Hetty
I'm sitting in the passenger seat if a lime green open back jeep holding a chocolate vanilla swirl ice cream cone, laughing as Eric sings in falsetto along with TSwift. He looks back at me grinning as he pulls the jeep into gear and pulls out of the parking lot."So how was school, kiddles?" he grins at me. My smile falls."Alright, I guess" he wrinkles his brow."Just alright? What's going on?""Just normal school stuff, ya know how it goes." He hums."Do I need to kick some adolescent butts? Let me know now before I'm a legal adult and can get in serious trouble for assaulting 13 year olds" always so protective."It's not that. It's the occupation preparation classes at school. Everyone's already got these big careers planned with their dream jobs. I find it hard to think about a career when all I want is to find my mate and have a few pups. Is that so pathetic?" He just laughs."Those are humans. All they want is money, you want more. You want love, a family, and community. That's not pathetic." I roll my eyes"Easy for you to say. Your path is already set, you're going to be the beta with Casey by your side." He just laughs some more."Your path is already set too little one, you just can't see it yet. Give it time." He looks away from the road to smile at me briefly. "You'll find your place, everyone does."We get back home where mom and dad greet me with bear hugs as I roll my eyes. Next thing I know we're sitting at the dinner table having dinner. How did we get here? The conversation flows smoothly, but I can't remember a single word that's been said. I blink and Eric is no longer Eric. Now he has Eli's face, but everyone still talks to him like Eric. I blink again and Dad's face is now the face of Leo from the forest. What is going on?Suddenly Dr. Krauft is standing behind Leo-Dad with a gun pointed at his head. I'm so confused, a sob escapes past my lips and I feel hot tears on my cheeks. I look over to mom to ask what's going on, but it's not mom anymore. I don't know who she is.I startle awake and find I'm staring into green eyes. The same eyes of Not Mom. "Easy girl, easy." She places her palm on my forehead. "Must have been a pretty nasty dream. Howling like that." I feel peace as she stares into my eyes.I deepen my breath to calm our racing heart. It was just a dream, but why was this lady in it? I'm still in Honour's form, what in the world is going on with us? I whimper and lay our head back down on top of our paws."Poor thing, you must be starved. Leo's just gone to get you some food. Do you like steak?" Our tail wags. "You sure are a smart one aren't you?" I roll our eyes. "Did you just..? I must be losing it" she chuckles."Jess! What are you doing? Are you trying to lose a hand?" I hear Leo shouting. She must be named Jess. I cook our head at Leo. Didn't he pet us earlier? I look back at Jess and move our muzzle to sniff just below her ear. She's pregnant, I can smell it. I close our eyes and listen closely. Thump thump thump thump thump. Sounds healthy.I move our nose down to her stomach and take a whiff as a tear slips out the corner of my eye. She smells like Mom did before that night. I keep my nose there for a while before I pull back to see her stunned face. I glance back over to Leo and he's just staring at me while holding a raw steak and a cup of blueberries. Honour would be drooling, I prefer my meats cooked, personally.I sniff the air, I am starving. When was the last time we ate? Leo shakes away his confusion and sets the food down next to the water dish. I shakily stand up and lay down to eat, our body is really weak right now. We must have run quite a bit after escaping Krauft's 'hospital'."Looks like you'll be our guest for the next little bit while we get your weight back up, then we can let you back out to find your family." Jess says while I eat. I stop eating and look at her from the side of our eye. "But what to call you while you're here." She's all smiles unaware of how my heart just shattered. I would love to find my family. I'm just 14 years old, trapped in my wolf form. I don't even know where I am, let alone how to get home nor what I'll find once I do. Honour would know what to do.I pull back from our food and sit up. I lift our paw till our longest claw is the only one touching the dirt beneath me. I carefully start to write out my name. H-E-T-T-Y. I look up to complete and utter dumb-foundation. We sit in silence for a good while as they process a wolf writing its own name for them.Leo clears his throat. "Ok. Hetty it is." Jess just blinks as she stares at my name in the dirt floor."I'll go get the log book." She looks up at Leo, clearly in shock and she stands and walks away."That's some trick you got there. Have anything else you want to add?" He tries to laugh it off. I just shake my head and he shuts up again.Jess returns with a syringe and a ledger. "Alrighty, first we'll add your name under the serial number for this tracker." She holds up a syringe. "Then we'll inject this just under your skin on your foreleg. Then we'll be able to see where you go, and be able to help you should you ever need help again."I look down at our leg where Krauft already placed a tracker. Crap, I forgot. He's going to come right here. These nice people are going to end up hurt. I look up in a panic."Don't worry, just a little pinch, you'll hardly feel it." She misunderstands my panic. I start nibbling the spot the tracker is just underneath the surface on my leg.Leo bands down to see what I'm doing. He rubs my leg and stiffens. "She's already got a tracker Jess. Didn't you notice?" She looks confused."I guess I must have missed it. They're not easy to find without knowing what to look for." She drops down next to Leo. "We'll get the serial number and find out who it belongs to." She shrugs. "That'll have to wait till morning, we can do this all later." She said before latching the gate before she and Leo disappeared back into the house.'Goodnight Hetty, see you tomorrow.' I mock them to myself. Oh well. Not much I can do about it for now. I climb back in the cot and close my eyes, ready to see what the morning brings.HettyI wake up to the sun in my face. I enjoy the peace. Not being poked, prodded, or tested. I can't remember the last time I was actually alone like this. Although,it feels extra lonely without Honour to talk to.Eventually Leo brings out a raw chicken breast and steamed carrots. Still better than plain oatmeal all day everyday. He doesn't really say anything and shortly after I hear the jeep's engine turn over. He must be headed to work, I wonder what he does. Dad was Beta so he didn't really have another 9 to 5 job, I can't really think of what jobs a human would have other than the ones I've seen on TV. Jess is obviously some sort of veterinarian, and with these large enclosures, chances are she's a wildlife vet.Not long after Leo is gone does Jess come out to check me again. She rubs a hand over our spine, our legs, and around our head and neck. Probably to check for parasites. I'd honestly be surprised if I didn't have a tick somewhere under all Honour's fur. Her hand stops o
LeoI didn't sleep. I stared at the ceiling while my mind raced. What kind of wolf is this? She is docile, yet intelligent. She can write her freaking name! She has a tag already. Is she some kind of hybrid? Not fully wolf, not fully dog? She is big. She could be a wolf crossed with one of those giant dog breeds. Who put that tag in her, and what roll have they played in her past? There's no droughts, plenty of prey, why is she so emaciated? That's the question that scares me the most. What kind of situation was she in and how did she get in it? Did someone cause this? Why?My alarm goes off and I get out of bed to get ready. My mind continues to race as I shower, get dressed, and start the Keurig. As I finish my coffee I move to the fridge to pull out some food for our guest, Hetty. My mind doesn't stop, it just keeps going in the same circle. Who? What? Why? How? I don't even remember taking the food out, or getting in my car to go to work.Work goes by normally until it comes to lu
JessSomeone obviously has had Hetty in their care. The quality of the tag and the encryption on it. She's been in someone's possession, but then why has she been starving? Why is she emaciated, why hasn't she been able to care for herself as she should? She seems scared that someone may be coming for her. I sit, stroking her fur while thinking about all of this until I hear a car pull up. It doesn't sound like Leo's jeep. I get up from my seat and Hetty whines. "It's alright sweetheart, it's probably just a friend or a patient." She continues to whine as I head towards the side yard to see who's here. "Can I help you?" I call out as I see a woman and two men walking from a black van to my front door. They all turn to me and the woman smiles."Hi! I'm Dr. Kaharu Carla Gainess. You can call me Carla." She smiles but there's fear in her eyes. I glance at the two men behind her. It's quite comical the juxtaposition between Dr. Gainess and the two men. She is a short, petite woman with

I still couldn't talk to Hetty, but I could observe.I watch as the two men with Carla, they smell strange, come to drag me away. Jess, being the kind and decent human being she is, tried to get them off of me. I had to fight back to protect her.I feel the tingle start, of course, our shifting is all sorts of a mess. I get free and am able to separate Jess from the one holding her back. I feel the pain in my bones as they prepare to change.I manage to get Jess into the shed and block her in while Carla begs me to calm down saying they can fix this, whatever this is. As if I am some wild animal that will destroy anyone around me. Eye roll. I feel the shift take over and find myself standing in Hetty's form before a confused and embarrassed Carla."You fix this by undoing it Carla. I can't contact Hetty.
HonourEvonleigh sniffs before she starts talking again. "Honour, it's gotten bad. Krauft got really angry after you left. He took it out mostly on Eli. He's been asleep for a couple days now. Whatever they've been doing has made his healing slow down. Wilder hasn't been out, he's been so down, really not himself. He's usually so happy and light you know?" She rambles on as she tries to think of details about what's been happening. "Honour? Where's Hetty?""She's here. I just can't talk to her for some reason. If her experience is like mine has been lately then she is present, just blocked from me.""That's not good. Krauft is getting closer isn't he?" She sounds scared. Evie still has 3 years before she can start to connect with her wolf."Seems that way." If Krauft is able to suppress a wolf before they become present Evie may never get to meet hers. When our human halfs turn 13, us wolves become what we call present. We can access our human's memories and start to share their mind
HonourI hold the pill cup in the palm of our hand and stare at them for a moment. One is a light purple color, one is black, and the third is white with a shimmer to it. "What are they supposed to do?" I shoot a glance at Carla."I don't know what all they have, but I know the white has silver in it. One of them probably has wolfsbane." She shifts her weight between her feet as she holds the bottle of water out for me.I tip the cup back before grabbing the bottle and taking a swallow."I know this isn't easy, Honour. Hopefully we can find a solution for Hetty.""Don't pretend this is for her good." I hiss at her, careful to not move my tongue too much. I'm so sick of these people and their self righteous beliefs. Carla just averts her eyes as she takes a deep breath before turning to leave."I'll see you tonight for your next dose." She leaves.I wait a few more moments for the coast to be clear before I slide the pills out from under our tongue. I glance at the camera in the corne
EvieI cried myself to sleep for the umpteenth night in a row. I've been here longer than Hetty and Eli. I barely remember a time before being here. Sometimes I dream of my mother. Her soft green eyes, framed by her light brown curls. The same eyes I see in the mirror. Her voice, a melody, she calls to me. I don't even remember her name. If it wasn't for Carla insisting we be called by our given names, I probably wouldn't even remember my own.I wake in a curled heap by my door as I blink the crust from my eyes. There's a knock on the door, that's Beck, one of the lab hands. He's learned to knock before bringing my breakfast since I tend to sleep against it. I roll over and whisper for him that I'm clear. He cracks the door and pokes his head in before pushing the door all the way open."Morning Eve. Brought your 'blek'fast for you." He has a warm smile. He's the only one that calls me Eve instead of Evie or Evonleigh. I chuckle at his play on words and his smile widens. "We've got th

There's earth, we're used to that. But what else? It's sweet, but not to eat. It makes me think of colors. We don't see colors often. It bring to mind the color of Carla's hair clip. The one with the plants, what did she call them? Purple flowers. She called it wist.. something. Wisteria? Yeah, purple wisteria.'Hetty, are you there?'Silence. It's deafening. Painfully so.'Herietta!'Panic consumes me. I've never been alone like this.I should open my eyes. The light, it's blinding. I blink the sting away. Something isn't right. I feel weak, and cold. I'm never cold in my form. Ok Honour, think. What's the last thing you remember? Think. Think. Think. We were in the white room.Dr. Krauft had just checked our straps. He said it'd only be a pinch.Carla had just walked in, she gave him a

JessI start with vitals; lung sounds, heart beat, eye check. Nothing out of the ordinary for a wolf. She seems underweight. "Could you go grab the portable scale for me?""Of course" Leo stalks off to the shed.Next up are teeth and claws. Teeth look normal, perfect even. Claws are a bit long, odd. Ears are fine. Next I run my hands along her legs to check for joint swelling, injury, or parasites; ticks, fleas, etc. Nothing. So far she's seems the picture of health, although a bit on the larger side.Leo comes back with the scale and helps me shimmy her onto it. 103.94 lbs. Not bad for an ordinary female, but she's large, she should be closer to 120-130lbs."She's definitely underweight, but otherwise healthy. She probably collapsed from hunger and exhaustion." Leo writes my assessment on my clipboard. You'd think he's a vet tech and not a carpenter. "We'll tag her, let her rest a few days, get her weight back up and let her back out."I go to stand back up and he's instantly got one
