"I knew how to have some fun. Why do you always think that I only knew how to stay in my room?"
"Because that's who you are. If we did listen to your excuses, you wouldn't be here."
“You’re talking as if you have no idea that I can easily get tired," he said lazily finishing the last piece of cheesecake in his hand. He even licked his finger to remove the cheese left on it.
"Yeah, yeah. Fine. I’ll stop," Noah gave up talking to him, raising his left hand to stop the words he had not said yet. "What's Vivian taking so long?"
As if on cue, Vivian appeared in front of the family mart, running away from where was the comfort room. Her cerulean dress and long black hair swayed to the wind in her every step. She was holding her wide hat so that it wouldn’t fly away on its own.
Yric had been friends with them since their freshman year in college. They're still friends after three years which Yric didn't believe would happen. Yric was a loner who didn't like talking to anybody. He’s way too different from the two since his friends like to go out a lot to have some fun. But somehow, he ended up being friends with the two when he needed to find members for group study.
The two were already friends when he meet them. As far as he knew, Noah and Vivian have known each other since they were kids. Because of their friendship, sometimes he thought he didn't belong with them and they only befriended him out of pity. He was just a cloud of small dust that had no value. They could easily forget him when they wanted to.
The moment Yric's eyes connected to Vivian's eyes filled with fear, he and Noah both stood up quickly. They skittered going out of the mart with their drinks in their hands. Vivian also ran toward them putting down her shaking hand.
"What's happened to you?" he asked worriedly.
Vivian stood between them racing with her breath. "I can't---"
"Calm down," Noah said cutting off what's Vivian going to say. "Take a deep breath first. Relax."
Noah even raised his hands and put them down afterward. Vivian did follow, taking a deep breath. Now that she was calming down, she could finally speak clearly. Her expression still mimed the intensity of fear. "The man wanted to touch me. I thought he was just looking at me weirdly. But he had something bad going on in his head. He tried hurting me," Vivian told them as her breath was getting even.
Yric looked at his guy friend because of what he heard.
"There's something with that man. Let's go to the bus now," he said to them with his voice shaking a little.
Noah's forehead furrowed. He couldn't believe what he had just heard from Yric.
"What do you mean by that?" Noah asked him full of urgency.
"I was looking at the man earlier not because I wanted to help him. I just thought he was not with himself."
The two friends looked at him with questions written all over their faces. "We both know you can see things others can't. But don't scare us," Noah said bravely. "Maybe he just wanted to ask for help. That's why he tried holding Vivian. He's just sick," he added to convince himself that Yric was wrong.
"I hope so," Yric said silently.
"Let's just go back to the bus!" Vivian blurted out. "Forgetting the man is the best way."
Vivian led the way into the waiting bus. On other hand, Noah let out a deep breath before following. Yric was left alone standing, looking at the side of the family mart where the two doors going to the comfort room were. He didn't move to where he was standing for a couple of minutes while his two friends walked straight without bothering to check if he was on their back.
Noah only turned when they reached the door of the bus. He was surprised when he didn't see Yric. He looked away and found him still standing in front of the family mart.
"Yric! What are you doing?!" Noah shouted so that Yric could hear him. He stopped at the door while Vivian continued walking inside the bus.
Removing his gaze from the comfort room, Yric looked at his friend and walked into the bus in big strides. As he was near the door, he turned his head again toward the comfort room. He knew that the man was taking so long inside. Noah conjured a scowl of displeasure.
"Fine. I'll stop," he said to his friend as he climbed up the door to remove Noah's annoyance.
Noah tapped his shoulder again as he followed on his back. "You're just thinking too much," he assured him.
Yric moved his head as an act of agreement. He moved quickly in between the rows of chairs until he reached his seat on the left side of the bus. Vivian was already sitting in the middle removing her wide hat. She let out the powder from her pink purse and started retouching her face. He slipped through the chair passing his friend. He sat on the farthest seat next to the glass window. He even tried looking at the comfort room. But he couldn’t see it from where he was sitting.
Sighing deeply, he quietly sat and waited for the bus to move. He transferred her attention to his friends because they were starting to bicker again which wasn't new to him. Whenever the two were together they were always fighting. He could only have a peaceful day when the two both chose to stay quiet.
"Why are you putting on your makeup?" Noah commented as Vivian was using a thin brush on her face. Her other hand was holding a rectangular makeup kit.
"I just want to," Vivian replied. "What is it to you?"
"Just you know, we're going to an island for a festival, not a party. You don't have to doll up. It's not needed. People there wouldn't want to see your face. It will be covered in a mask."
Vivian glanced at Noah, miming disbelief. She didn't let him say something more by hitting him hard on his arm. Noah moved back a little brushing his arm, pain was drawn to his face. Vivian closed the rectangular palette and closed her eyes after putting earphones on her ear.
"It's better to get some sleep," she said to the both of them, closing her eyes with long lashes while leaning her head. She even hugged her purse on her lap. "Wake me up when we get there."
Removing his hand on his arm, Noah sat properly on his seat. He also leaned his head as he closed his tired eyes. Noah didn't get a lot of sleep because of playing computer games all night.
Yric just watched the two and let them sleep. Then he gazed outside the bus looking up to the sky stained in red-orange because of the setting sun. He even saw from afar the flock of birds flying toward the east. Though his eyes remained serious, he wasn't admiring the scenery. There was nothing else for him to look to feel alive. For a long moment, he stared at the sky. It made him look back to the years that passed him by. He thought going to school and having friends would put color to his life.
Unfortunately, he got it all wrong. No matter how hard he tried to find a reason to live peacefully, he couldn’t find one. If it stayed like that he had to go back. He couldn't look at things with a smile on his face like his friends do. He could only fake a laugh and a smile when needed. He's still left broken and empty. He knew all along what's his fate ever since he was born. It was the main reason why he run away since he couldn’t accept it. Wondering why didn't help him at al. No one could answer what he was feeling. Even he didn’t know what was needed for him the find the meaning he yearned for all these years.
He only removed his eyes from the sky when he saw the man walking to the green bus. The man's face was wet, he didn't bother drying it using tissue paper.
Yric stared blankly at the man following his every step. He already expected that the man would ride the bus that's why when the man climbed up to the door he wasn’t confused. But he panicked a little since the man didn't just ride the bus. The man walked toward the back even though there were empty seats at the front. As the man passed to where they were sitting, the man couldn't help to glance at him. Their eyes met for a moment. The man's eyes grew big just by looking at him and skittered to the back dodging his stare.
The man sat alone at the back, both hands hugging his arms. Yric couldn't help to stand. He didn't stop himself from checking the man. Luckily, the man was also trying to sleep. The man didn't see him looking as he had closed his eyes. Yric went back to his seat afterward releasing a deep breath to calm his nerve. He’s feeling heavy like something bad was going to happen that would test his patience.
THE SKY grew dark in no time. Fortunately, nothing happened while the bus was on its way to the cable-stayed bridge that would take them to the island. Yric thought everything was at peace that's why he sat comfortably leaning on his head. But he got it all wrong. The bus needed to stop when it arrived in the very middle of the high bridge. A lot of cars were stuck because of an accident near the opposite end. Below the bridge was the wide lake. The water couldn't be seen because of the thick mist covering it. The wheels under the bus squeaked as it stopped waking up his two friends.
"Did we arrive already?" Vivian asked opening up her eyes. She even brushed her eyes to remove the remaining sleep.
Noah, on the other hand, stretched his hand going upward while yawning widely. His uvula was showing.
"No. Not yet," Yric answered simply.
Vivian glanced at him, astonishment was drawn to her face. "Why did we stop then?" she stated.
"I don't know. There might be an accident ahead of us," he guessed standing from his seat. "I'll check if I am right."
He made his way between the seats carefully not to bump his two friend’s knees. Glancing at the back of the bus, he took out his black backpack from the compartment above them. His forehead furrowed because the man was no longer there. He was filled with wonder because he didn't notice when the man went down. No matter how hard he thought for an answer about where the man was, he wouldn’t find any.
Brushing the image of the man inside his head, he went on leaving his friends in their seats. Some of the passengers also moved from their seats to check out what was happening. He had to wait for them before he could walk out of the door. When it was time for him to go down, his two friends followed him running inside the bus. They made a lot of noise. The driver shot his friends with an angry look but the two ignored it. Noah pushed his back lightly and he finally went down the door as the last passenger walked onto the bridge.
Standing on the hard cement, he looked far away together with his friends to the other end of the bridge. But they still couldn't see the accident.
"How long we're going to wait?" Noah complained removing his gaze from the length of the bridge. "We're going to be late. We can't see the parade if we're stuck in here."
"Don't worry. We can," Yric assured him.
Noah looked at him, miming tiredness. "How'd you know?"
"It's still early," he reminded Noah.
Because of what he said, his friend checked the time on his wrist. "You're right," Noah agreed with him. A simple smile appeared on his lips.
Their friend Vivian walked away from them, going toward the high railing. She looked down below the bridge, to the mist covering the water.
"This is so high," she exclaimed. She grasped the cold bar of the railing to hold herself.
While Vivian's attention was glued under the bridge, Noah sneaked on her back and scared her by shouting at her loudly. The girl shrieked out of surprise and punched Noah's arm. To save himself, Noah ran away from her, hiding on Yric's back. Yric ignored the two because he saw someone standing at the tip of the tower. But as he fixed his eyes up there he saw no one.
Vivian noticed him looking up. She stopped chasing Noah and put her attention on him. "What's wrong? What are you looking at?" she stated.
"I just thought someone was standing at the tip." He put down his gaze.
"How can a person stand there?" Vivian mumbled. "Just think of it. It's pretty impossible. You're just imagining things. Or your eyes are playing a trick with you."
"You are right," Yric agreed without any emotion in his voice. It was better not to insist on what he saw to avoid an argument between them. He needed to control himself not to get mad.
"Who wants to go with me?" Noah stated as he moved away from Yric's back. "I am going ahead to check."
"I'll go with you," Vivian stated leading the way.
Yric just looked at his friends. "I will stay here," he told them.
"Are you sure?" Noah asked. "
He answered him by moving his head. "Be careful. You'll never know what's going to happen," he reminded his friend.
"We'll be fine. Don't worry." Noah raised his hand at him as he chased Vivian.
Taking a deep breath, Yric didn't remove his eyes at the back of the two as they walked away. His friends made their way between cars as if they were just taking a stroll. Putting his hand inside the pocket of his sweater, he averted his eyes from his friends and looked up again to the tip of the tower. He still saw nothing that's why he chose to move closer to the railing.
For a moment, he looked down under the bridge and stopped when he felt someone was looking at his back. His face conjured up a scowl of displeasure. He turned his body only to find the man standing at the end of the bus. The man's eyes were fixed at him which made him stop moving. The man mouthed something that he barely understands. Even though his nerve wasn't calming down, he still decided to walk closer to the man. He put several between each other.
"What do you want?" he carefully asked while guarding himself in case the man would try hurting him.
THE MAN looked at Yric straightly, he was holding the edge of the bus for support. His hands were shaking because of fear. He hesitated for a moment but still choose to speak. Bruises were visible on his skin. Dark rings circled his both weary brown almond eyes."I need your help," the man said in a shaky voice before looking away from him. He turned his head from left to right searching for someone.Out of curiosity, Yric glanced in the direction where the man was looking. But he didn't see anything weird. People were just waiting for the road to be cleared. He returned his attention to the man after a second. In a low voice, he said, "How can I help you? If I can, how can I be sure that you wouldn't harm me?" "I'll do whatever you want. Just let me live," the man responded instead of answering his questions. His forehead furrowed, miming a hint of confusion. "I don't know to help you though," he said matter-of-factly. "I am not sure who you are." He eyed the man more closely to stud
THE RIDE got a little bumpy going up to the town because the truck was pretty old. It jumped every time it ran on an uneven road. Yric with his friends held tightly to the side of the truck as they all sat on its back not to get hurt. His hands had gone numb. The street would be quiet if not only for the rumbling sound of the truck. There wasn't a single soul walking outside. Xurden's face still clung to his head from the moment they left the bridge. He couldn't stop thinking about the man as he looked far away. He didn't have a single idea who Xurden was. But he knew Xurden wasn't a normal human being. He shivered at the thought that Xurden was staring at him from afar.As the truck was near the center of the town, Noah started to notice the calmness engulfing the town. He even moved his head from left the right to observe the surroundings. The houses looked liked abandoned with only a few lights on. Questions aroused on Yric but he couldn't ask the old man driving the truck who wa
YRIC had a peaceful sleep which rarely happens to him. His mind was blank and not clouded by nightmares. At first, he just closed his eyes to give it a rest. But ended up in a deep slumber. It didn’t last though because something unexpected happened while his eyes were closed. The glass door going to the balcony opened up on its own. The cold wind blew hard slipping through the doorway, making the off-white curtain covering the glasses sway. He shivered to the cold waking him up. As he opened his eyes, he was greeted by the presence of a man wearing a dark suit. He was creped out with Xurden standing on the side of the sofa looking down at him intently.Without knowing what Xurden was doing there in their room, Yric immediately sat up and crawled to the sofa. He didn't have the chance to run when Xurden wrung his sweater raising him. His feet were a couple of inches high from the floor. Xurden's grip was forceful hurting Yric's neck."Put me down," Yric begged in a shaky voice. He tri
THE QUIETNESS in the room was deafening. No single noise could be heard. But Xurden wasn't bothered even a little. He was just sitting on a chair at the back of a table looking far away outside the opened door of the balcony. The light coming from the lampshade was dim. Yric's image was still clinging inside his head. The longer he thought of the guy, his forehead furrowed. He kept on wondering who Yric was because he felt different toward him. His train of thought was only cut off when the door of the room opened up. Sebastian walked inside holding a cup in his right hand. Xurden didn't look at his assistant as Sebastian step closer to where he was."Why do you need to be so hard on that guy, Boss?" Sebastian asked him carefully putting down the cup on the table. The cup clung a little to the small plate ringing in his ear. "Maybe his ability is just sleeping. You know it can happen. People like him can resist spells and curses. It might be the reason why your hypnotization didn't wo
THE SPICES sipped on his tongue as he eat the noodles. He went to the restaurant together with his two friends for their late dinner. They were the only customers during that time. The sound of their slurping could be heard clearly from the whole restaurant since it was quiet. It was accompanied by clanging utensils. Noah even gasped for air while fanning his mouth with his right hand. He couldn't handle the spiciness even though he chose the lowest level. Vivian on the other hand was eating carefully the regular noodles not to spill the soup on her shirt. She still made little noises no matter how hard she controlled it. Yric had no problem with his fiery noodles, he kept on biting the thin noodles and slurped the soup once every second. He didn't bother wiping the sweat on his forehead. After a moment, Vivian said something that made him stop eating the noodles."Did someone go to our room earlier?" Vivian asked while wiping the side of her lips with the white tissue paper. Putting
THEY STOPPED walking when they reached the side of the street where a lot of people gathered. Noah made his way in between without saying anything to them. Vivian looked at Yric puzzled, and he just raised his shoulder since he didn’t have the slightest idea what Noah was planning. The girl turned her head at their friend before she could no longer see him as he slipped deeper going to the stage. Everyone was looking at a small stage built in front of the restaurant where they ate the night before.“Get back here Noah. What are you doing?” Vivian exclaimed. Annoyance was drawn to her face.Noah heard her but he didn’t look back at them. “Let’s watch. This will be fun,” he said loudly.“He can get distracted easily.” Vivian glanced at him. “Do you want to go? Or we’ll go ahead? He would run when he found out we were gone.”“It’s okay. We can check it out,” Yric spoke without any hint of displeasure towards his friends for changing plans without discussing it with them. Noah insisted th
THE DAY became hotter, making Yric sweat a lot. He wasn’t complaining, even though he was wearing a thick sweater. The heat would never end. But a lot of townsfolk still gathered. Wiping the sweat on his forehead, he gazed at the wide-open area in front of him. People were preparing for the parade to start, wearing their masks in distinct colors and shapes. In the very middle of the ground, bulky half-naked men carried drums attached to their hips. Their hands moved in unison. They made loud thumping sounds, filling the air while a group of women sings with their hearts out. The women wore white long dresses touching the grass. The bands looked like a cult in his eyes, which creeps him out. But he still looked at them without moving where he was standing. He ignored the lingering feeling on the back of his neck. His two friends checked the stalls near the old two-story building. He didn’t go with his friends since he felt tired all over his body. The land where the start of the parad
THE FALLING leaves lasted for a couple of seconds. Yric couldn’t help to raise his head. Most of the dried leaves flew just right on his face. He even caught one in his hand and stared at it for a moment. But the leaf didn’t stay longer on his palm. The wind blew again, carrying the leaf before it finally fell on the ground covered in dried leaves. He only turned his head to the man when Xurden started talking to him.“Did you forget what you’ve said to me?” Xurden asked him with no emotion in his voice. “You don’t want me around. Then why are you here?”Sebastian tried to open his mouth. But Xurden shot him an angry look, making the assistant stop before he could say anything. Xurden glanced back at Yric and waited for Yric to speak.Yric took a deep breath to calm himself. His heart was beating fast because of fear. He hesitated for a while. He had guessed Xurden’s answer to the favor he was going to ask.“I need your help,” Yric finally said, gathering the courage left in him. “My
A salty wind blew from his left, whistling through the houses lining that one side of the beach. By late afternoon, that wind would breathe cool air, carrying with it the stench of the mudflats. The waves had already calmed down, giving this serene feeling aligned to the horizon. From where he was sitting, on the balcony of his two-story house, he could see everything that was happening in the white sand. There was a group of men drinking under the shade of the umbrella. Next to those men was a family sitting on the soft sand with no mats under them. Aside from those people close to his house, other humans scattered along the beach, going on with their life while seagulls cried in the air just above. It wasn’t out of the ordinary that many people flocked to the beach, admiring the solemnity and beauty. The month of December brought a lot of visitors to different places. He was now used to it, seeing people ever since Yric died, and that sorrowful day happened four years ago. He adjust
He touched his head violently to deny the reality. His mind had stopped working. He couldn’t think of anything else other than the fading body of Yric. They both expected that there would be death. What he didn’t predict was the outcome of his fight with the deity.Once again, he questioned himself about being a god. He was a powerful god, but he failed to protect the most special person in his life. Yric and he didn’t get to spend a lot of time with each other which made his feeling worst. He could feel the pain building in his chest, drilling his new heart. The result of the exchange formed different pain. Saying goody to goodbye to Yric really hurt him badly. It was a fact that he could not forget even to his own death. The two leaders looked down at him. The expressions in their eyes never changed even a bit. But they were full of judgment, searching for all mistakes that he did to add up the sin he had made. After a while, the king shifted his attention to the demon lord.“What i
The deity disappeared in a blink of an eye and appeared in front of him only a few inches away. He quickly blocked the attack with his sword, putting strength in the blade. The powerful punch of the deity touched his sword, creating a sound wave. Their clash turned the entire room into chaos, making the ceiling fall and breaking the walls. He pushed the deity harder, but the deity wouldn’t even budge even a little. He then sent his ice from his sword, starting with the hand to freeze the deity. His enemy was also fast to respond. The deity raised his other free hand, transforming his fingers into a sharp blade. When he realized the deity was about to stab him to the side, he stepped back to dodge.Fortunately, he escaped death as he stood alert. To calm his nerve, he took a deep breath. From that moment on, it would not be easy facing the deity. He had to put everything in one attack to defeat him. If he let the fight longer, he would only get tired. With that thought in mind, he held
Xurden woke up in a searing pain drilling his head. The moment he opened his eyes, he found himself in the very middle of the dome underground. They tied his hands in golden chains attached to two dark pillars, making his wrist numb and burned. His skin had now red wounds. At the brief movement he made, he winced crazily. He couldn’t think of a way to free himself because the chains had drained all of his strength. He moved his head to look around, only to find nothing. He was alone and all he could see were the dark corners of the dome that the light of the torches stuck on the walls couldn’t reach. The runes written on the floor beneath were noticeable as they glowed in red. He understood what was really happening. The demon planned on taking over his body using that ceremony. He turned his head to the right when dark smoke appeared a few inches away from him. In that smoke, Jake came out and walked toward him. Every step the professor took seemed different to his eyes. When he stud
They all got into the car as the traffic got heavier. The loud honking of cars never stopped ringing in his ears. The side mirrors almost rubbed together in that traffic jam. His servants sat down on his left while he remained on the other side. Arasia took the passenger’s seat quietly and Jake concentrated on driving. The silence inside the car didn’t last long. Sebastian couldn’t hold his mouth. His servant turned his attention to him. “Boss, why are you with him?” Sebastian asked. Jake heard clearly who was in front. Xurden observed the questioning look of his servant. “It’s because of her,” he answered. He moved his head a little toward the goddess. W “Are they together?” Sebastian said next. Xurden didn’t expect that Sebastian would say those words. He forgot Sebastian’s mind ran differently. His servant’s imagination could be wild sometimes. The moment that one question entered Arasia’s ear, she turned around with a frown on her face. She stared at Sebastian before she spo
Xurden woke up from his sleep feeling refreshed on the side of the bed. His hand immediately looked for Yric while his eyes were still closed. But he didn’t feel him. He could only grab the empty sheet next to him. When he realized the younger boy wasn't there, he got up in a rush and got off the bed. He moved his eyes around the room, looking for a sign of the younger boy. Unfortunately, there was no sign of Yric, which made him worry. A second later, he closed his eyes, heightening all his senses. But he didn’t sense him even a bit. In the end, he accepted the reality that Yric wasn’t there on the mountain. As he was about to go out of the room, he noticed a note on the small table beside the bed. He picked it up after reading the message that Yric left for him. His forehead furrowed because of what Yric wrote on it. The message made him frustrated. Yric went on with his plan facing Veronica without bringing him along. Now that he was in that situation, alone in the mountain, he wou
THE STORM had stopped on the mountaintops, making everything clear in Yric’s eyes from where he was standing at the mouth of the cave. All he could see was the thick snow that wouldn’t melt all year long. He was wearing thick fur to fight the surrounding cold. He left Xurden asleep inside his old house because he was waiting for his servants to arrive. Just as he was thinking about them, he could see movements below a hundred meters away from him. He saw his three servants climbing up the slope. All of them were wearing dark coats. When Tear waved his hand, he walked out of the cave and slid down toward his servants without using a tool to make his slide smooth. He used his body effectively and arrived in front of the three that stopped climbing.“You better have good news for me,” he told the three as he stood up. He removed the snow which clang on the fur.The three looked at each other before Drop spoke up. “We’re very sorry. Celestro escaped the dungeon,” the demon said and quickl
THEY LAY down on the ground, looking up at the night sky. The stars seemed to fade away from their eyes while the cold of the breezing wind touched their skin. Around them, the silence was deafening. They could hear each other calm breathing. Xurden didn’t know for how long they stayed quiet. They only admired the serene scene above them. Yric broke the silence after a while. “How are the things there?” the young boy asked without turning his head. “It’s the same,” Xurden said to him. “Nothing had changed ever since I left.” He didn’t tell him about acquiring the seat from his older brother. But he felt like Yric sensed it, which was shown in his next words. “Even in your family?” Yric lay down on his side. The younger boy stared at his face. Xurden also did the same, meeting Yric’s questioning eyes. He hesitated for a second, but when he thought there was no point if he would hide it from him, he finally spoke about them. “Why do you ask?” he said to him first. “I just want to k
THEY WENT directly to his older brother’s house, Mikael, after they returned to the floating city. The guards stopped them at the gate. He froze them in thick ice when they tried to rush toward him. They entered the gate with no problem. His two servants carried the man with his hands tied. They had to walk through the wide lawn before reaching the main house. The other guards came out. They ran towards them. With just a flick of his hand, they froze after being covered in thick ice. They reached the main house and no one else stopped them. He kicked the door to open it. He found his older brother having fun with three girls in the bath he had placed near the door. “What are you doing here?” his brother asked him with anger in his voice. Because of his arrival, the three women ran out of the water and entered a room. He pulled the man they were carrying and kicked him to fall into the bath. “What do you think you’re doing?” His older brother stood up in the bath because of his ang
