Mel's POV

Jaxon's expression softens. "Is that what you were really worried about, baby girl?"

I look down in my lap. "I don't know, I'm just trying to figure out why you lied to me," I admit quietly.

"Yeah, that's why I can't stay hard," he mumbles to himself. He turns towards me and grabs my hands in his, gazing into my eyes intensely. "I'm sorry for lying to you."

He seems sincere, like he had no other choice. But why? I'm his Beta, he should be able to tell me anything. "What's going on, Jaxon?"

"Would you believe me if I told you it's necessary that I don't tell you?" He looks torn as he chooses his words carefully. "Do you trust me enough not to pry and wait until it's the right time?"

My mouth opens and closes like a fish out of water, but I can't find any words. Is that why he lost his erection? He actually feels bad about it?

I search his guilt-ridden eyes for answers but find none. Whatever he can't speak of, he has sealed it away and thrown away the key.
