Now, let us wind back the hands of the clock to the afternoon of the day before, when Karlos Monte, lieutenant of the Medietan Land Army and commander of the Medietan 33rd Battalion was having a conversation with a messenger on the deck of an old troopship on which five hundred soldiers under Lieutenant Monte’s command had embarked.

The lieutenant had received a direct order from Emperor Derisus the Third to send his forces to Medietapolis as reinforcements because the Piletans were about to attack the capital city. Lieutenant Trento, a good friend of Lieutenant Monte’s, was also ordered to travel to Medietapolis.

Lieutenant Monte was about halfway to Medietapolis when the messenger, who had escaped from Medietapolis on a scout plane before crashing into the ocean and being rescued by the troopship.

While a group of soldiers helped Lieutenant Monte onto a landing craft, the burning troopship began to sink. But by then, all the landing craft were in the water.“Behold, the tide is rising! We will be able to land much closer to shore than I had expected. Listen carefully to my orders,” the lieutenant said to his men.“Fifty men will scale that cliff and attack that enemy cannon while another fifty men will cover their assault from the bottom of the cliff. You are to capture the cannon, causing as little damage to it as possible, and use it to support our landings.“The rest of you will storm the beach with me. At the same time, another force of five hundred men under Lieutenant Trento will join our attack from the northeast. We will

As Lieutenant Monte and his men approached the enemy trenches, the lieutenant received a call on his walkie-talkie. “Hello, this is Karlos Monte of the Medietan Land Army. Who is speaking to me?” “Hello, sir. I am the agent that you have hired to follow Paxis Pontellius to Del Cealus. I am currently standing in front of the city of New Ajens, waiting for your orders,” “You’ve arrived at Del Cealus? Good! What took you so long to call me?” “I am deeply sorry, sir. I didn’t count on being attacked by Piletan ace pilots who were also searching for Del Cealus. My slow plane was hit dozens of times, and I was afraid I wouldn’t make it. But then, a miracle happened. A storm cloud appeared out of nowhere and wreaked havoc on the

“How much longer do you have to keep flying in circles like this, Henrique? We’re running dangerously low on fuel,” Roberto yelled at his brother, who was driving their biplane. “All the other pilots are running low on gas, too,” he added. “We’ve been flying for almost twenty-four hours now!” “Can’t you see that I’m trying to concentrate? I remember these crescent-shaped islands. We were flying near them when I was hit in the face by that nasty beret. That means we have been flying in circles for some time now. If it weren’t for that child, we wouldn’t have to be doing this!” Henrique retorted. “It’s hopeless. We’re going to have to land and refuel to be able to continue searching for that flying donkey,” “How

When Takao heard Zenoch fire the missiles, he immediately realized the danger he was in. He had tested some prototype guided missiles before, and thus, he knew exactly what it sounded like when they were fired.Takao turned around and saw that all four missiles were coming his way. The second-best pilot in all of Piletus should know better than to fire all four of his missiles at once? Zenoch must have gone raving mad, he thought. His rage and desire to punish me are blinding him.Having fired the missiles, Zenoch turned his plane around and headed away from Takao as to not be in range of Takao’s bullets. He knew that the

Around the time Zenoch and the Renaldo Brothers arrived at Del Cealus, Ishida and his friends were departing Master Aram’s farm for King Rexius’ palace.“Why can’t I go too? Grandma Nina said that I’m a big boy now,” Jameck whined.“Mrs. Sakai will take good care of you,” Master Aram told the boy. “You’re too young to come along— the mountains are very dangerous. Even a master sage like me injured myself several times while going over them. Falling rocks, avalanches, and snowstorms aren’t hard to find on those mountains. The best for you is to stay here.”“What makes you want to go with us?” Ishida asked.

The three travelers waited until everyone was done moving before getting onto the train. Rhina sat down next to an elderly lady whose head was covered by a shawl. Ishida and Master Aram remained standing and let the other passengers take their seats.“Hello there,” the old lady said to Rhina. “Would you like to have some cookies?”The lady handed a small chocolate chip cookie to Rhina. “If you like it, I’ll give you another one.”“Thank you.” Rhina smiled. She took the cookie and bit into it. “Amazing! Did you make this yourself?”The lady nodded happily. “Here, gi

The rest of the train ride was relatively uneventful. Ishida and Rhina stared out the window, marveling at the astonishing scenery.Everything was so flat— it was like they were on a whole new planet with just flat plains extending in all directions. Some of the plains were agricultural ones while some were flower fields, and the rest were just grass. But even the grass here was different from the grass on Mount Lagoda. It was taller, reflected more light, and looked gold-like.After the plains finally vanished, the travelers saw what they were expecting to see: the Holy Mountains.Twelve peaks— one in the middle and the others surrounding it— rose from

A few moments later, Rhina was on the other side of the canyon with Ishida. Just two seconds after she jumped, the entire bridge collapsed and plummeted down to the river. Both of them were silent, staring at each other. After they had recovered from the shock of nearing death, they headed up Mount Siwalai. The first part of the journey was not very difficult; although there were parts of the mountain slope that were covered in dense, overgrown forests, it was pretty flat— at least for the most part.A certain portion of the trip required Ishida and Rhina to climb a cliff face, which was less enjoyable than walking through thick jungles.Ishida climbed up the cliff with his bare hands, as it was not ver

There once was a saying in the land of Medietus: “What is neither possible nor impossible is neither achievable nor unachievable. All of it simply depends on the individual’s point of view.”That night, Ishida had a dream. It was nothing like any dream he had ever had.Ishida found himself standing on the balcony of a seaside house at dawn. He was staring out at the dark ocean, watching as wave after wave lapped on the shore.Seagulls flew by in the unlighted sky above him. A breeze gently shook the leaves of nearby palm trees. A bright yellow sphere was rising from the mountains, illuminating dark clouds and giving light to everything.Rays of light emerged from the calm waters, lighting up the area an

Something seemed off about the Ajenian king’s appearance. At first, Ishida and Rhina could not identify what it was.The king was in a luxurious robe…did he have a crown? Yes, he did. Was he holding a scepter? Almost— he was holding a staff. What was the problem, then?Ishida was the first to figure it out. When he did, he let out a cry of terror.“What is it, Ishida?” Rhina asked.“The king!” Ishida shrieked. “The king’s an old man!”When Rhina saw the king’s long white beard, wrinkly face, and messy white hair, she, too, let out a terrified cry.“What?” Kin

As the wooden door was slowly opened, a flash of golden light flooded out of the small opening in the door and engulfed the entire mountaintop. Finally, when the door had fully opened, Ishida and Rhina had the opportunity to gaze upon the grandeur and opulence of the reception hall.“Welcome to the Great King’s palace! Welcome to the Great King’s palace!” a multitude of voices chanted. These were the voices of King Rexius’ servants, who were all half-fish and half-beaver.The reception hall was brightly lit by crystal-like chandeliers that hung from the high ceiling and were covered by thick, red carpets with golden edges that extended up the stairs and onto the second and third floors as well.

“Bring it on!” Ishida and Rhina said in unison. The Guardian nodded. “As you wish— let’s get started. The question may sound simple, but it is far more complicated than you can imagine. The question is: what is the purpose of your search for Ajens?’ I repeat: this question is far more complicated than you think.”Ishida turned to Rhina. “I have the answer. You know it too, don’t you? Do you want to say it?”Rhina shook her head. “I know what the answer you’re thinking of is, but I think we should think very carefully before answering.”Ishida ignored Rhina’s advice and said to the giant, “The purpose of our journey was for us to have a talk wit

Lieutenant Monte’s agent was surprised to find his boss in Rexia Castellum shortly before sundown. It was at the least favorable moment that the lieutenant spotted his agent, clad in an all-black suit and relaxing in a cafe. The lieutenant was unsurprisingly furious. He ordered Sarem and Alamein to wait outside and stormed into the cafe. He trashed the place, turning tables over and smashing several chairs to oblivion. The owner of the cafe and the Del Cealans who had nothing to do with the matter took flight and rushed out the door in a stampede. With no one else around, Lieutenant Monte was free to let all of his rage explode onto his indolent agent.“Agent Lazy-Head!” Lieutenant Monte yelled in rage. “I did

Ishida and Rhina were journeying down the steadily declining slope of Mount Siwalai, walking hand in hand. They had journeyed past the meditating sage of Mount Siwalai, making as little sound as possible as they went. The sun was now about halfway between the uppermost part of the sky and the horizon. Below them was a valley in which a vast lake stood in between the feet of Mount Siwalai and Mount Nawarat. The lake’s water was clear blue, enriched by mineral deposits that came flowing down the slopes of the Holy Mountains every spring in the form of melted snow: water. The two travelers said nothing to each other. They simply smiled and continued down the grassy slope of the mountain. “Lake Azure,” as Ishida called it, was soon within an arm’s reach

The avalanche, meanwhile, continued to increase its already inconceivable speed and was just a few hundred meters away from the two travelers.Five meters to go! Rhina continued pushing forward. She was not about to give in to Mother Nature. A few seconds later, her vision was obscured by the huge clouds of snow that rushed ahead of the avalanche.Even though she could not see beyond her own nose, she remained calm. Three meters!Soon, Rhina could feel the opening of the cave with her own hands. She lifted Ishida from the “snow raft” and promptly threw him into the cave. She was about to rush in as well wh
