The following day Shèngli got up with a severe headache. Hearing no noise from the next room, he went downstairs, expecting to find Claire in the kitchen. He entered the large, brightly lit room but saw no sign of his hostess. He tried to look in the living room; she was not there either.
With a strong sense of unease, he looked out the front door; the two new security guards got out of the dark sedan parked outside the house. Shèngli approached them.
"Has Miss Carter left yet?" He asked them.
"No, Mr. Lin. We came to relieve our colleagues at 06:00 and have not moved since." The younger of the two replied.
Shèngli re-entered the house and started calling her loudly. There was no answer. Agitation was taking over. With a cat-like sprint, he climbed the few steps leading upstairs.
He opened the door to Claire's room. Everything seemed to be in order, everything was in place, and the bed had been made. Then, however, a strong suspicion crept int
WARNING The following chapter contains explicit sex scenes and is therefore not suitable for underage audiences. Adam, coming out of the bathroom, heard Shàng Wèi's baritone voice talking on the phone. The tone of voice was caressing, almost intimate. Who is he talking to? He asked himself suspiciously. A strange feeling struck him in the pit of his stomach. Was it suspicion or jealousy he felt? He headed for the living room, trying to muffle the sound of his footsteps as much as possible; he wanted to be able to eavesdrop on some shred of that conversation. "You should have warned me at once." He heard Shàng Wèi say. It was strange that he had picked up his mobile phone again just as he had walked away. After making a couple of calls the previous evening, he'd turned it off and abandoned it on the kitchen table. Shàng Wèi hadn't used it for anything, saying he was afraid of being tapped h
Adam woke up around 3 a.m.; it had taken all the stamina he had to knock Shàng Wèi out. He felt somewhat debilitated, but he had a mission to accomplish. First, he checked that the man lying next to him was fast asleep, then went back into the living room. His mobile phone lay on the floor near the window. Shàng Wèi must have dropped it during the first assault. Adam picked it up and typed in the pin code. Fortunately, he had managed to peek at it the morning they had gone to Kan Te. Of course, he looked at the messages and e-mails first, but nothing was strange or shocking. The address book didn't seem to contain any alarming numbers either. All he had to do was look at the call log. The last number that had called him had an area code of +44, the British legend. It certainly wasn't the number of the security agency he had reached the day before, nor was it Shéngli's because the numbers didn't match. Who else could have called there? Whose unknown nu
"Dad, when are you going to make the announcement? There are a lot of things to set up and people to warn. We have to hurry. Poor Maylin is living like a soul in pain." Jia Li's petulant voice interrupted Ming Chun Chu's musings, intent on reviewing the bad contract he held in his hands for the umpteenth time. For many days now, he had shut himself away in his old study to avoid his daughter's complaints and his grandchildren's despotic attitudes. He had no peace at work either, having to constantly correct the mistakes of his incompetent son-in-law. Over the years, he had seen the thriving company that his father had painstakingly built up from a small workshop become weaker and weaker, to the benefit of younger, more economically attractive companies. He was too old to cope with all the technological gadgetry that seemed to have supplanted the dear old personal arrangements. Years ago, Chun Chu had hoped to fortify that precious inheritance
The surprise had been great when a few nights earlier, Chun Chu had found himself within walking distance of Adam again. That evening at the embassy, he had found out a lot about the Carter family. He had unwittingly witnessed a great deal of praise for them. From the comments of some of the guests, his son-in-law was a very influential person, and his three grandchildren were outstanding in the academic, artistic, and professional fields. All worthy of praise and respect. He could not say that about the four family members at his side. Chun Chu turned to look at his daughter's anxious face, nodded abruptly, and said, "Shàng Wèi does not sanction any union." "What does that mean? What does that deviant kid have to do with it? You should talk to Old Lin about this." The woman remarked in annoyance. "Old Lin said we can't expect anything from his firstborn." "Well! There's still Shèngli. After all, he's going into the family business too. Plus,
Shèngli's sudden arrival was an unexpected stroke of luck for Adam. He would finally be able to call the unknown number, the one he had secretly copied two days before. He had not yet succeeded because Shàng Wèi hardly ever left his side. Instead, he would stay at his house, drive him to work, and pick him up again as soon as he had finished. And when Adam wasn't being watched, he'd put two of Sun Wĕi Qí's best agency bodyguards on him. And when they were at home, of course, Shàng Wèi continued to demand his own 'debt collection,' putting him through exhausting nights of sex, preventing him from thinking about anything else. As a result, his investigations had ground to a halt. It was almost as if Shàng Wèi wanted to prevent him from discovering anything. As soon as the front door closed behind them when they returned in the evening, Shàng Wèi transformed himself into a ravenous predator that claimed its prey. He undressed them with impatient gestures
The flat was only three blocks away in a newly built building. It was a two-story house; the ground floor contained a beautiful modern kitchen, a large living room, a comfortable lounge with a fireplace, and a study. A wide marble staircase led to the upper floor, where there were four large bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. Although visibly uninhabited, Adam noticed that many of the items in the room belonged to him. They were either things he had left at his grandfather's house seven years earlier or things he had bought with Shàng Wèi and abandoned in his flat. Only the authors he loved the most appeared in the studio library. The same could be said for CDs, vinyl and DVDs. Only the artists he followed and listened to. The house seemed to be his. It was even furnished the way he liked it, a perfect mix of modern and vintage. It was almost like his flat in Soho, except that this house was more than twice his own size. He followed the two Lin brothers up
"You shouldn't spend so many hours in front of that screen. Your pretty, clear eyes might suffer." The mocking voice coming from the door made William look up. Then, somewhat annoyed at the intrusion, he looked at his leather-clad heckler. Claire had taken over his house for three days, turning it into the headquarters of the who-knows-what unmasking operation. For three days, William had been forced to endure the man's intrusion into his personal space. The fact that Sun Wĕi Qí was an integral part of that bizarre investigation group irritated him greatly. But, being in the minority, he could only grudgingly accept the situation. The only solution he could think of was to lock himself in his study as soon as he returned from the editorial office. That way, William could avoid the gang that hung around his main living room from morning to night. And, above all, he could prevent a confident mocking smile. When he found himself before Wĕi Qí aga
"It is necessary to join George in Ottawa," Claire exclaimed, reading the report she held in her hands. Wĕi Qí looked at the girl with a worried air. After the brief meeting with William, he had returned to the room where the two friends continued to research. "Meimei, you can't go. Especially now." He merely said to her. "I know," Claire replied, frustrated. "If I want to continue with what I'm doing, I don't have to move from here. So you don't need to remind me of that." "Meimei, don't take it out on me. My hands are tied right now too. So I must limit myself to being your bodyguard." "In fact, I'm not taking it out on you." "Why do you keep calling her that?" Margaret suddenly asked, reeling from reading the file she had in her hand. "Simple! Yueh as Shèngli's fiancée, is Shàng Wèi's meimei. Shàng Wèi and I are brothers. That means Claire is also my meimei." Wĕi Qí replied as if it was the most natural thing in the world.
