They see her as the antagonist. A villainess sent for retribution. Only a few of the people of Bayanihan could welcome her with a smile or speak with her hospitably. She might be among the powerful, but they cannot easily believe it. They look at her with precaution and at her guards with a sneer. They speak ill about her from behind and attack her with scowling and mockery.

Yet, none of these troubles can stop Essi Paulsson from staying at Bayanihan for the sake of Oneil. He is the reason why she can resist the hostilities directed at her. For him, she can keep up herself in the presence of the crowd at the most unlikely place.

The barangay of Bayanihan is a vast land. Houses situate from each other. But words and gossip were running through the distance. How could they not when a new person is shaking the entire town?

“There she is again, the ostentatious self-acclaimed fiancee of Riley,” was one of their thoughts against her. They keep calling Oneil Riley because that was how he got identified by the people who found him.

Essi didn’t bother to defend herself or run from the crowd. She had to remain brave in the queue with them for water supply since barely any cubit could reach the leased house. Standing in the tropical heat, dealing with her sweat-drenched shirt and mudded pants, and orientated to the way of rural life, she wasn’t worried anymore about what anyone else thought about her.

“Why not just hire a man to fetch you water, Isi?” an old man with eight pails in his wagon asked. He didn’t question why her guards were not with her. Maybe she’s like those rich people who prefer to hire others to give them immediate livelihood and income. “By your beauty and wealth, you still have not thought of hiring someone? You’re just wearing yourself out.”

“I can manage, Tata Ramon,” Essi replied. Essi could stand the rudeness of the villagers because of some elders who show their care amid their henpeck. Essi has seen such treasured behavior in Tata Raon. She has understood that they are sweet but cannot be vocal with their feelings. “What about that young man whom you keep claiming as your fiance? Why is he still not with you?” Tata Ramon asked.

Essi smiled to show that she didn’t mind him showing his care to a foreigner like her. However, she was not sure why Tata Ramon was curious about Oneil. Essi went on with a vague answer. “It’s not that easy.” She pressed on with another smile, revealing that her being strong-willed was more vehement than her uncertainty about Oneil. “I will not go until he returns to me.”

Tata Ramon sighed for Essi. “You know what? Ever since the two of you came here to our province, there was no such an ordinary day anymore..”

“But I came here late, Tata,” Essi defended. She never intended to turn the course of the province upside down. In the first place, she never knew that she would stir too much discourse.

“Well, Riley came here first. But he already has amnesia. No one among us would believe him because we only saw and heard such a case on TV. Now, my daughters and nieces have gone crazy on him because they keep saying he is handsome. I admit he is one. Just like how I used to look when I was young.”

Essi nodded while hearing familiar statements all over again from Tata Ramon. Almost everyone in the village would say the same thing.  But Essi always keeps her guard up. She suspected that some people were just utilizing friendliness to keep the fire of the issue burning. They were the crowd’s favorites. Still, Essi exempts Tata Ramon in her attempt to be silent. She chooses to answer him when he asks certain things.

“But now, this is my real wonder, Essi,” Tata Ramon said intently. “How long can you do this?”

“The answer is in the waiting. I have come this far.”

“So you love him that much?”

Back then, when one must ask what Essi felt for her fiance, she would say that it was a love not visited yet existing. It is untested but would wish to remain –to wait for Oneil amid the cold night at the Mountain Park past the arranged time is just a little thing. She could do it for a long while because it was a rarity among the chances that they collide with each other’s horizons. She waited. But he never came.

Essi imagined she would go back to the hotel wondering where Oneil went instead of meeting her. But it was anxiety that disturbed her night. It was impossible to bat her eyes down. Her calls were unanswered by him. She went out in search of Oneil. Essi tried roving through the paths where Oneil might go before reaching Mountain Park. The memory of their morning conversation returned to her like this.

“If I couldn’t go to you, would you be the first to find me?” Oneil asked while holding her hand.

“Are you challenging me? You know that I’m the first to notice if you went out of the party or when you want to be silent,” with a sudden question, of course, Essi would pull a vain joke.

Alas, she shouldn’t have said something like that. It dawned upon her how terrible it was to wake up the next day without hints of what happened to Oneil. The night would have been a practical joke except that Essi drove the entire immediate roads of the city of Mon Salvador, losing her wits to where she could begin finding him.

“Where are you, Oneil?” she uttered through the cold air –the dropping temperature through the mountainous land was more brutal to Essi without Oneil beside her.

Essi thought of calling someone. Disconnecting her phone’s Bluetooth from the car, the radio news kicked in with a hint that she could get some help from the Elite Guard Agency. She used to shrug at sponsored information, but with the reality that she needed loyal help, these people could be her best ally.

While they couldn’t begin looking for him at the major establishments, Essi got the company of the bodyguards for search operations to questionable places. Threads and links were coming to her, others sounded spurious, and many were filtered away as potential bogus. They spent nights and days with minimal information –barely enough to get better development on their purpose.

As the days went on without news about Oneil, Essi felt like losing herself. She seems to remain tough on the outside, but her inner self was falling at the desperate plea to see Oneil’s face immediately. How can she find him? Will he surprise her again and show her he was just somewhere around? She couldn’t even tell.

Essi handled the businesses within the buildings of Gautarza Complex with minimum enthusiasm covered by professionalism. Treating each day in their dullness without solid leads to Oneil, she passed through the main pavement of the complex with her guards. She heard a man and a guard of an accessory shop arguing.

“Please just give this to her because she missed her lunch.”

“Come on, man. You know that we’re not allowed to bring foods here.”

Their voice gets louder even when Essi’s team are still from afar.

“Please just give this to Marika.”

“If you are her boyfriend, you should understand that you can’t bring that kind of food inside. Do you want to get her embarrassed?”

Essi didn’t bother to meddle in their commotion since they got silent when she was in sight.

“We’re sorry for the commotion, ma’am,” the guard told Essi. He knew that she was the owner of the complex. She’s the higher boss that he should at least acknowledge. Although Essi focused on her job and Oneil, she observed that the guard gave up arguing and let the man in to meet a sales intern.

That is what all Essi knew happened. Later that day, she found out that there was a missing accessory in that shop. It was a micro-managerial concern undeserving of higher-up delegations, but the guard asked for her help because he was afraid of losing his job.

“Ma’am, please help me to prove to Ma’am Regina and her daughter that something sneaky happened in the shop.” The guard also pointed out that it must be the hoodie man who messed up the shop to steal some jewelry. He invited Essi to the monitoring studio to view what that hoodie man did inside the shop.

“If it gets proven that Riley stole our accessories, it would be easier to catch him.” The guard never missed pointing all over again to Essi about the hoodie man’s partner and their exact address in the barangay of Bayanihan.

The system loaded. The angle with his clearer image zoomed in.

A message of mysterious intel came to Essi’s phone.

“That is Riley Ramirez,” the guard said.

“He’s in Bayanihan,” the message simultaneously declared what the guard added.

All of this pertained to the person Essi has been trying to find. She immediately searched for the hoodie man who was Oneil Mercator after all.

Along with the elite guards, Essi went through obstacles with people subjecting them to suspicion and many questions. But she finally came around like among the treasure hunters reaching the end of their elusive goal.

She found him gleeful in his innocence. The brightness of summer beamed at him. It was enough for Essi to see him better.

“Oneil, I finally found you,” she uttered while walking toward him.

He was close to her vision –though he was meters away, she could hug him after many steps. It didn’t matter if he got frozen in his place. She will go to him anyway.

“Who are you?” Oneil asked.

“I’m Essi. Your fiancee,” she said in delight that he must be just fooling her.

But when she was about to reach him, a new name got declared to defy her reality.

“Riley!” and Oneil turned to the coming person who was never familiar to Essi.

He left Essi wanting to never agree with the fast pace recognition her mind could create. But her realizations got louder in declaring one thing. It is not about finding Oneil anymore. It is about taking him back. And yet, she’s never sure of the right way to begin.

Hence, she’s here.

Fighting for love. Fighting for the arrangement. Never retreating from the reality set before Oneil and Essi –even if others would deny it for her.

“Perhaps you will not believe it, Tata Ramon,” Essi said.

“I believe you. You are the only one who knows Oneil better than anybody else,” Tata Ramon responded. “Well then, I can only give you my blessings, just like your parents would for the two of you.”

Yet, this is the case now. None of Essi or Oneil’s parents knew about this. It is a heavy secret dragging Essi to a faster war with time. None of Essi’s loved ones in Bordeaux should know that Oneil has amnesia because of her. She needs to solve the problem first before going back to Bordeaux.

There were good things a month before Oneil and Essi parted. They were like the tamed seas for smooth sailing. All was well when they were in Bordeaux. Distinct lights oscillated in and throughout the chateaux of the Paulssons. Inside, the lights gave off warmth and a welcoming ambiance to anyone that entered. Outside, the shafts reflected the hidden romantic side of Bordeaux. The scent of the vineyard mixed with the wind. It was a perfect spot for people to know each other. It was also a pleasant evening for the Paulssons and the Mercators to have dinner. There was Madame Deleila, going back and forth to check the arrival of her visitors. Butler Roman was beside Madame Deleila to assure her that everything would run smoothly. However, the madame could not relax. Everything was ready except her daughter. The daughter was still on her way back to the chateaux. “Madame Essi, your mother is asking when do you get here?” Butler Roman asked with his baritone voice. His expertise and prox

Even though the mind forgets, the heart can remember it all. It was a classic saying insufficient for Essi to pull as her last card. Because how could she be sure that she was in Oneil’s heart? Her best friend, Geovensia, keeps telling her that Oneil had no feelings for Essi and that all his actions were just courtesy, the fruits of being a well-mannered gentleman and a filial son. Essi defended that at least Oneil could make her comfortable. “You’re not hurt, good. But my concern is that you should at least not have feelings for Oneil. Make it fair. It’s your defense in case he would begin to distance from you.” “How can I not like him when I know Oneil is nice?” Essi unabashedly says. His entrance into her life was like the threshold of summer. He was altogether familiar but new. He was elusive but warm. Essi was close to him since grade school but never heard about him after ten years. Essi had liked Oneil even before they met again and still does though the gentleman cannot r

There was a knock on the door on a Wednesday morning. It was the landowner’s son. Essi leaned herself on the jab of the door to scrutinize the young man. “What is it, Paco?” she asked in anticipation that the young man would exact her again for the rent of the house. She already paid the deposit and advanced fees. The boy couldn’t fool her anymore. “Nurse Jenny is here.” He left his nurse cousin in Essi’s house. “Hello, ma’am,” the nurse said. She was the same nurse that talked with her at the hospital. “May I come in?” “Yeah, sure,” Essi responded. She is puzzled that she has an unlikely visitor. “Is there anything I can help you with?” she asked while heading towards the kitchen. “By the way, would you like some juice?” “Anything will do, ma’am,” the nurse politely responded. A pleasant smell came to the nurse as Essi headed toward her. She brought crepes, chocolate, and orange juice. The nurse cannot deny her wonder why other people still think wrongly about Essi. She called him Oneil on the first day that they met. She came to his small house suited in contemporary armories that translate to power and influence. Despite her appearance, there was that woman meant to get heard. Every scene that day was vivid and unprecedented. She called him by another name, eyes sparkling to recognize a dream realized in the mundane world. Her voice revealed a little hope emerging. Yet, like a rebellious wave, he crushed the scene by insisting he was Riley. She insisted on a plea to recognize her as his fiancee. That moment, perhaps, could be the day of reckoning with his hidden past and memories. But Marika came and troubled the scene. She protested Essi’s claims by the truth that Riley learned to live. Compared to the woman who just arrived, Marika would be more reliable. After all, Marika was there for him and has given him food, shelter, and knowledge that there are strangers who care for him. Although Riley couldn’t accept some of Essi’s statements, he

It is an impending sense of dread for Essi that Gwyneth would still arrive any time sooner. If it were not for the bad weather in Manila, Gwyneth would have not been stranded until this time. Essi could still prepare for her arrival while managing all her wits and peace. But it was harder to deny that all her reasons to stay calm were leaving her grounds. “Why are you nervous? Did you meet some bad guys on your way?” Paco asked as he stood up from the long bench situated near Essi’s abode. The nineteen-year-old man went to Essi with the chivalrous endeavor of assisting her about whatever may come upon the lady. At first, he was not there out of his desire but because his mother instructed him to. He had to make sure that Essi is still on her normal psyche as a good tenant that will efficiently pay monthly dues to them. But now, Paco is convinced. Gossip seemed to not cease against Essi and has only evolved to accuse her with desperation for love. Indeed, those things were harsh. To

The news was like a splash of cold waters, harsher than the torrential rains that Essi once witnessed during her mountain trek. Her paths drew her to an impulsive drive, almost flying, just to catch up with Gwyneth before anything might get out of control. She managed to take her corporate attire to maintain the demeanor that the Mercators got impressed with her. She counted it as a reason why the Mercators regarded her with respect even though other families look at her as undeserving to be with Oneil. With many things driving in her mind, she still had the mental strength to execute her intention spontaneously. Essi had no other choice of transportation means but to run towards a motorcycle terminal, hoping that a driver is available to send her downtown. “Essi, it is night already. I’m afraid that your fare will get higher,” the driver was reluctant. It is noticeable that he was already planning to go home. A pack of roasted chicken was already tied to the maneuver of his motorbik

Essi had never been this busy, at least in the speculating eyes of those who were around her. They thought that she was up for no other purpose but to pursue Oneil. The news spread fast enough, surprising them that Essi has a job. Why, indeed, is it a good thing when most of the young people in the town had often preceded their life to marriage settlements and others get unemployed and underemployed? Inevitably, Essi has little by little become the very child that the families in Bayanihan somehow wanted, someone that is helpful and diligent for every little passion they have in their pocket. In any case, if Essi is one of their family members, they might be ready to stop her from the foolishness of looking for Oneil in the person of Riley. But she was just a neighbor that they can only talk about and at least acknowledge her efforts to live her own life. Yet, still, they would never excuse Essi from their conversation. “She’s quite fancy to have a job post at Gautarza,” one of the wo

It was like the ruins after the storm, for Victor to see the girls in an awkward stillness. Without their words, Victor begins to understand that there were issues that probably spurred out between Essi and Gwyneth. Girls were always like this, having their way to confront and reconcile with each other. "Is there anything wrong?" he asked to ensure that the ground is safe for him to meddle with them. "No, nothing," Essi responded but proceeded to the kitchen after the gesture to let Victor sit. "Well, I guess we are better now," Gwyneth forced a smile while tucking the hem of her skirt into the rattan chair. It is her way to distract herself although it is vain. Her offer received no reaction from Essi. It is embarrassing but making the situation worse shall never be her option. Gwyneth repeated how sorry she was for insulting Essi a while ago. She could have refrained herself but it is done now. Both of them are doomed to the same boat loaded with the luggage of their issues. Vict

Essi has always believed that meeting people like the Binici Siblings meant a good thing --that be it in business or social partnerships. But what Karina offers to her is quite different. Her words have stronger meaning underneath their simplicity as if Katrina had been always trying to interfere in Essi and Oneil’s lives. “So you people are just engaged. It means there is still a greater possibility for any of you to quit, right?” she asked Essi with a hint of excitement. Her words simply do not respect the relationship between the two. Essi chose to not pay attention to it. But Katrina was bugging her in another way by trying to set Essi up with Wyath for coffee nothings and casual dinner. “I do not have much time. If this meeting does not make any sense, then I won’t go, Miss Binici,” Essi declined. “My brother is willing to marry the girl he likes,” Katrina inserted just to make the phone call go on. “Really? That’s good for him then,” Essi commented but was about to excuse he

But before she took a step, Wyath went to her again. “Essi, since it is rare for us to meet, may I ask for your contact number?” Wyath was implying the personal one. “Okay,” Essi said and gave him her number. “But you should also give yours since my phone automatically sets an unknown number as spam.” When they got done exchanging numbers, Katrina went to Wyath to remind him that they must go home now. “Essi, it was nice to meet you. Her appearance for the night is elegance mingled with youth and enthusiasm.“Welcome, Madame Essi,” the guard said upon recognizing her card. “This way please.”Essi followed the red carpet leading them to the Jewel Auction Hall No. 1. It is her first time to join an auction by herself. Oftentimes, she would just accompany a family member when they would like to purchase something from the auction. She continued walking around and not recognizing any familiar faces around the auction hall except Wyath. Wyath quickly noticed her too when he turned around. He approached her with a smile. He even introduced his sister to her.“This is my sister, Katrina. She’s the reason why we’d like to buy some of the Maes

She had two important target items because of the discovery that she arrived upon studying the decoration and details on the jewelry portfolio of her grandmother Priscilla. Two pieces of jewelry are no more in the possession of the Paulsson household. It suddenly became included in the auction series of the Legalion because it is made by Maestro Marco. The first piece was dubbed as Ingrid’s because Essi’s grandfather had especially commissioned the jewel maker to make a bluebird-inspired jewelry as a ready gift for his daughter once she will be brought to the world. It must have been a good asset that he was not heard as a Mercator because no one would chase him in the hopes to scoop out a splice of an information that can serve a cup of tea.
