“Enzo got three stitches on his forehead and a mild concussion.” Leo announced to us in the waiting room.

“Oh, thank god.” Grandma said, wrapping her hands around my body. I let out a sigh of relief finally, my head hanging low.

“Yeah, and the doctors said he needs to rest for the next twenty four hours. So minimal visitors.”

“Yeah, yeah. Of course.” Grandma said. “When is he going to be discharged?”

“They just want to keep him under observation for a few more hours before they let him go. It’s just for safety.” He said and his eyes then found me. “You can meet him in a few minutes. The nurse is just finishing up.”

I nodded, “Yeah.”

Right then, Grandpa came in, searching for my eyes. The police held him up at the mansion after hell broke loose, so he had to stay back and take care of that business. Before I left, he swore to me that Alfred would be behind the bars, but I told him to just get here as soon as possible.

“How is he?” He said as he approached me.

“He’s okay.”

There was no news about Alfred and his family the next day. All we knew was that his son bailed him out this morning, and they haven't stepped foot in the mansion since the ceremony. Inorder to make things better, I’d told Grandpa to be fair and give them what they wanted, to which he begrudgingly agreed. “I’ll take care of it.” He said, “Just enjoy your vacation.” “I sure will.” I said, “But you take care of yourself. We’ll be back in four days.” He nodded, before something caught his attention. Following his gaze behind my shoulder, I found Enzo talking to my grandmother. She was examining his wound, gently tapping it to see if it was still tender. As I glanced back at my grandfather, a warm smile claimed his face, “When we came to you, we were praying to God to let us have a granddaughter in our lives. I think God was sorry for us, and gave us a grandson too.” His words tugged at my heart. This was the same man who questioned if Enzo was the right person for me just mere wee

Enzo and I checked into our hotel at Positano, a small town on the Amalfi coast, officially kick-starting our babymoon. Since I was the one to suggest the idea, I took it upon myself to make all the hotel bookings and itinerary. So when Enzo casually walked into the room only to stop dead in his tracks, I knew that I’d managed to impress him. “Wow.” He said, glancing at me with surprise filled in his eyes, “This looks amazing. I wonder what the view is like.” As we went into the balcony, we were met with a breathtaking view of the coast, with the sea on one side and the bustling town on the other. It was just like what they promised in the hotel pictures. “How did you manage to get us a room here? That too, on such short notice.” I shrugged. “Do you like it?” “I love it.” He said, pecking me on the lips. “I can’t wait to get out there and have some fun on the beach.” “About that.” I said, grinning. “I’ve booked us a private boat ride at sunset. And we have about three hours to

For dinner, I made a reservation at La Sponda, a Michelin star restaurant. The place was candle-lit with the view of the sea - an entire package of a romantic dinner. Enzo was pleased with my choice as he sat at our table, looking dapper in his crisp white shirt paired with tailored trousers. He looked nothing short of ravishing tonight. As for me, I settled for a simple summer dress in pink, hoping Enzo picked up on the clue. Once we were done placing the order, the waiter asked, “Shall I get a bottle of wine, ma’am?”“Yes, please. A bottle of-” “No, actually. We’re good.” Enzo said, handing him the menu. “Why? Don’t you want some?” “I’ll give you company on your virgin Pina Colada.” He said, “By the way, there’s news from the UK.” I raised my brows, “Okay?” “Raymond got the contract.” I breathed a sigh of relief, “Thank God.” I said, “All that hustle… well, it worked in our favour afterall.” “Yes, and he asked me to thank you specifically.” The waiter came back with our fo

We scrambled inside the bedroom like two love-sick teenagers. “Careful there.” Enzo said as I fell back on the bed, dragging him by the shirt with me. “I’ll be fine.” I said, pulling him in for a kiss. Enzo planted his hands on either side of my head, delving deeper into my mouth with his. His kisses were hungry, yet gentle. There was always a softness with his touch. He never did anything to claim me, to make me feel like I belonged to someone else. Everything he did, he did it with care and respect. And that’s what I loved the most about him. He nibbled at my lower lip, giving it a gentle suck, as though he was playing the bigger game of seducing me. But I didn’t need to be seduced. I was already insanely turned on. I was yearning for him, his love and all I needed was for him to take me. Show me how much he loved me. “Enzo, please.” I said, “Can you get rid of your clothes already?” He sighed, pulling away from me completely. He started unbuttoning his shirt, suppressing a s

The next few days passed like a breeze. Enzo and I explored Positano, travelled to the Amalfi town, and came back to Naples to spend the evening there. And then, it was finally time to head back to Sicily. We would be joining Grandma and Grandpa for breakfast before we flew back home to the states. “Did you guys have fun?” Grandma asked as she sipped on her orange. “Oh, yes. It was a great trip. All the credit goes to Cassie here.” Enzo said, “She even planned a surprise gender reveal for me.” “Really?” Her face beamed. “Yes, Grandma, it’s going to be a girl.” “Another one?” Grandpa said, pleasantly surprised. “Damn.” “Don’t be like that, Albert!” Grandma said, slapping his hand. “No, I’m delighted. I can’t wait to spoil her.” He grinned, “It’s Enzo I’m worried about. It’s not easy having pretty daughters.”We broke into a laugh, and that was when someone approached the table. As I looked up, I realized that it was Axon. “Hello, everyone.” He said, “May I join you?” “Of cour

“All’s looking great, Cassandra.” The doctor said as she stepped away from my belly, that has now grown into the size of a giant watermelon. Or bigger, actually. “Nothing to worry about. Everything’s going fine and we’ll be able to get your daughter into this world in two weeks, on your expected date of delivery.” I grinned, looking at Enzo with excitement. But he seemed tense. “I can’t wait.” “Yeah.” He said, “Anything we should know about? Any extra care in these last few days?” “Nothing apart from the usual. Look for fetal movements, eat and rest well. You know the drill.” She said, “Don’t worry, Mr Deluca. You’re doing everything right.” “Thank you, doc.” A few minutes later, we were in Enzo's car making our way home. He was driving me, and while I tried to make conversation with him, he limited his responses to monosyllables. His eyes were focused on the road, but his mind was elsewhere. “Enzo?” I said, “Are you okay?” “Yes,” He frowned, stealing a quick glance at me, “Wh

I picked a red dress for dinner tonight, a classic choice that one can’t go wrong with. By eight o’clock, Enzo and I reached the restaurant, right on time. Enzo held my hand and walked up to the reception, checking our reservation. “Hello, we have a reservation under the name Trent Dalton at 8.” Enzo said. The receptionist was a small, young woman, who was clearly not used to seeing handsome men in her profession. Her cheeks flushed as she spoke to Enzo. “Y-yes. Mr Dalton’s already here. Let me guide you to your seat.” I couldn’t help but be amused at her. She was clearly dazzled. Who could blame her? Enzo looked dapper in his three piece all black suit. Luckily for me, I picked out a classic red dress for dinner tonight, complementing him. As we approached our table, I saw a lovely couple conversing with each other. As soon as they saw us, they gave us a huge grin. “Mr DeLuca.” Trent said, offering his hand, “Nice to finally meet you.” “You too, Mr Dalton.” Enzo said, and put h

It only took three days for my fear to come true. I was writing an email on my laptop when I heard the door bang shut. I shuddered at the sound, and feared if there was an intruder. But I quickly heard Enzo’s voice. It was evident that he was pissed. “Fucking hell.” Enzo said as he stormed into our bedroom, his phone pressed to his ear. He had an irritated frown on his face, and he quickly mumbled a sorry my way. I put my laptop away and sat up straight, noticing the file he threw on the table. “Get me everything you can find on this. I’m letting him have his way with this. He’s acting like a bratty child that was denied his fucking candy.” As Enzo cut the call, he looked toward me. “You were right.” “About what?” “That bastard Trent.” He said, “He’s messing with my UK branch, booking me for tax evasions.” “What?” I said, confused. Tax evasions? Enzo never does anything like that. How can he get sued for it? “How is that possible?” “He must have hired a mole in my firm to get

I just hurt my daughter while I tried to bring her out of the crib. What the fuck was I supposed to do now?My first instinct was to call Cassie and that’s what I did but to my dismay, she did not pick up the call. “Fuck this,” I said, “Pick up the damn phone, Cassie. But she wouldn’t. It just just kept going to voicemail. I called Sarah and Mark, but they would not talk to me either.Helpless, I stared at my wailing baby. I realized that I had only one option left. ****The ER was not a pretty place to be in, especially if you are a parent, but I still found myself in it. I waited outside the room as the Pediatrician was seeing Emmy. She allowed me to stay inside with her, but I chickened out. I couldn’t see Emmy in pain, knowing very well that I had caused it to her. Enzo’s POV Cassie was going to be the death of me.I knew that this was her scheme. She purposefully made sure that I would stay home by trapping me with Emmy‘s responsibility. I did not mind taking care of my daughter. I loved her. It’s just that I no longer trusted myself around her. I barely recognized myself and my daughter shouldn’t have to be in the hands of a person like me.I was not proud of it, but I knew that I had no idea how to handle her. For the past few days, I’ve made zero contribution towards taking care of her. It was all Sara and Cassie who were doing it. Hence, I could not be trusted with her. Why couldn’t Cassie understand that? After hours of negotiating with her, Cassie even stopped replying to my texts. Sarah and Mark were also unreachable and it finally dawned on me that today, I had to be taking care of my daughter. All alone.Right now, Emmy was asleep, but I knew that the moment she would get up, she would start crying. She needed a familiar figure to so

That night when I came home, another disappointment was awaiting me.Enzo was nowhere to be seen, yet again.“I found a lead and I told Enzo about it.” Mark said, “But he simply didn’t care. He said he had something to do outside and he just left.”I frowned, looking at Sara, but she just raised her hands up in defense. Before she could explain herself, Mark came to her rescue. “No, Sara tried really hard to stop him and I did too, but he simply wouldn’t listen. It was either that or physically block him but none of us had the courage. Sorry, Cassie. We couldn’t do anything.”I shook my head, closing my eyes. I should’ve known this. Why did I think he would change so soon? Of course, he was gone drinking again. What do I do with this man?“It’s fine, Mark. I know it’s not your fault. And Sara, how is Emmy doing?”“She’s fine, just fast asleep. And I made dinner.”I sighed in relief, “Thank you so much. I pushed him off of my body at once. “How dare you?” I demanded, fixing him with an angry glare. “I met him today.” He said, “He came to meet me at the bar. He even bought me a whiskey, since you know, he thought I can’t afford it. Generous guy.” He laughed. “Anyway, he told me about your little meeting today. And what you told him.” “What I told him?” I said. “I didn’t say anything.” “Which was precisely his point.” He said, “Said you were reconsidering things in the wake of everything.” “I can’t believe you bought that shit.” I said, “Why didn’t you tell me any of this before?” He shrugged, “I didn’t think you’d be honest with me.”“When did I ever lie to you?” I said, “Did you really think I would leave you for a scum like him?” “Well, the way he said it…”“He’s Calvin. That night when I went home, things couldn’t have gotten worse.Enzo was missing yet again, and I was afraid that it was slowly becoming a habit of his. I couldn’t understand what it was about him disappearing without letting any of us know. I knew he was having a tough time but this was unreasonable. He was punishing us with his recklessness and that did not deserve my kindness. I was patient with him till now. But not anymore. Sara had already gone to sleep while Emmy refused to retire to bed early. Since I needed that distraction, I played with her for a while before her eyes drooped. She fell asleep as I fed her, and I took her back into her room to place her in her crib. When I returned, I could hear the knob of the door twist. I glanced at the time. It was way past midnight. As soon as Enzo walked in, I could tell that he had been drinking yet again. He was reeking of whiskey from a mile away. “Where were you?” I demanded, putting my hands on my hips. “At the bar. I realized a few days later that the only silver lining amidst this chaos was my work. I was thriving at the professional front. Despite what was happening at home, I managed to bag a couple of very good projects, and my team was extremely impressed. I had just finished a meeting at one such client's office and was heading back to my own when I spotted a hotdog stand by the sidewalk. It was way past my lunch time, so I decided to take some much needed break while I sat outside. Right then, Sara called me on facetime. Taking it, I was amused to find Emmy’s face hovering over it. “Oh, Emmy.” I cooed, “You silly girl, what are you doing with Aunt Sara’s phone?” “Arrr…” She made some weird noise and the camera faced the sheet on the mattress. “Emmy!” I said, “Are you chewing on the phone?”“Oh, shit!” I heard Sara’s voice and her face came into view. “I’m so sorry. I was in the shower. I don’t know how she managed to call you.” I laughed, “Perhaps because I was your last call.” “Ye

As I walked in, Enzo had already discarded his clothes and was preparing to go to bed. “What the hell was that, Enzo?’ I said, “You were way out of line.” “About what?” He asked lazily. “Don’t try to play the fool with me. You know what I’m talking about.” I said, “What is your scheme really? Is this your way of pushing us away?” “Think whatever you have to, Cassie. I don’t care. I’m just doing what I feel is right.” “Oh, really?” I said, “This feels right to you? Worrying us until we’re sick and showing up this late? Not to mention drunk out of your mind?” He groaned, “So now I don’t have the freedom to do what I want to?” He said, “I didn’t know that the rules change when we’re living in your house.” That made me shut up. I couldn’t believe he said that. He was definitely trying to rile me up, so I desperately needed to distract him. There was no point trying to argue with him now. “Don’t you want to shower?” I asked him, eyeing his body. He could definitely use one. Maybe t

After a long, distracting day at work, all I wanted was my bed. I was hoping Sara had already cooked us some food like she had been for the past few days. But if she hadn’t, we would have to place an order. And I had no energy for that either. As I entered our apartment, I was relieved to smell the aroma of freshly prepared food. I walked into the kitchen, ready to thank Sara for her help. However, before I could do that, she walked out of the kitchen all tense. “Oh, Cassie. Thank God you’re back.” She said, “Why were you not taking my calls?” “Oh?” I said, quizzically and opened my phone. As she said, there really were four missed calls from her number. “My bad. It was on silent. What’s the matter?” “Enzo hasn’t come home since afternoon.” She said, “He said he was stepping out for lunch and he still didn’t return.” “What?” I asked, “Why did he go out for lunch? Was he going alone?” “I have no idea. He wouldn’t answer me. He got so angry when I tried to push him… I just kept

Enzo watched me as I got ready for work.It was my first day back at the office and I couldn’t be more relieved. To say the past few days have been difficult would be an understatement. I needed a distraction from everything, and what was better than going to the office? With Enzo unemployed, I had to make sure that I could put some bread on the table. Although my grandparents have been continuously calling me, offering me help, or in their words - letting me have what was mine, I simply could not let them. That would be the last straw for Enzo. He was already beating himself up as he saw me working day and night to make ends meet. “Did you speak to that friend of yours you were talking about?” I said, “The lawyer. He was offering you a job, wasn’t he?” “I lost my license to practice, Cassie.” He said, “I can’t practice law anywhere else.” I turned around, puzzled. “But Raymond told me that he offered you a position of a legal advisor.
