Chapter four.

Emily's POV.

I groaned in pain, as I felt rays of sunlight hitting my heavy eyelids.

The discomfort prodded me to push my eyes open but as soon as I did, a sharp groan escaped my lips and I quickly squeezed them shut almost immediately as a heavy pound of pain hit me hard on the forehead.

I slowly reached out to feel whatever I was lying on and it was a warm, floppy bed. Then it suddenly struck me, this was far from being my home.

The events of the previous night suddenly came rushing back to my head in a heavy rush.

I could remember signing the divorce papers and leaving the house wandering through the cold street before the loud noise from behind then I crashed into a hard surface and passed out.

If I could recall everything that happened then it only meant one thing...

I wasn't dead, I survived through the cold street of New York.

That was such a relief.

But then, just when I was about relaxing back to take a deep breath, a loud bang screeched through my head.

Where was I?

Totally ignoring the loud bang in my head, I proceeded to force my eyes open, I couldn't help the painful yelp that escaped my mouth as the sharp rays of sunlight surged into my eyes.

My head felt like the location of a band conference as I strained my eyes to catch a glimpse of my surroundings.

A few seconds into my misery, my vision became a lot clearer, I could make out a few things around me now as I spun my head around frantically.

It was a hospital ward, and I was lying on the bed.

Surprisingly, I had a bandage wrapped at the side of my forehead where I had hit on the hard surface. Who could possibly be responsible for all this?

Almost immediately, my ears sharply caught the rustling key sound at the door.

Someone was coming in.

I quickly recoiled back to the bed, pretending to still be unconscious.

I could hear heavy footsteps parading the room, and from my instincts, I could tell there was more than one person in the room now.

"Oh thank goodness, the cut looks better now," I heard a thick voice say.

That didn't sound like a voice I knew from anywhere; but whoever it was, sounded genuinely concerned about my situation.

"She's responding to treatment quite surprisingly," a lady's voice came next.

Who could they possibly be?

As much as I wanted to snap my eyes open and at least catch a glimpse of their faces, I couldn't risk it, not when my faith was still undecided.

I held in my breath so tightly, my eyes squeezed shut as I continued to lay lifelessly on the bed.

Cold silence suddenly set in, I couldn't feel their movements anymore neither did they speak any more word, but I could tell that they were still in the room.

"Your brows are twitching miss, you are awake." I nearly jumped out of my skin as her words sounded through my head.

I couldn't believe my damn brows gave me away.

Slowly and shamefully, I pushed my eyes open.

Standing tall over me, was a strikingly handsome man, well-bodied and heavily hung; though Liam remained with the crown.

Why am I even comparing them? And in this situation?

Standing beside him was an aged woman who I assumed to be the doctor following her outfit.

"Who are you?" I swallowed hard trying not to sound as scared as I truly am.

He took a step closer towards the bed and I recoiled back in fright.

"Don't come any closer!" I flared up.

"Relax, you are out of danger," he spoke really gently, a soft chuckle leaving his mouth.

As much as he appeared harmless, I was in a strange place without any slightest clue how to make it out, falling for his mere appearance was a big risk.

"That doesn't answer any question, who are you? And how did I get here?" I was beginning to get a bit louder now, my gaze darting fiercely from each of them to the other.

Of course, the ugly experience with my ex-husband has taught me a bitter lesson never to let anyone take advantage of my weakness.

I watched as they turned to glance at each other, then back at me.

"What's your name? Tell me you still remember please and this isn't a case of amnesia," I chuckled as the words left his mouth.

He seem to be cheerful, speaking calmly and flashing me reassuring smiles while trying to make simple jokes.

"Emily," I managed to mutter, and surprisingly, a huge smile broke out on his face.

"I haven't seen a name fit anyone so perfectly," he muttered.

"Will you tell me how I got here now?" I snapped, ignoring his attempt to be sweet.

"Well, Emily, I'm Adrian, and this is Doctor Bridget," he introduced pointing at the woman.

"I ran you over with my car last night, it was totally unintentional, I wasn't in the right frame of mind, I'm sorry," he explained further.

I stared blankly at him, totally speechless; what do I say to him? A word of appreciation for not running away after hitting me? Or when he'd like for me to vacate the hospital bed since I'm awake now?

"Uhm... Thank... Thank you for bringing me here," I stuttered.

"I'm just going to leave immediately," I made to climb down the bed but he signaled me to stop with a wave of his hand.

"You are not properly healed yet, it's dangerous," the doctor finally spoke up for the first time since I opened my eyes.

"Do you have anyone I could call to come get you at least," Adrian's next words hit me hard across the ear as sudden realization hit me. I was actually alone in the world now.

I could call Jared but I wanted nothing to do with the Johnsons anymore.

"I'll find a way, don't worry about it," I smiled weakly.

"I'm sorry but I can't let you out if I'm not sure of your safety, so you'll stay until we figure something out."

I stared blankly at him, unable to utter a word.
