Gavin looked at his face in the mirror of his car before turning it off. He felt pain surge through his body. Damien had only punched him once yet but felt like he had gotten beaten up. He walked into the house, hoping that Evangeline was already asleep and he did not need to go back and forth with her that day.

"Why are you just getting back?"

"Since when did you care what time I got back?" Gavin was startled by her voice because he had looked around when he got in and had not seen anything, but mostly because the entire place was dark.

She watched him look around like a criminal ready to steal something when he came in. She wanted to stand in front of him and rain down curses but held herself back.

Tessa had called her and sent images of Gavin with Lila. She told her that she was against it, but her daughter was going back to Gavin. If Tessa had not told her to calm down, then maybe she would have gotten all riled up and thrown him out of the house.

Tessa promised to get back at Gavi

Lila wanted to check on Damien to see if he was hurt in the fight, even if it was most unlikely that anything like that would happen. She was still worried, but how would he believe anything if she was calling him up to check on him after brutally breaking up with him and even going the extra mile to try and convince him that she was done? "I never even got to tell him that I liked him," she murmured to herself. She did not know why it was so important to her, but she wanted to tell him at least once that during their time together she had begun to fall for him before she had to do what was right for herself and her family. THE NEXT MORNING"Damien is asking to meet with me," Tessa said as if she were giving morning updates to the group on the table"Why?" Lila choked out, trying not to sound too excited or curious to hear it. She had to first convince herself that she was capable of getting the job done before she could convince anyone else. "I don't know; I guess we have to meet

Tessa smiled at her daughter's report, and then she put the phone down on the table. She raised her head to meet Damien's gaze. "What do I owe the pleasure of meeting with Damien Calloway?" Tessa asked, leaning in and using her to trace the edge of the table. "Would you like anything to eat or drink?" Damien said instead of answering her. "It's already past ten; I had breakfast," she replied and then added in a low tone. "I am not an animal after all." "I am yet to have breakfast. I guess I must be an animal, but I need breakfast, so I will get you a cup of water and a few pastries for the table," he said, standing up and going to the counter to order. Tessa wondered why he had so much confidence. She knew him and his father when they suddenly rose to fame and how he changed the history of everything around him. He had been so influential that his past suddenly did not matter to everyone around him. Those who would have nitpicked at everything were comfortable with it all. Damien

"He is the real murderer; Lila was just in the car that day." Those words rang in Damien's head for a while, and it made sense for it to be that way. Gavin was one who could act that way. He could not believe how much he hated Lila to the extent that he failed to see how much she was hurting. She was not the real culprit, yet she did not even complain for once about all the guilt she was made to carry. She was not the real culprit, yet she was ready to come before him and apologize. He wondered how much pain she must have been in. "You pity her now, don't you?" Tessa asked."How can I not? How did this happen?" "My daughter is kindhearted, but the truth is that she is a bit of a fool," Tessa said, nodding her head. That was just the truth. Lila believed she was doing the right thing when the truth was that all she did was wrong from start to finish. "In the first place, I wonder how she acted that Gvain was able to convince her to go to jail for him." "So what are you planning to d

"Damien?" Rosa said as she saw him walk towards her in the garden. "I did not know you were coming over today," she added, and he smiled sadly, sitting beside her in the chair. "I also did not know that I was going to come over; it was kind of an impromptu thing," he confessed. "What is it with that expression on your face?" she asked. "What expression?""You look sad, but it is a different kind from the one I am used to," she said. He always looked sad, carrying around a gloomy face since Amber died. She always thought that it might be a good idea if he found someone who knew and loved him, but somewhere deep inside her, she wanted her daughter to be remembered a bit more. She was afraid that if she told him to do that, he might take it so seriously that her daughter would be a forgotten memory faster than one could think. That was the reason she never suggested it to him. She feared that the expression on his face was him coming to tell her that he had found someone and was goin

"What game are you trying to play with me?" Evangeline said over the phone. She had been giving Tessa updates about herself and Gavin, but at the moment it felt as if she was not getting anything out of the situation. "Game?" Tessa replied. She sounded confident, and that was one of the things that annoyed Evangelien even more. "Yes, what sick game is this? Are you cheering your daughter on? Did she come crying to you that she wanted him even after she had acted all high and mighty? Are you trying to take me out of his life without anything in my name? Just so you know, Gavin will barely have anything by the time we divorce." "Oh, please," Tessa said, letting out a laugh. "You are laughing? Is anything I have said funny?" Evangeline asked. Tessa could tell that she was over the edge, just where she wanted her to be. As she was now, she was most likely to do what she was going to ask her to do. She was afraid that she would lose everything and in a bid to hold on to anything she c

  • Lies Behind Bars: The Hidden Life   DIVORCED

Evangeline storms out of the room and walks to the study where Gavin had been coupled up all morning. She wanted to be the one to divorce him, but now that she thought about it, why didn't she let him take the blame for trying to divorce her first? She was going to try her best to start an argument one way or another. She barged into the room without knocking and let the door hit the wall behind it. "What do you think you are doing?" Gavin's voice came out all surprised as his eyebrow raised, almost touching his hairline in frustration. "Coming in here to talk to you," she said, leaving the door open as she walked towards him, striding like a leopard. "So why can't you close the door?" "Oh, I think we would both appreciate it if the door were left open," she added in a low tone as if she were trying to scare him. "What is this about?" he said again, wondering what she was trying to do. "Are you seriously asking me what this is about?" She asked, stopping midway and shaking her h

Gavin took up his phone and called Lila immediately; he could not wait to share the good news with her. Lila looked down at her phone and waved it to her mother. Her mother had come into her room to update her about the situation. Lial had never seen her mother in her room so much that this was weird for the both of them. "See," Tessa said with a smug smile on her face. She had told her daughter that Gvain was going to reach out that night to tell her about the divorce because she was certain that she had been able to push Evangeline out of his life. "What do I need to tell him?" Lila had always known better than to argue with her mom, but something inside of her wanted to get all the opportunity to have a conversation with her mom, so she tried to act as if she did not believe that Evangelien was going to go through with it. Somewhere inside of her, she wanted to believe that she loved Gavin, but seeing how she crumbled in front of a lump change, then she must really have been aft

"I am so glad we can do this," Oliver said as they sat down on the top floor in one of the finest dining rooms in the city. He had booked the entire place out so they were the only ones in there. "I am too; it seems as if things have been hectic but I have no idea what is going on," Arietta replied. She had tried her best to reach out to Lila but nothing seemed to be going through. She saw a lot of things but nothing was making sense. "It sure has," she expected Oliver to at least say a little bit more but he was quiet. "So what is the sudden dinner for? I thought we were going to meet tomorrow night," she said, knowing that tomorrow was Friday and they usually met on Friday for a full twenty-four-hour date to catch up on all they could not go on during the week. "We can still meet tomorrow," he said, and she wondered what his problem was and why he was not saying anything more to her."Do you want to explain why we are here in this empty, dimly lit restaurant?" "Do you really have to go?" Damien hated that Lila was whining over the phone. "Am I whining again? Why am I acting like this?" she muttered to herself and before he could say anything, she was speaking again. "When are you going to be back?" she asked."In two days and once I am back, I am going to run to you.""Okay then, you want me to go in the evening to check on Daisy?" she asked. Daisy was a dog that he had adopted and she hoped that soon she would join them at the house. Although staff were allowed in the house now, she wanted to still go over to his place; if she could not see him, then at least she could see the dog."Yes, can you do that?" he asked."Of course I can," she said and he took a deep breath."I gotta go down. I will call you as soon as we get there but it might take a while," he said and she nodded. She had to be understanding; as much as she wanted to cling to him, he had to have a life or else she would be known as the woman who sucked the life out of her boyf

  • Lies Behind Bars: The Hidden Life   ELEVATED LOVE

Lila stood in front of Damien's office; surprisingly, since Gavin was put behind bars and they had publicly declared their relationship, he felt free and began to go to work. Lila wondered what he had done to her; she wasn't the kind of person who would randomly show up at his office on a Monday morning but he had been out of town all weekend, meaning they didn't get to spend time together and since he was so busy with a product launch, he came to the office straight from the airport. She was supposed to be at work but should go to work after seeing him.She cleared her throat and walked into the office. The lobby was littered with people going in and out and some small groups of people talking. She tried to look at them; ignorance is bliss; if she did not check them, she wouldn't know if they were looking at her or even talking about her. She stood by the elevator with some other people and got in as soon as it stopped. She was going to the last floor so she made herself comfortable

  • Lies Behind Bars: The Hidden Life   DEPARTURE

"Do you really have to go?" Lila was standing at the airport as they were seeing her mom off; she could not understand the reason her mom was in such a hurry to leave them. She stayed until the end of the wedding ceremony and then began to talk about leaving to continue her world tour.Lila and Tessa were just getting close but Tessa knew it would be short-lived; if she stayed a bit longer, then both of them would be at each other's throats in no time."Yes, if I don't go, then we will fight Tessa replied with a blank expression on her face."Spo why don't we make conscious efforts to make sure we don't fight?" To Lila, the question made sense because if they were to make an effort, then maybe they could stay together."I would like to try but I...""You don't want to try, you just want to make excuses" Lila understood and she was sure not to try and bring me up again. Her mother was not willing to try; she had better things to do and that was okay. Even if she would miss her, she at

FIVE MONTHS LATER"I know I was happy that you were joining my family but I still can't believe you are marrying my brother," Lila murmured as they waited to be called in."I would have you know...""You love my brother." Lila cut Arietta off before she could complete the sentence. "I know you do; I understand that you do but I still cannot...""If you can't understand it, then I suggest that you let it be." Arietta knew it was playful banter but she was getting nervous; she wondered what was going on in the hall and why it was taking so long for her to get called in. She wanted to tell Lila to go check what was going on but she knew if she showed fear, Lila, who was far more nervous than her, would freak out.She opened her mouth to continue the banter when someone came to tell her that her father would be there any moment to walk her in. Matteo came in almost immediately and it had Arietta wondering why they had to send someone when he was right behind her."Oh my goodness!" he excl

  • Lies Behind Bars: The Hidden Life   RESOLVE

Lila waited for her mom to be out of the room before she said a word. She could not believe that she had just stood up to her mom and it had worked. It made her begin to think of all the times she could have done the same and maybe it would have worked too. She was still trying to process what had happened when she felt her feet leave the ground and dangle in the air. Alarmed, she looked down to see Damien holding her up. She looked down at him with wide eyes."What are you doing?" she asked with shock all over her face."I have missed you so much. I can't believe we began dating and we had to stay away for so long," he said, not answering her question. She felt butterflies swell in her stomach. It felt good hearing a man say words like that. It was never that way with Gavin for her, at least the side of him he decided to show her."I missed you too," she replied. She could not help but say, looking down at his face after hearing such words was enough to make her blurt them out withou

  • Lies Behind Bars: The Hidden Life   LIFE

Damien spent the next few days shuffling between his office and the police station; somehow getting Gavin behind bars made him feel like a huge burden had been lifted off his shoulders. He could finally stand face to face with Kevin and Rosa without feeling bad. He and Lila had been communicating via text messages only and the words sounded as formal as they could be. She had told him that she was going to wait but first Gavin had to be securely behind bars because she feared what he might do.Even though Damien swore to protect her, he could still understand her paranoia. Every time he went to see Gavin with a lawyer, he was screaming in his voice and breaking out in a sweat, demanding Lila. Of course, Tessa was never going to allow Lila to show up there; it was still scary to see how much Gavin was not willing to give up even though he saw that there was no hope for him again.Gavin was glad that at last, it was the final hearing; he wondered why the court was dragging out the trial

  • Lies Behind Bars: The Hidden Life   RIGHT

Damien sat across from Oliver, wondering what he wanted to say; it was not like he was completely oblivious to whatever he was going to say; it was just that he had expected that all of this would blow over and Gvain would be safely behind bars before they talked about anything."You deceived me," Oliver said at once; there was no time for him to be beating around the bush. Damien had not thought too much about it before he decided to deceive him."I did," Damien replied with a head nod. It was not a false accusation after all and he thought that the faster he admitted to doing it, the faster they got to stop talking about it. "I wanted revenge and since I did not have the facts, I ran with what I had.""So all the while I was helping you get revenge against my sister and even after spending time with her, you did not realise that you were wrong about her?" Oliver asked. Lila was the kind of girl you would not believe would ever hurt a fly, even as her brother he had to say that nothi

  • Lies Behind Bars: The Hidden Life   TALK

Lila stood behind a glass watching Gavin get questioned; she wanted to run in there and scream in his face now that she was sure there was no way he would escape from there. She watched him get flustered even though he tried to act cocky. They were yet to bring up Amber and the evidence they had gotten. She knew he would lose his mind once he saw the evidence because that would point directly to her. She was the only one who had that evidence so he would know immediately that this was her doing but she did not care. There was no escaping for him for this one.She turned to Oliver, who was standing beside her. Tessa had said that she did not have a need to stand in the room and watch him get interrogated and the chief of police had taken her to his office so she could sit and get some coffee to drink. "I think I have seen enough; I want to go home," she announced, turning slowly to Oliver."I told you there was nothing to see here but you wanted to see," Oliver replied, his voice devoi

  • Lies Behind Bars: The Hidden Life   EVIDENCE

It took a while before the officers came to release all civilians from the room they kept them safe, the criminal was found and even transferred from their station to a more secure one. It was then that Lila knew that her mother and brother were standing outside the entire time. By the time they came in, Kevin was already speaking with the officers about how he would like to keep Gavin in there until there was evidence.Tessa did not pay any heed to Lila but walked straight to Kevin, who was arguing with the officer he was speaking to. "Mr. Voss," Tessa said as she approached him. Kevin turned around to see her and smiled with the base of his lips."Mrs. Carson, it has really been a while since I saw you," he said, turning to her."Can we talk a bit?" Tessa asked and he nodded. "Can we have some privacy, please?" she asked the officer who was still standing by them. The man looked flustered but his expression changed to gratitude because he was happy that he had found a way to escape.
