*Michael*

I was walking down the hallway on my way to the upper deck when I heard a loud burst of laughter. I sighed in frustration; this was supposed to be a quiet escape from work, yet my yacht was full of a bunch of twenty-year-olds.

I had invited Lauren, my daughter, as a way to spend a bit of time together this summer, partly out of guilt for not being around much when she was younger.

Lauren asked if she could bring her new boyfriend along, and I agreed without much thought. I had met Todd earlier in the week over breakfast, and he seemed like a good kid. He worked in finance for his father’s financial firm in New York, so we immediately had so much to talk about.

He was very complimentary of my recent purchase of Explore Air, the second airline that I now owned. It truly was a good purchase, and I had big plans for expansion.

I was impressed that Lauren had picked someone who was putting down roots, and he seemed like a stable choice. Lauren had never introduced me to a boyfriend before, so I was taking their relationship seriously.

Having her boyfriend join us would be an easy way for me to get to know him better and also give me a little more time for myself, which was probably a little selfish.

It’s not that I didn’t love my daughter; I found it difficult spending time with my daughter; we weren’t very close. I had only found out she existed fourteen years ago, and trying to connect with a ten-year-old with whom I had nothing in common had not been easy.

It didn’t help that I had bought her everything she could possibly ask for–for the last fourteen years. In the beginning, I did it to make up for missing the first ten years of her life, but after that, it just became easier than dealing with her when she didn’t get what she wanted.

Lauren was now a spoiled and entitled twenty-four-year-old with no plans for her life other than partying and spending as much money as possible.

In classic Lauren fashion, my agreement to let her bring her boyfriend along turned into her filling each one of my guest rooms with her rich and arrogant friends.

She had also hired a DJ against my wishes, but after a hysterical outburst where she accused me of not loving her, she got her way, just like always.

So my quiet and relaxing vacation with my daughter quickly turned into me hosting a summer-long party. Before I headed to my stateroom, I figured I better play the welcoming host and go up to greet Lauren and her friends.

As I turned a corner, I bumped into someone. The woman had her head down, so all I could see was her wavy hair, a deep red shade I had never seen before.

“I am so sorry; I should have been watching where I was going,” the red-haired beauty said. When her eyes finally met mine, I was surprised at the color. They were so light blue that they almost looked grey, but it looked like she was fighting tears.

“Are you okay, miss?” I said in response. I felt dumb as soon as the words were out of my mouth. She, very obviously, was not okay.

“Yes. I’m just heading back to my room, uh sir,” she said as she straightened up, obviously not wanting to be caught crying.

“Oh right,” I said, suddenly realizing that she called me sir, so she must be one of the maids.

I started picking through my memories, trying to remember when I’d hired her. Reggie must have been the one to interview her because I surely would have remembered a woman so captivating.

“Before you do that, would you head up to my stateroom and unpack my luggage? I am afraid it has been delivered later than usual. I had some business I had to attend to before leaving port, and I did not get here as early as I would have liked.”

“Oh…I am… Uh…” she started staring at the floor, and her cheeks flushed slightly.

I stood waiting for her response. I thought it was cute how flustered she was; Perhaps it was because I made her nervous. That was pretty common with new hires, but oddly, she made me feel a bit flustered, which was completely uncommon.

“Yes,” she stammered, her face flushing an even darker shade of pink.

“Thank you so much,” I said with a smile, leaving a pause in hopes that she would tell me her name. She turned quickly and headed in the opposite direction.

I couldn’t help but stare as she walked away. She had one of those figures that required a double take to fully appreciate. As she slipped around a corner and out of sight, I sighed, knowing I needed to make an appearance upstairs. I continued that way.

I walked out onto the deck, where a large dining table was placed and decorated with an extravagant centerpiece. The stars reflected over the ocean and created a stunning backdrop for my daughter's dinner party.

I was really impressed at how well the staff had done at transforming this space, most likely with very particular instructions from Lauren.

“Daddy!” Lauren screamed as I made my way out onto the deck. She screamed a lot, but I noticed most girls her age did. It looked as though their dinner party was just wrapping up; waiters were clearing away everything from the table. Lauren ran over and hugged me.

“Hello, sweetheart,” I said and kissed the top of her head. “Is everything going alright?”

“Everything has gone perfectly so far. The yacht is so awesome; I think my friends could die out of jealousy.”

I remained silent, not knowing how to respond to Laurens's need to be the envy of other people. I would leave figuring that out to Lauren’s mother, Marmie. We hardly spoke other than when she needed money from me, which was more often than I’d like.

“Good evening, Mr. Astor,” Todd said as he made his way over and shook my hand.

“It is good to see you again, Todd,” I said.

“Likewise. I’d like to discuss a real estate investment I am working on for a client, when you have the time. I would love to get your opinion.”

“Of course. We can talk about it tomorrow night over some drinks.” I answered.

“I look forward to it, Mr. Astor.”

I continued to greet Lauren’s friends and make small talk for as long as I could manage. I made my exit by lifting a glass of champagne in the air and toasting, “To an amazing summer.”

Lauren’s friends echoed my toast, followed by cheering and chatting amongst themselves. I slipped out and headed over to a hidden elevator, which went up one more floor where my stateroom and private deck were located.

I hoped that the group would make their way to their rooms soon. I was exhausted and could not wait to slip into sleep.

I opened the double doors to my stateroom and was slightly disappointed that the maid I had met earlier was already gone. My suitcase was missing from where I left it at the end of the bed, so she must have come and gone while I was greeting my guests.

I immediately made my way to the bar cart and poured myself a glass of whiskey. Taking a long sip of my drink, I couldn’t stop my mind from wandering back to the maid I’d run into. Her black dress fit her slender frame perfectly and showed off her amazingly long legs.

It’d been a long time since someone had caught my attention as she did. She did seem much younger than me, though. I wasn’t sure that would be a problem.

I walked over to the screen mounted on the wall next to the door, and at the press of a button, the wall of windows at the far end of the room slid open, eliminating the barrier between my living room and private deck.

That feature was one of the main reasons I purchased this particular yacht. I thought there would be nothing better than feeling the ocean breeze and hearing the waves even while hiding away in my stateroom.

I stepped onto my deck and could see the dinner party continuing without me one deck below. The muffled sounds of conversation and laughing were the only sound drifting up to me. I sat in a deck chair and threw back the rest of my whiskey.

I watched the white foamy wake following the yacht as we moved through the water. It was the only way I could tell we were moving as the sky darkened to a deep blue. I closed my eyes and imagined a pair of eyes staring back at me.

A pair of enchanting grey eyes.

I was mortified that he clearly thought I was a member of the staff rather than a guest on the yacht. However, I supposed I looked nothing like the typical guests.“Yes,” I finally said, deciding it was easier than trying to explain the mix-up. He thanked me and continued standing there staring at me, probably making sure I was actually going to go unpack for him. I quickly turned and headed back down the long hallway. I must hav

*Shelby*I woke up the next morning refreshed and excited about my first day on the ocean. Sometime during the early morning hours, someone had slipped an itinerary under my door. I couldn’t help the pang of dread I felt reading that Lauren planned the whole day out for me and that I would be spending all day with Todd.At least I had a few hours before I was expected at the poolside brunch starting at 10:00. So I called down for coffee to be sent to my room, and as I waited, I went to the sliding door to the balcony and opened it to let the sound of the waves take over my room. I got dressed in a pair of jean shorts and my favorite forest green tank top. Before I had time to finish my makeup, there was a knock at my door announcing my coffee had arrived. “Good morning, Miss Shelby,” said the pool boy Lauren had snapped at the day before. He was carrying a coffee tray holding a glass coffee decanter, cream and sugar, and a plate full of fruit. I loved that each

*Michael*As I rounded the corner, I was surprised to see Shelby’s red hair flowing off the back of the lounge chair. She looked so relaxed that I felt guilty invading her solace, but I couldn’t leave now. If she noticed me leaving, I’d make an even bigger fool of myself than I’d done the night before. “It looks like you found my hiding place. You must have had the same idea," I said, and her gray eyes fluttered open. “Mr. Astor!” she said, sitting up and turning to look at me.I sat down on the lounge chair next to her and laid back. I was taking full advantage of the moment to make a better impression. “Shelby, you can call me Michael.”“Mr. Astor, I don’t know if…” Shelby started.“Please, I insist,” I said before she could finish.“Alright,” she answered with a small smile. “I am so sorry if I took your hiding spot. I needed some time to myself, so your intern, Reggie, told me how to get here.”“You can stay as long as you’d like. D

*Shelby*I woke up on the fourth day of our trip to a fantastic view. I wrapped a robe around myself and made my way to the balcony. The yacht was no longer moving; we must have come into port sometime during the night. We were docked at a tropical island with white sand beaches lined with palm trees. I could barely hold back a squeal of excitement; Lauren told me yesterday that we would be going on a private luxury catamaran dolphin tour. I was finally going to get my wish of seeing a dolphin in the wild. It would even be worth being stuck on a smaller boat with Todd all day.I had become very creative in finding ways to avoid Todd each day. I still attended every planned activity but managed to sneak away and spend some time relaxing. On a few occasions, Reggie would save me from talking to the other members of the group. I’d also had a few decent conversations with Alison, the woman in our group with short black hair. I liked her far bett

*Shelby*Michael held out his hand to me, and I took it. He helped me off of the swim deck and onto the back of the jet ski. “Let’s go find those dolphins,” he said. We took off, and I had to grab around his waist to stay on the jet ski. I nearly jumped when his skin met mine. It was only then that I realized that Michael was shirtless. I instinctually wanted to slide closer to him, to press my body against his muscular back.I constantly had to work to fight that urge. ‘He is your friend’s dad!’ I screamed at myself internally. I switched my attention back to the water. The water was crystal clear and calm. Looking off the side of the jet ski, I could see to the bottom in some places. We passed over colorful sea life that was so captivating that it almost took my mind off of Michael’s muscular back.Almost.“There is a cove just up here where the dolphins are known to spend time. He had insisted that he would teach me how to drive on our way back.“Just take it nice and slow out of the cove, you can get up to a higher speed when we get to open water, and you feel more comfortable,” he continued.I could feel his warm breath on the side of my neck, and it sent goosebumps all across my body. I imagined his lips pressing to my neck where his breath was warming. I wondered what his hands would feel like on my body.“Shelby?”“Oh, um, sorry, what?” I said, pulling myself out of my daydream. “Are you ready to go?” Michael said with a small chuckle. I was glad he was sitting behind me, so he couldn’t see my face turn red at what I was just imagining.“Yes, I think so,” I said with slight hesitation. “Don’t worry, I’m right here,” he assured me. “Just take it slow.”I eased

*Shelby*I walked out of Amorebelle wearing a new outfit with light pink clothing bags weighing down each arm. I could not remember a time in my life when I had gotten this many new clothes at one time.I also had a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that these clothes cost more than I made in an entire year. The saleswomen Jane and McKenzie wouldn’t let me look at the price tags on anything, but as they were ringing up my picks, I caught a glimpse of the total on the computer screen. I didn’t know how I would ever be able to pay Michael back for this shopping trip. I also couldn’t help but wonder how often he did this for women. Jane, who’d worked at the shop the longest, had recognized him when we walked in the door.I didn’t have time to contemplate this because I noticed a maid I recognized from the yacht. She made her way to me and started relieving me of my bags. I made sure to keep the bag with my dress and shoes for the evening. “Miss

I’m so sorry I have been so busy,” I said, smiling at my fantastic boyfriend. I really missed him, but with graduation so close, I had to put all of my efforts into studying.“I’m glad you finally found some time for me,” Todd said in a flat tone. I guessed I deserved that, but the comment still stung.“Where do you want to go eat? I heard there is a great new sushi place just a few blocks over,” I said, trying to switch the mood to a more positive one.“Yeah, that works,” Todd muttered as he pulled out his phone to send a text.We started walking over, and I couldn’t help but feel like something was off, but I relaxed as Todd’s fingers locked with mine.“So, how is work going?” I asked. Todd had graduated with his Bachelor’s degree the year before and started working for his dad’s financial firm after that. “It has been great

I’d been an attorney at Stockton and Associates for five months now, and just last month, I was promoted from my tiny cubicle in the corner to my very own office.I’d framed photographs of Michael and me at our wedding, at a castle in Ireland on our honeymoon, and of us in Greece from our most recent vacation. I couldn't help but imagine another picture frame of a beautiful little baby, swaddled up tight in a hospital bassinet sitting next to the rest. Michael and I had taken a more active approach to try to have a baby. I took my temperature every morning to track my fertility window, and our bathroom was littered with boxes and boxes of ovulation tests. It seemed like the majority of my free time I now spent thinking of our future family. I even had an entire nursery planne

*Shelby*I woke up and stretched across the king-size bed. It felt so strange to be in such a large bed all by myself. I lay there, taking in the unfamiliar surroundings of the hotel room. Then the realization hit me; it was my wedding day. The day I was going to become Mrs. Shelby Astor.I sat bolt upright, and let my feet hit the floor. In one swift motion, I was up and taking leaps across the room with a little squeal. I swung open the door and rushed into the main room of the hotel suite.“Aubs! Lin! Get up! I’m getting married today!” I squealed.Within a few seconds, Aubrey was up, rubbing her eyes as she opened the door to her private room. All we heard from Lin’s room was a sleepy moan, which made me laugh loudly.“I know that some brides get cold feet on their wedding day, but something tells me we don’t have to worry about that with you,” Aubrey said, yawning a little.“I can’t believe it’s actually here, Aubs. While he screwed the lid into place, he leaned over and kissed me quickly on the lips.“I’m so sorry I don’t have time to say much in the way of a goodbye, but thank you for breakfast. I had an emergency meeting with investors pop up last minute,” Michael said, slipping his arms through his sport coat.“That’s okay, I understand. Will I see you for dinner?” I asked.“Yes, you will. I’ll make sure I’m home by five at the latest. *Shelby*Lauren looked… humbled.Even her clothes were telling. She wore a long, demure skirt and a blouse that didn’t show a hint of cleavage and covered her arms down to her elbows. No big brand names or luxurious accessories. Her hair also needed a wash.I’d never seen her dress so modestly or look so run-down, and I had an inkling of what she was trying to accomplish by coming here. I stood there, frozen, not knowing what to do. I wasn’t sure Michael would want to see her, and part of me didn’t want Michael’s day to start off with a fight. On the other hand, I couldn’t make those decisions for him.“Come in,” I said, stepping aside to let her pass. I closed the door and gestured for her to sit in the adjacent living room, just as I heard Michael’s quick steps running down the stairs. “What smells so good? My mouth is watering!
