Laura
I gave Adlan a brief history of everything about my past, from my dad leaving us when Christian was just a baby to mom falling into depression and pining after him like a lovesick puppy even though she had two young children to take care of, her being diagnosed with cancer and later passing on when I was 15. I didn't tell him about paying my brother's debts, though. That would only make him fault him more and if our relationship was going to be a long-term thing, I wanted him and my brother to be on good terms. Adlan stared at me for a few seconds, digesting everything. He took a step closer to my bedside and bent down to hug me, his strong arms wrapping around me and providing comfort to me even though I never knew I needed it. “I'm sorry you had to go through all that. I can't imagine what it must have been like for you at such a young age," I was shocked nobody had ever felt sorry for me. At a young age, I had to step up where my mother couldn't. Way before she fell sick I had been the one cleaning after my brother, taking care of him and getting most of the house chores done. Nobody ever saw the little girl who just wanted her mom to smile and hug her once in a while. All they saw was a strong and hardworking daughter who loved her family. It was a surreal feeling. "Christian thinks he will find Dad and everything's going to be okay again, but he doesn't know what we had to go through to get through the separation.” What I meant was, What I had to go through. Adlan nodded slowly, his expression thoughtful like he could tell what I wanted to say but didn't. "Do you want to find your dad though? Despite everything? Because I will help if that's what you want." I thought about it. I had already lived more than half my life without my biological dad or any male figure to even stand in for him. I was tired of all the wondering, the pain of being abandoned, but if given the chance, would I want to know him? To see him? I shook my head, "Not really, maybe I could revisit this conversation later, but no. Besides it's not like I can stop Christian from looking for him." "Do you want me to talk to Christian for you?" He asked me, eyes boring into mine. "No, it's fine. He may not even find him, and all this worry would have been for nothing," I said, biting my lip, actual worry gnawing at my insides. He listened to me intently, eyes watching my every expression and movement, and despite the severity of the situation, it made me happy that he always made an effort to understand me, to look deeper than the surface smiles. The moment didn't last long, though, as Christian burst into the room in a wheelchair with Stephie right behind. I knew from the look Adlan threw me that we would be revisiting this conversation, but God! So much had happened in one night. "Laura! You're awake!" He noticed Adlan sitting on my bed immediately, scrunching up his face. He asked, "Who are you?" I answered, "Meet my boyfriend, Adlan." His jaw goes slack. "You complained about me being in a relationship without telling you, and you did the same thing?" I cocked my head, hmm... Now that I think about it, we really did the same thing. Guess we really are siblings. The room was quiet for a bit, three of us wary of what to say to each other and Stephie just standing there awkwardly, probably regretting dating my brother. Then I broke the silence. "Where's the doctor? Can I go home now?" I turned to Adlan, imploring him with my eyes. I hated hospitals. They reminded me of all the times I had to come to visit Mom in the hospital, smelling of death and antiseptic. "I'll get the doctor,” Stephie answered, her voice tiny and steps unsure as she stepped out of the room. Leaving the three of us to stew in uncomfortable silence. A few minutes later, after I had engaged in a lovely conversation with my brother about his girlfriend and Adlan managed not to scorch Christian from where he sat with his eyeballs, all three of us doing everything but addressing the elephant in the room, a different doctor finally came in and discharged me. Adlan I rolled Laura's wheelchair to the car, my mind was torn in different directions about Laura and her past, about my dad and brother, who I hadn't heard from in forever. I made a move to go round the car, but she placed a hand on my arm, stopping my movement. I turned to her, confused. She cocks an eyebrow at me, "Have you apologized to the kind doctor?" I scrubbed my hands down my face, for Fucks sake! She doesn't give a damn about my obvious mood change and just continues to stare at me hard. I sighed and started making my way back into the hospital. The things this woman made me do! I stopped a nurse to ask about the doctor and realised I didn't even know his name. Great! Just great! I described the man to about three different nurses before one pointed me in a direction. I got to his station, and when he looked up and saw me, he looked like he would pee himself there on the spot. "Hey, man! Just wanted to apologise for how I reacted earlier. My priority was and always is my girl, hope no hard feelings." I clapped him on his back so hard that he nearly toppled over with his clipboard. I walked away but not before seeing him open and close his mouth like a fish out of water, too shocked to even say a word. That's okay, Laura said to apologize, she never said anything about making friends with the guy.Adlan I returned to the car, Laura watching me with a proud expression in her eyes, it made me want to beat my chest like a caveman. "You okay?" She asked "You're not allowed to ask me that until you're better," I replied. I wanted her to focus on herself for a while without worrying about anybody, not her brother, father, not even me. For a night anyway, she can think about me later. I got into the driver's seat and ignited the engine. As I drove, I continuously glanced at Laura, trying to gauge her emotions and what she was feeling. She was pretty stoic most of the time and only allowed me to know what she was feeling through her eyes or bodily expression, which was very minimal. "You'll be okay. I promise," I said, jaw tightened. "You can't guarantee that though, not everything can bend to your power." I kept quiet because she was right, but for her, I was going to make even the stars bend. I dropped Laura at her apartment and wanted to stay with her, but I also knew she ne
Laura The diner was quiet and dark and the only light in here was the dimming light from the kitchen gas...uhmm...intended exergeration. The diner had almost lost its frequent bubbly spirit that moved the enthusiasm to a whole higher level. I sighed before turning the gas off. "Hey, Peter. I bet I'll be clocking out now." I took my apron off and waited for Peter's response who had just walked into the pantry only a few seconds ago. "Peter," I called out but got no response. I walked to the pantry and as I pushed the door open, walking a little deeper, I instantly froze in my stance with my heartbeat frozen as well while I stared in horror at Peter and he stared back at me, except his stare held no life. "Peter!!!" I finally broke the internal cord that tied my voice. I rushed to him, kneeling on the pool of blood with my trembling hands moving slowly to his bloody face. I whimpered, slowly lowering my head to his bloody shirt to listen to his heartbeat and t
Laura The whistling sound of the kettle brought me back to my reality and I sighed. I turned the stove off and made a cup of coffee as I was going to need all the energy I could get today. The thought of going to work broke my heart into a million pieces. Aside from the fact that Peter wasn’t the best co-worker to work with, especially when you are having a hard time with life as it is, working three different jobs just to pay off some loan isn’t better either. On days when I wasn’t bullied to stay the shift with Peter, I’d be working my ass off as a doordash delivery lady or freelancing when I need to lay my head to rest. Life is tough. I sipped the coffee, almost forgetting it was scorching hot and ended up burning my tongue and throat. “Son of a…!” I groaned before dropping the cup and a stomping sound came from my ceiling followed by a voice. The apartment above me had been empty for God knows how long since the rent was enough to buy a villa on an Island wher
Adlan After ending the phone call with my brother, my temper rose again when my phone rang and I cursed under my breath. I angrily grabbed my phone, ready to unleash the rest of the words he had not heard but this time, it wasn't a call from my brother but an unknown number. I dropped the pen in my hand and stared at the screen for a few seconds before quickly swiping to pick up on the third ring. "Hello," I said but there was no response. I took the phone off my ear and looked at the screen again but the call was still connected. "Hello," I said again giving a second chance to the caller before I ended the call. "This is Laura George. I would like to meet up." I became alerted, checking the screen again to make sure I heard right. "Hello. Are you there?" her beautiful voice came again and I smiled. Finally! "Oh, yes. Yes, I am here. Uhmm...yes, we should meet up." "You have a place in mind or you'd want me to pick?" "Are you truly Laura George?"
Laura I was treading a path of ruin or wealth or good will come to those who wait. I have been waiting all my life and this might be the good coming to me. My skin was burning inside and my eyes were itching. My blood rushed through my veins and was pumped heavily by my heart. My tongue felt twisted and my head felt as though it was about to burst. All of these were my allergy reactions. I was allergic to seafood. I had to do it. I had to make him believe I was who he thought I was. After seeing him sit before me, looking like money itself. Stepping into a fancy restaurant with a fancy atmosphere made me realize there was more to life than working at the diner. He looked good. Exceptionally good. He looked even better than his words in that letter. The grey suit looked absolutely gorgeous on him. The way his hair was combed backwards. The way his teeth glistened under the bright lights. The colour of his eyes almost matching his blue tie. His height, almost compet
Laura "Hey, Laura," Kate greeted as she walked in and I answered with a nod. "You look different. I would say you look bright," Andrew said with a scoff and my cheeks flushed. I knew conversations with them meant no good and for the first time, I wished Peter was around. "I..." I let out an awkward smile before I continued. "I look the same." I took off the gloves in my hands and dumped them in the trash can. Kate had moved closer to me and as I turned back around, I almost bumped into her. She intensely stares at me with her breath fanning my face but I couldn't move away from her. I held my breath while she stared. She trailed her finger across my face and rubbed my cheeks. "Why are your cheeks flushed?" she finally spoke. "That's just..." I coughed, almost choking on my spit. "That's just how my cheeks are." "Come on, Kate. Let the poor girl be. Her shift is almost over. She needs to go hang out with the deadbeat Peter." he laughed and Kate looked back a
Adlan “Marry me. Marry me, Laura George.” I said the words. I hadn't planned to but staring into her bright eyes gave me the certainty I wanted. I had no idea if that was a great thing to do or if I was going crazy but I said it still. She stared into my eyes and creased her eyebrow as though she had heard me wrong. “What?” “I know it seems too early. I know we haven’t gotten to any point in love to think of marriage. Fuck! We haven’t even started dating and it's insane to propose marriage now but what’s more insane is how I feel about you. I…” She yanked her hands from my grip and glared at me. “Adlan…” she shook her head in uncertainty, disbelief evident in her countenance. She ruffled her hair before she spoke again. “This is insane.” “Yes. It is. I’m insane. I have no idea what’s going on with me. I can’t even think straight and Laura, we’ve only met for a couple of days now.” “It's all fake. The feeling you feel now, it isn’t real.” “You don’t know that
Laura I had lived all my life with the wall I had built around my world. Never been in a relationship, never had a first love, never had a genuine close friend and never had an experience with most typical things in life. Those walls were crashing now as I felt my back crash in my bed with our lips intertwined with passion burning through us. When he drove off, I could feel my heart break into a million pieces. I wish it wasn't that hard to see things the same way he saw things and at that moment I felt I had lost him. As I walked back in, the thoughts of how I lost my job came rushing through my head. I had lost everything. I rushed out of my clothes, ready to drown myself in the shower. I had only stepped under the shower for a few minutes when I heard the knock at the door. As I opened the door, seeing him stand by my doorway, my breath ceased for a swift second. I stared at him in shock and maybe disbelief and joy. He came back. When his lips met mine, I want

AdlanI paced outside the room, worried out of my mind. A lady who had introduced herself as Stephie came out earlier. She tried talking to me, but I had no interest in holding a conversation with a woman who was not Laura. Call me obsessive. I wondered what they were talking about. Were they fighting? I wanted Laura to be happy, and if that had to come at the expense of losing touch with her brother then so be it.I took a step towards the room, hovering between respecting their privacy and being close to Laura, when I heard a muffled thud come from inside the room. I rushed in, shocked at what I saw there. Laura sprawled awkwardly on the floor, her eyes closed and face pale, with Christian trying unsuccessfully to climb down the bed with a bandaged leg trying to get to his sister his face looking panicked."Press the call button beside your bed!” I yelled at Christian. Gosh! Was he a moron? I rushed to Laura's side, mind racing and I checked her pulse when I ascertained it was s
Adlan I could not help but get a sense of wistful nostalgia when I got up and left the place, with my phone in hand, and went into the cool night air. The call from the company was unavoidable, and a sorry thing that I could not help but take. Yet standing at the curb, with the shouting argument pulsating through my aural area. While listening to the unfolding crisis I felt transported back to the magical evening we had spent together. The dazzling back of Laura's laughing, the soft flow of her hair over her shoulders and out from her neck, the magic of her smile illuminating the room. I got a strong, unavoidable sensation to go back, to get her, to spend the evening together, to make it a nice night. I couldn't let this night go by, especially with all the new ground we were covering, on a more profound level. I saw the little present box in my hands, the one I had been ready to give her all along. In fact, it seemed like a perfect chance to put on a big production.Smiling, I went
LauraAs I watched Christian's chest rise and fall with each gentle breath, a sense of relief washed over me. He was finally awake, and the road to recovery, although long, was now in sight. Adlan's reassuring presence beside me was a comforting reminder that I wasn't alone in this journey. With Christian stable and under the care of the hospital staff, Adlan suggested we take a break and celebrate this small victory. "Let's go get some dinner," he said, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "We can finally relax and unwind."I nodded, feeling a weight lift off my shoulders. "That sounds amazing. I could use a break from this hospital food."We made our way out of the hospital, the warm evening air enveloping us like a gentle hug.The hug was something I really wanted right now. I am finally relieved that my brother is back. And heading to treatment Adlan led me to his car, and we drove to a quaint little restaurant on the outskirts of town. The sign above the door read "Bistro Bliss,"
LauraThe antiseptic smell filled the space as I stood over by Christian. The rhythmic sound of the machines was a reminder that he was still with us, but the anxiety gnawed at my insides. Following the surgery, I felt a flicker of hope, yet hope was inextricably blended with fear as I waited anxiously for him to wake.“Please, Christian,” I whispered, gripping his hand tighter. “I need you to wake up. I can’t do this without you.”My heart went out to his pallid complexion, in spite of the bruises that still lit up his appearance. The doctors had reassured me he was stable, but the unanswered one of time, if at all, he might become conscious above me, an approaching thunderstorm.“Laura,” Adlan broke my concentration and I saw him standing by the doorway with a worried expression. “How is he?”“Stable, but not awakened,” I whispered. “I just… I don’t know how much longer I can wait.”Adlan stepped beside me, his presence a steady anchor. “You’re doing everything you can. AdlanThe days that followed were a blur of emotions; anxiety, hope, despair, and determination. Laura was a relentless being, with an all-consuming love for her brother and aimed never to leave the hospital. I’m flattered by her strength and grittiness. However, I could tell that it was withering her on some deeper level. Every time I went to visit, I saw her sitting in a chair next to Christian's bed, eyes red from exhaustion and face pale. I just knew I should do something about it, even if it meant she should stop, but every time I suggested that she should discontinue, she shook her head and her eyes fixed and steadily fixed on her brother.Laura, you have to eat someone, I told her one day at lunchtime, presenting her with a casserole from the cafeteria.“I can’t,” she replied, her voice strained. “I just want to be here when he wakes up.I laid out the food on the side table next to her. “He wouldn’t want you to neglect yourself. He needs you to be healthy too.”She sighed,
LauraAsleep in the hospital room, the unimaginable carnage hung about me like a tightening fog. The maddening beeping of the heart monitor pulsed in my head, and with every beep a blast of fear spread through me. I could not look away from Christian, who lay there, frozen and exposed. The medical team swarmed around him, their faces a mask of concentration, and I felt utterly helpless.“Is he going to be okay?” I managed to choke out, my voice barely a whisper.A nurse looked toward me, a look both understandingly and insistently on her face. “We’re doing everything we can. Please, wait outside for a moment.”“No!” I cried, desperation clawing at my throat. “I can’t leave him. He needs me!”Adlan said very quietly, coming closer and stroking my shoulder. “Laura, please. Let them work. They know what they’re doing.”I fixed my gaze upon him, my pulse quickening. I saw a split second of worry in his expression. It quieted me down enough to draw a few shallow breaths. “Okay, I’ll wait.
AdlanIt was, inarguably, one of the most difficult to watch, having seen Laura plummet. I felt helpless as I stood outside the hospital room, listening to her plead with her brother to wake up. The severity of her condition made an impact on me, and I realized that whatever power I would have, I should utilize this to help her.“Hey," I said, creeping up beside her. Looking into her watery, searching eyes, her pain resonated in my very being. “You’re not alone, okay? I’m right here.”“I don’t know what I’d do without him,” she whispered, her voice cracking.I squeezed her hand, trying to offer comfort. “You won’t have to find out. We’re going to get through this together.”“I can’t lose him, Adlan. He's all that's left,” she cried, her eyes pleading.“You won’t lose him. He’s a fighter just like you. You've both been through too much to lose him, I comforted her, wishing I could take her pain away.We remained mute for a while, the sound of the hospital filling the air. Out of a desp
