Laura
The antiseptic smell filled the space as I stood over by Christian. The rhythmic sound of the machines was a reminder that he was still with us, but the anxiety gnawed at my insides. Following the surgery, I felt a flicker of hope, yet hope was inextricably blended with fear as I waited anxiously for him to wake. “Please, Christian,” I whispered, gripping his hand tighter. “I need you to wake up. I can’t do this without you.” My heart went out to his pallid complexion, in spite of the bruises that still lit up his appearance. The doctors had reassured me he was stable, but the unanswered one of time, if at all, he might become conscious above me, an approaching thunderstorm. “Laura,” Adlan broke my concentration and I saw him standing by the doorway with a worried expression. “How is he?” “Stable, but not awakened,” I whispered. “I just… I don’t know how much longer I can wait.” Adlan stepped beside me, his presence a steady anchor. “You’re doing everything you can. Just being here means the world to him, even if he can’t respond right now.” I smiled, happy to hear his support, however the weight of the task felt heavy soon after. “What if he doesn’t wake up? What if he doesn’t know I’m here?” “He knows,” Adlan said firmly. “You’re his sister. You two share a bond that goes beyond words. Just keep talking to him.” I let out a deep breath, in an attempt to recover from my pounding heart. “You’re right. I just need to keep believing.” Adlan stayed by my side, offering quiet encouragement as I resumed my vigil at Christian’s bedside. I told him about our shared childhood memories, rehashing the times that we've experienced. I explained to him the ridiculous experiences in our life, hoping by all means that he would be able to listen to me. “I can still picture the day we constructed that treehouse in the backyard," I said, letting a little smile spread across my face. “You were so determined to make it the best treehouse ever. We spent ages scaling up and down, and at one stage, you even fell off of the tree!” I stopped, and let the hit of warm memory flood me. “You were so brave though. You just laughed it off and climbed back up. You’ve always been my hero, Christian. Please, come back to me.” Adlan shifted slightly, his hand resting on my shoulder as I continued to talk. “By the way, I wish that I could just rewind all the way back to the good old days, right there. We had so much fun together. I want you and I am begging you to return and rouse yourself.” As the hours passed, I found comfort in sharing my feelings, and Adlan remained quietly supportive beside me. I realized the strength of our bond got stronger. At last, after what seemed like ages, a nurse approached the room and made checks on Christian's vitals. “How’s he doing?” I asked, my heart racing. “He’s stable, and we’re keeping a close eye on him,” she replied, glancing at the monitors. “It may take some time for him to wake up, but the fact that he’s stable is a good sign.” “Thank you,” I mumbled, clinging to that sliver of optimism. Having finished the rounds and left, I sunk back down into my chair, exhausted. “You should get some rest, Laura,” Adlan suggested gently. “I can stay here with him while you take a break.” “I refuse to leave. I will stay with him," I finally whispered. “It won't be long before you'll be gone,” I promise," he comforted me. “Just a quick break to recharge. He’ll still be here when you get back.” I hesitated, torn between my desire to be by Christian’s side and the overwhelming fatigue that weighed on me. Finally, I nodded, realizing that Adlan was right. I needed to look after myself in order to be there for him. “Okay, for a little while anyway," I replied, getting to my feet and stretching my stiff muscles. As I left the room, I felt a pang of guilt for stepping away, but I reminded myself that I was doing it for Christian. I needed to be strong for him, and that required taking care of my own well-being. I went down the corridor, and my mind raced. I went to a little cafe and had a cup of coffee. Its strong aroma stimulated my senses. I sat down at a table and tried to organize my thoughts, but my mind would be drawn back and back again to Christian. I sighed to myself, as the burden of anxiety came to rest once more on my back. At that moment, my cell phone buzzed in my pocket and I yanked it out to catch a text from Christian’s friend, Jake. “Hey, Laura. Just checking in. How’s Christian doing?” I dashed off a quick response in which I updated him on the matter. “He’s stable but hasn’t woken up yet. I’m really worried.” Jake replied almost instantly. “I’m sorry to hear that. Just tell me if I can help. I’ll be there for you both.” I appreciated his support, but it only served as a reminder of how alone I felt in this moment. “Thanks, Jake. I’ll keep you posted.” After finishing my coffee, I decided to head back to Christian’s room, feeling a bit more energized. Walking down the hospital corridors as the fluorescent light flashed on harsh illumination, but I set my mind to be there for my brother. When I entered the room, I found Adlan still by Christian’s side, his expression calm and focused. “Hey, how was your break?” he asked, glancing up at me. “It was good. I needed it,” I replied, taking my seat again. “How’s he doing?” “He’s stable. I chatted with him while you were out,” Adlan says with a smile on his lips. “I told him what a brave brother he was and how much you love him. I felt my heart swell at the thought. “Thank you for being here,” I said sincerely. “It means so much to me.” Adlan nodded, his eyes filled with understanding. “We’re in this together, remember?” I gripped Christian's hand again as I sat down in the chair a second time, the warmth against my own skin. The minutes ticked by, and I felt the urge to succumb due to fatigue drawing closer. Just as I began to drift off, I heard a soft sound, a faint groan. “Christian?” I gasped, jolting upright. I looked at him, my heart racing. His eyelids trembled and I came closer, gasping up into my sternum. “Laura?” His voice was sickly, barely audible than a whisper, but it was the most beautiful sound to my ears. “I’m here! I’m right here!” I cried, my heart soaring with hope. “You’re going to be okay! You made it through the surgery!” He gradually opened his eyes and made eye contact around the room, ultimately fixating on me. “What happened?” he murmured, confusion clouding his expression. “You were in an accident,” I explained, tears streaming down my cheeks. “But you’re safe now. You’re in the hospital, and you’re going to be okay. Christian blinked, processing my words as he tried to sit up, but I gently pushed him down. “No, don’t try to move too much. You just woke up from surgery. You need to rest.” “Laura…” he whispered, his voice hoarse. “I’m sorry.” “Sorry? For what?” I asked, my heart aching for him. “Worrying you,” he replied. His eyes streamed with remorse. “I didn’t mean to scare you.” “You didn’t scare me,” I said, shaking my head. “I was terrified but the important thing is that you’re awake now. You’re back with me.” “I can’t believe it,” he murmured, his voice cracking. “I was so scared…” I gripped his hand tighter and my pulse quickened with delight. “We’re going to get through this together. I promise you that.” Adlan stepped away from the room, but I could still sense his presence hovering just in the background. I turned to see him, and he smiled a smile that glowed throughout the room. “Just aim to improve, Christian," I replied while looking back at my brother. “You have a lot of people who care about you, and we’re all here to help you.” As Christians' eyes closed again, I experienced a feeling of gratitude wash over me. “I love you, Christian," I said, my voice trembling. “You’re my everything.” “I love you too, Laura,” he replied softly before drifting back into a peaceful slumber. I realized the road ahead would be difficult, but for the first time in days, I experienced a glimmer of hope. Christian was awake, and that was all that mattered. Together, we would face whatever came next, and I would be there every step of the way.LauraAs I watched Christian's chest rise and fall with each gentle breath, a sense of relief washed over me. He was finally awake, and the road to recovery, although long, was now in sight. Adlan's reassuring presence beside me was a comforting reminder that I wasn't alone in this journey. With Christian stable and under the care of the hospital staff, Adlan suggested we take a break and celebrate this small victory. "Let's go get some dinner," he said, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "We can finally relax and unwind."I nodded, feeling a weight lift off my shoulders. "That sounds amazing. I could use a break from this hospital food."We made our way out of the hospital, the warm evening air enveloping us like a gentle hug.The hug was something I really wanted right now. I am finally relieved that my brother is back. And heading to treatment Adlan led me to his car, and we drove to a quaint little restaurant on the outskirts of town. The sign above the door read "Bistro Bliss,"
Adlan I could not help but get a sense of wistful nostalgia when I got up and left the place, with my phone in hand, and went into the cool night air. The call from the company was unavoidable, and a sorry thing that I could not help but take. Yet standing at the curb, with the shouting argument pulsating through my aural area. While listening to the unfolding crisis I felt transported back to the magical evening we had spent together. The dazzling back of Laura's laughing, the soft flow of her hair over her shoulders and out from her neck, the magic of her smile illuminating the room. I got a strong, unavoidable sensation to go back, to get her, to spend the evening together, to make it a nice night. I couldn't let this night go by, especially with all the new ground we were covering, on a more profound level. I saw the little present box in my hands, the one I had been ready to give her all along. In fact, it seemed like a perfect chance to put on a big production.Smiling, I went
AdlanI paced outside the room, worried out of my mind. A lady who had introduced herself as Stephie came out earlier. She tried talking to me, but I had no interest in holding a conversation with a woman who was not Laura. Call me obsessive. I wondered what they were talking about. Were they fighting? I wanted Laura to be happy, and if that had to come at the expense of losing touch with her brother then so be it.I took a step towards the room, hovering between respecting their privacy and being close to Laura, when I heard a muffled thud come from inside the room. I rushed in, shocked at what I saw there. Laura sprawled awkwardly on the floor, her eyes closed and face pale, with Christian trying unsuccessfully to climb down the bed with a bandaged leg trying to get to his sister his face looking panicked."Press the call button beside your bed!” I yelled at Christian. Gosh! Was he a moron? I rushed to Laura's side, mind racing and I checked her pulse when I ascertained it was s
LauraI gave Adlan a brief history of everything about my past, from my dad leaving us when Christian was just a baby to mom falling into depression and pining after him like a lovesick puppy even though she had two young children to take care of, her being diagnosed with cancer and later passing on when I was 15.I didn't tell him about paying my brother's debts, though. That would only make him fault him more and if our relationship was going to be a long-term thing, I wanted him and my brother to be on good terms.Adlan stared at me for a few seconds, digesting everything. He took a step closer to my bedside and bent down to hug me, his strong arms wrapping around me and providing comfort to me even though I never knew I needed it.“I'm sorry you had to go through all that. Laura The diner was quiet and dark and the only light in here was the dimming light from the kitchen gas...uhmm...intended exergeration. The diner had almost lost its frequent bubbly spirit that moved the enthusiasm to a whole higher level. I sighed before turning the gas off. "Hey, Peter. I bet I'll be clocking out now." I took my apron off and waited for Peter's response who had just walked into the pantry only a few seconds ago. "Peter," I called out but got no response. I walked to the pantry and as I pushed the door open, walking a little deeper, I instantly froze in my stance with my heartbeat frozen as well while I stared in horror at Peter and he stared back at me, except his stare held no life. "Peter!!!" I finally broke the internal cord that tied my voice. I rushed to him, kneeling on the pool of blood with my trembling hands moving slowly to his bloody face. I whimpered, slowly lowering my head to his bloody shirt to listen to his heartbeat and t
Laura The whistling sound of the kettle brought me back to my reality and I sighed. I turned the stove off and made a cup of coffee as I was going to need all the energy I could get today. The thought of going to work broke my heart into a million pieces. Aside from the fact that Peter wasn’t the best co-worker to work with, especially when you are having a hard time with life as it is, working three different jobs just to pay off some loan isn’t better either. On days when I wasn’t bullied to stay the shift with Peter, I’d be working my ass off as a doordash delivery lady or freelancing when I need to lay my head to rest. Life is tough. I sipped the coffee, almost forgetting it was scorching hot and ended up burning my tongue and throat. “Son of a…!” I groaned before dropping the cup and a stomping sound came from my ceiling followed by a voice. The apartment above me had been empty for God knows how long since the rent was enough to buy a villa on an Island wher
Adlan After ending the phone call with my brother, my temper rose again when my phone rang and I cursed under my breath. I angrily grabbed my phone, ready to unleash the rest of the words he had not heard but this time, it wasn't a call from my brother but an unknown number. I dropped the pen in my hand and stared at the screen for a few seconds before quickly swiping to pick up on the third ring. "Hello," I said but there was no response. I took the phone off my ear and looked at the screen again but the call was still connected. "Hello," I said again giving a second chance to the caller before I ended the call. "This is Laura George. I would like to meet up." I became alerted, checking the screen again to make sure I heard right. "Hello. Are you there?" her beautiful voice came again and I smiled. Finally! "Oh, yes. Yes, I am here. Uhmm...yes, we should meet up." "You have a place in mind or you'd want me to pick?" "Are you truly Laura George?"
Laura I was treading a path of ruin or wealth or good will come to those who wait. I have been waiting all my life and this might be the good coming to me. My skin was burning inside and my eyes were itching. My blood rushed through my veins and was pumped heavily by my heart. My tongue felt twisted and my head felt as though it was about to burst. All of these were my allergy reactions. I was allergic to seafood. I had to do it. I had to make him believe I was who he thought I was. After seeing him sit before me, looking like money itself. Stepping into a fancy restaurant with a fancy atmosphere made me realize there was more to life than working at the diner. He looked good. Exceptionally good. He looked even better than his words in that letter. The grey suit looked absolutely gorgeous on him. The way his hair was combed backwards. The way his teeth glistened under the bright lights. The colour of his eyes almost matching his blue tie. His height, almost compet

AdlanThe days that followed were a blur of emotions; anxiety, hope, despair, and determination. Laura was a relentless being, with an all-consuming love for her brother and aimed never to leave the hospital. I’m flattered by her strength and grittiness. However, I could tell that it was withering her on some deeper level. Every time I went to visit, I saw her sitting in a chair next to Christian's bed, eyes red from exhaustion and face pale. I just knew I should do something about it, even if it meant she should stop, but every time I suggested that she should discontinue, she shook her head and her eyes fixed and steadily fixed on her brother.Laura, you have to eat someone, I told her one day at lunchtime, presenting her with a casserole from the cafeteria.“I can’t,” she replied, her voice strained. “I just want to be here when he wakes up.I laid out the food on the side table next to her. “He wouldn’t want you to neglect yourself. He needs you to be healthy too.”She sighed,
LauraAsleep in the hospital room, the unimaginable carnage hung about me like a tightening fog. The maddening beeping of the heart monitor pulsed in my head, and with every beep a blast of fear spread through me. I could not look away from Christian, who lay there, frozen and exposed. The medical team swarmed around him, their faces a mask of concentration, and I felt utterly helpless.“Is he going to be okay?” I managed to choke out, my voice barely a whisper.A nurse looked toward me, a look both understandingly and insistently on her face. “We’re doing everything we can. Please, wait outside for a moment.”“No!” I cried, desperation clawing at my throat. “I can’t leave him. He needs me!”Adlan said very quietly, coming closer and stroking my shoulder. “Laura, please. Let them work. They know what they’re doing.”I fixed my gaze upon him, my pulse quickening. I saw a split second of worry in his expression. It quieted me down enough to draw a few shallow breaths. “Okay, I’ll wait.
AdlanIt was, inarguably, one of the most difficult to watch, having seen Laura plummet. I felt helpless as I stood outside the hospital room, listening to her plead with her brother to wake up. The severity of her condition made an impact on me, and I realized that whatever power I would have, I should utilize this to help her.“Hey," I said, creeping up beside her. Looking into her watery, searching eyes, her pain resonated in my very being. “You’re not alone, okay? I’m right here.”“I don’t know what I’d do without him,” she whispered, her voice cracking.I squeezed her hand, trying to offer comfort. “You won’t have to find out. We’re going to get through this together.”“I can’t lose him, Adlan. He's all that's left,” she cried, her eyes pleading.“You won’t lose him. He’s a fighter just like you. You've both been through too much to lose him, I comforted her, wishing I could take her pain away.We remained mute for a while, the sound of the hospital filling the air. Out of a desp
LauraThe world wriggled before my eyes as I crouched on the unforgiving grip of the road and gazed at the unmoving form slumped on the ground. All over my chest, the heart pummeled in unrelenting speed, to razor-thin beat like a battle cry, each beat a knell that this could not be.“No, no, no! I took a breath, rising and walking forward, breath held rapt in my chest. “Christian! Christian!”I shook my brother's shoulders lightly, desperately trying to find any sign of life yet his eyelids shut, skin ashen against the road. Panic surged within me, filling my veins with ice. “Please, God… Please!”As if by cue, the ringing of car alarms swept the streets, an audibility I never knew otherwise but in the hope. On the other hand, when I hit the top on his face I felt nothing, no sensation of warmth, no sensation of pulse. Just an emptiness that swallowed me whole.“Step back! Give him space! A voice echoed through the crowd and I became seized by grasping hands on my shoulders as they sw
