75. A Tapestry of Torment

Jacob’s POV

Her head shook gently, a negation that was more a refusal to admit than a denial of the truth. She stubbornly averted her gaze, her voice a flat monotone that hung heavily in the air between us "No… I just... I didn't want you to catch the flu too. We shouldn't have..."

Abruptly, she rose from the couch, her body language screaming a desire to flee. My own reflexes kicked in and I rose too, reaching out to gently but firmly encase her delicate shoulders, preventing her escape.

The magnitude of her lie was like a physical blow, a punch that tore through my defenses and straight into my heart. It was the first time I had caught her in a lie, and the impact was devastating, shaking the foundations of the trust we had been building.

"Don't" I implored, my voice echoing the ache in my heart "Please, don't lie to me"
