They say when you die, your life flashes before your eyes: a series of events that were important and meaningless; events that shaped and broke you.
The only thing I saw was the ethereal blue of his eyes. The way they gazed at me with such concern. Concern for a perfect stranger. It was all I saw in the darkness that held me captive. There was nothing…. nothing but the blue of his eyes - just those blue eyes in that endless darkness.
Time was meaningless. I could have been there for a decade or three seconds and I would never know the difference. Time, along with every other sense, was non-existent. There was no sensory input of any kind. I wasn’t asleep or awake. I simply was.
I don’t know how long I layed there till my senses came back, one after the other. Sound was the first to return. I could hear my shallow breathing in the utter quiet. Touch came soon after. I was laying on a hard cool surface, my naked body covered by nothing other than a soft cloth. Slowly, I opened my eyes to be blinded by the whiteness of the room. I cautiously sat up and tied the black sheet around me.
I inspected my skin and was shocked not to find burn marks and blisters. My hands went to my dark locks to find the waves undamaged and soft. A slight glow to my skin caught my attention, causing me to move my hands to inspect it. I was amazed, yet slightly scared that when the light caught my skin a certain way, it seemed almost translucent and glowing, like fire. As if there was fire dancing just underneath my skin.
“Ah, my child. It’s good to see you awake.” A deep soothing voice spoke into the quiet. My head snapped in the direction to see two men standing in the corner of the room.
The room seemed to be made of smoke that would shift and change if I looked too closely at it. The man who spoke was beautiful, achingly so. He was tall, with golden hair and skin. His face was flawless and almost too perfect. His eyes were a fiery cold green and what drew all my attention to him were the ethereal white wings spreading from his back.
The man beside him was the dark to his light. He was slightly taller than the first man, standing at 6’3”. He had a lean muscular build, broad shoulders and a strong jaw. His hair was as black as night, framing his face and making his grey eyes stand out. The wings coming out of his back were black; so black they shone with rainbows, like oil on water.
“Where am I? Who are you?” I was surprised to find that my voice was clear. I stared at them in shock, my mind barely comprehending what I was seeing.
“You know who we are my child, or more importantly, what we are.” The white winged man smiled at me gently as he walked towards me.
“No. That’s not possible. It can’t be.” I stood from the table quickly, my legs weak from lying so long. “I’m dreaming. I’m at the hospital. I have to be. This is just a drug-induced hallucination,” I whispered as I clutched the sheet closer to me.
“No my child, you are not dreaming. You never made it to the hospital alive. I am sorry my child,” he spoke as he came to stand in front of me and pat my hair soothingly.
“No... I’m - but he - I’m dead,” I choked out as the panic rose like bile at the back of my throat, and tears sprung to my eyes.
“No, you are not dead. You are stuck in between. You flatlined on the way to the hospital. They managed to bring you back but you slipped into a coma. You are still alive my child, but just barely,” the man explained, taking a step back.
“So… I’m still alive... I can wake up?” I murmured, my voice quivering with an emotion I couldn’t even begin to understand, which only added to my confusion.
“Yes you are dear. And you can go back, or move on. The choice is yours.”
“I can go back? How?”
“A simple choice. If you choose to go back we would like you to work with us. But if you choose to move on, then you will… and your life here is over.”
“What do you mean, work with you?” I was so confused and utterly overwhelmed. I didn’t want to believe this winged man. I didn’t want to believe I was practically dead. That would be way too damaging to the psyche.
“The world is falling into darkness, Haven. Humans are selfish and they only think of themselves. But you, Haven, are different. With no thought of your own safety you rushed into that fire and saved that child. You sacrificed yourself for her. We need more selfless people like you if we are to win this coming war,” the man explained as he slowly paced the room, his presence making it seem small.
“What?!” I squeaked, my voice high with panic. “You want me to help you with a war? But I’m human. I’m nobody.”
“You are not nobody, Haven. You are very important to us. We would like your help. The choice is yours. All you have to do is say ‘yes’ or ‘no’.” He stopped moving and his green eyes bore into mine.
I lowered my gaze to the floor, completely overwhelmed. They needed my help. “They” being Angels. What the hell else would they be? This made no sense. I was beyond confused as I looked up at the man with black wings. Throughout this entire thing he had been silent and his face was expressionless. Now however, his grey eyes sparkled with a silent plea. A plea for what, I had no idea.
In that moment I wasn’t seeing his grey eyes, I was seeing another man’s blue eyes shining with concern for me. It was his blue eyes that prompted me to answer the white winged man.
“If I say yes, what happens?”
“You become like Ezra.” He pointed to the dark winged man beside him. “You will become a Guardian, a warrior and you will do our bidding. There will be people that need to be saved. You will be granted wings like Ezra and he will help you with your tasks. He will watch over you. You will wake in the hospital and go on living your life until we have a need for you.”
I contemplated his word, knowing that I wanted to help. I didn’t want to move on, I wasn’t ready. Mostly I was scared. I took a deep breath and looked up into his green eyes.
“Yes.”
He smiled and placed his left hand on my head. The next thing I knew, my back exploded in white hot searing pain. I screamed and fell onto all fours. Ezra strode forward and placed his hand in the middle of my back. When the rough skin of his fingers touched my back, the pain vanished.
Ezra helped me stand and when I lifted my hand to touch my shoulder blades, my fingers met the softness of feathers. I gasped and turned my head to gaze at the inky blackness of my wings. I stared up at Ezra in wonderment as his emotionless grey eyes held my gaze. He placed the first two fingers of his right hand on my forehead. As soon as he made contact with my skin, my body grew heavy and weak with exhaustion. As I collapsed he caught me, holding me in his arms as once again, darkness claimed me.
This time the darkness didn’t claim me for long. I could hear the beeping of a heart monitor and various other medical equipment. My body felt sore and stiff from lack of movement. My eyelids were heavy as I forced them open, scanning the small room with blurry eyes. When my eyes adjusted to the light I inspected my skin, afraid of what I would find. It was slightly more pink than was normal, and it felt almost overly sensitive and dull at the same time, like my hands had fallen asleep and all my sensations were dulled, but it hurt to move them. There weren't many scars, mostly on the tops of my fingers but not nearly as bad as I expected it to be. My hands then went to my face and I winced as I touched a bandage on my neck that measured to my ear. I closed my eyes at the sudden pain from touching it a little too hard. Next, I put my hands in my hair, feeling some singed and brittle parts; nothing a
“She’s fine, Haven. She had a few burns that have healed nicely. She asked about you all the time when she was here. She comes with her parents once a week to see how you are,” he explained.“I’m glad she’s ok.” I was incredibly happy to know she was healed up,and flattered that she and her parents checked on me.“I have to ask: what made you run into that building, Haven? You could have died,” James asked with a very serious expression.“I don’t know,” I answered honestly. “I heard her screams and cries for help and I had to help her. I didn’t care for my safety, I just wanted to help her.”“You are either incredibly brave or incredibly stupid,” he stated flatly.
For the next few days, my time consisted of strengthening exercises with the doctor and daily visits from James. I told him he didn’t have to come and see me anymore but he insisted. I quickly learnt that James Owen Mathews was a very stubborn man. It was mid afternoon, almost a week since I had woken up in this hospital bed. I lay backwards on my bed, my feet propped up and my head almost hanging off. There wasn’t a lot to do in this room.“What are you doing?” asked a confused voice from the doorway. I tilted my head to see James standing in the doorway with a paper bag and a backpack in his hands.“I’m laying down. What does it look like I’m doing?” I asked rhetorically.“I know that, smartass. I’m asking why you’re laying like th
We passed the time by laughing and joking, having a good time. James was fun to be around. It was easy and comfortable. I didn’t feel like I needed to be ‘on’ all the time. He made me feel at ease. We sat for a little while in silence before another knock brought our attention to the door. A young couple was standing there with a small red-headed girl.“Haven, you’re awake!” the young girl cried, running into the room to stand by my bed.I stared at her in surprise, her pretty green eyes shining up at me. I could see small burn scars on her little arms, which were very minimal compared to what could have happened. I stared at her in surprise, glancing at James and the couple.“H-hi,” I replied, shocked to see her.
The moment I felt my body waking up, I knew I wasn’t in the hospital anymore. I opened my eyes to once again see the white room I woke up in after the fire. This time I was clothed in a small white dress that reached my knees, my wings spilled from my back in inky blackness. I glanced around the room absentmindedly playing with the feathers on my wings, wondering why I was here again.“You are here, my child, because I have need of you.” A deep soothing voice spoke from behind me. I turned already knowing who I would see. He was just as beautiful as ever. He was tall and golden, his eyes a fiery green, his wings as white as fresh snow. I felt very small standing in his presence.“Need of me how?” I asked, not completely comfortable around him.“You have training to do, my de
With that I closed the door and immediately took out my shower things and stripped before stepping into the water. It felt so nice to finally be able to scrub my skin with actual body wash and not small sterile smelling soap. I nearly moaned in pleasure as I worked the shampoo into my hair, sighing as I felt the choppy and broken strands of my burnt hair. Would definitely need to make a hair appointment. I did however, let out a little happy sound as I noticed the razor in my bag and immediately shaved the important bits.It felt heavenly to finally be groomed. After a good solid 15 minutes in the shower I got out and dried off with the ridiculously small hospital towels and got dressed, sighing as I finally felt a sense of comfort to be in my clothes. I stood in front of the sink, toothbrush with toothpaste on it in my hand and let out a sigh as I put it in my mouth and started brushing my tee
Stepping into the house I let out a sigh of relief and slowly made my way into the kitchen. It was most definitely slow going as the house was huge. Was it always this huge?! God who needs this much space? By the time I made it into the kitchen I shakely made my way to the breakfast nook and sank onto the bench with a huff.I reached down and massaged my sore leg muscles through my jeans, huffing in frustration byt how crippled and useless I felt. Couldn’t even make it across the floor without needing a break because I was cramping and winded. I felt ninety all of a sudden and growled in annoyance at the unwelcome feeling. I forced myself to stand with a grunt and hobbled to the fridge, opening it a crack and when I wasn’t met with a wave of stench I opened it fully and was very happy to see that it was clean and all things gross and expired had been disposed of. In fact now that I thought abou
Ezra ascended the stairs in silence and with ease, before I knew it he was on the fourth floor and paused, waiting for me to point him in the right direction. I motioned to the right, the last door in the hall. He made his way to it and opened it, holding me with one hand effortlessly. He made his way into the room, walking softly over the spacious hardwood floor and placed me gently on the small ottoman at the end of my bed, dropping my bag that I wasn’t even aware he had, at my feet before taking a step back and looking around my room. I looked with him, wondering what my room looked like and revealed about myself to a stranger. It was large, unnecessarily so like all the rooms in this house, and open, my bed directly in the middle between the doors to my walk-in closet on the right, and my bathroom and the left. The rest of the walls were mostly taken up by shelves of books, nicknacks, keepsake to
Hello Everyone I'm not sure if anyone even reads this story but unfortunately, I will be putting this one on hiatus until my The Moon and Sun Series is finished. I do intend to finish it as it's a story I very much want to share with people but it's not a priority right now. Sorry to anyone who reads it and sees this as I know how disappointing this can be as a reader. I just ask that you be patient with me and I assure you that as soon as I am able I will come back to this story and continue with it for everyone's enjoyment. Thank you for understanding Cheers
“Hello? Ah, James, Haven is sleeping right now. Can I take a message? Yes, she mentioned something about going to your place. No, it was a rough day at therapy, she needed to come home and just decompress after all of that. I don’t know if she’s still feeling up to it but I will ask her and get her to call you back.” I groaned as the sound of Ezra talking woke me up, sighing as I realized he was speaking to James. That would just further Jame’s preconceived notions about Ezra and I. I sat up from my position, lying wrapped in Ezra’s arms and looked at him as he handed me my phone that was still open to James’s call. I took it and placed it to my ear with a small sigh. “James, sorry I hadn’t intended on falling asleep.” “It’s fine, Haven. Are you ok? Ezra said that you had a rough appointment today.” His voice was
I sat in my car after therapy and sighed heavily. Today was a harder session. She could tell I was holding stuff back and I just didn’t feel like divulging much, my mind still a jumbled mess from this morning and all of last night's events. I felt like I wasn’t putting my all in and wasn’t getting what I wanted from it. She advised me that for the next session I tell her what was weighing on me today so she can properly help me. I closed my eyes and took a few deep breaths, my head back and the radio playing softly. I breathed evenly and just sat in silence for a while before sitting up and turning on the car, heading to my next appointment for my physio. This one was slightly more enjoyable. I didn’t ache as much and I could do the exercises quickly compared to when I first started. My physiotherapist was convinced today would be my last session. I guess turning into something different had its perks. St
“Stop Ezra. Why are you acting like this all of a sudden? You haven't done anything like this in all the time I’ve known you.” I watched him, a small frown on his face as his grey eyes darkened like a storm. “I’ve seen the way James looks at you and how you look at him. You have no future with him. He’s the type that wants the whole package, marriage, kids, family home, all of it. You can’t give him any of that. You are ageless Haven, you will never change, you can not have children. You have no chance at a future with James. That is what I’m trying to point out to you.” His voice was steady, with no emotion or inflection, just deadpan honest monotone words. I frowned and pushed against his chest, pushing him away from me and stepping out into the kitchen, putting the counter between us as I turned to face him. I was angry, annoyed, irritated and damn near ev
I stretched and yawned, turning in my bed and rolling over to see Ezra asleep beside me. His face was relaxed and soft in his sleep, his chest fell and rose with his even breathing and I may have felt a little creepy watching him sleep but it’s not like I had the opportunity to be this close to him and observe him in private. He was very handsome, with a strong jaw, full lips, high cheekbones, and his black hair was a little longer than when I first saw him. He was broad-shouldered and muscular, his hand rough and calloused, his chest and abdomen well-muscled and had a defined v. I felt like a creep but I couldn’t deny I liked what I saw. “It’s rude to stare you know.” His voice was soft with a hint of laughter as my eyes shot up to his to see his grey eyes bright and full of mirth. I flushed and shook my head at him. “My bed, my rules.” I teased back with a
The fire was roaring in my ears, the flames higher than my head and around me in a complete circle, the shadows behind the fire obscured and barely visible between the flickering or the flames, the loud inhuman shrieks overridden by the waves. I turned in a circle, my heart pounding, and my breathing ragged. I lifted my hands over my mouth to combat the choking smoke that felt like its thick ashy tendrils were crawling down my throat. I coughed and blinked away the tears as my eyes watered, grunting and cowering away from the flames and the wisps of it reached for me, burning my clothes and singing my skin. I screamed in fear seeing the flames lower slightly and the dark monstrous creatures beyond, arched and deformed with sharp teeth and claws, the stuff of nightmares and fear. I screamed and thrashed as one of them grabbed me from behind, it’s claws digging into my shoulders and tearing skin as it shook me and opened it’s jaws to rip out my throat.
I followed silently behind Ezra as he went to the back door, pulled out a lock picking kit and within seconds picked the lock. I crept in behind him silently as he opened the door and went to the alarm pad, disabling it with ease, closing the door behind us as we stood in the kitchen to let our eyes adjust. “We’ll have to perform the ritual in his room, and we have to be quick about it. The longer it takes the higher the risk is of the morphling trying to jump from its current host and finding a new one.” Ezra explained as we slowly tiptoed through the bungalow-style home. “We’ll have to put a ring of salt around his bed, use holy oil and holy water along with prayer and recite it as we bind the morphling.” “Whoa, prayer? Ezra, I don’t know any of that.” I hiss as a sliver of doubt and fear of this backfiring washed through me. Ezra reached into his pocket an
“Dinner is ready. Shall we eat poolside or did you want to eat in the kitchen?” Ezra asked as he made his way into the room, his voice echoing slightly off the tiles. I turned to him and smiled as I climbed out of the pool and wrapped a towel around me. “I’d rather eat in the kitchen. I’m gonna make tea, did either of you want?” I asked both men as I dried off quickly before wrapping my hair in a tighter and higher bun and pulling on a floor-length fleece housecoat. Super warm and cozy. “I’ll take a cup. I’m going to dry off and change. I’ll meet you guys in the kitchen.” James said with a smile before taking Thatcher and letting him outside so he could run around and dry off. I followed Ezra into the kitchen and immediately put the kettle on to boil hummin as I did so. “It smells amazing, Ezra. Did you make roll
We sat like that, me in his lap, his arms around me for a long time. It was getting late into the afternoon by the time he pulled away and all that time I ran my hand down his back and threw his hair to soothe and comfort him. Not a single word was spoken by either of us and Thatcher was sound asleep on the cushion with his hoard of toys around him. When James finally sighed and pulled his face out of my neck I looked at him and cupped his stubble-covered cheeks and wiped away a few tears with my thumbs. His blue eyes weren’t as bright and looked much more stressed and tired than I had ever seen them. “You alright?” I asked softly, wincing at the stupid question. He gave me a soft smile and nodded, running his hand through his hair and sighing heavily. “I’m…I’m alright. It just hit me harder this time than it ever has before.” He explained with a
