View MoreMy stepfather’s cold eyes bore into mine, unmoved.
“Give me another chance!” I pleaded, my voice cracking with desperation.
“I know I failed before, but I’ve learnt from my mistakes.” I pleaded again, my words tumbling out in a rush. ”I’ve changed, I swear, give me another chance.”
“Hmmm.” He leans back in his seat, His expression thoughtful.
“I don’t doubt that you’re a changed person,” His voice measured “My priority is, and always will be, the company’s well-being.” he said with a serious look on his face.
“I know, all I’m asking for is”…
“Enough! I’ve heard you.” “you may leave now”. I rose, relief washing over me “I won’t let you down a second time,” I promised.
As I turned to leave, his words halted me. “Your decisions nearly ruined the life of this company” He said as I made for the door, “If you take one wrong step, you’re out for real this time!”
Reginald Owen wasn’t the one to mince words or make idle threats, I needed no interpreter to let me know that he was serious. I took a deep breath, the weight of his warning settling heavy on my shoulders.
With a quiet nod, I let myself out of his study.
“How did it go?” My best friend’s eager voice screamed through the phone. “What did he say?” I took in a deep breath “chill girl, my pleadings worked. I won’t be foolish enough to allow anything ruin my family’s company and reputation again!” As I spoke, my heavy breathing was audible over the phone. And I meant it this time, I did not spend one year of my life in a strange city all to make the same mistake again.
“Your stepfather’s punishment was harsh, abandoning you for a whole year because of a mistake, if you ask me that was pretty extreme, besides it wasn’t your fault.”
I could hear the smirk in her voice, I sighed, ”You don’t understand Lexi,” I said, my voice laced with exhaustion, the weight of my mistakes still heavy on my shoulders. she has no idea what I put the company through, from second-ranked to nearly bankrupt in one year, It is a mystery that the company survived.
“Don’t you think he overreacted?” she continued “you’ve done so much for the company, after all.” I sighed again “you don’t get it, Lexi. I deserved that punishment. I needed that time to confront the consequences of my actions, to realize the destruction my decisions caused. And I won’t make the same mistakes again.”
“I’m glad you’re back, and wiser. We’ll get through this together.” she said assuredly.
Her words were all I needed in the moment, at least I’m not alone. “Thank you.” I said and ended the call.
I can’t wait to reclaim my position in the family business, and of course have my revenge on Leonard Mckelis, The cunning heir to the MK group empire who manipulated me using our relationship to gain access to my stepfather’s confidential documents. He exposed and falsified sensitive information, then publicly thanked me on TV for generously helping him to rise above his enemies.
My phone vibrated, I picked it up to an I*******m notification, which read; happy one year anniversary to us, how time flies quickly… The bastard is celebrating his one year anniversary already! And he had the guts to tag me in his post.
Fury coursed through my veins as I bit my lower lip, my anger reigniting. The painful memories came flooding back. This was the same man who had manipulated and publicly humiliated me. To make matters worse, I recalled the latest news: Leonard’s elevation to Acting CEO of his father’s company.
I buried my face in my hands, tears streaming down my cheeks like acid rain, “Life is unfair!” I screamed, the sound echoing off the walls, everything seem to mock me – Leonard’s success, his family’s prosperity, all built on the ruins of my trust. My mind recoiled in agony, relieving the memories I’d desperately tried to erase. The leaked documents, the public shaming, the crushing betrayal.
“No!” I said aloud bracing myself. “Not now, not ever.” I wiped away my tears, my resolve hardened. This was not the time for weakness. I had to show my stepfather that I’d transformed- that the naïve, gullible girl of few years past was gone. I’ll rebuild his trust, shatter doubts and forge a new path.
I walked boldly into my stepfather’s company. One week after our meeting, His secretary’s text had summoned me to his office.
As I stepped into the building, all heads turned. The room fell silent, except for the murmurs and whispers that swirled around me like a vortex.
“I heard the CEO has finally forgiven her of all she did in the past”
“How could he let her back, she practically ruined the company’s reputation!”
“What is she doing here?”
“…of course the media won’t forget!”
Their words stung, piercing my confidence. My feet suddenly grew weak as some of their comments filled my ears, I managed to get into the elevator while maintaining a straight face, once I got in, I exhaled pressing the button for the top floor.
I took in deep breathe, said a short prayer before opening the door to my step father’s office, “He has been expecting you” blurted Vasquez my step father’s most trusted bodyguard
“well I’m here now” he scoffed and led the way to the CEO’s desk at the far corner of the enormous office.
My stepfather and CEO of the company was engrossed in a business call when I stepped into his office, as I moved closer to him, he gestured for me to take a seat. thirty minutes later, he finally ended the call and turned to face me “The board were skeptical about my decision to let you back as the Chief Operating Officer of the company” but as the CEO of the company I guess it’s right for everyone to understand who’s in charge’ he says with a proud look on his face.
“I assured them that you won’t let the company down and would strictly perform your duties now, don't make me chew back my words!” he says looking at me sternly, his dark eyes piercing through me as though in search of something, perhaps a reason to doubt.
“I won’t disappoint you or the board,” I vowed, my voice firm. His expression was unreadable. “You have no choice.” The silence that followed was oppressive, weighing heavily on me for what felt like eternity. Ten agonizing minutes ticked by.
Then without warning, his dry smile twisted his face. “Welcome back.”
Michael's POV *****I woke up with a slight headache on the couch in my living room wondering how I ended up there. I yawned loudly and stood up to stretch, still wearing my outfit from the previous night. My gaze fell on Alex who was snoring peacefully at the far end of the couch, he must have overslept. I tried to recall the time we had left the bar the night before, but my memory was hazy.Shrugging it off, I focused on getting to work on time. Punctuality was my top priority. With my headache intensifying with each passing moment, I slowly made my way to where Alex was sleeping and shook him awake, he sprang up immediately as if he had only been resting his head.“Good morning sir” He said standing up to stretch. “I'll go get ready for work.” He said and proceeded to the door. I yawned again, trying to shake off the feelings of fatigue. How much had I drunk the night before? While getting dressed for work, I felt tired and exhausted at the same time, it was odd that I had a fuzz
I’m Gabrielle, gab for short.” The other girl flashed her even white teeth, and made a 360 turn. Who asked her to?“Yes?” Alex frowned.“Would you mind, if we join you?”Alex looked around, checking for a vacant table. He cleared his throat and pointed to one. “There are still a lot of vacant tables around.”Both girls flushed and then giggled, all the time eyeing at me.“Actually, um… we just wanted to introduce ourselves.” The one called rose, spoke upthere was no response or nudge from either of us.“Um…. we’re wondering if you could hang out with us later. Go to the mall, or do fun stuffs or something.”“We’re very busy girls. We have a lot of work to do. We don’t have the time for that.” I heard Alex rejecting their offer lightly“That’s soo boring. Whatever” The girls stormed out furiously. When the girls left, I was back to my worried state. I was running out of time. The fact that my grandfather intends to act as a matchmaker scared and annoyed me at the same time. I wasn't i
Michael's POV I settled into my lounge, dressed in a white robe and stared directly at the serene mini beach beyond my window. The sounds of gentle waves crashing against the shore was perfect for my afternoon relaxation. I was passively sipping a cold juice as I tried to relax my mind.I had cancelled all my appointments and meetings for the day, they could wait. I needed to get my acts together, coupled with the fact that I was running out of time. I needed to clear my head. After a 30-minute respite, I retreated to my bathroom for a refreshing afternoon bath, after which I headed downstairs for lunch. I was going to wait for Alex to join me for lunch. He had called an hour ago. It's been an hour, 30 minutes already and no sign of him. I realized he was running late, annoyed, so I decided to dine alone. Hours passed, and Alex finally showed up armed with all kinds of excuses. I waved at him to indicate I was not ready to hear them, all I wanted to hear was the information he had
It has been three weeks since my suspension, and I was spending most of the time, curled up in my bed, eyes glued to my laptop screen, as I scrolled through social media.I stocked up on snacks and settled in for a marathon session of scrolling and reacting to funny videos of cats, trendy outfits and celebrity gossip.I was still bored! I guess stalking celebrities has no fun in it.I had just reacted to a random post, when a familiar face popped up on my screen- mine. It caught me off guard, I widened my eyes as I read through the post. The account user had just published an article, where I had admitted to the assault on video. I regretted reading through the comment section, with people accusing me of being a monster and a desperate maniac.I consoled myself with the fact that it was just an online drama and nothing more. “Can't they just move on?” I muttered to myself.“It's been three weeks for crying out loud” I scrolled past the article, feeling unease, But then I saw another
Her secretary knocked on the door briefly before entering.“Miss Alexandra, your father will like to see you now” she saidLexi smiled at me and rose from her seat” “I’ll be back in a jiffy” Michael’s POVI was growing impatient with the scene unfolding before me. The girl was hesitating to enter the elevator, was she afraid of me and my men?I tried to sound as friendly as possible, to put her at ease. “Aren’t you coming in?” She mumbled a few words and reluctantly stepped into the elevator. Her fear was palpable, which was not unusual, although most women I encountered would prefer I noticed them or give them attention, but this girl seemed desperate to avoid me. what’s with the whole face cap?I studied her briefly, taking in the way she stood rigidly, facing the door, her shoes tapping nervously on the floor. Her discomfort was almost… intriguing. As I continued to observe her I wondered why she would intentionally make herself uncomfortable, I couldn’t stop looking at her. Ther
“Turn around, I want to see your face”He spoke authoritatively. I prayed for the ground to swallow me, or for me to just vanish into thin air! Anything at all!I remained frozen. Rooted at the spot as my body shook with fear.“Ma’am? We need you to turn around.” Another voice spoke up.I cleared my throat, adopting a slightly masculine tone. “I’m sorry, but you don’t know-”The elevator dinged, the door slid open, we had arrived at the top floor. I immediately hurried out, running as fast as I could, falling multiple times. All that mattered was that he was no longer in sight!I collided with a tall, suited man, sending us both to stumble “Watch it!” he exclaimed, catching his balance.“sorry” I muttered. The man shot me a disapproving glance before moving on.As I reached the secretary’s desk, I took a breath to calm my racing heart. “Good morning ma’am” “Did you book an appointment?” she asked.“Hey, it’s me” I spoke calmly, raising my face cap slightly enough for her to recognize
*****It had been a week since my public apology to Victor Adams. As part of the company’s effort to ‘clear the air,’ I was temporarily suspended from my duties. With nothing much to do, aside from scrolling mindlessly on social media and watching reels, I decided it was high time I paid my best friend a visit at her father’s company. Lexi had very free time for girls hangout and social activities, she was a typical busy woman. She was in every way the opposite of me. While I had recently been involved in scandal, Lexi was a paragon of success. She consistently secured major deals for her company, had received numerous awards at buisness conferences, and had maintained a spotless reputation over the years. Before the scandal, Lexi and I were inseperable, two best friend making waves in the business world. However, our paths had diverged since the betrayal by Leonard. One of Lexi’s unique qualities was her captivating presence. Her bright smile, perfect teeth and effortless charm mad
Nora's POV“Girl, turn on the news! You have to watch this!” Lexi’s voice burst through the phone as soon as I responded. I was in my room, about to get dressed for work, when she called.I, quickly grabbed my Ipad and searched for the most current news. My heart racing. It didn’t take long to find the headline. My eyes widened in disbelief as I read the words. The Ipad slipped from my fingers, and in seconds I was gasping for air.“Are you there? Have you seen it?” she screamed through the phone. “Y-yes” I stuttered, trying to find my voice.“How dare he accuse you of assault!” “And to think that his company believes such lies is outrageous!” “Are you alright?” I tried to response, but the words caught in my throat. I was still struggling to breath.“Nora?”“Are you there?” “Lexi,I-i have to go now” I finally managed to find my voice, though it was shaking. I hung up the phone, turned on the airplane mode and quickly dressed for work. The company won’t allow me to face charges
I turned to face Alex “You knew about this? You could have said something!” “I had no choice sir.” I clenched my fist. There was no use getting mad at AlexI made a resolved look at my grandfather “well, I won’t have you run my life for me, I won’t go on any dates.” I said with every resolution in my breath. He chuckled slightly “I guess the company isn’t as precious to you as I thought”.My face fell. I’m screwed! My grandfather sure knows how to get to me, without doing much!He knows how hard I’ve worked to maintain the company and my contributions to its growth since he retired. My grandfather could go any length to get what he want, but he went too far this time.“Seems like you don’t have a choice, boy.” He said, breaking the silence. His cold eyes held mine for an uncomfortable moment. We locked eyes for a while, as though ready to strike, until he finally turned to leave. This can’t be it! This can’t be my fate. I can’t let him have his way!“Fine, give me six months to fi
