Orel dumped me on the neck of a horse and threw his body on the horse immediately, it happened very fast for him but I am sure that it is his usual speed he uses. The horse took off as I tried my best to stay on the saddle, at my struggle, he rearranged me on his horse and that should be impossible to achieve, I did not know how he did but I was too busy trying to remain in the saddle to worry about it.
And that was when I realized, with Orel’s palm on my back that meant that he kept just one hand on the reins and the horse was moving so fast that I am sure it was like an arrow flying through the air.
“Stop struggling, you will not come to any harm, not under my watch.” He said gruffly but unlike in the fields, I was not reassured by his words at all.
“That is nice to know but you keeping one hand on the reins is not very reassuring sir.” I bit out with a sarcastic edge, I was purposely antagonizing him and he knew it… his reaction was what I was hoping to help me survive in the minefield I just found myself, better a minefield than death I suppose.
Orel chuckled again as if my biting words were that of a jester to make people laugh. “Stormpacer is an intelligent beast. He knows the way, I don’t need to hold his reins to guide him.”
I did not know that it was possible for my stomach to drop but it did as everywhere went blurry at his words. If I had anything in my stomach, it would be threatening to make a reappearance now but there was nothing there.
“Please, do not let go of the reins.” I begged in a tiny voice and he released a burst of laughter, the sound was rich full and uninhabited so much that it shocked me to turn and look at him the best I could.
“Don’t worry wife, I don’t plan on scaring you into old age, I plan on sharing your bed with you while you are still youthful,” Orel said as I snapped my eyes down and kept my mouth shut.
Saved or not, it doesn’t change the fact that I am going to be raped. For the rest of the journey, I was quiet, thinking about my fate and I think that Orel had noticed that my mind was in turmoil because he didn’t bother me with trying for a conversation which was surprisingly considerate of him.
Close to the settlement, Orel took his hands off Stormpacer reins and my heart jumped to my throat when the horse increased its speed and within minutes we were at the other end of the settlement.
I tried to keep my stomach from revolting but there was nothing I could do, it refused to settle, regardless of the fact that it was empty. As soon as Orel came down, I started moving restlessly on the horse and he was forced to remove me quickly from Stormpacer back, as soon as my feet landed, I wrenched myself out of his hold and fell on the ground to dry heave, as there was nothing more in my stomach.
“Orel” a voice boomed close to my left that had me jerking in shock. “Welcome back.” A large man with the voice said as he clasped hands with Orel then drew him into a back pat, between two of them, it looks more like punches to the back.
“It is good to be back Elison,” Orel said with his voice warm with happiness.
I must have made a sound because the large man's gaze turned to me as he eyed me with an ill-concealed interest, not a sexual interest but more of a strange little being.
“And who is this?” he asked as Orel grinned as he replied the man.
“My wife.”
“What do you mean your wife?” Elison asked his friend who seemed to have returned with a gentle-looking doe for a wife instead of a glorified nag and shrew who is never pleased with anything and cannot keep her mouth shut to save her life. “Have the stress of having such a shrew as betroth gotten to you?”
Orel released a smile at his friend's words, best friends since the cradle, the two of them were practically twins but from different parents. “I mean exactly that. The only woman whom I am required to spend my life with is in my tent calming her mind and wondering how she is not dead yet.”
“Where is she from and who is she, that she has the power to canceled out your arrangement with Lady Estrid without much controversy? Something you have been trying to do for the better part of a decade,” Elison asked as he pours some ale into a goblet for his friend.
“Oh there will be controversies but nothing we cannot handle, I don’t know where my bride is from or what is even her name, what I do know is that she was a maiden at the hunt,” Orel said as the goblet fell from Elison loose grip, splashing wine everywhere.
“Have you any idea what you have just done?” Elison thundered at Orel.
Orel calmly looked at his friend straight in the eyes and answered without any doubt in his voice. “Yes, I do”
Elison started to pace around the room ranting to himself in low tones, certain that his friend will be the doom of them all. “Of all foolhardy stunts for you to pull to try and get out of bad situations, this by far, is the most idiotic one that has ever graced your mind. Why will you be playing with the edict of fates in this way? The prophecy has been there for ages and it doesn’t speak of all things being good and wonderful, I don’t know why you are in such a rush to make it come to pass.”
“Eli.” Orel thundered as Elison paused in his pacing to glare at his friend. “I didn’t just do it to escape Estrid, I went to witness the hunt when she started pestering me about when the wedding will take place, then I saw her, her spirit was not broken yet she has accepted her fate, she was kneeling in front of men who were calling out taunts and offensive words yet she had the bearings of a queen. Why will I settle for a noblewoman when I could have the queen? She certainly cannot be worse than Estrid.” Orel grinned and when Elison looked ready to bash his head into his neck he continued.
“Something pushed me to join the hunt, Estrid thought that it was a way for me to release sexual tension since she has warned all women away from me unless they want to suffer for the rest of their lives. She was like a doe Elison , running without stopping or giving up, she outran all of us, including me, the only way I caught her was when her leg got tangled because of some roots and I had to keep her down with my weight lest she would have taken off again and eventually got away. She was going to be the first maiden in 400 years to get away, you know what that means, don’t you?” Orel asked Elison who was suddenly white as if he had seen a ghost.
“’If the white doe gets away, the Dar empire will fall. With her help, it will continue to thrive.’” Elison whispered under his breath, a small piece of the prophecy that foretold of the hardest times in Dar history.
Orel nodded grimly. “Somehow, my wife will save us all, we know what threatens to fall our empire.” He looked towards the direction of his tent, “Now we also know our salvation.”
***********************
By the time Orel returned to the tent where he had dropped me off, the thoughts running through my head has taken on the form of my worst nightmare, I kept thinking that he was going to kill me. I did not have the strength to pace around the room in my agitated state, not when I have not eaten a good meal in some days and the last time I ate was close to twenty four hours ago.
I was tried and weak and my eyes were sleepy but I did not dare to close them, not sure of where I will find myself when I do open them.
The tent flap opened as Orel came in only to pause when he saw that I was still awake. “You need anything?” He asked in his usual gruff tone and I shook my head. Watching him watch me.
“Why are you still awake then?” He asked as I wetted my lips before I could talk so that my voice will not come out unused.
I saw him watch the action then started to take off his clothes while I froze.
He must have seen my deer in headlights look because he chuckled and he shook his head at me. “I promise that I will not do anything to you, this evening.” He said as I nodded, with my expression still unsure.
I want to believe his words and in a way I do but I do not trust in him, not yet. When he saw my inner conflict, he sighed and he relieved me from it. “You have my word Themis.”
I nodded, believing that I can certainly hold a warrior to his words. I laid down to rest on the bed that felt like heaven and within minutes I was deeply sleeping.
I woke up to the scent of meat drifting towards my nostrils, I don’t remember the last time I had food, good food to eat, not something rotten.I slowly sat up, only for me to see the food on a small stool which was close to the bed. I took the plate and tore into it with a lack of finesse that would have been troubling to me if I had cared then but all I was concerned with was getting my fill.I choked on a piece of meat which got stuck in my throat from the way I tried to shove food into my stomach without properly chewing. I looked around desperately for something to ease my pain and my eyes landed on the cup on the stool, I quickly down the water inside and continued to eat but this time with more care and less hurry. When I was
When I came out of the tent after my bath the next morning as we prepared to leave, when Elison saw my hair, he nudge Orel then he looked at me too and frowned when he saw my hair.“The hair of the women in my family has always been silver, I dye the hair to avoid stares and I haven’t washed the hair since before the hunt so the dye was still there.” I explained, Orel nodded at my explanation.“That explains why the hair on your body are invisible to light, I could feel them but I could not see them” Orel said as my eyes widened at his words then narrowed into slits when he chuckled at the affronted look which was on my face. It must have been comical enough for him because he did not stop laughing at once. His chuckles died down
Side note: Please read and comment. It will help this story go far. Thank you. From what Orel told me on my way here I was suspecting Cale wife to be of questionable character and infuriating at worse, what I never suspected was that she was friends with the noble lady at the hunt, the one who was against Orel claiming me as his. There is some tension between Orel and the lady and as much as I try to remember what happened, my mind remain blank which I am sure was because of the shock I was experiencing then.Throughout the course of the meal, the two
I didn’t want to be anywhere near the noble women the next day but I didn’t have a choice, I needed to know the other wives of Orel fellow leaders, I just have to be present. That didn’t mean that I would be the joke of meeting, I will not show any weakness again, if the ladies think they will be able to degrade me today, they will be shocked at who they will see.I walked into the morning room where everybody was gathered and as soon as I entered, the room dissolved to muttering as I gritted my teeth and walked into the room with a smile on my face.“Pray do tell me what so funny, I cannot wait to see if I can share it with my warlord.” I said breezily, immediately the s
“The jewels on this blade is worth the exact amount you are bargaining for the blade, Orel.” Cale said heatedly as I rolled my eyes, they have been arguing back and forth since for a blade that caught Orel eye, it was small for him and although it was my size, I doubt it was for me. It was too fanciful for my taste. My eyes were on the small pair of thin like swords that will allow for throwing and at the same time for sword combats, I have been drawn to those blades since I set my sights on them, there was something about them that felt familiar, like they were meant to be mine.“Themis, you see anything you like.” Orel said behind me as I gave a little jump, I was so lost staring at the twin swords that I didn’t noticed that they have stopped their arguments since or from the way Lord Cale was staring at me, I
We got back to the settlement close to night, there was still enough light for Dyane to take her bath and wear a new dress, she was shocked when Orel chose the clothes for her instead of the jewelries and when she asked me why, I told her that it was because if Orel brought me another piece of jewelry again, I might be tempted to take his head off with my new pair of swords. When she was done bathing, her skin glisten in the candle light inside the tent. And I told her so “The color of your skin is amazing.” She shrugged bashfully.“It was better than this when I had my herbs with me.”“I would like to give you materials for your herbs but my husband is not too comfortable with you around medicine y
I froze then slowly turned to him. “A man is almost dead and time of the essence and you are asking me that?” My tone was incredulous.“Yes.” Orel replied while I glared at him but the glare did not work.“If you don’t answer me quickly, not only his life is at danger. As time goes by, I am threatened to ride into the capital and kill a lot of people because this is clear that the snake was sent by someone who hates me. It is too rare to be seen here. Those things only grow in one place and I assure you that the place is far from the Dar Empire.”“The person don’t have to hate you, the person just need to be against your bride…” I whispered softly as Orel snorted.“Any harm to you is a harm to me, everybody knows this. You are my wife, my weakest link. Only those who seriously despise another goes after his wife. The person who did this just became my greatest enemy.” Orel explained passionate
The messenger arrived in front of the merchant king home and refused to enter the house, requesting for the merchant king and when the merchant king arrived, the messenger then requested for his wife who came out too after much protest. The merchant king was confused about why the messenger didn’t want to enter his house but thought that he wanted to go back to the camp settlement as soon as possible, when his wife came out and he saw how pale she was. He started to suspect that something else was going on.“Warlady Themis, asked me to gift you this item, she wanted you to see it in your husband presence.” The messenger said as Lord Cale relaxed. It was just a gift. His wife was reluctant to open the package. “Be fast, I am sure that the messenger is in a hurry to leave, he would still be here to take your message of thanks back to the Warlady.” He snapped at his wife who slowly unwrapped the gift. What she saw made
“You have a pretty amazing life here.” Themis said as her eyes take everything around her while holding her babe close to her chest, I wondered what she saw and did not see, my sight and hers were different now. I saw the wonders and the mundane and none shocked me anymore.“You think.” I snorted as I rose from my throne seat which was slightly smaller than that of my husband, it was very comfy and a guilty pleasure of mine. Whenever I am on it, I don’t feel the insecurity that is crashing around me. “Enough talking, I haven’t seen my godson in a while, hand him over.”“And look, there she goes threatening me for my own son.” Themis jokes as I wrapped my arms around Themis in a hug. “I have missed you.” Themis confessed.“I knew it, I knew that you would miss the way I heap insults on you.” I teased with a laugh as I untangled myself and held Themis so
It’s been two weeks since I killed the king of Erisea, two weeks of Orel taking control of the empire and putting Dariths in top positions, now it is time to go home… it would not be long before I would welcome my son into the world, I want to do that in the capital even with Estrid there, it was still the second place I know as home and more convenient than the warrior plains of Dar where Orel mainly spend his time, it was also close to winter.According to Orel, we will spend winter in the capital as the wild fields of Dar was not the best place to raise a new born child. This he told me when he started to talk to me again, after shaking me so hard that my teeth clattered together and then refusing to talk to me. He and Gwenn spent many last night together sharing each other pain and grief. I hoped that it made them feel better but I wasn’t too sure if anybody would ever feel better after losing their friend who was a part of their soul.
Gwenn PovMy head felt like burst from the knowledge that was flashing through my head, the closer I got to the camp, my people were in. Hundreds and thousands of things, I never knew existed not to talk of need to learn ran through my mind and sank in my brain, most of them were powerful words… not spells. My brain provided me with the right word to use.“Are you okay mistress?” Sorens asked in worry behind me.I wanted to laugh, how do you define okay anymore? My life had stopped being okay a while ago when I was wedded into Northshore. My best friend died for me, my husband was probably on top of another lady at this moment, I just learnt that my new people were not demons but something close to, I had a war to fight and I could not even be left alone to mourn. I didn’t bother to try and answer Sorens question because it was clear that I was not okay. I got to the camp to meet the rest of the le
Gwenn PovThe camp was quiet, everybody was feeling the loss… not as much as the three of us. Themis, Orel and me. For a day now, we have done nothing but remain within Elison space, sitting among his things, not talking or moving around much. We didn’t care if we were in public or neither did we try to pretend to be strong for our warriors.“He always so patient with me, he taught me my first sword trick.” I said softly, the first one of us to break the silence, Orel turned to look at me with eyes that looked as if the soul have been sucked out of them.He was the first person to ever beat me in a bawl then he suggested that we should join the army together.” Orel added.“I cannot believe he is gone.” I voiced as I rubbed my palms on my shoulders like I was cold but I knew it wasn’t the cold, I was feeling the piercing loss of our friend and brother and I also knew that I would not accept comf
ELISON POVMistress of the whip, Gwenn is called, I am called something more practical, something which might not be related to torture techniques or brilliant fighting skills just like Gwenn and Orel dubbed titles but it was still important, it was still enough to be seen as special. The master huntsman is my title. Nothing can out run me, nothing can escape my clutches once I start my hunt. And now, this hunt has started, to save my sister life, a race against time… I pray to the gods, please don’t let anything happen to her, I am on my way…I am coming to take the death that is rightfully mine.********************************************DYANE POVHe left, even with knowledge that he would die, all to save those he considered as family, all to save his honorary sister. I might have just seen Elison alive for the last time. I quickly send a prayer to the gods, please prote
Orel PovEven with my mind on Themis, I didn’t have enough spare time to hunt her down until it was evening. When I found her, she was with Gwenn and Elison and from the looks of it, was solely distraught and begging Elison to agree to something, Elison, I noted was also looking pale and a little too taunt for my liking.“What’s going on here?” I asks as soon as I got close enough to hold my wife so she would not jump in shock as I approached them from the direction her back was turned to.“Apparently, I might leave you all soon.” Elison said with a wry grin on his lips but his eyes were hunted.“Don’t be silly, you are not going anywhere even if we have to tie you to keep you safe, I am sure that we can avert this.” Gwenn said in a brash tone as if she was taking on an unwilling candidate that would beat her and know this fact yet she is still charging into the battle with a war cry and weapon in her hands, w
GWENN POV“Why are you all doing this to me?” I scream as soon as I entered the camp where my so called warriors erected for themselves. Bodyguards, that’s what they are, they protect me among my friends but the moment when I step into the battle field they withdraw from me.“My Queen.” Sorens appears next to me. I would have been shocked about this before I left to help my husband but not anymore, not when I am just as fast as him and just as inhuman too, the speed which leave me the moment I also enter the battle field.“If I was your Queen you will obey my orders to help in the war.” I yelled at them not willing to let the tears pour from my eyes although it was getting hard.“You know that we cannot.” Sorens replies nervously… he was the most humane among them all, the rest were slowly appearing and looking on with me discussing with their commander with no expressio
“What do you mean that we are leaving?” I asked her husband sitting up from the bed where I was lying down since I woke up and had been feeling fatigued so I still laid down. Why on earth did I think that I could close my eyes to rest when I just finished telling Orel what has been going on? Of course I should have expected this, I should have expected to wake up to see that Orel has stirred the camp into a flurry of activities.“I mean exactly that Doe. We have to go after the Erisean but we would not use their route, we will take another.”“Does this mean that you have an idea where they are heading to?” I asks my husband as my cover cloth dipped down exposing my body to Orel who stopped in the middle of raising his shirt to stare at the skin I exposed not on purpose. “Orel, answer me.”My voice seemed to snap Orel out of whatever trance he was in. “Of course. I know where they are going, i
OREL POVThemis never left my side, all through my healing process she has been always near me, and whenever I was awake she always sang to me. I never had any doubt that she loves but if I did, they have been put to rest. I have been hearing tidbits about what went on during my captivity but nobody will tell me anything even when I threatened to have them whipped, Dyane’s answer to that particular threat of mine was to laugh and say that Themis will do something worse if she did tell me, according to what has been going on, Themis refused to tell me the state of the camp or things that happened in my absence because she wanted me to be well rested before I learnt of anything that happened. She told me this five days after I have arrived at the camp and for the next two weeks after, it was what was repeated to me by the maids who helped Dyane with healing, those that brought food even my commanders repeated the same thing to me when I asked them, it feels
