Chapter Five

KIRA'S POV

When we got to the hospital, I ran in, forgetting he was oblivious of where I was headed. It was already 11pm, and my stubborn mother was yet to take her medications which could cause more havoc to her health.

"Just tell me you have eaten." I said as I stormed into her ward.

"Now, there she is." She said, full of excitement, though she looked quite pale.

"Thank God you're here. Now please handle her." Nurse Kate said with a swoon, leaving my mom to me.

"Why do you keep doing this? You think it's fair to me?" I said now sobbing. I knew she was doing this out of love, but I couldn't stand it if her show of affection was detrimental to her health.

"You know if anything happens to you I'll blame myself for life."

"Don't talk like that. Okay I'm sorry. I was just so worried about you." She said with a smile, wiping off my trickling tears.

We ate the hospital food together, and i watched Nurse Kate administer her drugs and injection to her.

"Umm.. Kira, can I talk to you for a bit." Nurse Kate said.

"Sure."

"What do you wish to say to her that can't be said before me." Mom asked giving the nurse a suspicious glare.

"Mom, it's fine. I'll be back shortly." I said and led Nurse Kate out.

"Kira, I understand you are doing your best, to raise the bill for her surgery, but time is really not on her side. She's been taking these drugs just to suppress the pain and discomfort. Unfortunately, her body is really getting tired of them." I could tell she was hurt as she spoke.

"Thanks Kate. I know and I'm grateful for all you've done for my mom. I just got a better job, but it's not been up to a month, hence I have nothing on me. I'll raise the balance of the bill by month end."

"Really? Month end? That's not possible Kira and you know that. You've only paid eight hundred thousand, with one million still pending. How do you plan on raising that sum in a month?"

"I really don't not. But I will save my mom any way." I said with a sigh.

"You know what, I have some savings I can help out with. It's not much, but I guess it will go a long way." Kate said hastily squeezing a crumpled cheque in my hand.

"No Kate. I won't let you give up your savings. Please I can't accept this." I said handing it back to her. She was about to say something when a hand took the cheque from me.

"Ma'am, you really don't have to." My boss said

"Shoot! I forgot all about him!" I thought slapping my hand on my forehead.

"Sir.."

"You sure are a nice person, but please, take it back." He said placing the cheque on Kate's palm. Bewildered Kate looked at the young man and then at the cheque now on her palm.

"Who are you?" She asked finally finding her voice.

"Oh please forgive me. I must have startled you. My name is Damian.."

"He's my boss." I said, trying to avoid any drama as I knew Kate well enough to know she'll go search his name on the net.

"I see.." She muttered looking at him from head to toe.

"Kate, thanks again but I'll see you later. " I said and she got the message, leaving us alone.

"So why didn't you tell me about your mom's condition?" He asked.

"What? Has he gone bunkers? Why would I tell him ?Not like he's my boyfriend." I thought.

He suddenly snapped his fingers.

"What are you contemplating on?" He asked with a raised brow

"Nothing.. I was just pondering on the question you asked. There's no reason for me to tell my boss about my personal life..Sir.." I said still trying to be polite.

"I see.. But I guess you don't respect me as your boss." He said feigning annoyance.

"What do you mean Sir?"

" Exactly what I mean. I have told you to stop calling me Sir, anytime we are alone, or in a private setting. You call me Damian." He said giving a sly smile.

"But.. that's a bit off. Be it at the office or outside the office, you still remain my boss." I said trying to break free from his deep and alluring gaze as it was putting me in a daze.

Like the speed of light, he suddenly pulled me by the waist, to his chest with one arm and the other in his pocket.

"The Hell!" I thought, with my eyes almost popping out of their sockets.

"I want to be more than just your boss" He whispered into my ear, making me shiver.

"What..what do you mean?" I stuttered still in his arms. We were so close that I could feel his warm breath on my forehead.

"You'll surely understand when the time is right." He said , making me lift my head to look at him. My eyes met his beautiful grey eyes, and he smiled at me. My knees suddenly grew weak. But for his strong arm on my waist, I could have fallen on the hard floor.

"Are you okay?" He asked, looking a bit confused

"You are what is wrong with me" I wished to say.

"Yeah.. I am good." I said trying to keep a straight face .

"So to the issue at hand, what exactly is wrong with her? I mean your mom." .

"The meds call it Inguinal hernia." I said trying in vain to hold back the tears about to drop on my cheeks. I quickly cleaned them with the hanky in my hand. It was then I realized I had since held on to his kerchief all this while.

"I.. I'll wash this and return it to you tomorrow." I said sniffing in a snot. He said nothing but nodded with a smile on his well carved lips.

"How can he smile when he has a crying lady right in front of him?" I thought feeling a bit disgusted.

"So let's make a deal. I'll pay what is left of the bill." He said

"Whoa!" I screamed with a sudden feeling of giddiness.

"No. You won't sir. I'll handle it. She's my mom, making her my responsibility." I said shaking my head vigorously.

He soon began laughing. That, I have never seen him do. Well, not as much as he was doing right now.

" Okay, Let's see it like this. It is also your responsibility to ensure that you don't ruin any means of help open for your mom isn't it?" He asked with a sort of cunningness.

"Is he trying the mind game with me?" I thought, not giving him an answer.

"See, if you stop me from helping her out, then you'll be doing just that." I decided to give in, not because I was bought over by his baseless pun game, but because this was actually my best bet. The person I thought of borrowing from was well known for asking for an outrageous interest any time he gave out a loan.

"Okay sir. I'll accept it . Thank you so much." I said feeling teary again.

"It's fine." He said, with a smile.

Then, it suddenly dawned on me that a business mogul like Damian won't put in money where there was no profit. Something like this to him, should be an investment.
