There was a knock on the door on a Wednesday morning. It was the landowner’s son.

Essi leaned herself on the jab of the door to scrutinize the young man.

“What is it, Paco?” she asked in anticipation that the young man would exact her again for the rent of the house. She already paid the deposit and advanced fees. The boy couldn’t fool her anymore.

“Nurse Jenny is here.” He left his nurse cousin in Essi’s house.

“Hello, ma’am,” the nurse said. She was the same nurse that talked with her at the hospital. “May I come in?”

“Yeah, sure,” Essi responded. She is puzzled that she has an unlikely visitor. “Is there anything I can help you with?” she asked while heading towards the kitchen. “By the way, would you like some juice?”

“Anything will do, ma’am,” the nurse politely responded.

A pleasant smell came to the nurse as Essi headed toward her. She brought crepes, chocolate, and orange juice. The nurse cannot deny her wonder why other people still think wrongly about Essi. When she asked for her whereabouts from the known people of Bayanihan, they described Essi as that opulent noisemaker, a coquette, and a destroyer of the love team. However, she did not come to her place for such a nuisance.

“Why were you looking for me, Nurse Jenny?” Essi asked while placing chocolates on the crepe.

“It has something to do with the Mercators.”

Due to her response, Essi halted and stared intently at Nurse Jenny. She asked boldly, “What do you know?”

“I found out that the Oneil I asked you to send regards is here in Bayanihan,” she said. “He was also in the hospital. When I checked on him for a nurse report, I was astounded that he called himself Riley Ramirez. But I am sure, Miss Essi. He is Oneil.”

“No one believes such claim here, Nurse Jenny,” Essi replied, almost whispering. She stopped when the nurse stared at her.

“I know that you are his fiancee,” she revealed. “I found it out from Miss Gwyneth.”

“What else do you know?”

“Nothing else ma’am. I just considered their claims that he had amnesia and inquired a municipal doctor about his case. Oneil’s amnesia might be longer or gets permanent.”

Essi felt the churning on her stomach, calling her to worry. Oneil’s case would only mean that the Paulssons and the Mercators will find out soon what happened to him. She is not ready to carry such shame. Essi preferred for her problems to be solved first before they would know it, that she may boldly say, “Let bygones be bygones.”

“Why are you telling me about this, Nurse Jenny?”

The nurse smiled at her. “It is because I believe you. I support you on returning Oneil to his home.”

Essi held her head while processing Oneil’s situation. His amnesia made all his interactions and moments with Essi null and unbelievable. He might see it unreasonable to get together with her.

However, such a scene only made the speculating eyes fuel gossip about Essi.

“Look, a nurse is with her,” an old woman commented. The speculators are outside a nearby shed. Even Riley passed by and was able to glance at Essi and the nurse.

“What is going there, Ale?” Riley asked in a broken dialect.

“Riley, that crazy girl who thinks you are her boyfriend seems already going out of her mind. Perhaps, she gets loco,” she revolved her fingers near her head to emphasize her claim. “Look, even a nurse has to visit just to check on her,” the old woman said. “I am telling you, in a relationship, there are new people who would come to challenge it. So don’t let that woman ruin your relationship with the daughter of the Kapitan. You are better off without that new girl.”

Oneil only smiled, implying no rude thoughts toward the girl. “Let us consider her situation, Ale. She is still our neighbor. Be friendly to her,” he said then left them stunned.

“How can he not be threatened by such a vixen? If he would not listen, it only means that Essi has already got him on her fingers,” they speculated without knowing what ordeal is surrounding Essi now.

Inside Essi’s house, the nurse still talked with her about a few things concerning Oneil. She even let Essi recollect her memories with Oneil for the conversation to go through.

“Nurse Jenny, I want to ask a favor,” Essi appealed.

“I will gladly extend my help so, Miss Essi. Spill it.”

“Can you please keep this a secret for now?”

“How do you want me to keep it?” the nurse is confused.

“Don’t let anybody else know that Oneil is in Bayanihan. After all, they are calling him Riley. We can let them be. But for now, we cannot let such news reach our families yet. I am still not ready. I should at least return to them with Oneil by my side.”

The nurse nodded although she did not understand why Essi took this kind of plan. Hence she suggested, “Why not just grab him back to you? Do you know what I mean, ma’am? Like, you have all the rights to bring him because you know him. You are engaged to him.”

Essi sighed. “I cannot take him with this situation we have. He might despise me or accuse me of kidnapping him. He was so into believing that he was Riley. He would not buy any of my claims.”

“What should you do next then?” the nurse asked. “Perhaps, I can help you.”

“I take this experience as a revamp of our relationship.” Essi would make him know her again. Yes, even if it meant pursuing him. Looking at the nurse unconvinced, Essi continued, “Actually, my method is quite effective. He allowed me to call him Oneil when we were in the hospital. Sooner or later, he would take it wholeheartedly that he is Oneil Mercator.”

“I hope that would be a good thing, Miss Essi.”

For Essi, it is. But for Marika, it is not.

Marika stormed toward Riley’s hut after Riley allowed Essi to call him whatever she liked. She entered the place with anger and jealousy.

“Riley, why did you let that spoiled brat call you Oneil?” she confronted without any exordium to orient the innocent man. “You are not Oneil. Don’t take that name casually because you’re never sure–the real Oneil might be a lawbreaker at large. If you concede to her manipulations, you might get in trouble.”

Riley handled her tantrums gently. “Marika, hear me out first. Please.”

Marika calmed down to listen to him.

“I am only friendly to her because she might have a mental condition. Do you know? Maybe she cannot accept that her fiance had departed from her, and she takes all means to aid her feelings.”

“No way, Riley!” Marika yelled. “Just because you think that woman is sick, you would yield to her deceptive appeals? Wake up! You owe nothing to be good to her. You’re just harming your relationship with me. Everyone knows that I’m your girlfriend. What would you wish them to think of us?”

Riley held her shoulders to stop. “Will you not be considerate? It is just a little thing for her to call me Oneil. It is meaningless, nothing else.”

“That cannot be!”

“You were considerate to me when I was lost and of no idea about everything around. Why not to Essi?”

Marika gritted her teeth against his contention. “Are you accusing me of being partial?”

“No, I just want you to consider her. Look, she helped me. Why won’t you just take it as a return and favor to her?”

By that, Marika got silent. Not with the fact that Essi helped Riley. She was puzzled that Essi seemed to know better about the man she had been in love with for three years. She kept staring at Riley and suddenly say, “Don’t tell me you’re starting to believe her.”

Riley smiled with confidence. “I am Riley Ramirez. Just like you said. I am Riley and we have known each other for three years. We should have our first date downtown but I could not come because of family emergencies.”

Marika stared even more intently at him. These were the things that she told him first. Why was he reciting this again?

“Because I don’t want to forget anything, anymore,” he said. “Whether new or old memories with you, at least I am happy. Shouldn’t that be the thing to matter more?”

“Right, new memories should matter more.”

Marika left the hut with renewed confidence and a better position than Essi. She is the winner. So Marika is no more afraid to challenge Essi. She does not need to do anything. Gossips made it more favorable to her.

Essi found that people feasted on other gossip. It worsened to the point that she had a mental condition resulting from the breakup. They call her a desperate, brokenhearted woman.

“How far would they get me wrong? First a mafia and now, a desperate woman?”

Essi could shrug off their words. However, it meant for her to understand what was Riley’s intention to allow her on calling him Oneil.

“No way. I thought he was already starting to believe me,” she said in disappointment.

Her remaining choice was to provide every little proof to Oneil about his real identity. Where can she begin? A single photo is not enough either to change Oneil’s mind.

Now, to make her situation worse, a call was able to reach her phone even by the elusive mobile signal in the town. She answered it, forgetting to check that it was an international call.

“Hey, future cousin-in-law. I want you to know that I will catch up on your vacation with Oneil. Coach Geovensia allows me to have a three-week break. I will tell you once I arrive there.”

Before Essi could even protest, the call went out. She is doomed.

It is an impending sense of dread for Essi that Gwyneth would still arrive any time sooner. If it were not for the bad weather in Manila, Gwyneth would have not been stranded until this time. Essi could still prepare for her arrival while managing all her wits and peace. But it was harder to deny that all her reasons to stay calm were leaving her grounds. “Why are you nervous? Did you meet some bad guys on your way?” Paco asked as he stood up from the long bench situated near Essi’s abode. The nineteen-year-old man went to Essi with the chivalrous endeavor of assisting her about whatever may come upon the lady. At first, he was not there out of his desire but because his mother instructed him to. He had to make sure that Essi is still on her normal psyche as a good tenant that will efficiently pay monthly dues to them. But now, Paco is convinced. Gossip seemed to not cease against Essi and has only evolved to accuse her with desperation for love. Indeed, those things were harsh. To

The news was like a splash of cold waters, harsher than the torrential rains that Essi once witnessed during her mountain trek. Her paths drew her to an impulsive drive, almost flying, just to catch up with Gwyneth before anything might get out of control. She managed to take her corporate attire to maintain the demeanor that the Mercators got impressed with her. She counted it as a reason why the Mercators regarded her with respect even though other families look at her as undeserving to be with Oneil. With many things driving in her mind, she still had the mental strength to execute her intention spontaneously. Essi had no other choice of transportation means but to run towards a motorcycle terminal, hoping that a driver is available to send her downtown. “Essi, it is night already. I’m afraid that your fare will get higher,” the driver was reluctant. It is noticeable that he was already planning to go home. A pack of roasted chicken was already tied to the maneuver of his motorbik

Essi had never been this busy, at least in the speculating eyes of those who were around her. They thought that she was up for no other purpose but to pursue Oneil. The news spread fast enough, surprising them that Essi has a job. Why, indeed, is it a good thing when most of the young people in the town had often preceded their life to marriage settlements and others get unemployed and underemployed? Inevitably, Essi has little by little become the very child that the families in Bayanihan somehow wanted, someone that is helpful and diligent for every little passion they have in their pocket. In any case, if Essi is one of their family members, they might be ready to stop her from the foolishness of looking for Oneil in the person of Riley. But she was just a neighbor that they can only talk about and at least acknowledge her efforts to live her own life. Yet, still, they would never excuse Essi from their conversation. “She’s quite fancy to have a job post at Gautarza,” one of the wo

It was like the ruins after the storm, for Victor to see the girls in an awkward stillness. Without their words, Victor begins to understand that there were issues that probably spurred out between Essi and Gwyneth. Girls were always like this, having their way to confront and reconcile with each other. "Is there anything wrong?" he asked to ensure that the ground is safe for him to meddle with them. "No, nothing," Essi responded but proceeded to the kitchen after the gesture to let Victor sit. "Well, I guess we are better now," Gwyneth forced a smile while tucking the hem of her skirt into the rattan chair. It is her way to distract herself although it is vain. Her offer received no reaction from Essi. It is embarrassing but making the situation worse shall never be her option. Gwyneth repeated how sorry she was for insulting Essi a while ago. She could have refrained herself but it is done now. Both of them are doomed to the same boat loaded with the luggage of their issues. Vict

Familiar eyes always last and the fierce one from Essi is maybe influenced by the heat of the rising sun. Or maybe by the deep thoughts in her, that scream through the windows of her soul. Riley, as he likes to call himself to be, cannot help but get curious about Essi’s sentiment. Does it still have something to do with her plan to take him as Oneil? Does she find it way too hard? He wanted to tell Essi that she should not worry. For he was also trying to look for ways to check about his past other than Marika’s aid. Yes, he was troubled about being a dumb mutt. How strong those words were! Indeed, he was challenged by the young lady, the very company of Essi who went away already. Her words stirred Riley to wonder what kind of person Oneil was. What was his background? What was his work? Was he a freeloader or a son of a rich man? What if he is not the former as Marika’s parents would satirically blabber at him when they got displeased fits about life and the people around them? Ev

When every day will never be the same to the people of Bayanihan, their very Barangay Captain Arturo Sanchez counted that his nights were always the same. Almost every night, even from a farther distance, he could hear Marika and Riley quarreling about the same thing. However, it was Marika’s voice that traverses through the sky and dooms his residence to a chaotic connection with Riley’s hut. If he was Riley, he would have cut off Marika to stronger arguments to prevent her deplorable fits. He knew that his daughter only throws accusations at the weak link. But the young man does not retaliate. Riley could reason but has never demanded Marika to peace out for the meanwhile. Yet, who is Captain Arturo but a mere father to an already grown woman who can now think on her own? What was best he could do was to spare advice from Marika’s sentence of no adherence. There were moments in rural life that are indeed idyllic. People are feeding their animals, children are sharing household chores, and some were preparing their meals. Gwyneth counted it a warm setting that made her pleased that she chose to stay with Essi. With a cup of milk and a provincial tabloid rationed to them, her morning is perfected. She randomly read out loud special portions in the tabloid that surfaced a contentious quote. “No relationship would like to wait for a busy woman,” Gwyneth read and halted with a strong degree of wonder. She glanced at Essi who was moving back and forth while checking the things she needed for work. “Did you hear what I read, Essi?” “I doubt that. Oneil is the one in my mind while I work though,” Essi replied with her morning brushed voice. It sounded like one of a soprano on a serious low-tone monologue. It may be quite nonchalant but Gwyneth acknowledged the sincerity. “Not just in the office. He’s always in my mind although I have appointme

Essi has always believed that meeting people like the Binici Siblings meant a good thing --that be it in business or social partnerships. But what Karina offers to her is quite different. Her words have stronger meaning underneath their simplicity as if Katrina had been always trying to interfere in Essi and Oneil’s lives. “So you people are just engaged. It means there is still a greater possibility for any of you to quit, right?” she asked Essi with a hint of excitement. Her words simply do not respect the relationship between the two. Essi chose to not pay attention to it. But Katrina was bugging her in another way by trying to set Essi up with Wyath for coffee nothings and casual dinner. “I do not have much time. If this meeting does not make any sense, then I won’t go, Miss Binici,” Essi declined. “My brother is willing to marry the girl he likes,” Katrina inserted just to make the phone call go on. “Really? That’s good for him then,” Essi commented but was about to excuse he

But before she took a step, Wyath went to her again. “Essi, since it is rare for us to meet, may I ask for your contact number?” Wyath was implying the personal one. “Okay,” Essi said and gave him her number. “But you should also give yours since my phone automatically sets an unknown number as spam.” When they got done exchanging numbers, Katrina went to Wyath to remind him that they must go home now. “Essi, it was nice to meet you. We’ll go ahead for now,” Katrina bid and dragged her brother to their car. “Will you still proceed to the hotel madame?” her chauffeur asked. “Yes, you can also take your time to enjoy things around,” Essi grinned and reminded him ab

It is the actual bidding night. With the preparation of the lights and the friendly interiors of the Legalion Action House, Essi knows this night shall be friendly to her vision. She takes a simple white dress with puff sleeves and white heels. She takes a silk cloth as her headband. Her appearance for the night is elegance mingled with youth and enthusiasm.“Welcome, Madame Essi,” the guard said upon recognizing her card. “This way please.”Essi followed the red carpet leading them to the Jewel Auction Hall No. 1. It is her first time to join an auction by herself. Oftentimes, she would just accompany a family member when they would like to purchase something from the auction. She continued walking around and not recognizing any familiar faces around the auction hall except Wyath. Wyath quickly noticed her too when he turned around. He approached her with a smile. He even introduced his sister to her.“This is my sister, Katrina. She’s the reason why we’d like to buy some of the Maes

Essi had a simple target in heading to Normandy. The Legalion Auction House announced its 25th jewelry auction. Essi was never attentive towards auctions. But this one sets a great importance in her agenda because it was the jewelry collection made by Maestro Marco. She had two important target items because of the discovery that she arrived upon studying the decoration and details on the jewelry portfolio of her grandmother Priscilla. Two pieces of jewelry are no more in the possession of the Paulsson household. It suddenly became included in the auction series of the Legalion because it is made by Maestro Marco. The first piece was dubbed as Ingrid’s because Essi’s grandfather had especially commissioned the jewel maker to make a bluebird-inspired jewelry as a ready gift for his daughter once she will be brought to the world. Victor has to weigh many company concerns. First, for the Amyrgia-Gautarza. Second, to Essi’s Gautarza Company and third, to the Mercator Group. Concerning the first two, he can see the clear directions on how the owners would take their future paths. But for the Mercator Group, he couldn’t see exactly where it even errs or go on correctly. He became an instant breadwinner with a clear source of income because the other Mercators in their humble barn house have to lie low for a while. His great ally on the discussion for the Mercator Group was his father.“Our hope in raising this alarm is to the interim chairman himself,” Paulo said. “If only he could also be cooperative to us.”“I don’t see any reason though that he wouldn’t,” Victor stated. “That is why I talked to him about the deliberation of a new policy concerning the selling and purchase of shares.”“What do you see is the problem about the shares then?”“I see some problems of the old policy. Sometimes, amid all trials, one couldn’t help but wonder how others felt for them. It was in Victor especially when he regarded how Mr. Arlelle must have reacted to the fate that chased the Mercators. Yet, hoping to be always in his favor, Victor could only remain in silent and work with perseverance. It must have been a good asset that he was not heard as a Mercator because no one would chase him in the hopes to scoop out a splice of an information that can serve a cup of tea. Victor was on his way back to Arlelle’s office, bringing the reports about the recent confirmations he received on his email. But while he was outside the office, he heard some key people of Amyrgia-Gautarza.“How come that you still keep him sir? Is he not a member of the Mercators? It is quite unsettling.”“How can I not when he is still officially a part of the Amyrgia-Gautarza? And what has he done then that he should be fired out?”“But he is a Mercator.”Victor couldn’t deny that maybe in the business wor

He marched slowly until he could see what is inside the box.“Is this your last jewel that you would sell, Latifa?” he asked because he couldn’t recognize the jewel. It was pretty understandable. Because he was never able to see this ring right from its bidding and until his wife’s death. It was Paulo who kept it because Grant didn’t know about the many things that his wife bought. His daughter-in-law didn’t answer yet but his recognition was also now to the visitor. “Your highness,” Grant said. After all, she has compassion to this lad who was also alike to her, almost impossible to receive the crown.
