The news was like a splash of cold waters, harsher than the torrential rains that Essi once witnessed during her mountain trek. Her paths drew her to an impulsive drive, almost flying, just to catch up with Gwyneth before anything might get out of control. She managed to take her corporate attire to maintain the demeanor that the Mercators got impressed with her. She counted it as a reason why the Mercators regarded her with respect even though other families look at her as undeserving to be with Oneil.

With many things driving in her mind, she still had the mental strength to execute her intention spontaneously. Essi had no other choice of transportation means but to run towards a motorcycle terminal, hoping that a driver is available to send her downtown.

“Essi, it is night already. I’m afraid that your fare will get higher,” the driver was reluctant. It is noticeable that he was already planning to go home. A pack of roasted chicken was already tied to the maneuver of his motorbike.

“I’m willing to pay, mister. There’s an emergency and I cannot afford to let it pass,” Essi pleaded.

The driver was moved by Essi’s appeal, recalling that his daughter would have been out of road danger if a good driver gracefully sent her home safely instead of letting her walk along the national highway with the night as her lonesome company.

“Alright then. Let me just send this meal to my house,” the driver said while inviting Essi to take the seat already. The driver counted it as a small gesture to send Essi in front of a huge building. But the sight of the huge bill in his hand brought him almost out of his seat. He called Essi to pay him a lower price.

“Take it as my appreciation, mister,” sending him thanks, Essi scurried through the halls of the building, leaving a great impression on the driver.

It is not surprising that Essi could pay him a thousand pesos but what remained him staring at the grand doors was an unlikely sight. The imposing authoritative guards that no man would like to mess with just greeted Essi like boys in elementary schools. They followed Essi like ready assistants. Their weapons were no longer sufficient to keep up the dignity that had them dubbed as bosses of the building’s grounds.

“Perhaps, that woman is no joke,” he uttered after realizing that his mouth was agape. His lips turned a bitter smirk as his gaze passed through the nearby hospital. He remembered his daughter’s devastating state that almost had him lose hope of recovery. His daughter is now in a better state except for himself. Even with his wife’s constant reminder to let that situation pass, his heart persisted in silence. It is only louder every time he remembered it, he wanted to uncover the details of the accident. Exasperated, he drove away from the building of Gautarza Group.

“Madam Essi, we are glad of your sudden visitation,” the receptionist said, resolving herself to join her boss wherever she might go.

Essi nodded while looking for a place to change her clothes. The workers thought that she had an emergency meeting for them but she only required a few people to join her in the office.

“Any requests for appointments with the higher offices of the PHYGIN Manufacturing Company?” Essi asked.

One of the workers who joined Essi never heard of the mentioned company yet. “What company is that?”

“That’s the company of Ma’am Essi’s fiance. She has portions with that company to know crucial negotiations,” the co-worker answered.

“Madame, the officers did not regard it to be company-related. But Miss Gwyneth Mercator phoned an appointment meeting with the CEO of PHYGIN,” her secretary named Victor answered. “I believe it is now settled as instructed by your office.”

Essi may seem calm in their eyes but her heart is drum-like beating. She pursed her lips while nodding to the reminder about Gwyneth’s call any time of the night. Without intending to waste her worker’s time and effort entering her office, she brought to the table the consultations and opportunities to take both the PHYGIN and her company’s endeavors.

Victor noticed that some of the workers had a relentless wonder about Gwyneth and Essi’s decision to prepare a reception for her. Before they could bring it up, Victor took them outside with a warning to not cause any rumor in the building.

They hated how Victor is strict with them even though Essi seemed easygoing. A faint smile grew on Victor’s lips because they never knew Essi after all.

Everyone in the building declares that Victor is the embodiment of the stringent and critical architect of plans. They have never seen Essi yet. But Victor knew her behavior just as his cousin Steffan shared with him. He wished that he never asked about Steffan’s ultimate customer of his shop. But his cousin’s mouth was unstoppable in describing Essi not just as a customer but as a future leader of a company.

Having concrete clues about Essi’s goal to find Oneil, Victor accounts for himself as Essi’s silent helper even without Essi’s declaration of reliance on his efforts. Victor takes Essi’s proximity to him as the basis for cooperating with a heavy thing. He would not dare others to spoil the secrecy. Securing the doors from inquisitive ears, he gazed at Essi whose eyes were staring at the slowly developing city through the window pane.

“Miss Essi, I suggest that you call her now before she follows up with the PHYGIN,” Victor said.

Essi smiled at Victor’s thoughtfulness. He is indeed a reliable friend, someone who can understand the situation without exhausting the people to get him to empathize.

“I can also relay your message to her,” which he did after Essi’s permission.

Confused about PHYGIN’s reluctance and the sudden invitation from the Gautarza Company, Gwyneth took no other choice except to proceed to the designated hotel mentioned by Victor Pingris.

“Interesting, she made the room comfortable for me,” Gwyneth appreciated Essi’s effort and the motivation for all these things. “She could have just brought me to her rest house instead of this fancy hotel room.” Her bed smells pleasant and her surroundings invite her to a pleasant sleep. “It’s not a bad thing to meet them tomorrow instead of tonight, right?'' Gwyneth convinced herself. Yet, it never settled her down.

She wanted to call Oneil for other things, given that she wanted to know Oneil’s reaction after her breakup with Caleb. It is not enough to talk it out with Essi although she has an extreme fondness for her cousin’s fiancee. However, there was no ringing at Oneil’s end, even until this time.

Gwyneth tried calling Essi but there was no response as well. Bothered about Essi and Oneil’s reception of her, she had different thoughts.

What if something happened to my cousin and his fiancee? What if some bad people took PHYGIN and knew that I would be coming? What if they are all working to stop me from taking the company back?

“What if they set me up in this hotel room?” she asked hysterically. After all, it was never confirmed if Essi brought her to this place. She only heard the office worker’s voice. She ran towards the door with her facemask still on. She opened it abruptly and she garnered the attention of other customers and hotel staff. Some were almost frightened of her ghost-like appearance. Gwyneth’s smile didn’t resolve it all.

She wanted to call her parents but she saw Essi’s familiar silhouette, walking towards her. Gwyneth wanted to cry, realizing what a great danger it could have been if her thoughts were real. Seeing Essi safe and sound, she cannot help herself but walk towards her with her arms wide open.

“Essi, I thought that I was doomed and you and Oneil are in danger,” Gwyneth cried.

“Did she know already?” Essi worried herself as well. She kept her voice soft for Gwyneth to not notice.

“Are you guys alright? Where is Oneil?” Gwyneth’s inevitable question has finally come, in a familial form, while her arms are trying to wipe her tears.

“Well, he’s not with me,” Essi replied, knowing that her answer only sounded stupid. But Gwyneth did not bother to hush out her response. She only clarified her question for Essi to answer correctly. But Essi smiles while staring at Gwyneth. “You afforded to secure your skincare routine?”

“Indeed, I already had a skincare cheat day last time and I don’t want it to happen again,” Gwyneth answered. “Would you like me to help you take care of your skin tonight? I have many supplies with me. The hotel has some freebies too.”

“That’s cool but I also have to proceed to my place for now since there are things I have to fetch for the office.” It is not a good thing to tarry the night with a Gwyneth Mercator who had not yet seen her cousin. This young lady would just surround Essi with her repetitive question about Oneil.

“Really? I think you should entrust that to your secretary,” Gwyneth suggested.

“He has other things to mind about. I’d like to meet with you tomorrow, early in the morning to finish some things. How about that?”

Gwyneth didn’t say a word. She nodded but had a different plan. Essi left with the confidence that Gwyneth will rest in the night without checking how things are going on between her and Oneil. But Gwyneth was persistent. She has a different realization again which led her to a brave decision. “What if Essi and Oneil broke up? What will happen to our family? What will happen to them? I have to make sure that their relationship is going strong.”

Essi left the hotel, packing up her remaining strength to return to Bayanihan and wait for the morning of reckoning. Yet, even before the dawn could march with the sky, the dreaded knock was already upon the door.

Gwyneth was standing in front of her house, with the luggage, and her innocent smile. “I don’t know where Oneil's rest house is. So I thought of coming here with Victor.”

Essi never felt her strong walls shrivel together with her weakness until this time.

Essi had never been this busy, at least in the speculating eyes of those who were around her. They thought that she was up for no other purpose but to pursue Oneil. The news spread fast enough, surprising them that Essi has a job. Why, indeed, is it a good thing when most of the young people in the town had often preceded their life to marriage settlements and others get unemployed and underemployed? Inevitably, Essi has little by little become the very child that the families in Bayanihan somehow wanted, someone that is helpful and diligent for every little passion they have in their pocket. In any case, if Essi is one of their family members, they might be ready to stop her from the foolishness of looking for Oneil in the person of Riley. But she was just a neighbor that they can only talk about and at least acknowledge her efforts to live her own life. Yet, still, they would never excuse Essi from their conversation. “She’s quite fancy to have a job post at Gautarza,” one of the wo

It was like the ruins after the storm, for Victor to see the girls in an awkward stillness. Without their words, Victor begins to understand that there were issues that probably spurred out between Essi and Gwyneth. Girls were always like this, having their way to confront and reconcile with each other. "Is there anything wrong?" he asked to ensure that the ground is safe for him to meddle with them. "No, nothing," Essi responded but proceeded to the kitchen after the gesture to let Victor sit. "Well, I guess we are better now," Gwyneth forced a smile while tucking the hem of her skirt into the rattan chair. It is her way to distract herself although it is vain. Her offer received no reaction from Essi. It is embarrassing but making the situation worse shall never be her option. Gwyneth repeated how sorry she was for insulting Essi a while ago. She could have refrained herself but it is done now. Both of them are doomed to the same boat loaded with the luggage of their issues. Vict

Familiar eyes always last and the fierce one from Essi is maybe influenced by the heat of the rising sun. Or maybe by the deep thoughts in her, that scream through the windows of her soul. Riley, as he likes to call himself to be, cannot help but get curious about Essi’s sentiment. Does it still have something to do with her plan to take him as Oneil? Does she find it way too hard? He wanted to tell Essi that she should not worry. For he was also trying to look for ways to check about his past other than Marika’s aid. Yes, he was troubled about being a dumb mutt. How strong those words were! Indeed, he was challenged by the young lady, the very company of Essi who went away already. Her words stirred Riley to wonder what kind of person Oneil was. What was his background? What was his work? Was he a freeloader or a son of a rich man? What if he is not the former as Marika’s parents would satirically blabber at him when they got displeased fits about life and the people around them? Ev

When every day will never be the same to the people of Bayanihan, their very Barangay Captain Arturo Sanchez counted that his nights were always the same. Almost every night, even from a farther distance, he could hear Marika and Riley quarreling about the same thing. However, it was Marika’s voice that traverses through the sky and dooms his residence to a chaotic connection with Riley’s hut. But the young man does not retaliate. Riley could reason but has never demanded Marika to peace out for the meanwhile. Yet, who is Captain Arturo but a mere father to an already grown woman who can now think on her own? What was best he could do was to spare advice from Marika’s sentence of no adherence. • Look At Me, Oneil   XI. Truly Affected

There were moments in rural life that are indeed idyllic. People are feeding their animals, children are sharing household chores, and some were preparing their meals. Gwyneth counted it a warm setting that made her pleased that she chose to stay with Essi. With a cup of milk and a provincial tabloid rationed to them, her morning is perfected. She randomly read out loud special portions in the tabloid that surfaced a contentious quote. “No relationship would like to wait for a busy woman,” Gwyneth read and halted with a strong degree of wonder. She glanced at Essi who was moving back and forth while checking the things she needed for work. “Did you hear what I read, Essi?” “I doubt that. Oneil is the one in my mind while I work though,” Essi replied with her morning brushed voice. It sounded like one of a soprano on a serious low-tone monologue. It may be quite nonchalant but Gwyneth acknowledged the sincerity. “Not just in the office. He’s always in my mind although I have appointme

It seems like someone is shy. Paco cannot escape Gwyneth's scrutinizing eyes although he already revealed his honest intention to not harm Essi. He tried keeping his pace faster but Gwyneth's steps are longer. Gwyneth is of the same height as him, 5'5. There are times she gets to walk closer next to Paco but would also get a little farther as if she wants to look at him from another angle. Her blond hair reveals the gentle touches of the wind as they stroll past the hill towards Essi's house. She keeps looking at him, with a sheepish smile. Her eyes also sparkle to a degree of knowing his little secret. Paco stopped for a while to stare at her. "Is there something you want to say?" "No, nothing," Gwyneth said but her grin would like to tell otherwise. "Just wanna make sure if Essi's admirer passes my standards first before hers." Paco felt stepping again on the cold floors of an ancestral house that they can no more reclaim. He can act that Gwyn

It’s a small world after all… and Bayanihan Town is just a speck of dust. All its corners cannot hide from the storm. It cannot keep Essi and Oneil aloof. After all those pleas yesterday, the two only have a little distance at the market. Oneil is up for his work in the rice store while Essi is in aim to stock some groceries. The sky is in the mood for bad weather, and the people are in the business to get ready for a coming storm. “Son, why are your thoughts away? I told you I want this variety of rice instead of what you are preparing,” the old woman told Oneil. “I’m sorry, ma’am.” The old woman understood him. “Young man, strengthen your mind to be in focus amid all problems. Don’t let your youthful years be clouded with worry.” Oneil smiled while scaling the rice. The old woman asked him of his name. Instead of the one he used to wear, he intended to mention Oneil. Perhaps, by this, Essi will forgive his words of yesterday near-evening. He glanced

Essi has always believed that meeting people like the Binici Siblings meant a good thing --that be it in business or social partnerships. But what Karina offers to her is quite different. Her words have stronger meaning underneath their simplicity as if Katrina had been always trying to interfere in Essi and Oneil’s lives. “So you people are just engaged. It means there is still a greater possibility for any of you to quit, right?” she asked Essi with a hint of excitement. Her words simply do not respect the relationship between the two. Essi chose to not pay attention to it. But Katrina was bugging her in another way by trying to set Essi up with Wyath for coffee nothings and casual dinner. “I do not have much time. If this meeting does not make any sense, then I won’t go, Miss Binici,” Essi declined. “My brother is willing to marry the girl he likes,” Katrina inserted just to make the phone call go on. “Really? That’s good for him then,” Essi commented but was about to excuse he

But before she took a step, Wyath went to her again. “Essi, since it is rare for us to meet, may I ask for your contact number?” Wyath was implying the personal one. “Okay,” Essi said and gave him her number. “But you should also give yours since my phone automatically sets an unknown number as spam.” When they got done exchanging numbers, Katrina went to Wyath to remind him that they must go home now. “Essi, it was nice to meet you. We’ll go ahead for now,” Katrina bid and dragged her brother to their car. “Will you still proceed to the hotel madame?” her chauffeur asked. “Yes, you can also take your time to enjoy things around,” Essi grinned and reminded him ab

Her appearance for the night is elegance mingled with youth and enthusiasm.“Welcome, Madame Essi,” the guard said upon recognizing her card. “This way please.”Essi followed the red carpet leading them to the Jewel Auction Hall No. 1. It is her first time to join an auction by herself. Oftentimes, she would just accompany a family member when they would like to purchase something from the auction. She continued walking around and not recognizing any familiar faces around the auction hall except Wyath. Wyath quickly noticed her too when he turned around. He approached her with a smile. He even introduced his sister to her.“This is my sister, Katrina. She’s the reason why we’d like to buy some of the Maes

She had two important target items because of the discovery that she arrived upon studying the decoration and details on the jewelry portfolio of her grandmother Priscilla. Two pieces of jewelry are no more in the possession of the Paulsson household. It suddenly became included in the auction series of the Legalion because it is made by Maestro Marco. The first piece was dubbed as Ingrid’s because Essi’s grandfather had especially commissioned the jewel maker to make a bluebird-inspired jewelry as a ready gift for his daughter once she will be brought to the world. Concerning the first two, he can see the clear directions on how the owners would take their future paths. But for the Mercator Group, he couldn’t see exactly where it even errs or go on correctly. He became an instant breadwinner with a clear source of income because the other Mercators in their humble barn house have to lie low for a while. His great ally on the discussion for the Mercator Group was his father.“Our hope in raising this alarm is to the interim chairman himself,” Paulo said. “If only he could also be cooperative to us.”“I don’t see any reason though that he wouldn’t,” Victor stated. “That is why I talked to him about the deliberation of a new policy concerning the selling and purchase of shares.”“What do you see is the problem about the shares then?”“I see some problems of the old policy. Sometimes, amid all trials, one couldn’t help but wonder how others felt for them. It was in Victor especially when he regarded how Mr. Arlelle must have reacted to the fate that chased the Mercators. Yet, hoping to be always in his favor, Victor could only remain in silent and work with perseverance. It must have been a good asset that he was not heard as a Mercator because no one would chase him in the hopes to scoop out a splice of an information that can serve a cup of tea. Victor was on his way back to Arlelle’s office, bringing the reports about the recent confirmations he received on his email. But while he was outside the office, he heard some key people of Amyrgia-Gautarza.“How come that you still keep him sir? Is he not a member of the Mercators?
