Aurora:

I arrived at the apartment late that night, feeling heavy and drained, with the last look on Adrian's face before he stepped out stuck to my head.

I was afraid he was going to say something. But to my utmost relief he left when I told him to, and I appreciated that.

A deep breath escaped my lips and I slid my bag from my shoulders, dropping it on the couch before heading straight to the kitchen to get a cup of water.

My gaze fell on the cooked meal on the stove and I immediately knew Trish was back. Without much thought, I walked over to the refrigerator and opened it, grabbing a bottle of water before bringing it out and pouring it into my glass.

I walked over to the stove and opened the pot to see what Trish made. I wasn't surprised when I saw that it was just the usual. Pasta. Trish’s favorite food if you ask me.

I closed the pot before bringing the cup to my mouth and gulping down the water. Placing the glass back to its place, my legs marched out of the ki

♛ Aurora: “Are you up?” Another message was sent almost immediately, and it read: “Can we meet?” I absentmindedly read the message out loud. A frown curved up Trish’s brows and she looked away from the movie she was watching, sparing me a side glance. “Who the fuck wants to meet you by five minutes to 12 A.M?” She asked, her brows pulled together and her gaze dropped to my phone. I mirrored her expression as I stared blankly at the screen of my phone, wondering exactly what Adrian was supposed to do. Why would he want to see me this late? What was so important that he couldn't leave till tomorrow? I stared at the screen, and answered Trish. “Adrian.” She scoffed, shifting on the couch, and turning her gaze back to the movie, “Of course, it’s him. What does he want now?” I didn’t reply immediately. Instead, I tapped out, “For what?” and sent the message. A response came almost instantly. “It's about the project. I received a response earlier about the p

♛ Aurora: I took the file from Adrian, feeling my fingers tighten around the edges as I flipped it open. My eyes skimmed through the documents inside. The first few pages contained financial records and transactions I didn’t recognize at first, until I saw my company’s name linked to some purchases. I frowned. “What… what is this?” My chest felt heavy, and my fingers trembled against the file I was holding. The purchases weren't something I recognized. “And what does it have to do with my assistant?” I couldn't help but ask, ‘cause why was he asking how much I trusted my assistant? What does this have to do with her? Adrian’s jaw tensed as he leaned against his seat, looking up front at first but then he glanced over at me. “It’s proof. The structural collapse wasn’t an accident, Rory. Someone tampered with the materials that were brought in for building, construction and all. Replaced them with cheaper, unstable substitutes. And they covered it up in the financi

♛ Aurora: The car suddenly felt suffocating for me. I inhaled and exhaled, before brushing my fingers through my hair and ruffling it. The air felt thick like it was pressing down on my chest. “I need air.” I muttered, and didn't wait for him to say anything before pushing the door open and stepping out into the night. I started walking. Not in any particular direction, not even to my house that was just a few steps away, just forward. Away. I could feel the frustration knotting itself in my stomach. Adrian didn’t call after me. But I heard the sound of the car being closed shut. Breeze brushed my hair, disheveling it as I kept walking down the dark street that had barely enough street lights around. I couldn't even see where I was heading to. I just kept walking anyway, because I was certain nothing would go wrong, especially since I knew Adrian was a few steps behind me. I appreciated the silence between us, with just nothing but lightning lighting up t

♛ Aurora: Adrian's throat worked as he swallowed, his Adam’s apple bobbing. He exhaled a shaky breath before speaking, his voice sounded rough, almost brittle. “I had to get a heart transplant.” He said finally, and as if on point, a thunderstorm rumbled somewhere close to us. The words crashed over me drowning out everything else - the rain and even the sound of my own heartbeat. I blinked, certain I had misheard him. “What?” His dark eyes bore into mine, heavy with different emotions swirling around them. “I was dying.” He let out. He was staring at me deeply to see through my reaction to his words. A minute passed with nothing but silence between us, before he added, “And I knew that if you stayed… if you saw me like that, you’d never leave.” My breath hitched, and something cold and sharp settled in my chest. He knew I'll never leave. So he chose to keep it away from me? I wanted to ask him, but he started explaining everything bit by bit even before I

♛ Aurora: His face contorted, and for a moment, he looked as wrecked as I felt. “I searched for you, and it took me months to find out you were in Chicago. I wanted to come back but I couldn't bring myself to. Because I thought you’d hate me.” I let out a choked laugh. “And if I did? If I hated you? Wouldn’t it have been better to hear it from me instead of assuming? Instead of letting me rot in my own self-blame?” He inhaled sharply, his hands threading through his rain-soaked hair. “Fuck, I was afraid. Afraid that after everything, you had finally moved on. That you were happy without me. And I didn’t want to destroy that.” I shook my head. “You never even gave me the chance to decide for myself. Everything you've done was just you deciding it would be the best for me! you never asked me about anything. Was our love that fickle to you?” I wanted to stop crying but I couldn't. The tears rolled out of my eyes like a dam that had been broken. I took a step back. Another

♞ Adrian: “If you had taken my advice back then, I promise you that none of this would have been happening.” Dmitri clicked his tongue and shook his head in disappointment before he sat down and relaxed on the couch. Trust him to know the right time to bring up a fucking conversation. I spared him a glance from where I sat, but he simply shrugged it off. “Don’t give me that look. You know I’m right.” “Maybe you should shut up for once,” I muttered, bringing the rim of the glass to my lips before swallowing the bitter contents in one go. The burn in my throat was nothing compared to how dejected and wasted I felt at the moment. The last look in Rory's eyes kept haunting me, barely giving me a chance to think of anything else. After she ran away from me, I walked back under the rain to her apartment. I could hear her sobs from inside but couldn't do a fucking thing. I couldn't even go home straight to my place, so I crashed at Leon's new place which was around the

♞ Adrian: He spared me a glance, and clicked his tongue. “You reek of alcohol and I don't like the smell of them.” He complained. “By tomorrow my car would be smelling just like you… alcohol and whiskey.” A visible frown curved up my brows, “Are you calling me a drunk?” He didn't even look at me as he answered, “Well, perhaps you didn't realize but right now you reek so much of it that you could be taken as one.” I was about to say something, but then a sharp pang seared through my head, silencing me. I pressed my lips into a thin line and instead laid my head back in the headrest of the passenger seat. “Talk back at me this way when I'm fully sober later today.” Dmitri simply chuckled and kept driving. When we finally reached my place, Dmitri pulled into the gate and turned to me as he pulled the car to a stop, “Are you sure you can make it inside?” I scoffed, pushing the car door open and stepping outside, “I’m not a child, Dmitri.” “Could have fooled m

♛ Aurora: “So what would you like to have? Tea to calm your nerves? Coffee to make you stronger for the day, or just the usual yogurt?” Trish asked the moment I walked inside the kitchen. I glanced down at the time in my wristwatch, it was already 10 A.M. I had slept in and she didn't bother to wake me up at all. “I'm not hungry, Trish. I'll have just water. And besides I'm already late.” I said as I walked past her and headed straight to the refrigerator. “Oh, no, no, no. You would not be leaving this house until you have something. Water would not be enough to put you through the day. I made some pancakes and there’s honey over there. If you aren't hungry for pancakes, that's completely fine. There’s bacon and eggs too. If you don't want all that, that's fine, but then you'll have toast instead.” She drew out the last statement with a smile. I shook my head and brought out water from the refrigerator. I could clearly tell what Trish was trying to do, to take my mind

♞ Adrian: My fist tightened around his collar, and his fingers gripped my hands, trying to pry them off. “Can you fucking tell me what this is about before choking me to death?” Gabriel’s sharp eyes met mine. “I deserve to at least know what I've done wrong this time.” “Killing you here and right now would just make everything better for me, you know?” I asked, watching the change in his expression. I had received a call from Giovanni after I left Rory with my Dmitri and Leon yesterday to attend a meeting. I wasn't sure how he got it done, but he had somehow figured out that my step-brother was also pulling the reins behind the collapse at the site. Why he was doing it? I had no fucking idea. But he’ll eventually tell me if he wants to live. “How long did you think it would take me to find out you are somehow connected to Vincent Rein?” I asked him, tightening my hands around his collar. ♛ Aurora: I stood by the door, my gaze remained on Trish as I noticed her brows pulled together. After a moment of silence, she finally looked up and her gaze landed straight on me. I glanced down at my phone in her hands. What message was sent? If it was one from an unknown number, then I wouldn't know what to say to her, and Trish would certainly demand an explanation. She wouldn't be happy that I kept it from her. My throat felt tight as I took a step further, and towards where she was standing, “I promise I can explain.” I dived face first into trying to clear the air. Trish narrowed her eyes at me, “Rory…” her words trailed and she glanced down at the phone again, before looking up. Her eyes watched me carefully, and she dropped my phone to the bed, before letting out a deep restrained breath, “Rory, you need to tell me what's going on.” I swallowed the lump stuck to my throat, and my fingers tightened around my tooth brush which was in my hand. “Talk to me before I jump i

♞ Adrian: I slid my car keys into my pants pocket before looking up at the mansion before me. A deep breath escaped my lips and I ran my fingers through my neatly brushed hair, before making my way inside. I hated this house. I didn't like coming here. Neither do I like the memories it pulls coming here. My father’s message had been unclear to me. All it read was: 'Come home, Adrian. There’s something we need to discuss.' When I read the message first thing I woke up this morning, I almost canceled on it. My intention was to cover it up with me being out on a buisness meeting. But at the last moment, I decided to just come around. Besides, I had a certain other business to handle with someone in this house. The butler opened the door the second I stepped onto the porch, like he'd been waiting all day. “Welcome home.” He greeted with a nod, which I returned before he glanced inside, “They’re in the lounge.” I almost asked where else would they be? Probably perched on those pret

♛ Aurora: My gaze trailed over to my bedroom ceiling as I blinked my eyes open. I stretched over my bed and released a deep breath, before reaching out for my phone which I left on the bedside table. “You’re glowing.” I froze at the voice, my brows creased and I blinked, disoriented for half a second before I realized Trish was standing in the doorway of my bedroom, her brows raised in something close to amusement. She was dressed in her usual oversized red sweater and leggings, hair up in a messy bun, clutching a mug that smelled like tea. “Excuse me?” I asked, sitting up a little straighter on the bed. I glanced around the room, before my gaze trailed back to her. Events from last night cut through my thoughts and I closed my eyes for a brief second, trying to recall how it had ended and how I had gotten back into my room. I stretched my arms and felt a sharp pain on my shoulder blade, a wince escaped my lips and I brushed my fingers on my shoulder. It was at that

His confession wasn't just words to me… it was raw, trembling truth. I couldn't help but turn to glance at him. And what I saw in his eyes was vulnerability that left no room for armor. Everything he said was nothing but what he felt. I looked at him deeply, the same way his dark eyes stared at me deeply. His jaw was tight, like he was holding himself back from saying more. His fingers twitched at his thigh. He wasn't comfortable in the silence, he wanted me to say something. Anything. I swallowed the lump stuck in my throat, because something inside me was caving in. I hated him. I resented him. I despised him. But I loved him. I missed him. I ached for him. All at once. Adrian’s eyes dropped to my lips, then back to my eyes, his chest rising and falling like he was trying to breathe me in. “Say someth

My brows pulled together, “Who?” He shook his head and ran his fingers through it, ruffling it before finally saying, “I don't want to get you involved in all of these.” His heavy stare fell on me. My frown deepened, “I'm already involved in it. Right from the moment someone decided to sabotage my work at the site. So what do you mean?” “Things run deeper than that. Other than the fact that you have someone who’s trying to sabotage your work because they have a vendetta against you. There’s also someone out there who is working with them because they have a vendetta against me.” I let his words settle in for a moment. My brows creased as I slowly understood the meaning behind his words. Someone was coming after me because of him? “Who?” I couldn't help but ask. “I can't tell you.” “Why?” He shook h

His dark rimmed eyes fell on me and a small smile tipped his lips, “Rory,” he called out. “Adrian,” I muttered in a low voice. He stood there, tall and calm, holding a paper bag in one hand, and a box of what I presumed to be sweets and chocolates in another hand. His tie was loose, shirt wrinkled from what must have been a long day, his hair was disheveled and covering part of his face. His eyes softened the second he saw my face. “I brought dinner,” he said, lifting the bag slightly. “And desserts” He added softly as he raised the other hand a little “You’re late.” I said as I briefly glanced at the time on my phone. It was already a couple of minutes after 11.
