just hoping to keep

Immediately, everyone started calling me cold-hearted. Amid their curses, I noticed Julianne's smug and provocative look.Ever since she moved into our house, I had repeatedly fallen victim to her supposed "gentle kindness". She was someone who could be ruthless, even with herself. It reminded me of the time she had framed me by grabbing my hand and forcing me to push her down the stairs. It resulted in her spending over a month in the hospital due to her severe injuries. After I spoke, she gave a pitiful yet sweet smile, and with the knife in her hand, she cut her throat. If it hadn't been for Irvin's quick reflexes kicking in, leading to him grabbing the knife before she could do any real damage, she might have bled out right there. Sometimes, I almost admired her for how far she was willing to go.Despite Irvin's quick actions preventing Julianne from bleeding to death, the knife still left a deep cut. It wasn't life-threatening, but even a small injury was enough to make Irvin

Mom was about to say something when my quick agreement stunned her. It seemed that was entirely out of her expectations.Even Dad, who was ready to blow his top, was taken aback. After all, the past me would never have agreed to a divorce even if they threatened to beat me to death. Before they could recover from their shock, I added, "I'm still not fully recovered and don't feel like moving around—I don't think I'll go with you to apologize. Once Irvin drafts the divorce agreement, have his lawyer bring it straight to me."With that, I pulled the covers over my head and lay down. The soaked quilt felt suffocating, and I felt like I was struggling to catch my breath. Still, it was better than facing my parents' impending joy.My parents knew me well enough to realize I wasn't bluffing. Though they were incredulous that I agreed so readily, they understood that I genuinely wanted a divorce.Hence, it didn't take long before their kindness and affection surfaced."You silly child

Startled, I instinctively took several steps back.I thought he was pretending to be drunk so that he could take advantage of me. But what I didn't expect was for him to be even more dangerous than that!"Honey... I'm back..." He staggered to his feet and lunged at me.With his tall stature and muscular build, I might not survive if he managed to knock me over. Frightened, I ducked to the side.He missed and met with the ground instead, his massive body shaking the floor with a loud thud."Honey…"A pair of doe eyes looked up at me, utterly dejected. He probably couldn't believe I would have avoided him.His expression resembled that of a child whose happiness had been crushed—one who had joyfully run to embrace his most trusted person only to be pushed away.As much as I didn't want to, I felt somewhat sorry for him.I began to understand why I used to be so infatuated with this man, reluctant to let go. His face was precisely my type—charming in a way that tugged at my heart

"Emilia, how many times must I tell you? There is nothing between Lianne and me—especially not what you're thinking! Stop using divorce as a threat. Even if you do, I'm not sending her abroad!"I thought it had finally dawned on him that I genuinely wanted this divorce. Who would have known that he would twist my words? Here he was, accusing me of using divorce as leverage again. This inability to communicate with him in a human language was driving me to the brink of despair.Once again, I looked at him with a grave expression and said, "Irvin Sawyer, I'm not being dramatic, nor am I using divorce to threaten you. And I certainly don't intend for you to send Julianne abroad. "I sincerely, wholeheartedly, truly hope you two can be together! If I could cut my heart open and show it to you, you would be able to see just how genuine my blessings are for you two!"Irvin clenched his hands into tight fists at his sides. "It's nothing, just a small injury." Irvin retracted his hand, putting some distance between Julianne and himself.A hint of coolness flashed across Julianne's eyes, but it disappeared in an instant. When she raised her gaze to meet Irvin's, her usual gentleness and concern were back. "Irvin, you should go get your hand bandaged.""There's no need. I'll take you to Professor Stone."My parents sighed inwardly as they watched Irvin tend to Julianne. For her sake, he didn't hesitate to disregard his own injury. If it hadn't been for that incident, Irvin would have divorced and been with Julianne by now! How perfect would that have been?Alas…Convinced it was all my fault, my parents—Henry Quill and Catherine Bennet— found it even harder to like me, their biological daughter, now.Growing increasingly angry, Mom gave me a call. "Millicent Quill, why did you agree to the divorce so quickly? Is it because you knew Irvin would still struggle to get over the hurdle in his heart?"I w

As night fell, the club gradually grew lively. The flashing neon lights and boisterous atmosphere were in full swing. When Gideon was escorting clients to a private room to discuss business, he suddenly stopped. After instructing his assistant to take the clients to the room first, he walked toward the adjacent room. His gaze fell on Irvin after exchanging pleasantries."Irvin, isn't today Mrs. Quill Senior's 70th birthday? Why are you drinking here instead of attending the celebration?"Irvin didn't respond. He simply raised his glass and downed another mouthful of liquor."What's wrong? Still angry at Emilia?" he asked. "Honestly, Emilia's being unreasonable. She should be making an effort to reconcile with you at a time like this."It's Mrs. Quill Senior's 70th birthday. If you don't attend with her, imagine how much ridicule she'll face on her own."Irvin's eyes darkened as he unconsciously glanced at his phone. In the past, I became self-deprecating and timid because of Irvin's disdain for me. But the real reason I didn't fight back against these women was because I believed women shouldn't make life harder for other women.Yet, my concessions didn't earn me peace—they only encouraged them to push further, humiliating me time and time again. If that was the case, then fine—I should go at it!Violet and Ellis were close friends of Katie. After recovering from her initial shock, Katie quickly assumed a stern tone to reprimand me. "Emilia, how dare you speak like that!"I smiled at her and replied, "Don't be in such a hurry, Katie. And you?"Instead of blaming me for not having children, why not take your dear nephew for a checkup and see if he's the problem? After all, the Sawyers are famously 'inadequate.' He no longer had a youthful air around him and had now transformed into a full-grown adult. So much so that his image no longer matched the version of a younger brother I had.Noah had changed a lot, but the one thing that hadn't changed was the burning intensity in his eyes whenever he looked at me. In this world, many mothers didn't love their children, and oftentimes, it was without reason. However, these mothers usually only loved themselves and not anyone else, let alone someone else's child. So, when a mother only loved her adopted daughter and not her biological one, there had to be a reason behind it.Mom answered William's question in a dazed state. William had encountered many strange things in life, but her answer still rendered him speechless.…That same evening, I had given Grandma a sponge bath and watched her until she fell asleep.I was about to go over some data when I received a message from William, saying he was in the hospital's garden.Figuring he had gotten the information he needed, I grabbed my down jacket and rushed downstairs. I was anxious to know what William had learned. As soon as I saw him, I asked, "What did my father say? Did he conduct any drug trials on Julianne?"William stared at me but didn't immediately answer. Henry was a man of poor character who couldn't do anything right. However, he had a natural talent for creating all sorts of harmful drugs. As mentioned, if these were medieval times, he would surely be exalted as a talented alchemist—known for his ability to craft and cure poison. Truthfully, any drug Henry casually created would definitely be considered illegal.Struck with an idea, I looked up at William and said, "Why don't you talk to Henry directly? Given your status, I'm sure he will happily tell you everything."William looked pleased at my use of the word "happily"."That's actually why I came," he admitted. Then, thinking of something else, I quickly added, "Actually, no. Henry might not happily spill the beans to you. He's very protective of Julianne, so he may lie to you instead. You'll need to be careful discerning which of his words are true."William chuckled. "I know, don't worry. Once I've gotten all the puzzle pieces, and if Julianne is no longer useful, I'll ha

I admit that my way of thinking was outdated and too conservative. However, that was who I was, and there was nothing I could do about it, even though I wanted to change. If I could change my personality and loosen up, my life would probably be a lot simpler. There were so many handsome men out there. What could be better than spending time with some of them?I couldn't help sighing as I pondered Noah's borderline obsession with me.Suddenly, my phone rang—it was William calling."Where have you gone? I came to the hospital to visit your grandmother, but you're not here," he said.Hearing this, I told him to wait for me and said I would be there soon. When I arrived at the hospital, William was leaning against a red maple tree and smoking a cigarette. On this crisp autumn day, he was dressed in a camel wool coat.
