I looked at what's inside the door and saw that it was stairs going downwards. I looked up at Professor Xander's face to see what he is up to but he just told me that it leads to his laboratory. I started wondering if he's gonna slice me open or something. I felt scared and the sofa I was sitting on suddenly got sliced into two.
"I'm not gonna do anything to you. My laboratory is a much better space for you to release your magic than destroying my office. It has seals to control the magic output. I use it to try experimental spells. Nothing deadly, of course." He explained.
I still have some apprehension on going down those stairs but he's right, I have been destroying his office. He's not gonna do something to me right?
Let's trust him. He's my professor anyway. Maybe I can slice him like the sofa, if he tried anything fishy.
I then glanced at the sofa and the professor seemed to see that action and just chuckled while shaking his head. His chuckle sounds cute.
He's younger than you Audrey, he's like in his early 20s and you're already 35. You're gonna get locked up.
I ignored the thought and went down the stairs following Professor Xander. It took us a long time to reach the bottom, we probably went 3 floors down and the professor's office is on the 2nd floor. There's a door at the bottom, he opened it and there's a huge room inside. It was pretty bright inside considering that this place is underground.
"There's a rune up there that lights this place up." He explained as I was staring up looking where the light was coming from.
I nodded at his explanation and entered the room. There was really nothing much in the room. The floor has stone tiles. There's an elevated floor in the middle that looks like a stage, on the left side of that stage, there's a small gazebo, and on the right side, there's what looks like an herb garden.
"Nice place, right?" He asked as I looked around in amazement.
"Were you the one who created this, professor?" I asked.
"No, I just inherited this from the former magic professor." He explained.
He led me to the stage and looked at me.
"Now, answer my questions honestly." He said.
Uh-oh.
A small flash of lightning appeared.
"No need to be that scared. I just want to know how many times have you had an outburst like that?" He asked and I tilted my head showing my confusion.
"Today was the first time that happened." I explained.
"That is not possible." He said in disbelief.
"Why?" I asked, confused.
"First of all, your control of your magic is terrible. Second, outbursts like yours happen only when the magic inside you is too much, that's why with only a slight change in your feelings it already materializes. Third, I taught you magic since first year and you were really terrible at it. I thought your aptitude was a lie." He explained and while he was explaining flashes of lightning kept on appearing, it was so embarrassing but the more embarrassed I was, the more the lightning got bigger and brighter.
"So what you're trying to say is?" I asked, not really understanding his explanation.
"It means, you do not pay attention to my lectures. Magic is a part of our life. We need to use magic, we need to let out our magic or it will go berserk like what is happening now.” He reprimanded and I just looked at him sheepishly.
“Imagine a glass full to the brim with water. What will happen if you shake it a little? The water will spill right? That's like your body full with your magic, right now. Now, you're telling me that this is the first time it happened, right?" He asked, looking for a confirmation from me and I nodded.
There was no memory from the former Audrey about her magic going berserk. She was really terrible at magic too.
"It's not possible because you're terrible at producing anything with your magic when I was teaching you. You can't even produce a decent fire, water, or even lightning, can't move the wind and earth, let's not even talk about light and dark magic attributes. In short, I felt hopeless at your magic before. So how can someone full to the brim of magic power not produce results?” He asked and I just stared at him, not knowing the answer.
“It could be because you have not enough magic left, that's why you could barely do things with magic. So now how can someone who can't control her magic deplete it so that you can't produce magic anymore?” He asked again but I really have no answers to his questions.
“And you said this is the first time it happened and honestly, with what I can see, you have a huge amount of magic in you. You must have used a huge amount of magic to deplete it every single day. With this, I can't doubt that you have a very high magic aptitude. Try to remember again, did this happen before or were you using a huge amount of magic before?" He asked solemnly.
I stared at him and tried my best to remember any incidents but no, there was nothing.
"I really don't have any memory of it, could I have forgotten when I hit my head yesterday?" I asked.
"Hmmm… that is one of the possibilities." He agreed while thinking deeply.
"One of the possibilities? There are still more?" I asked and his eyes widened.
It seems like he didn't want to tell me that.
"Yeah but my other theory needs a little bit more research." He replied.
"Can I know?" I asked.
"When I'm done with my research. Now, I need you to release some of your magic here so it will stop overflowing." He said and changed the topic.
I didn't ask further and tried to follow his instructions but I realize that I actually don't really know how to.
"Um… professor, can we have a remedial class for the fundamentals of magic?" I asked.
"Sure. Which part?" He asked.
"Ummm… the part on how to produce magic? Also if we use magic to release the excess magic how is the magic within us replenished?" I asked innocently.
"You mean to tell me, you want me to teach you everything from day 1 again." He said.
He looked very displeased.
Can you blame him, Audrey? That's 1 year worth of lectures.
But it wasn't me who didn't pay attention. It was the former Audrey. I'm not the best student on earth but at least I do study.
After practicing my magic the rest of the day, I finally arrived at my room. I am so tired, I just wanted to collapse in bed and wake up tomorrow.
"Would you like to eat dinner now, my lady?" Carmella asked.
"Yes, please." I replied.
Carmella got busy with my dinner preparations while I reorganized what I learned today.
It seems like my capability to hold magic is quite huge but for some reason I was not able to make use of it before.
I was quite terrible at magic for someone who has talent for it. According to Professor Xander, I'm depleting my magic every day that I'm only able to hold the bare minimum amount of magic. Magic also replenishes itself when you're not using it, it's like blood, if you lose blood, your body will regenerate again to make up for that lost blood.
Professor Xander taught me the fundamentals of magic again and finally I was able to produce a small fire. I thought it would be easy creating things with magic. I need to keep on practicing until I actually have the right amount of control to produce my expected result. It was hard to find that balance.
I spent the whole day underground but was only able to produce fire, water and lightning on my will and not by sudden outburst. I had also unintentionally skipped potion class. I only remembered that I still have class when the professor told me it's time to go home since it's getting late. Imagine my shock when he told me it's already the 17th hour.
No wonder I felt so tired and hungry, I haven't eaten anything other than breakfast. When Carmella arrived with my food. I wolfed it down. I can be a proper lady another day but I'm terribly hungry now. Carmella looked shocked with my action. She has probably been wondering what has happened to me.
"Carmella, be honest with me. Tell me what you think about me now?" I asked after I finished eating.
"My lady seems to be maturing now. She is turning into a fine lady like her late mother." She replied.
"You have just seen me wolf down my dinner, right?" I asked her.
"Yes, but it's also the first time I've seen my lady eat that much, it made me happy. I think the lady needs to eat more.” She explained.
The former Audrey barely ate anything. She has a very little appetite, other than that, the food served to her is quite small also. She was not allowed to eat with her father's family. She usually eats her meals in her room.
I can't even say she was living. It's like she's a doll that follows her father's command. It's sad remembering her life. Carmella and others tried so hard to get her to live for herself but she preferred quietly shutting herself in her room and reading books.
I'm also not the type of person who goes out and has fun every other night but even I still have some sort of life outside work and my home. I do meet up with my friends no matter how rare that occasion is.
"Carmella starting today, I would change from being passive and just following orders to someone who is worthy to be the head of the House of Garrick. I'm done with acting meek. It also looks like I'm beginning to be an eyesore to them. What happened yesterday is only the beginning, it's my wake up call. I can't ignore what happened and continue being silent anymore because they would definitely not think twice in killing me to achieve what they want. Would you still stand by me Carmella?" I asked her sincerely.
"Yes, my lady. Whatever my lady has decided to do, I will follow." She replied resolutely.
I hope with this, she won't notice that I'm not the former Audrey.
"Carmella, do you prefer the 'me' now or the 'me' before? Be honest." I told her."I prefer the 'Lady Audrey' who could live her life to the fullest. For you to live your life with no regrets, my lady. It's not just me who wished that, it's everyone who had sworn loyalty to the house of Garrick." Carmella said solemnly."No regrets huh. What if I tell you, I don't want to marry the crown prince. That I want to take charge of our ducal house." I told her."Then I and the rest of your servants will follow my lady's order." She vowed."Be honest with me, how high are my chances in becoming the head of the house?" I asked."It's… impossible. The law doesn't allow it. Unless the law changes, there is no possibility for you
I'm on my way to Professor Xander's office to practice my magic again or to drain my magic so I don't have random outbursts. I entered his office and saw that no one was inside as I had expected. That is the reason why he had given a key to his office. He told me last night that he still has a class by the 14th hour and that he would be free to join me after the 15th hour. I just finished my last afternoon class, calligraphy. Let's not talk about my calligraphy, there is a reason why I chose a computer major. I proceed to the underground room, and begin my attempt in creating fire again. First, I need to balance the right amount of mana to produce fire. Mana is the magic energy inside our body so using less mana produces less fire or even no fire at all and large amounts of mana produces a large fire or large explosions. The amount of mana used is propo
When it became the 17th hour, Professor Xander stopped the practice and told me to go home. "Professor, I have some questions not related to magic." I said testing the waters but he only looked at me and was waiting for me to continue. I'm just wondering if he would answer questions after the 17th hour. Also, he might not be interested in talking to me if it's not related to magic. "Is there a way for me to earn money here in the institution?" I asked. "None. Students here are all noble. The institution can't exactly ask them to work for money." He replied. Right. They came here to study. What do snotty nobles know how to do anyway? Wait, that means I'm also a snotty noble now.
I was walking in the hallway going to the clinic when I met my lovely little sister Emily with her henchmen. She's looking as cute as ever with her blonde curls, which she inherited from her mother. I think what makes her cuter is her size, she's petite and has a very loveable aura. But if you ask me, I think she's trying too hard to look the part. Unlike me, who is naturally pretty and has an air of elegance, yes, I'm talking about me. I look a little pale and malnourished but that's nothing that can't be fixed with healthy meals and exercise. "Sister, how are you? I heard you were in an accident the other day." She said when she met me, looking all worried. "I am alright now Lady Emily. Thank you for your concern." I replied meekly. "Are you sure? I heard you fell
When I arrived at the training ground, Professor Xander also asked about my eyes and I told him the same thing as I told Healer Jan that I was a damsel in distress but he only raised his eyebrows at me. He then proceeded with giving me lessons about light and dark attributes as the two of them are both special attributes. Light attributes are those that increase a person's capability like different kinds of heal and enhancement while dark attributes are those that hinder a person's capability like stun, poison, and the like. He also explained how to produce these kinds of magic as they are a bit different from producing and manipulating magic. It's actually a bit of both. Professor Xander prepared a frog for me to practice on but the lecture took the whole morning. By the 10th hour, I asked Professor Xander
Once the 15th hour came, Carmella started preparing the milk she collected and the tools I asked her to be created for butter and heavy cream making. While we took a break, I helped Carmella and explained the process. It's not really that hard but she might be turning the knob on the tool for a few hours until we can create butter. Professor Xander and Healer Jan got curious about the tool used to create butter and asked what it was for. I explained to them about the process and they looked interested. They watched Carmella turn the knob but after a few minutes, they lost interest when nothing happened. I told them, it will take hours. These little boys… tsk tsk... I left Carmella and continued to practice while checking on her from time to time. After the first hour
"Why is it Xander's name written here and not yours?" He asked when he read the contract. "I can't exactly use my name for certain reasons." I said. "So? Why are you using Xander's name? You can use your maid's name." He said. "Because if I use her or any of my people's names, it will go back to me. I have some circumstances at my own home that prevent me from doing so." I said. "But still why Xander's?" He asked. "Because the professor was the one who suggested you and I trust him. This contract is only good for 2 years after that. Depending on the circumstances I can change the name of the contract but for now, I'll be using his name. After all, if my circumstances get out of hand, the contract can serve as your eviden
The following day Carmella and I headed to the town and met our former head chef, Greg. We decided to have the meeting in our still closed store. It's a good thing, we are allowed to go out of the campus during weekends. Most students return to their homes but Audrey wasn't allowed by her father to come home. It seems like he wanted to pretend she doesn't exist. "Good morning Lady Audrey. I am Greg and this is Meir, he's a patissier." He greeted us when we arrived. "Good morning Greg, Meir. I'm glad you could meet up with me." I said. We all sat down on the only available chair and table as the store is still not fully completed yet. Our agenda for today is food tasting. I have given them a few ingredients to play from and I'm hoping to see the results of their work. I gave them the recipe for creating fruit jam
I can't believe this day is finally happening. The sky is blue and the birds are chirping happily. Everyone is anticipating this day. I'm so nervous right now, I'm scared to make a mistake. What if I trip and fall face first? That would be really embarrassing. "Saintess, it's your turn." One of the attendants told me and I shakily walked to the center aisle. Don't trip. Don't trip. Smile. This is a happy day. I've safely arrived at the stage and smiled at Xavier. He looked as nervous as I was. The commentator said something that I can barely hear due to my nervousness. I just need to wait for the signal and do my part. It didn't take long before the commentator gave me the signal. One of the attendants came forward with the crown. Don't drop the crown. Don't dr
"Who is getting married to whom?" I asked, shocked. "You to me." He stated. "Xander, you don't need to do this for me but thank you." I replied and entered the mansion. I appreciate Xander's kindness but I think Lady Julia needs him more than me. He doesn't need to sacrifice his love for her just to save me from my predicament. I have 5 years, I'm sure I'll find someone. Another week of adjusting from the aftermath of the dragon case and I'm already bored. Yes, that's right. Bored. I have achieved all my previous goals the past year and now, I suddenly lost my purpose so I'm here in my mansion sipping my tea. I've just finished breakfast and now, I'm wondering what to do next. Should I go back to the duchy? There must be something to do in the duchy. Should I?
A week has passed since the verdict was announced to the public. Count Blyth was executed 3 days later, Stefan and the former queen were sent to the borders, and my father, Lady Madelyn and Emily were sent to prison. They still tried to appeal to me for help but since I'm not crazy, I ignored all their appeals. They are already lucky I'm not suing them for their attempted murder on me. I also met the former queen in the prison before they left for the border. I've asked her what I had been very curious about for a long time now. Why did she put a seal on me?"I didn't put a seal on you." She replied when I asked her. "Really?" I replied sarcastically. "You are not Audrey." She said and I was shocked.
The next day, Carmella woke me up early and helped me get dressed. After we went to see Lady Julia yesterday, I was out of it. I couldn't believe what was happening. I felt betrayed but I also felt so sorry for her. I mean I should have known, right? I was being self centered and only saw my problems. I didn't even realize she was suffering, no, I ignored it. I was too preoccupied with my jealousy that I didn't see the signs. "My lady, you are ready." Carmella said when she saw me just standing there. I looked at the reflection once more before going out. Xander was waiting for me outside. I couldn't look at Xander after we left the Tower of Magi yesterday. I don't know how to face him. I don't know or want to know if he knew why Lady Julia acted the way she did. "Are you ready?" Xander asked when he saw me
"I know the person?" I asked, shocked. Xander nodded gravely. "It's Julia." He said and I looked at him shocked. I couldn't speak for a few moments and tried to understand what he was trying to tell me but I just couldn't comprehend it. "No. There must be a mistake. I mean why would she poison me? There's nothing she can gain in doing that. She must have been framed. There's no way." I told him and denied their accusations to Lady Julia vehemently but he just sighed sadly. "The poison was found on her body." Xander explained. "Someone could have put it on her." I reasoned but Xander shook his head. "She admitted to poisoning you
Healer Jan let me rest inside my tent while Xander guarded me. I fell asleep quite fast as I was very tired from the battle. My muscles are aching. I wanted to rest but I couldn't sleep deeply. I am having a very light sleep. I can hear the rustling of people walking around my tent. "Thank you for coming back, Audrey." I heard Xander say as he stroked my hair. He kept on murmuring things but I couldn't really understand them in my half awake state. I'm going in and out of consciousness which is very irritating when you just want to sleep. I guess my mind was still hyperactive due to the battle. I tried to relax my brain but it really wasn't working. I heard someone enter the tent. "Hey Xander. How is Audrey?" I heard Lad
"Audrey!" I heard someone call my name. I opened my eyes and saw that everything was white and in front of me and I saw my reflection. Is this the other side? Is it over? "Audrey?" My reflection called, which shocked me, after all, reflections don't talk. "Audrey?" She called once again. I looked at my hands and noticed that it's not the hands of Lady Audrey but my hands, the programmer Audrey. "Am I hallucinating?" I asked. "No. This is the place where our soul stays in our body." Audrey or Lady Audrey explained. "In our body? You are still in this body? Did I possess your body?" I asked, shocked.
Everything happened fast, after he breathed fire on Xander and the others. He charged towards the knights and the weapons, and destroyed it. Afterwards it set its eyes on me and charged towards me. I evaded the attack and used the earth magic to throw rocks at the dragon and pulled it down towards the ground before I looked around and saw the damage. Time suddenly felt very slow, I saw bodies on the ground. I saw the healers running and trying to save those that they could. I kept on looking where Xander was but I couldn't see them. I saw Lis shouting at me. "Audrey! Audrey! Snap out of it and move!" I finally heard what she was shouting about. "Xander…" I called out but I didn't hear any reply. The dragon tried to
"Are you alright?" Adekin asked. "I'm alive." I replied. It feels like we've been fighting the dragon for a week now but honestly I'm not even sure if an hour has passed or not already. I'm physically tired. I should have also trained my body. I almost got trampled by the dragon if Adekin didn't save me. "You need to be more careful." Adekin chided. "I know but my stamina is bad." I replied as I tried to catch my breath. "Tell Xavier to start firing the new cannons to the dragon. The mages are running out of mana. Tell him to keep it busy while the mages regain their mana." I told him and assessed the situation with the dragon. Sussie and Xander are currently fighting
