“I am really disappointed in you this time, Emery. You have been quite careless with your work for the past few days. I know things have been tough for you but you have to get serious with your work.” Emery’s boss and the senior lawyer of Fortis Legal, Colin Whitaker said to Emery.
Looking down at her fingers once, she tried to get a hold of herself. Most of the people already knew who she was and how she was stripped off from her father’s inheritance. Some people pitied her while others were ruthless.
“Believe me sir. I have done nothing this time. This article is nothing but a complete fake. Someone must be trying to deliberately slander us.” Emery blurted out.
“I know this. But we still can’t deny all the things written in this article. Some of our past clients did get a divorce because of some of the clauses in the contract. So I would still suggest you be vigilant.”
Emery nodded her head. Despite all this, she knew in her heart that she disregarded her job.
“Don’t worry, sir. I will get my team to work on it right away.” Emery replied while looking at him with determination in her eyes.
The man sitting in front of her flared his nostrils and said, "Working on it isn’t good now. The damage has already been done. Our clients are jumping to other firms and we are losing our reputation. Do you understand how much damage it can cause to our firm?"
Emery looked down now realising how much damage had been done just because of her remarks.
Emery’s jaw tightened as she blurted out. “I understand the situation, sir. You don’t have to worry, I will make sure to settle this matter as soon as possible.”
Whitaker sighed as he pinched the bridge of his nose. "That’s not all. There’s an event tonight—the Mayor’s Gala. I’ve arranged for you to attend."
Emery frowned, not following. "You… want me to go to a gala? Tonight?"
Whitaker’s gaze turned steely. "Not just any gala. You’ll be accompanying Mr. Harper."
Her heart plummeted. "Darren?"
"Yes. He’s already agreed to it. Think of it as a chance to do some damage control." He waved a hand dismissively. "Smile, charm the room, and make them forget every word of that article. Darren’s a big name, and with his endorsement, you can pull us out of this mess.”
Emery resisted the urge to groan. "Right…"
"Make sure everyone in that room knows that these rumors are fake. And if you see any reporters…" He trailed off, his expression hardening. "You know what to do.”
"Understood," Emery replied, hiding her unease.
"Good." He glanced at her one last time before turning to leave. "Get it done, Emery. Or this could be the beginning of a very different future for you at this firm."
Once Whitaker was out of the office, Emery sank into her chair, her hands gripping the edge of her desk. Her team was scrambling to erase every trace of that article, but she knew the damage was already spreading.
Emery hadn’t even had a chance to catch her breath when Jenna burst through the office door, grinning like she’d just hit the jackpot.
“Oh my God, Emery!” Jenna gushed, bouncing on her toes. “I heard you’re going to the Mayor’s Gala with Darren Harper himself! Do you have any idea how many girls would kill to be in your shoes?”
Emery forced a smile, her fingers tapping against her desk in a calm rhythm to hide the sudden tension. “I… uh, hadn’t thought about it that way, Jenna.”
Jenna leaned in, eyes wide with excitement. “Are you kidding? He’s New York’s most eligible billionaire bachelor! You know what they say about him, right?”
Emery raised an eyebrow, feigning curiosity. “What do they say?”
“Oh, all kinds of things! They call him a heartbreaker, a ruthless businessman… and apparently, he never dates anyone for more than a few months. Rumor is, he’s impossible to tame.” Jenna wiggled her eyebrows. “And yet, every woman still tries.”
Emery nodded thoughtfully, trying not to let Jenna see how much her words stung. She didn’t need to be reminded of Darren’s reputation — she’d lived it, firsthand.
Jenna leaned against Emery's desk, sighing dreamily. “Senior told us to get you something amazing to wear for tonight. We need a dress that’ll knock Darren’s socks off! How about we head to that boutique on Fifth? They’ve got new arrivals, and one of them has your name on it.”
Emery forced a laugh, hoping it sounded as casual as she intended. “I think you’re a little too invested in this, Jenna. It’s just work, you know?”
Jenna scoffed. “Oh, please. Work or not, there’s no harm in turning heads. Besides,” she added with a mischievous smile, “maybe you’ll be the one to break his streak and turn that ‘untamable’ Darren Harper into a ‘one-woman man.’”
“Yeah, right,” Emery replied, barely keeping a straight face. “I’m just there for damage control.”
Jenna looped her arm through Emery’s. “Damage control in a dress that’ll make half the room jealous? Perfect plan. Now, come on, let’s get you ready for the night of your life.”
Emery sighed as Jenna dragged her out of the office with an almost unstoppable force. As much as she wanted to protest, she knew she couldn’t escape. Not from Jenna’s determination, and definitely not from the looming presence of Darren Harper at the Mayor’s Gala.
The boutique Jenna insisted on was nothing short of extravagant. The sleek glass doors opened to a world of sparkling gowns, delicate lace, and bold fabrics that screamed luxury. Emery immediately felt out of place, her simple work attire clashing against the high-end atmosphere.
“Alright!” Jenna clapped her hands, her excitement palpable. “We need something stunning, something classy, and most importantly, something Darren Harper won’t be able to ignore.”
“Jenna…” Emery started, her voice tinged with warning.
Jenna waved her off. “Don’t ‘Jenna’ me. You need to make an impression tonight. It’s not just about the firm; it’s about you showing everyone what they lost when they underestimated you.”
A small smile tugged at Emery’s lips despite herself. Jenna could be overbearing, but sometimes her enthusiasm was contagious.
“Fine,” Emery relented, scanning the racks. Her eyes landed on a sleek, midnight blue gown with a plunging neckline and subtle beadwork along the bodice. It was elegant yet bold, and something about it felt… right.
“Oh, that’s the one!” Jenna exclaimed, snatching the dress off the rack before Emery could second-guess herself. “Try it on. Now.”
Minutes later, Emery stepped out of the fitting room, her reflection catching her off guard. The gown hugged her in all the right places, its tailored fit emphasizing her curves without being overly revealing. The rich blue complemented her skin tone, and the way the fabric flowed as she moved made her feel powerful.
“Wow,” Jenna breathed, her eyes wide. “You look like you just stepped out of a movie. Darren’s not going to know what hit him.”
Emery turned back to the mirror, studying her reflection. She wasn’t sure if she wanted Darren to notice her or not. Their history was complicated, to say the least, and she didn’t want to reopen old wounds. But tonight wasn’t about personal feelings; it was about saving her career.
“I’ll take it,” Emery said, her voice firm.
~ At the Gala:
“Behave.”
Darren’s deep, commanding voice cut through the low hum of conversation as they stepped out of the sleek black car. The sharpness in his tone made Emery stiffen, her fingers clutching her small clutch tighter.
She turned to him, her eyes narrowing. “Excuse me?”
Darren didn’t reply to her after that but tightened his hold around her waist before entering the banquet hall.
All eyes turned toward them as soon as they were inside.
Emery could feel everyone’s eyes at them as they moved across the room, while Darren’s hand still wrapped around Emery’s small back.
“Who is she?” someone whispered from their left.
“She must be someone important if Darren brought her,” another voice chimed in.
Emery’s cheeks burned, but she kept her head high, her heels clicking confidently against the marble floor.
“Seems like everyone here is curious about you.” Emery commented.
But before Darren could respond, one of his business associates came to them with a wide smile plastered on his face. “Mr. Harper, it’s good to see you!”
His eyes then turned towards Emery, as he tilted his head slightly before asking, “And who’s this stunning companion of yours?”
Darren’s nostrils flared slightly, but Emery replied while putting a polite smile on her face. “Emery Hart, lawyer at Fortis legal.”
“Impressive! Beauty with brains.” Jonathan said as he took her hand in his hand, “It’s a pleasure, Ms. Hart.”
Emery smiled graciously before pulling her hand out of his grip, “Thank you, Mr. Reid. It’s a pleasure to meet you as well.”
As the men began chatting, Emery saw her chance. She subtly excused herself and slipped into the crowd before Darren could stop her.
Wandering through the room, she tried to find people who would be of any use to her tonight.Soon she spotted a familiar face: Eric Langford, the young and handsome CEO of a top publishing company.Eric’s eyes lit up when he saw her. “Ms. Hart,” he greeted kindly, stepping closer. “It’s been quite a while since I last saw you.”“The feeling’s mutual, Mr. Langford,” Emery answered as she shook his hand.“Eric, please,” he amended with a pleasant smile. “And might I say, you look absolutely stunning tonight.”Emery felt the blush creep up on her cheeks. “Thank you, Eric. You’re too kind.”“Kind, but honest,” he said easily, his eyes never leaving hers. “Would you care to dance?”Her eyes flickered toward the corner of the room, where Darren was deep in talk but still very much aware of her. A part of her hesitated, but then she thought of his earlier order.Behave.Smiling, Emery put her hand in Eric’s. “I’d love to.”As they moved onto the dance floor, Darren’s eyes darkened. His grip
Eric got up from his seat. Giving everyone a fierce glare, he turned around and left from there.Emery had been looking at the scene in front of her quietly all along, but soon the cheers of people around her brought her back to reality. “Striptease! Striptease! Striptease!” Everyone chanted these words like all of them had just won and now wanted a prize. Emery's eyes widened as soon as she realized what they all meant. She looked at Darren helplessly, hoping that he wouldn’t be expecting her to striptease in front of everyone, but seeing the smirk dangling on his lips, she got scared. “What are you waiting for now?” “Hurry up!"Some of the men surrounding them shouted, which triggered Emery, but she calmly replied to them, “The match was between Mr. Harper and Mr. Langford, and it doesn’t concern me in any way.” Darren’s smirk deepened as he took a few steps toward her. “But Miss Hart, the thing was already decided."Emery stepped back, but as she could move further back, Dar
"Go on, then," Darren said in a tone as informal as if they were talking about the weather. But the seriousness of those words was anything but casual.Emery gripped the doorknob tightly, as though it might prevent her from slipping away. She could feel the heat of Darren’s presence behind her, slowly closing the distance between them. Her mind screamed at her to run, but her legs felt like lead.Darren’s footsteps were slow and deliberate, like a predator toying with its prey. Her heart beat faster with each step he took. Him being there made her feel small without trying. He asked Emery, "Where do you think you're going?" He said this in a voice that was dark, funny, and way too calm.Even she could tell she was lying by the way she spoke: "I wasn't going anywhere." Her body was frozen, her pulse pounding, and every sense screamed for her to flee. She tried but failed.Darren stopped just inches away, and she couldn't see anything around her because of how tall he was. He didn't mo
“Come on! Tell already! I want to know all the details. What happened there?” Jenna said excitedly clapping her hands. She looked at Emery with eager eyes sitting in front of her. Emery blinked forcing herself to stop remembering the last night’s scene. “Nothing happened,” Emery replied shortly and tried her best to Jenna pouted, as she didn’t get the answer she wanted, “You’re no fun, Em. Fine, don’t tell me. I will not tell you anything from now on too.” Emery shook her head at her childish nature. "Come on!" Spill already! I want all of the juicy facts. "What happened?" Jenna demanded, almost leaping in her chair.Emery blinked, attempting to break free from the spiral of recollections from the previous night. Darren strolled around his desk, leaning gently against it, arms folded, and gazing at Emery."Forget what Camila said," he added, his voice calm yet firm. "Don't add any of that nonsense to the contract."Emery blinked, caught off guard. "What do you mean?""I mean, don't mention the villa, the car, or any of her little demands."Leave the prenuptial agreement as is."She stared at him, unsure if he was sincere. "Are you sure?" "Won't she be angry?"Darren shrugged as if it were no big deal. "That is the point. I want her to back out."Emery's eyebrows rose. "Back out? Do you want her to end their engagement?"Exactly." He smirked again, calm and assured. "Emery, you're intelligent. I'm convinced you'll figure out how to make it happen."She hesitated, focussing her gaze on him. "Why should I help you with this? What is in it for me?Darren pushed off the desk and stepped closer till they were nearly face to face. "I understand you want something. Something you've been trying to have
Darren pushed himself a little back as he acting like nothing happened, “Not at all. Come, join us.” Just after saying that Darren turned his attention back to Camila. Emery felt a bit uneasy seeing that as she felt nothing but a mere pawn in the game which Darren was playing. She always tried her best to get what Darren actually wanted but that man was nothing but a puzzle who always forced her in thinking what his next step is going to be. All of them ate their dinner in silence. None of them spoke anything after that. And soon all of them got up from their seats. “Well, I hope Miss Hart is doing what I asked her to do?” Damian raised his eye brows slightly as he said with a wide smirk plastered on his face. Emery forced a professional smile on her face as she replied, “Sure!”Walking out of there she finally let out the breath she was holding in front of those people. Emery’s fingers trembled as she grabbed the USB. “Why are you helping me?” The man looked down before he said, “Let’s just say I owed your father, and this is the only way I can repay him. Emery knew Nick didn’t have enough potential to run a company, and she knew sooner or later the company would go bankrupt, but one thing she didn’t know was that Nick didn’t just want to make the company bankrupt; instead, he wanted to sell the company. His words hit her like a slap. “What do you mean?”The man ignored her question before saying, “You will see for yourself.”Just as he said that, he moved back and soon vanished from Emery’s sight. Emery went back to her apartment with that USB, and reaching there, she plugged it into her laptop. “I hope it’s nothing too bad.” Her heart was heavy not knowing what was coming ahead of her. Opening her laptop, she saw various files with bank statements,
“Stop!” Emery blurted out as she tried her best to stay still. Her body didn’t dare to move while her heart was racing. Darren always had this effect on her; he had an ability to command her without raising his voice. It wasn’t just his words; it was his presence. The aura he radiates is far more dangerous, letting everyone around him feel intimidated.Slowly his hand slid to her waist and then to her lower back as he pushed her closer to herself, not leaving any space between them. “Do you know what I hate most about this dress?” he huskily asked, whispering near her ear. “I…” Emery tried saying something, but no words were able to come out of her mouth. “It makes me want to cancel tonight,” his hand moved further down, and Emery felt her body heating up, “so I can keep you here, where I don’t have to share you with anyone.”Her knees felt weak. If not for Darren's hold on her body, she would have fallen down up until now. “We…” She mustered up all her courage as she put both h
Emery's heart tightened, it seemed her ill fate was about to ruin her evening. She had barely escaped rape and now she felt like a fugitive running from the cops. Darren's scent invaded her nostrils giving her solace, something she never expected. He somehow understood her fears, and she felt lucky he came at the right moment even though her words had portrayed something totally different. She had lost both her parents and right now she gladly acknowledges herself as an orphan with no family background. "What if he hadn't arrived at the right moment?" The unsettling thought escaped her lips, a manifestation of her inner turmoil. Emery dismissed the notion, shaking off the lingering fear. His timely intervention was all that mattered. As she trailed behind him, his outstretched arms enveloped her, offering a sense of security. She revisited his words about her stepbrother, and a familiar sense of unease settled in. Emery was well-acquainted with Nick's unsavory reputation; he had a
Camilla burst into laughter as she read the news headline. "Bloggers will stop at nothing to sensationalize unverified news," she said, shaking her head. The news of her marriage was all over the news. Her face broadened with a smile of satisfaction. Everything was about falling in place. Sitting on the beach chair in the yard, she felt a cool breeze blowing through her skin. It felt very comforting. “Ma’am, the sun is down.” A maid said bowing in respect. She smiled, waving her off, she was a fan of nature and right now she wanted a natural effect that came with swimming. Camilia wondered who had let the media on the news. The positive reactions she was getting from her fans gave her a giddy feeling of happiness. Life to her was perfect, and in a few days, she would be on top of her game. She loosened the straps of her dress and headed towards the pool for a refreshing swim. The butler approached her, handing her a glass of fruit juice, complete with a straw – the same luxurious
Emery tensed slightly because of his words. She tried her best to mask her discomfort as she managed to keep her polite professional smile. “Of course. I understand. But I think we’ve covered the key points here.”He chuckled, but Emery felt weird because of his laugh. He was definitely not giving the right vibes. He said, “Not quite. Why don’t we continue this conversation somewhere more private? I have a suite upstairs where we won’t be interrupted.”The suggestion sent a jolt of unease through her. “I don’t think that would be necessary, I’ve said everything I came here to say.”Rourke’s smile widened like he wanted to play with her more, “You’re agood negotiator, aren’t you? I like that. But I insist. A private discussion is always more productive.”She was just about to protest further when he stood up and gestured towards the side door leading her out of the room. His whole aura was giving creepy vibes to Emery but she knew if she caused any scene there, he would use that to g
Emery nodded as she tried her best to preparing herself mentally. “Be ready by seven,” Darren added as his eyes swept over her again. “And wear something professional. No distractions.”Her cheeks burned at the subtle jab.She tried her best to hold her ground. “Anything else?”Leaning back on his chair, Darren smirked. His expressions softened into something more thoughtful. “Just one thing,” He puased for a moment before his voice turned into a warning, Don’t forget your deal with me and if any issue occurs you can come to me immediately.”“I will,” she said nodding her head. Their eyes locked for a mere moment before Darren turned his face to the side and said, “Good, I’ll handle the arrangements. You just be ready.”Darren leaned back in his chair as his fingers started to tap rhythmically on the side armrest. His behaviour with Emery was always like he was planning something.
