Adeline
I set the table for two, even though I knew better. The clock on the wall ticked steadily, its sound echoing in the silent kitchen. The aroma of roasted chicken filled the room, a blend of herbs and spices that I’d hoped would be enticing enough to lure Xander home for dinner. But I knew it wouldn’t work. It hadn’t in years. “Why do you bother, Adeline?” I muttered to myself, shaking my head. “He’s not going to walk through that door.” I took a seat at the table, staring at the empty chair across from me. I could almost see him there, his tall frame and stern expression, but it was just a trick of the mind, a ghost of what never really was. Xander had always been indifferent to me in our marriage. He barely acknowledged my presence, his attention constantly absorbed by work or his own thoughts. In the beginning, I had tried to reach out, to break through the wall he had built around himself, but over time, I realized my efforts were in vain. He didn't love me. He never had. I sighed, picking at my food with my fork. “Maybe it’s me,” I mused aloud, feeling a pang of self-pity. “Maybe I’m just not worth the effort.” The thought made me chuckle softly, my chest rumbling. I knew it wasn’t about me. Xander had his own demons, his own reasons for keeping me at arm’s length. But knowing that didn’t make it hurt any less. I glanced at the clock again. It was almost eight. By now, he was probably still at the office, buried in paperwork or attending some endless meeting. I had stopped expecting him to call long ago. He never did. Why would he? I was just the woman he had married out of convenience, not love. “Why do you even cook for him, Adeline?” I asked myself. “He doesn’t care.” I looked down at the plate in front of me, the roasted chicken and vegetables looking less appetizing by the second. “Because you have to eat too,” I answered my own question, pushing the food around with my fork. “And because some part of you still hopes.” I took a small bite, chewing slowly. The food was good, I had to admit. Cooking had always been my way of coping, of finding control in a life that felt increasingly out of my grasp. It was my therapy. I couldn’t help but think about the early days of our marriage. Back then, I had been naïve, believing that I could break through Xander’s coldness, that my love would be enough for both of us. But now, those memories felt like a joke. It was a reminder of my foolishness. I had long since given up on the idea of us sharing a life together. We were just two people living under the same roof, bound by a piece of paper but nothing else. But to my astonishment, as I sat at the table, ready to resign myself to another solitary meal, I heard the door open. There was no way in hell. My heart skipped a beat, and I turned, hardly daring to believe what I was seeing. There stood Xander, his tired eyes meeting mine with an intensity I hadn't seen in a long time. A rush of joy flooded through me. Maybe my efforts had finally made a difference. Maybe he had realized how much I missed him, how much I longed for just a moment of his time. With a smile spreading across my face, I rushed to greet him. "Xander! You're home early," I exclaimed, unable to contain my happiness. He gave me a small, tight-lipped smile, but it didn't quite reach his eyes. "Yes, I had some things to take care of." I didn't care about the reasons; all that mattered was that he was here. I ushered him to the table, eager to share the meal I had prepared with so much love. But my excitement was short-lived. As I began to serve dinner, Xander stopped me with a raised hand. "There's no need for that, Adeline," he said, his voice flat. Confusion crept into my heart, stealing away the joy I had felt just moments ago. "But... I thought you came home to eat," I stammered, my voice faltering. Xander shook his head, a heavy sigh escaping his lips. "No, I came home to talk." He reached into his briefcase and pulled out a stack of papers, placing them on the table in front of me. I scanned the sheets, and my eyes widened as I realized what they were. A freaking divorce agreement! My hands trembled as I reached out to touch the papers, as if by doing so, I could make them disappear, make this nightmare end. But they were real, as real as the sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. "Xander, what is this?" I whispered, my voice barely audible above the pounding of my heart. He looked at me, his gaze steady. "I think you know what it is, Adeline. We both know this marriage isn't working anymore." Shock coursed through me, leaving me numb and speechless. How could he do this? How could he come home, give me hope, only to shatter it into a million pieces? Tears welled up in my eyes, blurring my vision. "But... but I thought... I thought maybe things could be different," I choked out, the words catching in my throat. Xander's expression softened, just a fraction. "I'm sorry, Adeline. But it's time for both of us to move on." "Xander, please," I pleaded, my voice trembling. "Can't we talk about this? Can't we try to work things out?" He hesitated, his eyes flickering with a glimpse of remorse. "Adeline, nothing will ever change. We're just... not meant to be together." His words felt like a knife to my heart, each one slicing deeper than the last. "But I love you," I whispered. Xander sighed, his gaze softening with a hint of pity. "Adeline. I'm sorry, but love isn't always enough." “I can't believe this is happening," I murmured, more to myself than to him. Xander reached out, his hand hovering over mine before he pulled back. "I know it's hard, Adeline. But it's for the best. For both of us." I shook my head, unable to accept what he was saying. "I can't sign these papers," I said. I couldn't understand why, couldn't fathom how everything had unraveled so quickly. With trembling hands, I gathered the strength to confront Xander, to demand answers to questions that seemed to multiply with every beat of my heart. "Xander, please," I implored, my voice trembling. "Why are you doing this? Why now?" But he remained silent, his expression unreadable. "I deserve an explanation, Xander," I pressed on, my voice growing more insistent. "We owe each other that much." Still, he refused to meet my gaze. It was as if he had already checked out, as if the man I had loved, the man I had hoped to love, was no longer there. "Why won't you talk to me?" I demanded, my voice rising with frustration. Finally, he spoke, his voice cool and detached. "Adeline, if you sign the papers, I'll make sure you're taken care of. You’lol be compensated with 5,000,000 dollars.” His words hit me like a punch to the gut, knocking the wind out of me. Was that all I was worth to him? A sum of money, a transaction to be negotiated and settled? "I don't want your money, Xander," I replied. "I want... I want us to find a way back to each other." “If you think that 5 million is not enough for you, you can ask my assistant to give you a satisfactory number.” He raised his voice and said impatiently. And with that, he turned and walked away, leaving me alone with the evidence of rejection, the divorce papers.AdelineThe night passed in a haze of restless tossing and turning. Sleep denied me of it's embrace, slipping through my fingers like grains of sand. I couldn't bear the thought of signing those divorce papers, couldn't fathom the idea of giving up on us without a fight. After everything, despite the indifference that had always been in our marriage from the start, I still loved Xander. And I couldn't let him go without at least trying to understand why he was so determined to leave. As the first light of dawn filtered through the curtains, I made a decision. I would go to Xander, confront him, demand answers that he had so callously refused to give me. I needed to know why, needed to understand what had made him do this. Although he has been cold to me since marriage, he has never mentioned divorce. I need to figure out why he suddenly asked for divorce. I dressed quickly, my hands shaking with nerves. I didn't bother with breakfast, couldn't stomach the thought of food when my
Adeline “Sit down, Adeline,” My father said. Thank you to him for relieving my embarrassment. I sat mechanically on the couch with my mind blank. Sasha was seated right beside Xander, his arm draped over her. "Adeline! So lovely to see you again," she trilled. I knew it was all a performance. That sweet smile, the wide, welcoming arms - none of it reached her eyes. “Sasha, when did you come back? Xander, why are you here with Sasha?” When I finished asking, I realized that my voice was hoarse. No one can remain calm after seeing her husband and sister show intimacy. “Adeline, don’t be rude to Sasha,” Xander said. Am I rude? I just asked normally that he was so protective of my sister and neglected his wife. If he has been as cold as he has been in the past few years, I can live with it. But seeing him so protective of Sasha, I couldn’t stand it anymore. “Am I rude? She stole my husband and flirted with my husband.” I spat, unable to hold back the venom in my voice. Sasha ga
AdelineAs I stepped through the front door of the house that Xander and I once shared, a chill swept over me. The place now felt like an empty shell.I wandered through the rooms. The silence was deafening, broken only by the hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen. I found myself standing in front of the dining table, my fingers tracing the grain of the wood.It was here that I had spent countless evenings waiting for Xander to come home, dinners growing cold.I sighed. "This isn't my home anymore," I whispered to myself.I moved to the bedroom, the room we had once shared. The bed, neatly made. I sat on the edge."Why did it have to end like this?" I asked the empty room. There was no answer, of course. There never was.The closet stood half-empty, Xander's clothes noticeably absent. I pulled open a drawer, finding it filled with my things – neatly folded, untouched. It felt like our marriage, my presence carefully contained and largely ignored.I wandered back into the living room
XanderThe embossed invitation felt slick with a kind pressure in my hand. The designer hosting the event was a top name in the industry, the kind of person every trendy woman like Sasha, my girlfriend, worshipped. Sasha had been raving about the jewelry for weeks, especially the new piece Adie Luxe was set to unveil. Personally, I couldn't care less about jewelry or fashion. When the invitation arrived, I wanted to skip it entirely, but Sasha wouldn’t hear of it.“Xander, you don’t understand,” she had said for the hundredth time, practically bouncing with excitement. “Adie Luxe is releasing a new piece! We have to go. I need to see the face behind the brand. Everyone’s talking about it. This is the biggest event of the season! Did you know their last piece sold for half a million at auction? That’s how influential they are. Just imagine seeing their work up close!”I nodded absentmindedly, her words blending into the background. I didn't share her enthusiasm for jewelry or fashion
ADELINE ‘S POV"Adeline," I caught a hint of pain in his voice , and my heart skipped a beat. I glared at him as he spoke, and my face hardened. I feigned confusion, and I tilted my head to the side. He moved closer, and I raised my hands to stop him. "Adeline, it's me, Xander your–" He stopped halfway as he tried to find the appropriate word. "Ex-husband," He completed. I reached out my hands for a handshake, and I smiled at him as he took it. His features brightened up, and I finally spoke. "It seems you are confusing me for someone else," His smile disappeared, and at the corner of my eyes, I saw Sasha throwing death glares at me. "But I do hope you find her. Please enjoy the night," I dismissed as I pulled my hands away. I walked away from where I stood to find my assistant."Adeline!" A voice called, and I turned my head to see the head of one of the biggest magazines in the country. "Mrs Claudia!" I beamed happily as the woman pulled me in for a French kiss. "O
AdelineI stood close to the window as I took in the morning mist and the strong smell of coffee and vanilla that filled my office. My office was at the top of my building, and I took in the view before me. I had the best one on the entire floor. My legs were still a bit sore from yesterday. Wearing heels around the hall for hours was a hassle.I tried not to think about what happened with him last night. I didn't expect them to show up at the party last night. Who would have thought he was interested in jewelry. I had a lot of deals at the opening, and a lot of people offered collaborations with me, a ton of good brands. And I couldn’t be more excited. At least I know I will be fine until the end of the year before I reveal another rare gem.I heard a knock on the door before the door was pushed open, and Bea, my assistant, walked in with a box in her hands."Sorry for being late," She replied as she placed the box on the table."What kept you? Traffic?" I asked as I turned ar
XANDER'S POVI watched as she walked away from us. My hands still gripped Sasha's hands as I felt a part of me walk away with her.Sasha pulled at my clothes, and I felt a surge of irritation at her, as she made me lose the opportunity to speak to her.I grabbed her gently to the parking lot where one of my cars was parked, and my driver was waiting for us to come. "Why don't you go home to rest? It has been a stressful day, and you said you don’t like this year's review," I said to her, and she refused. "Are you trying to send me away so you can find a way to go back to that whore? Why are you behaving this way? Why are you trying so hard to get her attention? You rejected her years ago, so why all the interest in her all of a sudden?" She pestered me with questions, and it felt more like a reality check than questions. Personally, I had no idea what was wrong with myself and why I was suddenly interested in Adeline. "I never said I wanted to go talk to her. She is probably g
Adeline I grabbed my coat from the hanger and dialed the driver's number to have him wait for me downstairs. Despite my reluctance, I had to go home to have dinner. My high heels echoed through the empty hall, and I stretched and got into the car. "Where are we going?" The driver asked when he saw my reflection in the mirror. "Take me to my father's house." I nodded in response. My father's house, not my home. From the day I left five years ago, I knew that no one in this home welcomed me. And now, my father called me to come home for dinner. I wonder how they will react to seeing their daughter after five years of absence. A few minutes later we arrived at the house. I asked the driver to go back first, I had my plan. Looking at the familiar house in front of me, I pulled my bag closer to myself and walked to the door. I rang the doorbell, and when it rang a second time, my father poked his head out. He pulled me into a hug, "Adeline, my daughter. I miss you so much, we
ADELINE’S POV***I woke up slowly, feeling so groggy and disoriented. My body was so heavy and there was a dull pain in my side. I did not know why but the pain had my head hammering. I blinked against the bright light in the room and that was when I realised that I was not alone. A lot of questions ran through my mind as I wondered what had happened and why I was here. Someone was sitting next to me and there seemed to be a shocked look on their face when our eyes met. "Adeline?" The familiar voice came through. It was soft, like silk. I turned my head and sock Xander sitting right by my side. I felt an instant wave of relief and my heart swelled. I was so scared before this happened, so scared that something bad had happened to him but seeing him right here with me did a very good job with pushing off the pain for a little while. He was here with me, alive and okay. I blinked back the tears that were already starting to form. And that was the moment everything slowly started to c
FLORAL.I could barely breathe as I gripped the steering wheel, my knuckles were already white. I knew what Tristan was planning and I couldn't let it happen because it opposed everything that we worked for. Yes, I knew he wanted to take revenge on those who put him in prison but if he was going to do that, he should go face Adeline's old man, not Adeline. She was innocent and did nothing to him. I was not going to let him hurt her, not after I'd met her. Of course she was going to be a problem if I wanted to get to Xander but she was innocent and she was a good woman. I had to stop Tristan no matter what it was going to take. The streets blurred past me as I sped down the road. My heart was pounding so loud in my ears that I drowned out everything else. Tristan couldn't kill Adeline. Not like this. Not over some twisted sense of revenge. I didn't know how I ended up in this mess. It wasn't supposed to be my fight. But here I was driving, driving madly towards the one person who cou
ADELINE'S POV***My hands wouldn’t stop shaking as I dialed my grandfather's number. I could barely think straight now as my thoughts were all over the place. It felt like my mind was running a hundred miles per hour but I wasn't going anywhere. What was I going to do now that it was clear Xander was in danger. I didn't even know where I was going to start from. How the hell was I going to find him? And it was clear from the foregoing that Matt had had the one behind this whole thing. He had abducted Xander and his phone was enough proof for that. He had also put on a mask to make me think that was Xander. That son of a bitch really did all this only to die a very disgraceful death. That was exactly what he deserved. But what if he'd killed Xander? The thought brought back the fear that was already building up. I needed to do something, and I hoped my grandfather would be able to step in with his connections. If it didn't work then I had no idea what else would. All I could think ab
FLORAL’S POV***I didn't know Adeline was in the house when I stepped out of my room. The moment I saw her standing there, my heart dropped. I should have been more careful. What was I thinking, walking out like that? But it was too late-- she had already seen me so there was no need to do anything suspicious now. But maybe there was still time, I thought to myself, glancing at her before I tried to duck back into the shadows. However, Xander’s mother, ever the gracious host, was quick to introduce me once she noticed I was behind her. "Adeline, this is my daughter, Floral," she said, gesturing to me with a proud smile. "Floral doesn't come around often." Adeline turned to me, scanning my face for a second and I held my breath. This was very bad because if she ever got to remember who I was, that was if she didn't know already, I was doomed. My palms were starting to sweat as I braced myself for her reaction. Would she recognise me? Would she say something? But instead, she smiled
ADELINE’S POV***I couldn't stop thinking about Xander. He hadn't come back since the day he told me he was going to stay at his mom’s house and I was disturbed because it could be the place where all his problems had started. Him acting weird must have been from there. He had been complaining about his sister before he came back and then everything had changed. He rarely talked to me and now he no longer complained about her. A lot of things were going on that I should be told about. But nobody was saying anything and it worried me so much. I wished someone could just let me know what was happening. But Xander was the only person I could talk to. He was the only one who knew what his problem was. It wasn't like him to just disappear like this, especially now that there was nothing bothering him, well, nothing that I knew of. He should have checked in lately but I'd heard nothing. My heart felt heavy as I paced around the living room. If I hadn't called him yesterday to know if he
FLORAL’S POV***I watched from a distance as Matt got out of his car and entered the pub. My heart raced but I had to keep my composure because this was going to work. It was either this night or never. This was the moment I'd been waiting for. I needed to find out who he really was. I had suspected for a while that something was off about him, and now I was going to prove it. I quickly made my way to his car, careful not to draw attention. The street was quiet, and only the occasional sound of passing cars in the distance was the only thing I heard. I approached his car and glanced around to make sure no one was watching. Then, I reached into my bag and pulled out the small hidden camera I had planted earlier. I couldn't risk leaving it there for too long, just in case he checked his car for anything suspicious. My hands shook slightly as I retrieved the camera, but I was careful to keep my movements steady. Once I had it, I slipped it back in my bag and quickly walked away, blend
XANDER’S POV***I tried to move but my body would not cooperate because every inch of me was hurting and it was starting to make me feel very dizzy. I was very worried because I did not want to pass out here because nobody would see me if I needed medical attention so I had to fight off every form of hazy feeling until I was sure that I was ok. My arms, my legs, my ribs- they were all on fire. I could not remember the last time I had eaten because my stomach was already growling and I was too weak to care. But do you think that terrified me the most was the fact that the room was very dark and there was nobody around. I could only help but picture that I had been left alone in some kind of Warehouse to die. My heart pounded very fast when I thought of that and as much as I told myself that his Men could be outside, there was still a possibility that they had left me alone here to die. I didn't even know if it was day or night because time had lost its meaning. I had tried to escape
TRISTAN’S POV***The weight of everything that had happened finally stayed to lift lift from shoulders. Sasha was dead. The hit man had done his job perfectly as there was no trace or evidence of who had done it. I felt so relieved because with her gone, there was no one left to testify against me, no one who could point fingers if things went wrong. That was the hardest mission so I guessed the rest would be very easy from here onwards. Now, I just had to take care of Adeline and Xander, before I could disappear. My time was coming, and I couldn't wait for it. I smiled to myself as I thought of my plan. Once they are gone, I'd be free to leave this place. But in the meantime I had to control everything from the shadows. I was happy that I had the capable hands. Sometimes I wished that this was the last mission, but then I was reminded that it was time to put my head down and do the rest. There was no promise of a better future if the rest were still alive. Thankfully, I had it all
SASHA’S POV***I sat on the cold, hard bed in my cell, staring at the ceiling. It had been a long day, just like every other day in this place. The routine, the noise and the walls closing in on me felt unbearable but that morning, something changed. My mother called. I was surprised when the guard came to inform me that I had a call. I thought they had abandoned me, that she had left me here to rot and die just like my father had abandoned us. And I wouldn't blame her for what happened because she was just as miserable as I was. The guard escorted me out of myself and walked me to the phone stand. My heart was drumming when I picked it up. Has something bad happened? Or was she going to just tell me that the divorce had been finalised? If it was the latter, I didn't want to hear anything about it. Since my father had decided to give up on me, I didn't want anything to do with him again. I listened in on the phone and her voice came through. "Sasha, honey." Her voice was so sweet,
