After an accident and miscarriage, Hansel Saddler and I are so devastated that we're both diagnosed with depression. For the next five years, I try my best to act like I'm normal as I care for him and try to cheer him up. This lasts until I overhear him speaking to the psychologist at the clinic's door. "Work's been getting busy lately, and pretending to be depressed makes it inconvenient to deal with that. Can you change my diagnosis to manic disorder?" The psychologist giggles. "You have been quite manic lately, darling. You've been making me feel really sore down there." "I can make you feel even more sore now." Then, I hear moans and groans. It turns out everything I've done over the past five years is nothing but a joke. I pull up my conversation with Colin Foster. "I agree to undergo secluded treatment deep in the mountains abroad."

Chapter 1

I received a voice message from the hospital director, Colin Foster. He said in relief, "Thank goodness! You finally said yes! Don't worry. We have the most professional medical team at your service. Your condition will improve for sure."I stared at the horrifying, criss-cross scars on my wrist with a bitter smile.Hansel Saddler had no idea that I had suffered from severe depression after that miscarriage five years back. I had been taking care of him all this while and seeing a professional behind his back. However, as my depression worsened, I could not stop the urge to self-harm.Meanwhile, Hansel faked his depression, letting me—the actual patient who acted like everything was fine—take care of him.The movements in the therapy room grew louder and more aggressive. "Don't forget the protection.""Darling, I want a baby. What do you think?" asked Giselle Pellington.Moments of silence later, Hansel agreed in a deep voice. "Sure."Hansel had stopped me from calling him ...

Chapter 2
I got a napkin to wrap my thigh with. While bearing the pain, I drove myself to the hospital. At the hospital, the doctor reminded me not to get my wound wet and avoid any strenuous activity. My phone buzzed. Hansel had called.I answered the call and was immediately greeted with anger. He ordered me, "I don't care where you are right now. Head to the therapy room and apologize to Giselle! She's in shock because of you!"I followed his instructions and walked to the door of the therapy room, but the hospital director stopped me. He sounded concerned."Ms. Colby, looking at your current state, I recommend hospitalization. Once the visa is approved, we will fly abroad to get you treated. Your depression has started to manifest with physical symptoms."I wanted to agree with him, but I somehow could not utter a word. I gaped. The door to the therapy room was suddenly flung open. Hansel's irritated voice filled the room."Who's going to receive treatment abroad? I'm certainly not l

Chapter 3
I raised my eyes to meet his worried gaze. Then, I asked him with much difficulty, "How did our baby die?"His eyes dimmed. Feeling bad, he hugged me. He then comforted me in a hoarse but gentle voice, "Mel, it's all in the past. We'll have another child."I pushed him away and repeated my question coldly. "How did our baby die?""Mel, it was a car accident. It wasn't your fault. Stop blaming yourself. Okay?"He sounded like he was very concerned about me. Pain was written in his eyes. He did not shun my gaze.Based on my understanding of Hansel over the years, he did not lie to me.I cried my heart out, feeling rather relieved that he wasn't in on it.But if he hadn't flirted with Giselle, she wouldn't have hurt my baby. After wiping away my tears, I stared at him in all seriousness."That car crash wasn't an accident. Giselle—"Halfway through my speech, we were distracted by the scream from outside the door."Ahh! Save me!"Giselle held her arm and cried for help in a

I was so close to losing my sanity. Hansel's words flashed across my mind.I yelled into my phone, "You can't! How could you move my child's grave! I bought that site for my baby. You have no right to move him around!"The gravesite was picked out carefully by Hansel and me. He had never been a believer, but he spent a few days at the church praying for our unborn child. Therefore, I could not believe that he would seek justice for Giselle by moving our child's gravesite. So, this was the punishment he had been talking about."Ms. Colby, we are very sorry." The cemetery worker hung up before I could protest.I removed the IV tubes attached to my hand and left the hospital in a hurry. At the cemetery, I felt cold from head to toe when the chilly winds swept through the grounds. To my dismay, I spotted Giselle from afar. She was holding an urn. The sight made my heart twist in pain.I ran to her, trying to wrestle the urn away from her, only to be shoved to the ground by Hansel

A strong gust of wind swept past, sending the ashes into the air. My attempt at reaching out and gathering them was futile.I felt so sorry for failing to protect my unborn child. Now, I had failed to even protect his remains.Hoarse from crying, I fell on my knees, trembling all over. I clutched tightly to a fistful of ashes.I felt a warm touch on my back. Hansel was giving me a hug. He whispered, "Mel, shall I take you home? We can always have another kid. I promise."I flashed a bitter, sarcastic smile at his so-called promise. When we got married eight years ago, he had made a vow, promising to only love me in this life. But reality had proven that such promises were nothing more than poison-coated candies."Fine. Let's go home," I replied softly. It was time to pack my belongings and leave. I had no place to call home from the moment Hansel lied to me.He helped me up from the ground. I shunned Giselle, who tried to support me.She pouted while looking pitiful. "Mel, I

Chapter 6
This was Hansel's first time driving in five years. In his five years of faking his depression, he had been good at acting. He did not talk and barely consumed anything. He even needed help to put on his clothes. My life revolved around taking care of him. Every day, I'd wake up at 6:00 am to make breakfast for him. He'd come home at midnight. I could only head to bed late after getting him in bed and washing up.I had to coax him, feed him, and take care of his physical and emotional needs. I drove him to work and to his treatment appointments. The last five years of my life were all about Hansel. I lived for him.Never had I thought that Hansel would use his psychotherapy sessions to seek pleasure with Giselle. I had so much hope in psychotherapy. No wonder he looked overjoyed before his hospital visit every time.I was more surprised at the fact that he had faked his depression. My fear, anxiety, and sacrifice over these years in hopes of his recovery were nothing but a joke.

Chapter 7
The excitement in Hansel's voice was no different than the time I became pregnant five years ago.I finally realized that his excitement stemmed from the fact that he had a child, not with whom he had a child. He did not care about the vessel carrying his child. Our years of love turned into a joke. He and I were childhood friends spanning 20 years. We went from being schoolmates to marrying each other. When I turned around, I met Colin's sympathetic gaze. He immediately offered me two pills when he noticed the gradually despairing look in my eyes and my trembling body. After I thanked him, I told him I’d get my visa and move abroad as soon as possible. …Hansel was at the hospital until nighttime, totally forgetting that he had left me in his car.Clutching the divorce agreement, I went to the inpatient department and pushed open the door to a VIP room.Hansel, who was in the middle of feeding soup to Giselle, froze upon seeing me. He blurted out, "Why are you here?"Stoppi

Chapter 8
Back at the hospital, Hansel seemed shocked when I hung up on him, as that was a first. It suddenly occurred to him that I was hospitalized and treated for a night before I was out of critical condition, all because I accidentally consumed fish. He'd often pay attention to my diet, making sure I didn't accidentally consume fish. Even he was surprised that the detail had slipped his mind.Perhaps, he had faked his depression for too long that he had forgotten about everything else. His heart hurt. He felt oddly on edge."Hansel, what's going on? Y-You are hurting me."When he finally snapped back to reality, he let go of Giselle's wrist that had reddened from his grip. He stood up and walked out the door."I'm leaving now. I promised Mel I'd go back and be with her. I'll visit you again tomorrow."Hearing that, Giselle immediately flipped open her blanket to reveal a tight bunny suit. She hugged him tight, suffocating him with her perfume. She pressed her soft body against his c

Colin chuckled softly, but it was a sarcastic smile."Hansel Saddler, aren't you the one who's faking your symptoms? Since you can't make sense of Melissa's patient records, let me walk you through it."She suffered from severe depression after her miscarriage five years ago. Have you noticed the scars on her wrist and her neck? Do you have any idea how much suffering she's been through?"However, she refused to be warded because she needed to look after you. Every smile she put on for you hurt her more."I'm more surprised that you faked your depression. I really feel sorry for Melissa. She's getting treated abroad. I'd advise you not to harass her, unless you want her to die."Colin's harsh words drove a knife into Hansel's heart.Hansel stood there, frozen and speechless. He nearly could not breathe from the heartbreak.Memories of my lifeless eyes flashed across his mind.He wondered, "When did Mel lose her spark?"After what felt like an eternity, he finally croaked, "Wil

Chapter 10
Three years later, I finally left the remote mountains and embraced the outside world once more. My mindset had completely changed. As soon as I arrived at the airport in Blumland, I heard someone calling to me."Mel!"I turned around and saw Hansel. His face, which was covered in stubble, broke into my line of sight.Dark circles hung beneath his eyes. He looked like he'd aged ten years."Mel, it's really you… I finally found you. Let's go home. Our child is waiting for us at home. We can go home together…"Before I could react, he pulled me into a tight embrace—so tight I could hardly breathe. He did not want to let go for even a second as if that would mean losing me forever."Miss, do you need help?"An airport security guard pried Hansel off me and stood between us. They told me that Hansel had shown up at the airport almost every day for the past three years. He had been harassing countless women and refusing to leave no matter how many times they chased him away.Look
