"Your highness, Keir asked to see you," a bodyguard in his velvet armour politely said to Prince Zaeius.
"Let him in," he answered while playing the tip of his hair and the bodyguard opened the door for Keir.
"I told you! You shouldn't have took her in and I should've let her crawl on her own! She's crazy!" Keir bluntly said out loud as soon as he entered the prince's hall, clenching his fists.
His voice echoed to the other end of the hall making multiple, fading mimics.
The prince was confused at first by the way his forehead furrowed but then eventually realized what Keir meant. He stood on his seat and fixed the collar of his royal blue and golden yellow clothing. Its beads glittered upon the luminous light of the grandiose chandelier from above them, were made of the same color too.
"Aroh, leave us alone," the prince ordered his bodyguard.
"Yes, your majesty." Aroh bowed and left the room without hesitation.
After the bodyguard left, a dead atmosphere filled the room. It was like any second now, a bloody battle would began.
"Watch your mouth. You're talking about a woman," Prince Zaeius calmly said, breaking the silence.
Keir was confused by the way he talked. He could tell the sudden change of his expression. But he couldn't tell if it was anger or was just shocked. His calm and composed nature was nowhere to be found in him anymore—the nature that almost every woman in the kingdom died for.
Keir took a deep breath trying to calm himself down.
"Right. A woman who just tried to kill me awhile ago," he couldn't help but let his disappointment out.
'I was right from the very start. She'll bring no good to him nor to me'
"I...She what? But how?" Now the prince couldn't even believe what he said. "She's dying when we found her. That's impossible!"
"Do you think I'm lying? You can't just defend a stranger like that!" Keir defended himself. "Look, if you want to get married right now, at least find someone suitable for you. Not some limped, crazy stranger!"
Keir couldn't help his anger anymore. If only the prince could take care of her on his own, he wouldn't have nearly get killed! What if he really died? What about his parents' dream for him?
"I said stop it! I didn't mean it that way! It's just that—you don't trust me, do you?!" Prince Zaeius explained, already losing his self.
He knew it was quite ridiculous to say something like that with the given situation. Once Keir would lose his temper, it would cause him a lot of trouble. Like he'd never talk or visit him for months. He remembered when they were little Keir fell off a guava fruit because he climbed it for him. And it was his fault for asking him to.
But even the prince wasn't aware of they way he acted. Something had ignited him. He didn't thought he'd get irritated with just this simple argument. Between the two of them, he was the most composed one. He rarely lose his patience.
"I trust you but my trust for you will kill me! Now tell me how would I just sit back and relax?! We'll turn her over to the homeless shelter until her family finds her. I'm done helping her." Instead of fighting back, Keir started walking away, releasing his heated fist from being balled.
Keir didn't care about what he's going to react anyway. He'll do it his way!
"Hey! Where are you going?" Prince Zaeius called him from the back.
He suddenly heard footsteps on the smooth marble floor towards him.
"To the royal inn. I'm sending her off," Keir answered making his pace faster towards the royal hall's magnificent hall.
'Besides, treating someone that badly wounded is too much for my beginner's skill.'
He's right though. He had only just practiced healing a month ago. How's that possible for him to treat her? Not to mention that he almost lost his life this morning. It's probably one of the most dangerous moment in his life!
When he was about to open the thick timber door, he noticed that the footsteps had gone silent. Keir turned to look back at his friend. He's surprised to see him standing still, looking blankly at his faint reflection on the surface of the floor.
Keir knew that something was wrong. Since when did he last saw the prince like this again? He couldn't remember anymore. Lowering his pride, he silently walked towards him. The prince just ignored his appearance.
"What's wrong?" he asked with a little hesitation completely swallowing his pride.
Now the situation had flipped. A moment ago, he was the one who lost it but now the prince had it instead.
"Yeah..." Prince Zaeius finally spoke under his breath. "I think we should send her away."
Keir was somewhat relieved but he saw...pain in his friend's face. Though he tried to conceal it with his blank expression but he knew him better. Guilt had taken him but his decision was final. He's not helping her anymore. Even if its the prince's will.
"Let's go." Prince Zaeius calmly walked passed him.
They travelled a day and a night. Over the plains and narrow passes between towering mountains. Across a barren desert and rivers and marshes.
When they arrived at the royal inn's entrance, Keir noticed a crowd gathering in front of the room's porch where the girl was staying.
"What's happening here?" Keir asked them but their eyes were laid on the prince from behind him and made a way for them.
"Your highness..." They said together and bowed before him.
"We heard someone crying hard in there, asking for help. My husband and my son went to see what's going on but they're not yet back for hours and the door can't be opened. Please help me, your highness! I'm begging you," a lady with a baby in her arms, cried and begged.
Suddenly, they heard something splashed from the inside and stained the white curtains. It was blood! Everyone panicked and moved back. The lady let out a loud, terrified shout and fell on her knees.
"Stay back. Don't worry. We will get them back," the prince assured after helping her up.
Keir and Prince Zaeius destroyed the door. Dozens of necks from behind them peeked. All were shocked when they saw nothing but blood everywhere. Not a single trace was found about the whereabouts of the lady's husband and son.
There in the corner was the girl, curled up on her knees, dripping on her hair were drops of blood and sweat. Then something heavy passed above the roof that the pillars almost gave out. It's force made the lighted candles went out and everything went black except for the moonlight outside. A gigantic tail full of scales sparkled from the window never ceased to escape from their eyes, as it sought itself from the nearby forest and disappeared.
All of the people went back to their rooms scared. At the moment, the prince already knew what it was. He thought he's already killed it. Now, fear slowly engulfed him. He feared that maybe it came back to take revenge for what he did. He feared that many lives will be in danger because of his failure.
"That...that was the— I thought you already killed it?" Keir had curled his tail.
He couldn't believe what they just saw and hid himself behind the prince.
"I thought so, too," Prince Zaeius replied while staring blankly at the window, still distinguishing if what happened was just a dream or not.
The next day, the news about the incident spread like a wild fire. The kingdom was alerted and had everyone taken precautions which included to stay at home when the sun sets because that thing had its history of hunting on night time.
The king was outraged the most. He knew it won't attack if it wasn't disturbed in the first place. For now, he'd sent elite squads to investigate the crime. He had to find that person who did it for he had known that 'that thing' only take its revenge on the one who disturbed it. If not, it will continue to look for that person and everyone in its way will surely be devoured.
In the morning after the incident, Keir and Prince Zaeius visited Méah. They came to send her to the homeless shelter. Her condition was still the same but what made the two men wonder was the sudden disappearance of some of her minor wounds especially those on her feet, leaving no scars at all.
'How come there's not a single scar left? Those wounds were just fresh yesterday when I treated it,'
However, Keir didn't care. She'll be sent sooner anyway.
"Did someone treat your wounds while I'm not here?" Keir asked Méah with the same cold voice.
But she didn't respond at all. She was just curled up again in the corner of her bed, trying to fit herself in such a small space.
"Could you at least talk properly? You're scaring her," Prince Zaeius interjected.
'What's wrong with him? Eversince she came, he's been like that. Has he fallen for her? What a bad taste! She looks like she won't live for a few more days.'
"I'm talking properly. It's not my fault if she got scared," Keir defended, irritated. " Excuse me."
Keir left to buy some hot tea. In fact, did it on purpose. He knew something was bothering the prince. And of course, he knew she's the reason why. It should be her.
When he was about to close the door behind him, something caught his attention. A small rolled paper, just a forefinger long.
'A scroll?'
Keir picked it up and started unrolling it. But afterwards, he found out that its folded thrice. Somehow, he suddenly felt a little bit nervous for an unknown reason.
The moment he completely unfolded it, a bolt of nervousness hit him. An old paper smell caressed his face. Guilt crawled over him. He should've never lost his patience. Now he completely understood.
'So that explains why.'
The smell of the hot tea lingered inside Keir's throat. He felt like he didn't want to drink it anymore. He'd been like this whenever he encountered something that could trouble his mind. Overthinking and losing interest in everything, to name a few. Keir had been standing here in front of the room, stuck between knocking right away or thinking first before knocking. To be honest, he didn't have any idea on how to approach the prince. His pride had been brutally lowered on his own will. Now that he had changed his mind, it would totally cost it a total lose. Later, Keir just found himself knocking with his free hand. "Come in!" Prince Zaeius answered inside. Keir walked in with a tray of hot tea and teacups and rice cakes. He put it on the little table beside Méah's b
"Report!" a voice echoed throughout the royal hall. "Your majesty! The southern part of Belkoln Town is under attack! We need more men to defend it and its people." An exhausted soldier hurriedly came in. "Alright. I will send aid right away," King Astius answered without hesitation. "Yes, your majesty." The soldier bowed and left. The royal adviser beat the cup-sized bell with an iron rod. After it echoed everywhere, a sound of a ringing bell answered from afar. It came nearer and nearer. At last, a blue-eyed, black owl with a small bell hanging on its neck came in flying. It landed at the back of the caller's hand then left after a rolled piece of paper was put on its claws. Just as the king was about to leave
'Could I at least get a more sensible one?'Keir let out a deep, shaky breath as he slowly closed his eyes, forgetting about how will he be able to defend themselves. If this was really going to be his end, then he didn't have the strength to look how it's going to happen. After all, how could a coward like him stand a chance against this monster? The ground roared as it swiftly closed the gap between the helpless healer. Everything on its way were torn into pieces. He could feel the thick dust that accompanied the devastating force from afar powdered his damp skin. An ear-splitting crash towards him made him feel like his soul would leave him anytime.'One...two...three...' Keir whispered in the air while shutting his eyes tightly. His hands felt numb but his shoulders could feel that they were shaking uncontrollably.Unexpectedly, the supposed to be horrendous scene that Keir had imagined to happen was replaced by a moment of silence. He c
"Why, hello there little pup! Are you lost by any chance?" a dark-skinned man covered with tattoos and piercings mocked the stranger. The rest of them laughed maniacally. The stranger remained silent, wearing an expressionless face. He's just standing there with an unusual posture. It was like he would fall to the ground any second soon as half of his body seemed to drag him down. A soft breeze blew the loose strands of messed hair into his pale face, waving in front of his blank eyes. "I said leave him alone." His cracked lips slightly raised forming into a mischievous smirk. "You're not kidding us, right?" the tallest one with a braided hair forwarded towards the stranger. Another set of annoying laughters followed. "Come on! Let's dance, b
By the time she spat those words out, the woman already knew something's wrong with Méah. And her thoughts of earning big benefits through her was replaced by full disappointment. 'Useless crap.' Unlocking Méah's arms around her, she left the room with no words, banging the door heavily from the outside. "Wait! Where are you going? Let us play!" Méah blurted out. Tears started forming on her eyes, she started throwing tantrums. 'I just wanted to play with her! Why did she left me? Did she hate me?' "Blonde Fairy! Don't leave yet! I want to play with you!" she squealed between her heavy "Hmm..."
Along the steep trails through the misty forest, a mile away from the graveyard, three silhouettes traipsed. Daylight created irregular patterns of shadows and sharp glows from the leaves that waved to and fro, hanging from the towering trees above them. The cool caress of the fresh breeze beneath the forest gave them chills instead. If not because of the hair-raising, lingering mist that had been there for they don't even know how long, they would have appreciated the relaxing ambience that nature provided. "Man, why would Lady Shiah want some crappies for the ceremony?! I'm sure no one's alive after being disposed in that damned place!" the youngest one taunted, diverting the fear that had slowy engulfed his mind. They never wanted to step on that rotten place. None of them. Considering that they're not a
'Don't cry, Méah' a cold, deep voice echoed in her head. Another bolt of vivid images flashed like a lightning strike before her eyes. There were voices screaming....people...hands dripping with blood...all pointing at her! 'Méah! You're a monster!' 'You don't deserve to live!' 'You're a demon's daughter! You must die!' 'You'll pay for everything!' 'You brought disasters to this town, Méah!' 'Monster!' 'Unfortunate orphan!'
"Good heavens!" Bek exclaimed as soon as the horrible image of Méah's wound on her back, flashed before his eyes. It took a long time removing the cloth that had glued itself above it, like a bandage on a wound that had been left unattended for weeks. The stinking smell of a rotten flesh made the old man cough for several times. Ferlah who was on her other side to assist, immediately looked away, not saying anything. Undeniably, there were something tiny wriggling on it, lively playing through the holes of the dead flesh. The wound had grown these filthy parasites the time it got infected, slowing down its healing process. Some would even flick themselves out, causing them to fall to the ground, as though rebelling about what happened to their shelter. Above all, of course, Méah suffered
The golden rays of the sun broke out through the thick, dark clouds that were slowly dissipating away. The sun sat above the golden capped mountains in the west, about a few minutes before it would rest from a long day of work. The bright light vanished and the small crystal ball fell on Keir's chest. Then it slowly disappeared as soon as it touched his skin. Kalen was greeted by the silence of the world. The thick fog was cleared and the sky was full of hope. But for him, it wasn't the same sky anymore. It was the sky of new life and new beginnings. He looked around and everyone was lying on the ground. There was no trace of Purple Smoke. But he recognised Méah's figure lying ahead of him for half a mile away by her clothes and armour. However, as much as he wanted to check on them, he would have to chose his brother first who was lying right next to him. But judging on Keir's injuries, Kalen decided not to touch him. The arro
"Useless!" Purple Smoke screamed in both fury and disappointment. She hated it when someone fails her and had a long history on it. To her anger, struck Méah with her palm on the chest. Méah flew a few yards away from where she stood. But she didn't complain. For Purple Smoke was her master and the only one who has the authority to do anything to her. She rolled on the ground for a couple times and spat out black blood. She was on knees but her face was still blank and didn't show any hint of pain. Purple Smoke faced Keir and the princess's body. Her vision quickly darkened. "Love. This is what love bring to people. What a pity. They're even willing to die because of it." She grinned. While she was feeling the moment of victory, she heard a swooshing blade coming from behind her. She quickly avoided it and saw Kalen. "Oh, another silly boy. But I like you already. You're braver than your brother." "I w
After they ran away and the battlefield was almost emptied, Purple Smoke was furious when she saw Méah kneeling on the ground, frozen like a statue. She couldn't believe a simple trick could affect Méah. "Come, my dear." Purple Smoke walked in front of Méah. She bent down and held Méah's chin up. Black and purple veins appeared on her neck down to her arms. Then all of it crawled into Méah's chin down to her neck, spreading towards her back. Her injuries were healed and the arrows were burnt into ashes. Méah stood up straight. "Avenge yourself. Kill them all. Kill." Purple Smoke whispered to her ears. "But first, I want you to do something." Then, Méah suddenly disappeared in Purple Smoke's eyes. She was now off to do what she's told to do. Purple Smoke burst into a boisterous laughter. But she eventually stopped when a loud blow of horn was caught in her ears. Among all the four kingdoms, only one would use horn
The three of them were in utter astonishment when they saw the enemies were swarming again. They had no idea where they came from but now they seemed stronger than those that they fought with earlier. King Astius shoulders dropped. At the other end, he saw the Deep Caves and everyone struggling to defend it. The enemies were about to break in. "What the hell! They're like locusts!" Keir cursed under his breath. Suddenly, they heard screams coming from behind them, the main gate from the city of Noartias. As they turned around, they saw the remaining of their soldiers, the war veterans and majority of Eastian soldiers who were assigned to defend the city. They were rushing to the battlefield, ready to give their life for the sake of the world. And then, they joined them to launch an attack on the battleground. Weapons clashed hard against each other. Some tasted flesh, blood and bones. Blood were splattered everywhere, leaving a crimsom
"Oh no! They're here! They're breaking in!" Queen Jainah cowered into the corner of the room in the royal underground where they were hiding. Princess Jiyanah sat down with her, arms snaked on one arm of her mother. King Ambrose wasn't there with them because he was out in the battlefield. Unlike Noartias, Eastias don't have any shelter like the Deep Caves but they have a vast underground shelter that they called as the Underground Shelter, enough to cater the whole kingdom's population. It has one entrance which can only be found in the secret chamber of the royal hall. The five exits extend in five directions away from the kingdom's borders. Four of it share the same distance while the other one was the longest which almost reaches the border's pf Noartias. King Zarduz was the first kingdom to surrender to Purple Smoke. Being named as the weakest, poor kingdom, King Zarduz chased the opportunity to get power, enough to purge a strong kingdom l
Ferlah brought King Astius to the Deep Caves. After that, she left back to the battlefield outside. More enemies were coming. They don't seem to decrease at all. The more of them die, the more of them come. Prince Zaeius and the mysterious woman in red were trying hard to defend the door of the shelter. General Kapono was defending the walls together with the rest of the soldiers since the enemies were trying to climb up through tall ladders. Seeing all of these, King Astius didn't think twice to carry out his responsibility. He climbed to where the archers were stationed on the walls. "Aim for the enemies! Kill them! Leave none of them alive!" He shouted. Upon seeing his presence, the soldiers' morale was boosted. Their spirits soared high and their hearts filled with hope. From afar, Ferlah could be seen battling alone. She couldn't risk to transform herself so that she won't get exhausted when it was time to go
When King Astius and the rest of the troops arrived at Noartias, they were flabbergasted by the army of the enemies flocking inside. Only a few of the war veterans were left standing, fighting bravely despite being outnumbered. King Astius was suddenly eaten by guilt. He blamed himself for not seeing the trap ahead of them which made him led the whole Noartian army into deception. The moment they stepped a foot inside the kingdom, the bloody clash began. The enemies looked like a swarm of locusts, attacking them in every possible way. There were clamours of death and courage as well as the shatters and clatters of weapons. Blood were spilled everywhere and the parched ground quenched its thirst through it. While King Astius was slaughtering the enemies, he suddenly remembered the prince. Fear struck him hard. He wished his son was safe in the royal underground as it was difficult to find. But judging from the prince's behaviour, he probably
"Méah!" With eyes closed, Prince Zaeius screamed in terror and sat up from his sleep without even knowing. He just had a horrible nightmare about Méah dying, covered in blood and vanishing into thin air. However, even though it was just a nightmare, he began to pray to himself that it would only remain as a nightmare. As his breathing slowly calmed down, the throbbing pain came raging from all over his body, starting to penetrate deeper into his senses. He let out a painful hiss with a twisted expression as he went weak and limp, slumping himself back into the soft mattress of his bed. An agonizing groan followed that made him shut his eyes in a tight manner. With this, it all came back to him. But despite after being rescued and seeing the woman he loved in that situation, the flashes of tortures that he had gone through in the hands of Purple smoke held a consistent spot in his memory. That no matter how hard he tried to set
The awaited dawn finally came. It was summer but the breeze, though it blew calm and gentle, felt like a touch of a blizzard's chill. Passing through the steep trails of well-tilled earth, forests, rivers and marshes, a couple of hundred thousand men set off from Noartias to the battlefield under the command of King Astius. This was the last number that he could bring with him. And not all of them were soldiers. Some were mere folks, men and women but brave and courageous, who voluntarily swore to protect their kingdom, their homes and their families. Every abled person in no particular age requirement were allowed to go to battle with them as long as they can walk at such distance and can ride on horses and fight with willingness. However, as he couldn't leave the kingdom and the people alone unguarded, he left this task to the war veterans of less than thirty thousand. Half of them guarded the kingdom with Kalen among them and Bek was told to stay with o
