"Ughh!" Lila groaned with her head to the table. She had been coming to work the past few days, but nothing about it had been what she thought. "Why did I agree to come here?" she asked herself and shook her head. She raised her head and looked around. Why did she have this glamorous life, and yet she was so thrilled about it?

She could see she was sad; it felt like she was not really doing what she wanted. The return of her son banked on this because he was supposed to return back to her if she did as Oliver said, and he had a pretty long list. She was stupidly supposed to understand everything about Ai, even though every time she sat in a meeting with them, all the things they said sounded foreign to her.

The intercom on her table blinked a red light. She pressed the button and listened in. "Ms Carson?" The intercom buzzed to life. The young woman who seemed spirited and ready to work must be sad that she got stuck with a boss like her.

"Yes?" she murmured, looking up at the ceili

"The simple and only reason is that I am your boss." "I heard from everyone that you are a terrible boss in that regard." "A terrible boss?" she scoffed. "You are quite bold." "And you are a woman." "And what does that have to do with anything?" "It has a lot to do with everything; if women learn that they are not supposed to try and compete with men, then the world would be a much better place for us all." Lila reeled with shock; she could only believe that the same man who had been so gentle and kind was the same one who was saying all these things and even worse to her face. She could not understand what was happening because, at the beginning of the conversation, she could have sworn that he wanted to ask her out, but now it seemed like he was dying to insult her. "What are you saying?" 'I just want to know the reason you think you are worthy enough to sit here in this office." "The reason?" she asked. She stood up from the sofa and went back to her chair behind the table

"So how did it go?" "I did what you asked. Are you saying that I can come back to the head office if this goes well?" Zach asked over the phone. "If all goes well, of course you can," Oliver said over the phone. "But Mr. Carson..." Zach wanted to give him a full update. "No buts," Oliver said, and the line dropped dead. Zach held his phone tightly in his hand as he thought of what to do. His mind was spinning, and he felt like going back in to tell Lila that he had only said all of those things because her brother had heard she was not doing her job. He was not sure if what he was doing was the right thing to do. His mind flashed back to the day before yesterday; he had just returned from his trip and got a call from the chairman's office. He thought it was about the transfer requests he had put in. He had been trying for months to transfer back to the headquarters after the wrongful deployment of a mess his boss had caused, but all the pleas fell on deaf ears. He felt especially

"I have to get him fired," Lila said, sitting behind her brother, who was making dinner for the first time since she arrived at the house. He had gotten home earlier than usual and then made his way to the kitchen. She paused, put her hand on her chin, and leaned forward on the counter that separated them. She wondered how much Arietta would love to see the sight in front of hers, even though she thought it was disturbing. She took her phone from her bag sitting beside her and took a picture, sending it to Arietta. She called, but Lila declined it and sent a text immediately. Why are you calling me? Is there something important you'd like to say? She knew very well the reason she was calling her. She wanted to get a feel for the situation. He is cooking? I have never seen him cook before. What is the occasion? That I can't seem to figure out. I keep telling him how Zach treated me at work today, and he has not turned to me in a full minute. I am coming over. You are coming over?

"Hi," Arietta stood by the door of the kitchen. She held her bag close to her knees with both hands clutching it. Oliver's ears perked, and he felt excited to see her. He wondered why he was refusing to let himself love and live life; it felt like he had a lot to do on his plate to be thinking of going on dates and marrying. He knew that marrying someone he did not love would relieve him of the responsibility of romance, and his only responsibility to her would be family responsibilities. As long as they have children, then everything will be fine. He bit his lips and forced himself not to turn back. "Hi," Lila said, waving with so much vigour. She motioned for her to come closer and sit beside her. Lila still did not know what her brother was cooking, and even though she asked a few times, all she got was a dead answer. Something he would say something as annoying as "a meal.""Woah, it smells delicious in here," Arietta muttered as she put her bag on the island and sat beside Lila

Oliver stepped into his room and sat on the bed. He had craved a one-pot meal, the kind he cooked while he cooked the meat all by himself and had rushed home to cook it. If he were a normal boy, then his evening would have ended with him getting complaints from girls about how good it tasted, but now even he did not know what magic he had created. After Arietta had stormed out, Lila had given him a disappointed look because she had not left and stayed to listen in on the conversation between them. He could not shake off how sad Arietta looked when she told him that their relationship was ending and that it was time for her to let go. "I hope we can avoid each other as much as we can to stop any awkwardness between us," she said before leaving. He could not believe her final words to him were those cruel things. He replayed the scene in his head, and even though his heart ached as if someone had thrust a spear through it, he was convincing himself that everything that had happened ha

Rain stretched in bed, she took her phone with sleep still in her eyes as she swiped up on her phone, she saw a ton of messages and wondered who could be sending her that much messages so early in the day. She muttered incoherent words to herself and scratched the side of her neck when a call came through the screen. She stared at the boldly written name on screen staring back at her. LILA CARSON. Since she resumed as the assistant to this woman she never understood what all other assistants faced because Lila was the most easy going woman, all she had to do was bring a cup of coffee book her lunch and dinner if she was going to have some and then drop her off after the day. Rain had not heard the reason Lila was calling but she felt a strange chill all over her body, it felt like everything was going to change once she picked up the call. She stared at the screen as the phone vibrated in her hand. She applied as a researcher to the Carson group but even for entry level jobs in th

Lila rushed down the stairs to the kitchen, she picked up two spots from the drawer and put it into the freezer part of the refrigerator. She got the coffee machine running as she stood by the side. She did not want to sit before she fell asleep, she had stayed awake all night reviewing some of the documents. At first everything looked like it had been written in a foreign language but after a while some of the terms began to make sense with a little help from the Internet. No matter how she studied the work she could not seem to get a hang of it. So when she felt like it was an okay time to speak over the phone with her assistant she called her up and asked her for help, they both had goals if they could scratch each other's back they would have their end results soon. She closed her eyes, the end part of her back resting on the edge of the counter as her mind replayed the entire events of yesterday. She had been shocked in more ways than one but since she was trying to grow

Oliver told his assistant to call Gavin to come to his office for a meeting. Gavin did not know what to feel when he got the message, he did not know what it could be that Oliver wanted to say that he asked to meet with him. Gavin wanted to defy the message and act as if he had not gotten it but Evangeline had said that he should go and hear what he had to say. Evangeline had told him to keep his head up high and act as if he had not done anything wrong after all, he had not said anything wrong. Lila was truly an ex-convict and it was unbelievable that someone like her would be a Carson. "Mr Carson would see you now" Oliver had been the one who asked to see him and yet when he arrived at the time for the meeting he discovered that he would have to wait to be called in. Gavin looked up rubbing his hands in his trouser, he was glad he had not worn any delicate colours that could stain. He stood up with a big breath out of his mouth and followed the assistant who had come to cal

By the time Rosa had made sure they had enough cookies that their tooth hurt, Kevin retired to his room and then they went to the grave site. Kevin had stayed down not because he wanted to but because Rosa was suddenly herself and was now bossing him around as she used to do before. "It is going to be a long ride to the grave. Are you sure you do not want me to get anything for you?" "Anything to eat?" Lila asked, shocked. She had never been filled with cookies before; they say that there is a first time for everything and this was truly a first for her. "Yes, maybe some bread or just anything," Rosa replied and Lila shook her head. "Don't be shy and tell me; even if we don't have it at home, I will stop over at the store and get it for you." Rosa's offer sounded sweet but Lila was sure that she did not need to eat anything again. "I am fine," Lila said and then they left for the car. Lila helped Rosa into the car before turning around and getting in by herself. "We can go now," s

Lila stopped over at a flower shop and got two bouquets of flowers on her way to Rosa's place. She stood by the door her sweaty palms making it difficult for her to ring the bell. She pressed her hand against her clothes and raised her hand again. As if she was being watched she looked around to make sure that there were no eyes on her. As she raised her hand the door flung open and Rosa stood in front of her with a big smile across her face. "Hi, I was just about to ring the bell" she said taking a deep breath. "I know" Rosa said pushing the door wider and then stepped out. She pointed to the camera that Lila seemed to have missed and then she raised her phone and waved it to her. "I have been watching you for a while now" she added. "I am sorry, I am a bit nervous" Lila said licking her lips. She had licked it so much that all of the lip gloss she had put to prevent her lips from drying out was gone by now. "I can understand. My husband is a bit intimidating but once you get to

"Where do you think you are going?" Tessa asked as Lila descended from the stairs. Lila had expected a scolding from her mom because she allowed the plan fall through but insisted she just gave her a look and went into her room. This was the first time she was seeing her since she got inside last night. "To see Amber" "But Amber is dead" Tessa words came out without any form of remorse. "She is" Lila breathed out. "She is dead but I am going to her grave to say hello and apologize for making her leave this world earlier than she was supposed to. "Why do you have to be the one to apologize for that?" Aletta asked walking into the room and standing by the door frame. "If I feel guilty then don't you think that I need to apologize?" "So you are apologizing to clear your guilt?" Oliver asked coming out of nowhere and placing his arm around Aletta's shoulders. It felt as if they had ganged up against her. She gulped down the lump in her throat and shook her head. "I have to say you are pretty good with kids," Rosa said as they approached them. Damien and Jason had played so much that Lila was afraid that the boy was now attached to him in just a few hours. It kind of made her feel bad that the thing that took her weeks to do just took him less than an hour to achieve. "You doubted me," he said, and he felt the need to impress. "I used to volunteer at an orphanage every weekend until I got too busy," he said with a proud tone. Both ladies did not miss that he was trying to humble brag but it was obvious that he was terrible at it. "You should go back to volunteering there; I am sure that you were making such a great impact; it would be a shame if they had to let you go," Rosa said. "I should?""Of course you should; I think you are better as a volunteer there than as the chairman of your company." "Oh, come on, Rosa, I thought you were trying to comply with me but it sounds so much like an insult." "Is it?" Rosa asked, turning her face a b

"How did you find me here?" Lila asked. Did he put a tracker on her? How was it possible for him to find her here? "Did you put a tracker on me?" she voiced out her thoughts as they filled her head. She wondered if she did not have a filter to take out those things before they got out of her mouth."No, I did not put a tracker on you because that would be illegal.""Yeah," she nodded but somehow was not convinced by his legal or illegal speech thing. "So..." she trailed off as she demanded an answer."I asked your mom and she sent me your location." Lila blinked. Her mom sent Rosa and Damien here? Why would she do that?"My mom?""I told her that I wanted to speak to you and she allowed me to come here," Rosa said, taking a step forward so she was closer to her. "Can we talk for a few minutes?" Rosa was sure that speaking to her would bring closure for both of them. Lila did not need to feel guilty when she had done nothing wrong and Rosa wanted to let go of all the resentment she car

"Hello Mom" "Have you been able to get rid of him?" "Yes, I have but I don't think this is a good idea now." "What are you saying? Are you having second thoughts? Don't worry; it is normal to have second thoughts about things like this. But I promise you that once this passes, you will be glad you did this." "I don't know Mom; kidnapping him just seems a bit too cruel. I mean, he is my son and what if he remembers this moment for the rest of his life and he does not want to talk to me about it? What if it ends up as pent-up emotions on the insides of him?" she asked. "I want to do this the right way, the way that would not hurt anybody," she added in a murmur.Tessa took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Lila was making sense but still, how could she stop when she had already come this far? If she could just take a step further, this would be over before they knew it. By the fourth time of meeting her son, Jason has began to bond with her better than the first time. "He really likes you" Gavin commented. "Of course he does. I am his mother" Lila replied. She could not believe this guy was not still comfortable with leaving her alone with the boy. They had planned to have the boy kidnapped today but he was not going away. She knew that if he stayed with her then the plan was going to fail and she could not have it fail. She would be in great trouble if it did fail in her hands. Since she could not get him to leave her alone with the boy, Tessa made Oliver to call him out. He was to act as if he wanted to take him out for drinks to accept him into the family and then that was when disaster would strike. Lila was not sure it would pan out the way they wanted since he had been careful with leaving Jason with her. Lila stood in front of Gavin's house and swallowed hard. She had been standing for a good moment; she wanted to run away. She could not bring herself to ring the doorbell. "I have come this far to back out now," she said, taking a step forward and ringing the bell. She heard shuffling from inside the house and then the door flew open in front of her. "Hi there," she said. He took her by surprise and hugged her tightly, her hand to her side. "I am so glad that you could make it," he said, leaving her, and she was glad he did because if he held on longer and she did not hug back, she would seem strange. They were supposed to be lovers but she had not thought of the fact that they might want to do intimate things. What was she supposed to tell him? It was not like she was one to say no to things like that; that was the way she ended up pregnant and he knew her. Could she say her values had changed and she was waiting for marriage now? She knew that she had to come up with something to

"I did not quite get that, ma'am," he said and she cleared her throat. "I was mumbling nonsense to myself so you don't have to worry," she said and he nodded and cleared his throat.
