Chapter 8

Penulis: Light Breeze
Willow bumped into Jeffrey in the parking lot.

Jeffrey seemed surprised to see her. He thought for a short while before walking over toward her. His eyes were deep as he asked, "Are you really leaving Nebula?"

Willow hummed softly. "Yes. I'm leaving."

She threw the box into the boot of her car and closed it. Then, she turned around and said faintly, "Thanks for your help the other night."

Jeffrey looked closely at Willow's face. There was a faraway look in her eyes that concealed everything and revealed nothing. This was the Willow that he knew. Her fragile beauty that night had been nothing but a dream.

His eyes dimmed considerably. Then, he nodded with reservation. "It was nothing," he responded coldly.

Nonetheless, Jeffrey continued standing there as he watched Willow's car disappear out of the parking lot, seemingly in deep thought.

Willow finally arrived back at Grandview Manor around 8:00 pm later that evening. As soon as she got out of the car, she caught a whiff of osmanthus flowers in the breeze that welcomed her. It was quite a refreshing scent.

Blair came out to greet her and asked, "Mrs. Ziegler, will you be having dinner alone today? Or would you like to wait for Mr. Ziegler instead? The food is already all prepared. We'll just need to warm it up a little."

Willow thought about it for a moment. Then, she answered faintly, "There's no need to prepare my meals anymore from today onward."

Blair paled in shock. She wanted to ask why, but Willow had already walked through the manor and was heading straight upstairs.

It was brightly lit on the second floor. Willow slowed down as she fixed her gaze on the beautifully decorated corridor, She then took slow, heavy steps forward. Every step she took reminded her of Julian—their past, their experiences, their hardships, and the pain that he caused her.

"Julian, if you want power, then let me assist you.

"Julian, these hard times will soon pass, right?

"Julian! My stomach hurts… It hurts so bad…"

"We're sorry, Mrs. Ziegler, but after a close-up examination, we've found out that the chances of you getting pregnant are close to zero. Perhaps you'd like to consider adoption instead?"

It was just about 30 feet from one end to the other, but it felt as though Willow had re-lived her life all over again. The end of the corridor also felt like the end of her feelings for Julian.

The night breeze blew gently around her, making her face feel icy to the touch. She pushed open the door to the bedroom and flipped on the light switches, basking the whole room in a warm glow.

For the past four years, her life had revolved primarily around Julian. She had been with him as he seized power to stand at the top. Although Julian gained everything, Willow realized that she lost more and more of herself as time passed.

Luckily, she was finally going to be free from it all.

Willow walked into the walk-in wardrobe and brought out a few large suitcases before she began to pack. She packed the regular clothes she wore often, along with the pricey jewelry that she owned. She wasn't going to leave them behind for Julian.

After she was done packing, Willow got up and happened to glance up at the oil painting that was hanging on the wall.

She had painted it. It was a painting of Julian in his younger days. He looked young and full of life.

But there wasn't any love left between them anymore, which meant there was no need for this painting to exist anymore.

Willow found a tube of lipstick in her purse and began to scribble on the canvas with it. Bright streaks of red were dragged all over the painting, turning it gory and frightening to look at.

In a matter of seconds, the painting was completely disfigured. Julian's face had disappeared under the red streaks of lipstick.

However much love Willow had poured into the painting when she made it back then, she now replaced them all with an equal amount of hatred.

The oil painting wasn't the only thing that suffered her wrath. Even their wedding photos were also slashed to ribbons with a knife.

This was the end of their relationship. Just like their brightly smiling portraits that could never be pieced together again.

The knife dropped from Willow's fingers. Her arm just wouldn't stop shaking. She then fell to the ground and covered her eyes with her hands as tears pooled in them. She had wasted all of her youth. Everything tasted bitter, just like that night when she'd felt the excruciating pain in her belly.

Willow didn't even look back when she finally left.

The master bedroom felt empty without its mistress. The only thing left as a memento of her existence was the diamond ring on the bedside table, sparkling coldly in the darkness.

Blair couldn't stop Willow. The only thing she could do was watch helplessly as Willow left in her car and sped off into the night.

When Blair finally snapped out of it, she immediately called up Julian.

Julian was in the VIP ward at Everglow Hospital. He stood at the end of the corridor, close to the floor-to-ceiling windows, a tall and lonely figure as the night breeze fanned around his face.

He was on the phone with Blair, calling from the manor. She sounded anxious. "Sir, Mrs. Ziegler has just left."

A look of impatience appeared in Julian's eyes. "Where did she say she was going?"

He didn't think much about it. He just thought that Willow was perhaps in a shitty mood and had gone out to take a breather. Hadn't she just gone out drinking a few nights before?

Julian then chided Blair for blowing things out of proportion. Blair went silent for a while before finally speaking up. "She refused to say. She also brought with her half a dozen suitcases. We went upstairs to check and saw that she'd taken her clothes and jewelry.

"The bedroom's also been left in a mess. Mr. Ziegler, I think that you should hurry home as soon as possible to take a look!"

Julian felt his chest tighten. He gripped his phone a little harder as his mind began to wander.

It wasn't until a long while later that he finally hung up and hurried to the elevators. The lights shone on him as he walked past, casting a stern yet perfect shadow onto the ground. However, if one looked closely, one would see that the eyelashes were shaking.

By the time Julian rushed back to Grandview Manor, it was already late at night. He hurried upstairs to the second floor and pushed open the door that led to the master bedroom that he shared with Willow.

He'd only just opened it by a crack when he caught sight of the mess inside.

The wedding photos that used to hang on the wall above the bed now lay crumpled on the ground, its glass and frame smashed into a million pieces on the floor. The photo of them smiling happily at each other had also been slashed into shreds.

He walked farther into the walk-in wardrobe. The half that belonged to Willow looked as though it had just been cleaned out by a robber. The doors were wide open, with not a single clothing item in sight.

Her clothes and jewelry were all gone.

Even Willow's most beloved oil painting—the one she'd painted after begging him for the longest time after their wedding to be her model and muse, the one proof of the rare sweet moments they ever shared in their marriage—was utterly ruined.

Julian couldn't understand. Why did Willow keep distancing herself from him and arguing with him only after they'd finally made it to the top and had everything that they'd ever wanted?

Did she know just how many people were vying for her position as his wife?

Did she really not want any of that anymore?

He refused to believe it.

Julian stood amongst the shards of glass and called Willow's number. He thought that she was just pretending to run away from home so that he would acknowledge her presence. Unexpectedly, Willow picked up almost immediately.

He started interrogating her about the mess at home. He told her that if the media caught wind of the fuss she'd kicked up today, the public would start gossiping about them, and that would cause Nebula's share prices to drop.

He then ordered her to come home at once.

"There's a limit to everything you do, including kicking up fusses like this, Willow Harper! Think about the whole picture for once!"

The night was dark and silent, and Willow's calm voice could be heard from the other end of the line. "There won't be any sort of picture anymore, Julian Ziegler. I've already gotten someone to help me file for divorce. You'll be getting a court summons very soon."

Julian's Adam's apple bobbed. He took a long time to respond. "What do you mean?"

After a few seconds, Willow's cold voice was heard again. "Exactly what you think I mean. We are done, Julian Ziegler."

Then, she hung up on him.

Julian tried calling her back, but his calls wouldn't go through anymore. Instead, a robotic voice answered.

"I'm sorry, the person you have called is not available."

Julian stood rooted in his place for a very long time.

At the door, Blair cautiously approached him and said, "Ms. Burke called. She said she'd like to speak with you."

Julian could feel the veins in his head throbbing. He suddenly yelled back at her, "Tell her to fuck off!"

Willow was gone.

Willow didn't want him anymore. His Willow didn't want him anymore. She once promised him that she would be with him forever. She told him before that she would forever be by his side. She told him that she would never leave him.

Julian suppressed his anger as best as he could, breathing lowly and shallowly. Just then, he happened to catch sight of a yellowed piece of paper under the bed. It looked like it was from many years ago.

He frowned and wondered what it could be.

When he picked it up from the ground, he was instantaneously stunned when he finally had a proper look at it.

It was a test report from the Obstetrics and Gynecology hospital.

And Willow's name was on it.

Julian read and re-read every single word on the yellowed piece of paper, over and over again, until his eyes finally turned sore and bitter.Suddenly, he understood the pain that Willow had been through. He understood her tears. He finally understood why Willow had screamed at him in the parking lot, asking him why he wouldn't even spare her one minute of his time, and why he had changed so much. She couldn't give birth anymore. He didn't love her. However, Willow was someone very important to him. She had been with him for four years. She had been by his side when he was at his lowest, and she had also witnessed him achieving his greatest successes. They had agreed to have two children after they got married. One would be a boy named Landon Ziegler, and the other would be a girl named Evelyn Ziegler.Julian slowly sat down on the bed.His usual handsome features suddenly looked like they'd aged by a few years. He grabbed a cigarette from his pocket, lit it up, and took a huge

It was obvious that there was some hidden lust in Julian's eyes.Willow felt frustrated. She had had no intention of seeing him again. Jeffrey was supposed to handle everything about their divorce. She tried closing the door. However, Julian was faster and stopped the door with his foot. Then, he made his way through the front door easily. As soon as the door clicked shut, Willow was immediately enveloped in Julian's arms.Julian held her by her slim waist and kept pressing her against himself. Then, he started kissing her feverishly and desperately. Willow was completely unable to break free from his hold. So, they just continued kissing and struggling like that, eventually making their way to the living room couch. This was the first time Julian had ever behaved like this.Even the bright lights and Willow's gentle voice couldn't get Julian to snap out of it. It wasn't until he finally saw the reddish mole on her waist that he finally let up a little. He was breathing heavily

Willow figured that something had to be the matter about Julian. He must have just gotten dumped. However, he was going to be her ex-husband very soon, and she didn't think she had the right to ask about his private matters anymore. She had some self-awareness, after all.Since Willow wasn't able to shoo him out of her apartment, naturally, she didn't want to continue sitting around watching him smoke either. She just pulled her still-damp hair behind her head, twisted it up, and secured it in place with a hair claw before going into the kitchen to make herself some food.Willow wasn't a bad cook. It was just that she seldom had the chance to cook after she married Julian. But now that she was living on her own, she had to settle her three meals all by herself.A short while later, the heavenly aroma of pasta bolognese came wafting out from the kitchen.Julian was still sitting dazedly on the couch. From his position, he could see Willow's back turn to him as she cooked at the sto

Early the next morning, Willow was woken up by the garbage truck passing by her apartment building while blasting her favorite song "Strangers Again" to all the neighbors. The sun rays streamed in through the windows as the curtains danced gently in the early morning breeze. Julian wasn't next to her anymore.Last night, he never forced her into sex. However, he did keep waking up in the middle of the night repeatedly to kiss her every time.It felt as though he'd been holding it all in for a long, long time. Willow could even vaguely recall hearing Julian mention something about starting over while kissing the living daylights out of her. "Willow, let's start all over again."Start all over?Truth to be told, the three words sounded incredibly enticing to Willow. However, all the pain and suffering she'd gone through had given her plenty of trauma. Julian's expression had scared her enough at Veil Club the other night too. She was scared that everything would eventually tur

Willow couldn't help wondering how much Julian had to love Catherine for him not to care about rumors and gossip. She didn't want to watch them anymore and turned to leave. However, Catherine suddenly called out to her in a rather high-pitched voice. "Mrs. Ziegler."Willow turned around and fixed her gaze on the couple.Catherine seemingly tightened her arms around Julian's neck. She called out again in her supposed weak voice, "Mrs. Ziegler, there's absolutely nothing going on between Julian and myself! I was just feeling unwell. That's why he's carrying me."Without waiting for Willow to respond, Nancy then piped up in an overly polite voice, "You must be Julian's wife! Catherine and Julian are childhood friends, and Julian just takes care of her often. You don't mind, do you?"Willow looked at Julian.Julian didn't let go of Catherine. He just frowned a little.Meanwhile, Willow had no interest in playing the jealousy or possessive game. She was just disgusted by both Catheri

It was late at night when Willow finally drove home. She was about to undo her seatbelt after getting home when she suddenly caught sight of something.Julian had parked his car under the sycamore tree opposite her. He was dressed in all black as he puffed clouds of smoke into the air. His Adam's apple kept bobbing lightly, drawing her attention to it.As the smoke rose into the air, it framed his face for a slight moment before being blown away by the gentle night breeze. The night was dark and black, and his clothes blended right in. It was as if he was part of the darkness himself. When Julian caught sight of Willow, he frowned deeply at first. Then, he extinguished the cigarette and threw it to the ground, stomping out the embers before heading over toward her.Willow didn't want to talk to him, so she hurried into her apartment building toward the elevators while Julian's hurried footsteps could be heard following her.In the end, he managed to corner her against her own un

Willow didn't like Julian anymore. He just couldn't understand it. Since when had he lost Willow's love and adoration?…Three days later, in Julian's office at Nebula Group, it was obvious that he was in quite a terrible mood. There were a bunch of court summons on his office desk. Willow was the prosecutor. She wanted the court to grant her a divorce and to split up their common marriage properties and assets.Julian leaned back on his couch, one leg crossed over the other, as he held the summons in his hand. He then asked Esther, standing next to him, "Has she contacted a lawyer?"Esther answered truthfully. "She hired Mr. Zachary Lawless, the most famous and capable divorce lawyer in the field. If he agrees to take her up on her case, I'm afraid that Mr. Gibson won't be able to win the case for you."Julian glanced at her and said softly, "Who said I was going to court with Willow? That's just her wish. I do not plan on getting a divorce with her."Esther was stunned. "What?

Jeffrey was dressed very formally. He wore a navy blue shirt with a black suit jacket draped over his shoulder. To complete his look, a black tie was strapped around his neck. Put together, he looked sharp and refined, yet exuded an air of restrained allure. He gazed at Willow with a faint smile. "Can I sit and have a coffee with you?"After a brief pause, Willow returned the smile lightly. "Of course."Jeffrey set his briefcase down and sat down. Very quickly, a waiter approached and politely asked, "What kind of coffee would you like, sir?""Blue Mountain," he replied with a tap of his finger. The waiter nodded and left.He sank back into his chair and habitually reached for a cigarette. Remembering where he was, he frowned and abandoned the idea. He tucked the cigarette away and turned his attention back to Willow. They hadn't seen each other for a while, and it seemed she had changed quite a bit.She wore a fawn-colored woolen dress that outlined her slender, graceful figu

The snow in Brindley had finally melted. That morning, a convoy of a dozen black cars escorted Willow and Grace back to the Chapman residence. Years ago, this was how Julian had married Willow. And today, this was how he was sending Willow home, just like how Grace had insisted. No matter how it ended, he and Willow married each other legally. The polished black cars entered the Chapman residence one after another and slowly came to a stop.Inside the dimly lit car, Julian turned his head to look at Willow. He didn't say a word, but simply reached out to gently place his hand on her stomach, feeling the child inside of her. After a while, he grabbed her hand and held it gently. No matter how reluctant he was to let go, he had to. He had promised Grace to set Willow free.Grace had brought Willow home.Timothy and Heather had been waiting outside for a while. When Willow stepped out of the car, Heather, with tears brimming in her eyes, pulled Willow into a tight embrace. She r

"Julian, you're not even 30 yet. You still have plenty of chances to have children of your own. I'm begging you, for the child's sake, please let her go."Willow isn't that weak. She can still write and see. She'll raise the child to be well-mannered and capable. Just let her come home. I promise you'll still get to see the child."Grace said a lot, and Julian just listened quietly until the very end.He neither agreed nor disagreed. He took the tiny pair of shoes from Grace's hands. They were for Landon. The shoes were sky blue and adorable. The soles felt comfortable to touch.Grace showed a kind smile and said, "I know you care about Willow. If it's meant to be, life will find a way to bring you back together. Otherwise, when you have another child someday, I'll sew them a pair of shoes too."Julian choked up. "Grandma."Grace reached out and patted his arm gently. "I know you're a good boy. Just send her back the way you brought her into the Ziegler residence back then. Her

The night was quiet and serene.Julian stood alone in his study, staring out at the endless snow outside. His mind kept replaying the scene of Willow's distorted speech, as well as her tear-streaked face that was filled with despair.Willow herself must've found it unbearable!Julian looked at the night sky, his gaze unreadable. He realized that he seemed to never have truly made Willow happy. All he ever did was hurt her, disappoint her, and make her cry. This wasn't how loving someone was supposed to be.The next morning, Julian didn't appear in her room.Willow washed up on her own. Even if she barely had an appetite, she still walked out to find something to eat for the sake of the baby she carried. As she opened the bedroom door, she froze.Grace was standing outside the door, holding a basket in one hand and Snowy in the other. She stared at Willow with her gentle, loving eyes.Willow stood there in a daze before her lips trembled. In a broken, trembling voice, she cal

The pregnancy hadn't made Willow's body bigger. She was still slender with her dark hair cascading down her shoulders. The hot water streamed down along her shoulder blades, trailing down to the small dip of her waist. There, a small reddish mole stood out."Let me help you."Julian grabbed her by the shoulders, wanting to help her bathe.Willow was startled, so she instinctively slapped him across the face. After striking him, she pressed herself against the warm ceramic tiles, her lips trembling as she stared at him. Since she couldn't hear him, she didn't know what Julian's intentions were. She was afraid that he was trying to initiate sex with her. After all, it had been quite some time since he had last done it.Julian's handsome face was turned to the side. It was quite embarrassing. After a while, he let out a self-deprecating smile and began writing on the palm of her hand.Only then did she understand that he was offering to help her bathe. She refused, but how coul

Willow was forced to stay here, subjected to Julian's arrangements. Every day, she simply sat there in a daze. After a while, she couldn't help but think that it wasn't just her who was sick. Julian was sick too.In fact, they were both sick.At the villa, everything seemed peaceful, as if it weren't affected by the outside world. But outside, things were an absolute mess.About half a month later, Liam somehow caught wind of what was going on and showed up at the villa. In the study on the second floor, the faint scent of tea lingered in the air. It was Earl Grey, Liam's favorite. But right now, Liam wasn't in the mood for tea. He pointed angrily at Julian and roared, "Send her back immediately!"You can't just take someone's daughter away like this after just leaving just a message. How am I supposed to explain to Timothy and Heather? That's their biological daughter!"The crystal chandelier sparkled, casting its light on Julian's expressionless face. "Dad, Willow is my wife.

Late at night, in the Chapman residence, the moonlight shone through the white curtains, spilling onto the ivory white bed, wrapping the woman's body in a robe made of moonlight.Willow was sound asleep.Suddenly, a tall figure stepped into the room, bathed in the moonlight. He approached the bed gently and crouched down next to it.Since Willow couldn't hear a thing, she was unaware.Julian knelt before her, listening to her shallow breathing while staring at her pale face. After suppressing the urge for so long, he finally raised his hand and stroked her fragile features. If he could turn back time, that night, he would never have returned to Brindley. He would've stayed by Willow's side, not letting her be gripped by fear in the middle of the night.Every time Julian closed his eyes, he would recall the way Willow spoke. When he remembered how her voice was distorted, it tore him apart inside."I'm sorry! Willow, I'm so sorry!"Julian's voice trembled, his eyes glistening wi

Julian turned to Alicia and asked softly, "Isn't this enough? Alicia, what else do you want?"Originally, he could have been happy.Willow and the child would have stayed by his side, surrounded by happiness. Even if he was burdened with countless sins, he could've had the chance to grasp happiness. But now, that was gone. After Alicia's repeated acts of self-harm and unreasonable demands, his patience had finally run dry. In the end, he and Willow had finally reached this point of no return.Julian's voice was low and hoarse. "Alicia, we're done."He turned around and walked away, ignoring Alicia's cries behind him. She fell to the ground in tears. "Julian… Julian…"But he never looked back. The team of specialists remained helpless when it came to Willow's condition. They were simply too late. This type of neurological disorder, triggered by the weather and atmospheric pressure, was extremely rare. There was no effective treatment at present. Moreover, Willow was pregnant,

Julian's face was ghastly pale.Annie stepped forward with a grim expression, her voice colder than ever."Let me tell you what happened! After you rushed back to Brindley to comfort Alicia, Ms. Harper lost her hearing due to barotrauma. The snowstorm that night in Padstow was so severe that everywhere was covered in thick snow."We couldn't get a ride anywhere. Back then, I naively believed that you were in the hotel. I thought if I asked you for help, you'd certainly figure something out."After all, you've always been so capable, haven't you? However, you were back at Brindley."I had no choice but to call Mr. Chapman. Mr. Chapman and Mrs. Chapman immediately rushed to Padstow in the middle of the night."Mr. Chapman, a man in his 50s, carried Ms. Harper in his arms for half an hour through the snow, which was about 20 inches deep, to get to the helicopter."When they arrived at the hospital, his clothes were soaked through. Mrs. Chapman's legs were completely numb, and she c

Willow couldn't hear anything anymore. Her world had fallen completely silent. But Julian didn't know that. The snow in Padstow had finally stopped.Heather gently cupped Willow's face, her voice choked with sobs. "I'll take you back to Brindley for treatment! They have the best doctors there. We'll definitely find a way to cure this."Willow tried to comfort her. "Mom, I'm fine."The words were simple, but because she couldn't hear, her voice came out slightly distorted.Heather almost broke down right then and there, but she held it together. As a mother, she had to be strong for moments like this. That very day, Timothy and Heather brought Willow back to Brindley.Timothy had already made arrangements with top-notch specialists to consult on Willow's condition. They couldn't afford to waste any time. As long as there was the slightest chance, they wouldn't give up.At 2:00 pm, the Chapman family's black car entered the hospital.Ahead of them, a small crowd had gathered,
